    The Western Painted Turtles are native here in Montana, and I absolutely love watching them bask in one of our local ponds. One of the interesting behaviors that's fun to watch is how they have a tendency to literally stack up on basking spots, sometimes even when there's plenty of room to spread out. I have pictures of these guys piled up in stacks three turtles high! :) They're also surprisingly good at climbing, a local researcher from the University discovered, when testing barriers to keep these little fellas off the highway, that wire fencing was insufficient, as they would just climb straight up and over --- you have to top the barrier with about a foot of aluminum flashing to keep them from getting a foothold to go over the top. I've also observed them climbing up wooden piers to bask on top of them.🐢💚

      Can't ever be released of course. Here in Brooklyn NY
      One came from my downstairs neighbors...kept the poor thing in a filthy tank.
      The female I have came from a family who were in crisis and could not care for her anymore.
      She had at least 4-5 years of unshed scoots...she looks MUCH better now.
      She was always kept in water never allowed to bask and fed only on blueberries.
      She laid 11 eggs as soon as we got her and set up a nesting box.
      I have a few problems with these 2 turtles and need advice.

    This question isn’t about painted turtles but I need help with my box turtle hybrids. At what size to I take them out of water and put them in a regular terrarium? I know humidity is still important but my trio are all fairly close in size , they are in separate tubs but they all are around 3” in carapace length . I breed a few species of snakes and lizards but my box turtles are starting to be my favorite

    • @GardenStateTortoise

      Hi Byron, at 3” you can definitely move them into something else. Like you said, humidity is still important so keep up with that and you should be good to go.

  • @twoturtletom
    @twoturtletom 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Great video Chris and Casey. The midland that you have is really quite different than the painted turtles that live in Ohio, and I wouldn’t be surprised that it either came from the western area of intergrade if it’s a wild animal, or that it is possibly a hybrid. To me, it has more characters of a western painted turtle, including that longer, more pointy head and nose. Also, the plastron marking is more ornate than any Midland I’ve seen here in Ohio, which have a solid dark blotch. If captive bred, I wouldn’t be surprised if it had mixed parentage, because to me, if I found this in the wild in Ohio, I would put an ID on it as the progeny of an escaped western that interbred with our local midlands. In general, our animals in Ohio have much more affinity with the eastern painted than the western painted. Also, our midlands do not have the faint “map turtle markings” - I’ve never seen that in a wild Midland here in Ohio. And as you pointed out, this animal seems to be an intergrade. True midlands, at least in Ohio, are much more similar to Easterns.

    • @GardenStateTortoise
      @GardenStateTortoise  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Tom,
      Thanks for watching. As with most subspecific animals, they will sway toward one or the other depending on their range. This is a captive bred turtle, not as properly grown as I’d like to see, it should be more oval, overall, but it is from Indiana midlands. Hailing from the western portion of the midland’s range, they will lean more to the western whereas those from where you are and elsewhere in the eastern sector of their range, will follow a more C. picta picta standard. I’ve been fortunate enough to see true midlands, westerns and of course plenty of easterns and this animal would be classified as a midland. I agree that it certainly has western influence a bit morphologically speaking but I also believe the animal would look considerably different if it were wild caught and raised naturally. Now, of course, if we were able to do genetic work we could learn more. I’ve seen many midlands like this one as far as color and markings go and I’ve also seen many like what you are describing. I’ve also seen (in nature) bright green pure easterns with pointed snouts up in Pennsylvania, far away from the western range. These also occur down in North Carolina. So, as always, there’s variation which is paramount to keep us on our toes at all times.

    Painted turtles, in my opinion, are the most beautifully colored turtles (morphs excluded). I absolutely love them. I kept and bred them for many years, but was constantly frustrated with their aggressive behavior. No matter how large the enclosure and no matter how many turtles I kept together, the painted turtles were constantly nipping at each others tails and feet resulting in missing toes and stubbed tails. The males would even kill each other if I kept them together. Due to my frustration with this, I eventually sold them all. Has anyone else experienced this with painted turtles? Does anyone have any solid advice as to how to avoid this problem?

    • @GardenStateTortoise
      @GardenStateTortoise  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks Blaine and I agree on excluding the morphs. They’re incredible the way they are. While we’ve experienced nipping with a variety species, especially when they’re hatchlings, I can’t say I’ve ever had this happen with any of the painted turtles, indoors or out. They’ve always been more on the peaceful side for us, no matter the type. Yes, we’ve seen some male to male aggression but it’s always seemed to work out. We have them out in various large ponds and have a few select ones on exhibit in our nature center. The only thing somewhat similar to what you’re reporting that we’ve seen is our southern painted turtle youngsters have effectively nipped each other’s tails. Then it stopped. Maybe someone else can chime in if they’ve got any advice.

    • @BlaineHeggie
      @BlaineHeggie 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@GardenStateTortoise I live in Taiwan; and being that we don't get many turtles imported from the States (most imported turtles here come from China) all I can figure is that it's possible that the painteds I got were inbred. Perhaps that caused the aggressive behavior...maybe...

      @jennfursketeer2323 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I had to separate my two because of aggression, but in retrospect they’re tank was way too small for two adolescent males. So what kind of turtle is a Red Eared Slider? In my local park during summer months I have noticed quite the growing population. I think people who don't want them anymore just leave them in the pond. They seem to be thriving though. Some are getting rather large.

    • @GardenStateTortoise

      Red eared sliders are similar but belong to a different genus. They also grow much, much larger than painted turtles. Unfortunately, like you just wrote, they are being released in areas like yours. They then settle in and start to take over. We’ve done a few videos about them as well on this channel.

      Well, it depends on the country you’re from to an extent. In the USA, terrapins are strictly brackish water Diamondbacks, anything else (aside from tortoises) is a sea turtle and this includes box turtles which many people mistakenly label as tortoises.

    Revelation 9
    New International Version
    9 The fifth angel sounded his trumpet, and I saw a star that had fallen from the sky to the earth. The star was given the key to the shaft of the Abyss. 2 When he opened the Abyss, smoke rose from it like the smoke from a gigantic furnace. The sun and sky were darkened by the smoke from the Abyss. 3 And out of the smoke locusts came down on the earth and were given power like that of scorpions of the earth. It's a movie 🍿🎥 coming from ArchAngel Michael

    Very good video! Not that I will ever need to distinguish between them, but I still find their differences remarkable. Thank you!

    One of our favorite turtle species! We currently have 1.3 Midland Painted Turtles that were surrendered this past year. Beautiful creatures for sure. Also, I didn't realize that the Southerns moved to their own species. Great video as always!
