Yes, he is doing that well except he forgot to lift the seat when he washed it. I used to have this same brand ATV and removing the seat was a must to clean it. On the 2004 600 sportsman I had I’d even pull the side panels on the motor. They weren’t screwed in.

Just wait for it to dry, take it outside and spray it down with an air gun. It’s like magic just like their oil lubricant.

I give you A lot of Credit Joe. There are many people who flip Quads that would have just retorqued the head bolts and put stop leak into the radiator and sell it. You on the Other hand do the right thing and diagnose to the root and repair it..
That's wut your supposed to do not just put a bandaid on it just to make a dollar, I run a repair business and when you bring me something to fix it goes out the door in better shape than it came in .
Great job. When the coolant gets in the cylinder, sometimes you'll get a "cylinder wash" type of effect, where it washes the oil off the piston, and the compression will go down.... You add some oil, re-run your compression check, compression is back up where it belongs..... I think that's what you are seeing there, you're getting cylinder wash.... Also, you run it successfully at your land.... Drive it back home... Sitting on the trailer for 15-20 minutes, it has a hot radiator that is under some pressure, so the coolant will seep into the cylinder while the ATV is on the trailer going home.... That first start up in your driveway, huge blast of white smoke, because coolant had time to accumulate in that cylinder..... Feels like a classic head gasket to me....
The second I saw that coolant spraying up while you were doing throttle checks, and saw that white smoke, I was yelling HEADGASKET! at the screen lol. I've had the white smoke monster claim a few race engines in my vehicles over the years. I feel for ya. Never fun.
my ex wife bought one of these brand new back in 2002.. Surprisingly really quick back in the day. I'll bet the head just needs to be resurfaced when you rip apart. Either way still worth the tear down.. Super fun quad to rip in the snow with the push button 4wd

With that being a two stroke, you can put a pipe on it and really wake it up. I had one of those that I bought brand new back in 98 or 99. I bought an FMF pipe and silencer for it and an HPD clutch kit. Those two items totally transformed the quad. It ripped! I was drag racing and beating pretty much any sport quad of the day.

My buddy bought one of these brand new and I had a mint 97 banshee. Lots of crazy fun times we had on them. That 400 scrambler actually ripped and would give the banshee a good fight lol

Joe, you should invest in a harbor freight lift table. I have one and the table top is 1 and a half feet across and 2 and a half feet long. You can lift bikes and quads with it.
These scramblers are a nightmare for the rear brake. It’s most likely not the master cylinder. These bikes are tricky as the front brake lever and back brake are all tied together you have to bleed them in a sequence. It’s a pain in the ass.. maybe mine was different but I tried new master cylinder and new brake lines before I figured out the sequence bleed ! Best of luck on this one.
2 things you could try 1 is lower gearing and carb work . Headgasket leak makes lean bog cackle at bottom of power curve on poo strokes and fall flat before pwrband curve .i recommend belray twostroke oil . Your vids remind me of my journey but 25years earlier , more building gokarts n steampunk chopper , over powered mini quad was 50cc im thinkin 125 2t
I tried that cleaner in my ultrasonic cleaner and it discolored the aluminum pretty bad, I believe it's caustic and damages the aluminum. The last carbs I did I used Berryman's carb dip, it worked perfect. You can get it at most auto parts stores around here.
Please help me with my arctic cat 300 I have the same exact one as your old video from 2 years ago 1998 Arctic cat 300 2x4 my dash lights don’t turn on or starter won’t work it it only runs by pool and that hurts after a while. It’s hard to get started. and hard to get in neutral now can’t see the lights on the dash to do anything. I don’t know what’s wrong with it. Just wish I can ride. Would have been interesting to test the compression after you got it running good ! A bore scope works great for looking in cylinders to see what’s going on !
Anything out of a barn likely has corn and dog food in the exhaust. I would check that after the air box and before checking for spark. Of course I started doing this in 72. And I learned a lot of things the hard way. Like your channel though I chuckle sometimes.

I have the Polaris 400 2 stroke and had the same problem with the rear brakes. I had to pull a vacuum from the rear bleeder to get the brakes to work even after installing a new rear master cylinder. You can also unbolt the master cylinder and raise it higher to get all the air out by gravity bleeding it.
I really enjoy watching your videos! They make me want to go out and buy a dirt bike or quad that is not running. LOL. The only thing I wish is that you would explain further the reasons why you do certain things. For instance why do you hold the throttle open while you are doing a compression test?

The trailboss we have has front brake on left side, nothing on throttle side. Rear brake is foot brake. FYI, I ve replaced tons of those rear master cylinders they're usually bad, leaving the dealers . My sportsman has been through 4 of them since it was bought in 08.
Those are actually really fun machines, there’s room to mod them also easily if you’re a 2 stroke guy.. it’s a shame the front ends are so ugly. It’s almost like Polaris told someone “ you have an hour to figure out how to make this sport quad 4 wheel drive “
Was very pleased at the seemingly good fix especially after so much blue smoke was coming out. That $900 might get equalised if the cylinder is cracked. Looking forward to the leak down test, where you should be able to make an accurate decision. Good luck :)
Personally if the rings are stuck, in the past I’ve had great success at heating the plug up very hot & putting it back & trying to start it really fast!!! I also think your top end needs rings & blown head gasket!
The very first shot of the plug told you that it had water ingress. You don't stand a chance of bleeding a brake like you are trying, you either need two people, one to pump and one to bleed or get a pump bleeder that fits on the cap of the reservoir and the pipe fits onto a wheel valve and forces the fluid through.

