It's because Mustie doesn't do any sponsors or advertising. Never once have I heard him say LIKE and SUBSCRIBE. That is a HUGE reason I started watching him, I mean besides how great his videos are. I can't even imagine how many sponsor emails the guy gets a week and just DENIES that money! Talk about having morals! Wish he would rub off on some of these other TH-camrs!
this has the same engine as my rzr 800s had and if you plan to keep it you should definitely do the high pressure relief valve fix . On the ranger there’s a bolt just above the oil filter to the left i believe. Once you remove the bolt there’s a small spring and a dowel pin in the hole . The problem is the dowel pin can get stuck in the bottom of the hole . causing either no oil pressure or high pressure that blows the seal on the oil filter which if not noticed will destroy the engine. what most people do is remove the dowel pin with one of those extendable magnet pen things and put in place 2 5/16 ball bearings as the 2 bearings are the same length as the dowel pin . Then put the spring back in and then the bolt .
Yep.. have an 800 with 2 complete engine rebuilds. Found out about the 2 5/16 roller balls too late. Did it after the second rebuild and haven’t had a problem since. Good advice
NICE!!! Pulled a Mustie earlier today - mower on the side of the road with sign: "FREE - BAD CARB." The son and I grabbed it, put it in the truck, cleaned the carb (gel from ethanol fuel in it) and it runs. Doesn't run great, needs a new air filter (on order), and maybe the main jet opened up a little, but doesn't knock, doesn't smoke, seems to have good power... YAY!!!
Remember you have to sell or use it now. Too many people are just junk collectors and hoarders these days, be mindful. When people hoard junk it keeps it from use by mustie1 type folks. I fear this is the hoarder's motive.
I’ve been buying Polaris since 2004. The manufacturer recommends anything under 20 MPH (roughly) use should use low gear for belt saving purposes. I’ve always done this and had really good luck with belt life. My 2007 Sportsman 800 X2, I got 16 years out of the original belt. That includes plowing yearly and pulling logs out of my woods. Glad you got the ole Ranger back alive!
Here's a fuse testing tip: use a 5 amp test light (rig up your own with headlight bulbs). Connect them across the fuse holder blades. If the light comes on super bright, you have a dead short, AND you didn't need to blow a fuse to find out. Plus, you can keep the test light on without damaging anything while you search for the short. When the light goes out or gets dim, you found the issue. Learned this from Pine Hollow Auto Diagnostics.
Yup, that is also a nice simple way to debug an AC short problem. plus a 100 watt or more bulb (not those leds things) and power up the circuit. If the light is full bright, you still have a short. It was very helpful to know this when we had screwed fuse box. It was easy to screw a light bulb in the place of the fuse.
Good morning from Plattsburgh, NY. I remember building those 800 XP engines on the Polaris engine line in 2008. Very different from what Polaris had built previously.😊
Yelp they vibrate the front and rear bumpers right off when idling. Thats the only complaint I have with the 800 engines. Oh ,one of the 800s vibrated the injectors right out of the engine. Blue lock tight fixed that. I can’t get my brain around paying the asking price for one of those new ones, wow.
I had one of these a few years ago. I bought it used and it looked like new. The ride and handling were great and it was comfortable to ride in. It ran great until it didn't. After chasing electrical gremlins for a few months and a new wiring harness and a couple of sensors it ran great again. At that point I traded for a Honda and have never looked back. Good video.
You had me in the first half, but after all your tinkering and troubleshooting, no I don’t think it’s a lemon, maybe just a tangerine that’s seen some stuff! Well done Brother!😊
Nice job, great video! If I were making a video on it, somebody would've come running up waving a title wanting to get it. You certainly earn useful equipment with your mechanical skills. Thanks for taking us along!
Darren, I have a Polaris 500 sportsman 4 wheeler. I had oil in the air filter housing and it turned out that I was taking short jaunts and shutting it off ( between house and wood pile). Dealer told me to leave it running until it warms up. I haven’t had any trouble now since doing that. Love your videos!!
Awesome to have a Mustie1 episode in my feed to help get over my 70th birthday party hangover from last night. Watching Darren find and fix the various issues he found was extremely entertaining as always. He's definitely a mechanical genius.
So glad for you that it proved to be a very worthwhile project and that it didn't require an engine build. Thanks for another great Sunday coffee experience !
We had an old Ranger 500 4x4 on a long-term jobsite years ago…think it was a 2007 model. We used the hell out of it for about 14 years. It was a beast. About the only things we had to replace were the belt drive pulleys after 10 years, or so. At one point near the end of its life, the connection between the air box and the intake came undone (or ripped)…sucked in so much dust and crud that it wrecked the engine. It eventually got a rebuilt powerplant and went back to work! Edit: And yeah…we had people drive around all day with the parking brake on a time or two, lol.
