I have never seen anyone question his abilities as a mechanic. The only beef people have with him is leaving everything filthy instead of just cleaning it off first before he tears things down.
My only problem with him is the misleading video titles. How the hell can he claim he was "ripped off" in any way when he will make thousands of dollars profit from whatever he's working on? He could buy a quad that hasn't ran for 10 years, rusted, engine completely blown and transmission totally shot and he would still end up making a profit without even selling the fixed machine. The ripping off part comes when he makes an offer. Compared to the $ he makes he's giving pennies on the dollar. It's not like he's just an average person buying a quad for his kid or himself or even to flip, it's all content.

I pulled a non running Polaris Exployer 400 out of a barn. Found the driver side water pump seal went bad, leaking past the crank seal. Their fix was to not fill the radiator with fluid and to run the fan at all times, pretending it was now an air cooled engine. The parts list consisted of new crank seals / bearings, water pump seal, counter balance bearings and seal, top end kit and required gaskets. The coolant in the radiator was so old that turned to sludge... that was a fun surprise. Many, many coolant flushing later along with a complete rebuild, the quad is back to life and is a now good running machine. Looks like you're going to need a large container with some diesel to clean the multitude of engine parts
The dude can afford a 20 gallon parts-washer, but he thinks it's a waste of money and rather slaps 2 dirty crank-cases together. I would never buy something from him that's for sure.
That thing was either flooded out by a natural disaster or someone submarined it while they were riding it and just put it away full of water. It will likely clean up fine from the looks of it, nice work, love the videos.
That's what my 700 Raptor looked like after, stupidly, letting a friend borrow it for the weekend!! He sunk it up to the seat & didn't tell me, so yeah, it was sunk
@@dsharpe1 No, that quad was def under water. You can see sediment in every crook and cranny. No way that crank bearing will survive, and the transmission and every bearing in the driveline will be junk. A 22 year old Scrambler is barely worth $900 in running condition. I feel bad for whoever ends up with this "Totally Rebuilt" quad in the future.
It's hard to believe that the engine ran and wasn't incredibly noisy and low on power. Good luck with the rebuild. Looking forward to seeing it come together.

Polaris stuff as you call it, lasts forever if you maintain them correctly! I had many Polaris's over the years, they are well built and durable. Joe thinks they are to hard work on, but they are not. They are built that way to last. I have a Polaris magnum that's 24 yrs old and never repair it, except reg. maintenance.

I started watching your videos for the last 2 months. Love them.. A quick hack for you. If you drop a 5mm neodymium magnet down into the middle finger in the glove, when the screws/bolts come loose, touch it with that finger, and the bolts come out without dropping them! Hope this helps!
Love the content. I was a boat mechanic for a while, and enjoy building and fixing stuff. Haven’t had much experience with quads besides riding them, but it is cool to see how they are put together and your troubleshooting.
Don't know if you're being serious or not but Polaris is garbage for reliability and build quality. There's a reason they're always selling used ones for less money than Japanese quads that are 10 years older...

I had a Polaris 400 L two-stroke with the same engine and the same problem and I know the pain it is horrible. Only mine was far more rusty cause instead of milky oil. It had water in it, and it was a complete nightmare, and it brings back terrible memories watching this😂
Love this video. You take your time and diagnose everything. This I think is by far one of the worst motor I have seen you do. Please keep up the great videos. I have a 500 scrambler and it’s 17 years old. It’s been a great machine. If the maintenance is kept up it makes the machine last. Your videos have inspired me to keep up the maintenance on all my engine’s. I have learned to turn the fuel off and let the engine die when I am done so fuel is not in the carb. Love your videos. Keep up the good work and all the effort you put into editing. Awesome job. Love the way you explain everything.

You might be tired of hearing this, but you are so smart and knowledgeable, since I've been watching your videos I have started to put my fears aside about working on my motorcycles, and always try to think outside the boxes when it comes to problem solving. I have always said if something is broke and I try to fix it and fix it then well and good. Once again thank you for sharing your experience and your knowledge.
Those scrambler are insanely resilient. My brother had one that you could rock the piston back and forth a ton at the top of the cylinder but not the bottom, and still ran like a top and had just as much power as a freshly rebuilt one (we raced them).
It difinently looks like it set for 5 years full of water. Nice thing about the videos is if you get stumped going back together you can always check your video. Great backup. Really enjoy your videos. 😊😊😊😊

You know that crank bearing is going to fail in the future ...it may be time to get some V-blocks an an measuring calipers an start rebuilding your own cranks
You were very lucky Joe. That test ride could well have been fatal to that engine. A testament to Japanese engines as apparently they will still run without bearings and seals. Lets just hope that all of those mating surfaces clean up well enough not to cause problems despite new seals and bearings. The emulsion that came out is also a cause for concern and further investigation..
@@laurencehastings7473 Japan had no part in designing of or the engineering that went in to it. They have an engine plant there that's all. Polaris had a contract with them. They ended the contract, and now Polaris does everything themselves now.
A dam good mechanic is a very valuable person to know! I've got an excellent automobile mechanic and a very good small engine mechanic and they have saved me some serious money.