I have my brothers in garage now that sat for long period and did the exact same thing! and In my case it is the crank, water pump and counter balancer seals. it smoked oil until the counter balancer was empty of oil, and it started ingesting antifreeze through the water pump seals and smoking just like yours, give that a look before pulling the head. Hello, i watch all your videos and got exited when i saw this one.. i just revently aquired a 97 scrampbler . it was smoking bad, took it in and deleted the oil.injection pump, ita got a small oil leak not sure where its coming from i dont want to ran it dry, can you post a short video of how and where to add engine oil.. it will be greatly appreiated, thanks
Head gasket or exhaust manifold looked like it was leaking…..unless it was just oil or something. If head gasket it would be a reason for low compression and difficult starting. I’d also do a full oil change before revving the heck out of it! Just my observations. 👍🏻🇦🇺
They make a simple inexpensive test kit available at pretty much any automotive parts store to check for combustion gases in the coolant. That will definitively tell you if you have a bad head gasket, cracked block, or cracked head.
i love scramblers 400 500 250 i know the 250 is a trailblazer but same frame but i love those scramblers it was the first 4x4 quad ive riden and i loved it my dad bought it for me and i just had so much fun and it was so reliable i miss that
Joe, that appeared to me to be a lot of air bubbles in the rad, if that was a car I would check for a head gasket issue, I retired after 40 years turning wrenches on cars to trucks to dozers
You need to invest in a fiber optic scope. Even one you can attach to your phone. They are fairly inexpensive anymore and this way you'll be able to look down into the cylinder through the spark plug hole or any area you want to look at really that you have little access to.
I had a feeling there was a coolant leak from the first time you showed the wet spark plug. Hopefully it’s not a cracked cylinder cause those aren’t cheap. (New ones anyways) I replaced one back in the mid 90’s and it cost me $500 and some change for just the cylinder. I’m sure they are considerably more now.

Like I said I'd take the top end off and fix it the correct way, new rings , hone the cylinder and new gaskets
Most time on these bikes its the crank seal that gets blown in by the waterpump pressure crappy design

Pumping the throttle does nothing Joe. No accelerator pumps on these bikes. Awesome video none the less, keep saving these old bikes and quads

The water pump is on the crank shaft in the cases watch out the rad pressure pushes the crank seals in. Smart design on polaris part lool

Gotta check out the oil injection on those. Theres also a 1/2 quart of 10w30 oil for the couterballance, the dipstick is under the carb

I find the low compression ones will start with a little starting fluid, and once they have some heat they will run.

Water pump seals were bad on my 400. It was doing the same thing. But since you're compression is low you could start with the topend rebuild.

Sounds good Joe , me I'd find out how to adjust the oil injection and lean it out a tic .but sounds great.

Hot staple that cage, it works good, also JB plastic weld works good to. Staples are stronger, then add epoxy to that.

be sure to pay attention to the front hub oil, if they go dry it takes no time to fail and parts arent exactly easy to find for em anymore

That’s awesome, quick question! If I change the exhaust on raptor 350, do I have to mess with the carb? Or can I leave it stock? Or how many turns should I give the screw? Any pilot changes? And if I did need to change the pilot or anything like that, how do I guess the size?

why didnt you use a scope to see inside the cylinder , coulda been some mouse duff from inside the exhust . how would the h2o get up into the combustion chamber from the crank ??? Thanks !!! Another Great Video !!!
Hello, i watch all your videos and got exited when i saw this one.. i just revently aquired a 97 scrampbler . it was smoking bad, took it in and deleted the oil.injection pump, ita got a small oil leak not sure where its coming from i dont want to ran it dry, can you post a short video of how and where to add engine oil.. it will be greatly appreiated, thanks
Dont forget to check the counter shaft oil. Has a dip stick under the carb area if i remember.
check the gas in the tank make sure it is just gas maybe before you take it apart.
Head gasket or exhaust manifold looked like it was leaking…..unless it was just oil or something. If head gasket it would be a reason for low compression and difficult starting. I’d also do a full oil change before revving the heck out of it! Just my observations. 👍🏻🇦🇺
They make a simple inexpensive test kit available at pretty much any automotive parts store to check for combustion gases in the coolant. That will definitively tell you if you have a bad head gasket, cracked block, or cracked head.

i love scramblers 400 500 250 i know the 250 is a trailblazer but same frame but i love those scramblers it was the first 4x4 quad ive riden and i loved it my dad bought it for me and i just had so much fun and it was so reliable i miss that

check the impeller seal the mechanical water pumps have issues on most polaris engines
lotta guys will get prius pumps to bypass the mechanical water pump works great from what i hear
Joe, that appeared to me to be a lot of air bubbles in the rad, if that was a car I would check for a head gasket issue, I retired after 40 years turning wrenches on cars to trucks to dozers

I think that two stroke engine has a wet sump for the balancer. You may want to check the oil level of the balance shaft sump.
You need to invest in a fiber optic scope. Even one you can attach to your phone. They are fairly inexpensive anymore and this way you'll be able to look down into the cylinder through the spark plug hole or any area you want to look at really that you have little access to.
I had a feeling there was a coolant leak from the first time you showed the wet spark plug. Hopefully it’s not a cracked cylinder cause those aren’t cheap. (New ones anyways) I replaced one back in the mid 90’s and it cost me $500 and some change for just the cylinder. I’m sure they are considerably more now.