Hi D. Man that is a cool machine!! Perfect for the lake house. Great repair! I would love to see you get into the heater fan. I know you could get it working!! Another great video!! Thanks again for bringing us along!! Can’t wait to see the other machine!! 😊😊😊Darren
I have 3 different Toyotas with hard to read dipsticks, especially with fresh oil. I used 400 grit sandpaper across the dipsticks and now they are easy to read with no oil creep up the sticks. Give it a shot on the Polaris. 👍
Hey Mustie I worked for Honda building odyssey and Ridgeline for 16 years and we called those plastic clips( stays) and we used grommet pullers to remove them. And you are a 100 percent correct, they are cheaper and easier, faster to install . I know this information is practically useless so don't hate . Great going on the polaris 😂
love your videos. This one is no exception AND you power washed it before you started working on it! I LOVE power washing and it's much better to watch after you clean it. All that mud and crud makes me cringe! LOL. Thanks
Great score Mustie.... the main thing not to do is run in high going slow. You will burn the CVT belt out. Low is best unless on a road or decent track. 😊
I worked at a powersports that sold Honda and Polaris products before retiring. If it wasn't for being a Polaris dealer there wouldn't have been anything for me to do. We sold Hondas and once delivered we never saw them again but the Polaris' had me swamped with work.
That dipstick gave me headaches! I think the level is shown by oil in the holes at the tip. Oil on the sides could be from the tube the dipstick sticks inside. (My guess) None the less it's a damn cool vehicle, that instantly want me to drive one too!😅 Greetings, Carsten.
Raced and was sponsored by Polaris for some years back in the late 2000's. Those 800's batch fire spark and fuel, both pistons travel together and one fires exhaust stroke and one fires compression stroke. If the sensors are working correctly you should be able to crank it with your foot on the brake or the hand brake pulled while in gear. I'd bet dollars to pesos the noise you're hearing are heat shields rattling. Those machines were notorious for rattling exhaust shields and the springs that hold the head pipe on the exhaust manifold breaking. Not 100% sure on that model but you should have a "turf mode" switch that locks and unlocks the rear diff independently of the 4x4 switch.
I work a security gig across the street from a car lot and I kept seeing a doo doo brown FJ. I kept remembering your old video and got curious. Other than the outrageous price they wanted, with as many miles it had, it was only 2 wheel drive. Still an interesting little vehicle.
5W50 is a common weight for Harley Davidson. But don't buy the oil for motorcycles, buy SD grade for diesel motors, works just fine and far less pricey. I used to buy mine at Advance Auto parts under the store brand. Very economical. I was told that Advance store brand oil is actually relabled Havoline. I believe it. Bottle design is exactly the same
Tip, if the dipstick is hard to read, sandblast it and clean it properly. The matte surface of the metal makes it easier to see where the oil sits at. It also kinda sticks to the surface so the actual fill line stays.
I was actually thinking about this on something that I was checking oil on. Didn't understand why they would leave it as such a smooth surface. I thought about just scuffing it up with a file.
@@jimalcott760 I can't remember, but I think it's our Honda generator that's like that. But you don't really need to read it on that one. If it's got oil on the dipstick, it's not too low, and if the oil isn't running out the hole when it's on a level surface, it's not overfilled.
I have found that dry and clean it with brake clean, dry it, then rub a small piece of sheetrock on the stick. Blow it off and take your reading. No ghost marks and a very obvious correct level. No doubts after you use this technique. Used sounding tanks in large ships.
My grandmas had this happen. Messed with it for about an hour trying to figure it out. Was running great just wouldn’t go. Did some research. Turns out the machine spent its life with the buckle buckled and nobody used it. One of the kids got on and unbuckled it. Wouldn’t go faster than 20 mph.

Once again, a good Sunday morning! Thanks man. Now I can go outside and work on my projects. I've given up on pro football so my Sunday's are my own - again! Hope to see the diesel video(s) in the future!
Awesome!! I have project of my own that is very different from the Polaris Ranger 800XP. I have 1965 Datsun SPL310 to get running. Otherwise known as the Fairlady Roadster.
New toy! Imagine the look on the seller when they see this.🤣 Just a freakin SPARK PLUG? Good deal, pretty easy fix. Heater fan motor and you are all set. SCORE! Well done Darren, well done.😁
This first thing I did when I got my Ranger was remove those mesh doors and threw them up on a shelf. 11 years later they are still up there good as new.
My 2018 sportsman 850 started to run crappy after I did a slow speed tip over and progressively got worse. I thought it was a plugged injector. I gave up and dropped it off at my local dealer and all they did was replace one of the plugs. In the tip over the crankcase breather passed oil into the air cleaner and it fouled out one of the plugs. $80 total for diagnostic and a new plug!!!

@@Kevin75668 that was my biggest issue with mine. I don’t know what happened before my time in owning it. I was pulling bushes in the front yard and the thing would just slip away. Got 2 bushes out and decided to give up and tear up the yard with my pickup. Took it in said there’s nothing wrong with it. Made the poor decision to buy the Polaris second hand and who knows what the previous guy did. But I also love my arctic cat very good rig and I was happy to know I can rely on this one since I use it eberuday
It’s crazy people can cheap out and neglect their machines so horribly… i just cant leave the things I own in shambles or throw miss match plugs and random junk on em. I gotta keep em good, but that was how I was raised out in the country. The humming is the fuel pump priming and the clicking is the idle air valve solenoid resetting. Ive owned Polaris machines for years and done everything you can imagine on them. They have their common issues, but honestly they last forever if you maintain them. Im only a short way into this but it sounds like a rebuild is needed… it is common to overfill the oil on these machines cuz the recommended amount doesn’t quite reach the dip stick line. Also that oil in the intake has probably ruined the map sensor. i gotta just shuddup n watch or ill keep commenting along the way lol
I have a similar machine, good utility fun on the trails, mine also has power steering. Change out the trans fluid and front diff fluid. Also these machines are known for a weak charging system. They barely generate enough pixies to run the stock machine. The cooling fan and lights pull a lot of juice. If you start adding accessories like a winch, light bar, sound system, heater fan etc there is a deficit. I put two batteries in parallel in the hood, some guys install an automotive battery in the storage compartment under the drivers seat. Just leave it on a smart battery maintainer when not in use. I have seen some well crafted plywood doors made for these. Have fun with it.
That thing is a HOOT! It's had a hard life already so you cant really hurt it. I'm loving this new content. Great diagnostics coverage and the ride through the woods was awesome. This and the MG TD project are really impressive compelling video. Free pile snow blowers not so much.😉
I have the that same die hard battery charger that Mustie was using. My dad bought it many years ago and it still works great ! Nice job as always Mustie !
Good morning and happy Sunday from the US double dose of mutsie1 this week glad to know that he's feeling a little bit better very good video this morning🎉
Hey mustie I drove one of those for 15 years as a park ranger there s a plug under your butt where you sit a govenor unplug it that thing will do 55 mph lol good luck
Thanks Darren, great video. I’d like one of these type of machines…not sure I want this model based on some of the forum comments but I’ll keep looking.
Two batteries is just an option, you can add a battery if you want, people often equip lighbars, sprayers, winches etc. and the extra battery is nice to have.
Great video as usual. Glad to see it was just due to being laid on its side, old gas and a bad spark plug,.. a relatively easy fix for Mustie on something he paid a "decent" price for.
I did some Googlin' and came up with a You Tube video: " Polaris 800 Stuck Oil Pressure Relief Valve Repair At D-Ray's Shop " They replace the relief valve piston with two 5/16" ball bearings. This bypasses the original piston's tendency to get stuck in the bore which either over pressurizes the system, or leaves you with low pressure (depending on which position the piston gets stuck). It is a bit involved getting the old piston out, requiring disassembly of the one side of the engine.
in the 1970s, my dad bought a used 67 beetle. The top speed was 55 MPH. Pulling two of the spark plug wires made no difference in how it idled. Found pieces of broken piston rings in the oil strainer.
Mustie, When you said 'lets pull up on the rear end of the bed end to straighten it". I could have sworn you would walk out of camera then come back over to the back of the deck and say “you didn’t think I was gonna pick up on it with my back problems did ya, when I have a perfect;y good fork lift right here” haha
Hey really like you channel , i have noticed on some carts where they have like a split or two stage air filter- 3/4 of the filter being like a normal air media and the other 1/4 being more like a screen again really like your channel and good luck with all your future rebuilds
So musty all in all, evidently you got a good deal. I don't know what you paid for the unit, but It turns out it just has a bad spark plug. and possibility of the oil pressure sending unit being bad You got a good deal if the owner had no known these issues he probably wouldn't have sold it. Good score for you. Love your videos on Coming. I've been a little late. I'm watching them all, but I'm catching up.
Hi Mustie! Looking forward to seeing you work through this Polaris! They have really good engines, but like anything, they can fail if neglected or abused. IF you find you need an engine, I would recommend you check Copart for a totalled rollover or badly bent frame from a crash. The insurance companies total many due to the cost of the plastics or replacing the frame. Many are near new when crashed. Anything with an 800cc would be identical. Your drive belt and clutches looked good to me. When the clutch or belt fail, you still rev but not move properly. You have a different problem with the 12 mph driving speed. The motor sounds like it has a valve or lifter problem to me. The oil in the air box could easily be from the machine being on it's side for even a short time. Best of luck and am looking forward to your solution. And yes, it will do 50+ mph when running properly! Lots of fun to be had, for sure!

Nothing like buying new toy cheap and having fun learn how it works and repair ❤classic new videos for you are like yt gold 🎉🎉🎉
Mustie1 we need an exhaust camera to see the eviction of tenants!! Thanks for sharing
Nothing like a Sunday morning coffee in the Mustie1 company 😊👌
Yes. Part of my Sunday routine!
Best shop coffee brand?
Thanks for another good one, (Queensland Australia)
Hey D. It's split, and basically a coin flip this year. Whatever happens, happens. No BS this time. Have a good day.
Always relaxing on a Sunday morning with a good cup of coffee! Watch and learn!!
Good sunday morning for the second video of the week…. Thanks!
This is going to be a good one. I much prefer when you are working on useful items rather than toys. Excellent project.
Still a toy you can also do work in
This isn’t really useful. What will you do with this thing anyways? Go ride trails?
@@EZ4U2Say11 can’t tow anything with it. Cvt trans would be on fire. The bed is smaller than a twin child’s bed. Payload is 500 pounds can’t move anything with it. The side by side movement is so stupid.
@@danokerr9929 Used to have a 450cc version. Hauled tons of fill with it, trailers loaded with chairs and tables for outdoor events, even skidded 12ft.+ logs. Never had a problem with the transmission.
You’re having way too much much fun. Every guy needs one of those❤
Hello all from Romsey in Hampshire uk great video Mustie great little truck 👍
This satisfied my curiosity about Polaris 4x4s Thanks!
I would love to watch a video of you fabricating some doors for this.
Good morning and happy Sunday from the US double dose of mutsie1 this week glad to know that he's feeling a little bit better very good video this morning🎉
love the drive by and the mudhole shot-
What a fun video!!
So happy nothing major wrong with the engine!!
That’s a good buy, for trailing round the bush . Cheers Mustie
Mustie i hope you keep the side by side and enjoy it have fun.🤭
Greetings from over the pond Lincolnshire nice job on sorting it look forward to further up dates 👍😂
Good to see doing better, Mustie.
Hey mustie I drove one of those for 15 years as a park ranger there s a plug under your butt where you sit a govenor unplug it that thing will do 55 mph lol good luck
Thanks for the how-to on the battery you fill and charge. 37:19
We had one since 2017 held up good .
No issues on construction sites and mountain area.
Fuel pump in tank changed .
Haven’t watched in a while that’s a sweet new truck

Good morning from sunny Florida 🌴
Hey Mustie1. Very awesome find. That flashing light on the roof might not last long on those trails. Great video thanks for always sharing.
Huge improvement over all your mini bikes to run around and play.
Thanks Darren, great video. I’d like one of these type of machines…not sure I want this model based on some of the forum comments but I’ll keep looking.
Two batteries is just an option, you can add a battery if you want, people often equip lighbars, sprayers, winches etc. and the extra battery is nice to have.
gmornin Mustie fans from south florida!!!
Great video as usual.
Glad to see it was just due to being laid on its side, old gas and a bad spark plug,.. a relatively easy fix for Mustie on something he paid a "decent" price for.
Had the pleasure of touring the factory in Northern Minnesota this summer. Just two hours south of Winnipeg. Nice
i have road bikes in the woods. watching you makes my knuckles hurt.
My mates dad owns a farm, he acquired one of these, we spent a couple of hours off roading round the fields in it😅awesome wee machines
I did some Googlin' and came up with a You Tube video:
" Polaris 800 Stuck Oil Pressure Relief Valve Repair At D-Ray's Shop "
They replace the relief valve piston with two 5/16" ball bearings.
Hey really like you channel , i have noticed on some carts where they have like a split or two stage air filter- 3/4 of the filter being like a normal air media and the other 1/4 being more like a screen
again really like your channel and good luck with all your future rebuilds
Good morning to all from MI

Good morning from W Michigan

Favorite all around mechanic dude on TH-cam
Yet another awesome video! Thank you for sharing your adventures with wrenches and your knowledge again!
By the way, did I miss something that looks like a new trailer? I always liked your drop deck one. An elegant solution to the problem of loading.
I'm betting her has several and he used the light duty for this one.
Probably has half a dozen trailers but yes this one looks brand new
You got that one going compared to some of your other projects ! It's about time you got a brake !
Thanks Mustie great little machine. Agree with you it was running on one cylinder due to some kind of incident and got parked due to lack of power.
Nice little 4x4. Always love to watch your videos!
Sunday morning...coffee...Mr. Mustie working on more junk...good times!
Nice! These are cool machines! Looks like you got a pretty good one!
Great video, cool machine, I like your side by side theory, love your work!
A friend of my family worked at the Ranger Polaris production line. He gave me a real nice tour of the plant at Roseau, MN
Great to see a Mustie vid without a carb cleaning session!
I like how it is never about getting the item 'to the office' in your videos, Mustie1