I'm ass deep in a 1996 polaris trailboss today. She's a runner, actually just needed good carb clean and spark plug. Two stroke been sitting out for 2 years, fun little project, just stinky fuel.
Nice one Joe, good content and well explained, next time, drain the water from the bottom of the radiator before taking the head and barrel of, this stops excessive water going into the motor giving a false content. Don't forget,, a good clean.

I was wondering if buying some machines at Copart, Insurance Auto Auctions etc. might be another opportunity for rebuildable deals. I love your videos. I am learning so much (what doesn't go in one ear and out the other). Have you ever considered an electric conversion instead of rebuilding when the engine is that bad? I think it would be fascinating to watch you convert an ATV with a junk motor to an eATV by pulling the engine components and replacing them with an electric conversion kit. It is the way of the future...
I honestly love that Polaris makes the transmission and the engine different components! There is one thing that you have to remember when you remove an engine from a Polaris is you need an engine alignment tool which goes over the primary and the secondary shafts to align them proper for belt engagement spacing! Being in your shoes, rebuilding these things you got this much time into it if the engine looks like that what about the transmission? That thing was Underwater at some point! It will have a Great running engine sure but now it’s got a gross transmission!! Personally, if I was waiting for parts, I would be going through the transmission!
Wow!!! Use to have the 2wd version of that one. Glad i sold it before anything like that happened to it. I will say though, it was a great running quad.
Oh man what a find Joe, your gonna need a bigger ultrasonic cleaner or a steam cleaner to get all that crap off. Can't wait for the final results, it's always exciting to see your video's.
This engine has had a lot of water in it, and judging by all the rust inside the cases I'd suspect it has been in a flood and not cleaned out properly afterward. If it has been in a flood there will likely be major electrical issues in future. Just food for thought. Cheers!
I can't believe this even ran. Unreal... Good job figuring it out. 2 questions: You didn't do a second compression check once it "dried out", why? You usually do, not that it would have mattered. Also, do you do the videos, in part, to figure out how to put stuff back together? You are really specific about where stuff goes and part numbers you found. You do pump out videos (as someone else said), you must work constantly. Great values.

You must have a massive collection of puller tools and specialty sockets. Do you think it was in a flood or sat in a pond over the winter, like it fell through the ice and was pulled out in the spring?

If it’s a 2 stroke the leak will be in the bottom end crankshaft seals. The head gasket will only leak under pressure from ignition, not just. Cranking. Cheers. It also looks like that quad has been underwater in a flood.
Just before you said gasket or crack, I was thinking they probably did the old pepper or other temp stop leak trick to sell it. I know nothing about bikes, but was scammed on my first car with a blown head gasket that way. exact same behavior. would run fine, then blow smoke. once the stop leak was gone, the engine was gone. It was an expensive intro to car ownership; but, oddly probably saved me thousands of dollars over the years. Now I am super parnoid about head gaskets. 😆
The blowing out of the radiator is usually only with severe cases when using just cranking engine speed. Its after its running if u go to rev it and the coolant begins to overpressurize itll push out the top and when held constant the coolant will actually have like a volcanic effect and erupt quite violently as well as continue to worsen until u turn the vehicle off.
If I were you Joe, 🎉I'd go ahead and get the entire engine hot tanked. Putting this back together the way it looks would only be asking for more trouble in the future.

No. The water pump seal failed and no one ever did anything about it. Just kept putting tap water in it until everything rusted out and failed.

Japanese engines? Polaris engines were assembled by Fugi ,made to Polaris specs.

I love your videos. I am learning so much (what doesn't go in one ear and out the other). Have you ever considered an electric conversion instead of rebuilding when the engine is that bad? I think it would be fascinating to watch you convert an ATV with a junk motor to an eATV by pulling the engine components and replacing them with an electric conversion kit. It is the way of the future...

I honestly love that Polaris makes the transmission and the engine different components! There is one thing that you have to remember when you remove an engine from a Polaris is you need an engine alignment tool which goes over the primary and the secondary shafts to align them proper for belt engagement spacing! Being in your shoes, rebuilding these things you got this much time into it if the engine looks like that what about the transmission? That thing was Underwater at some point! It will have a Great running engine sure but now it’s got a gross transmission!! Personally, if I was waiting for parts, I would be going through the transmission!
Sucks about the bottom end there, but its fully doable - great job as always.

Wow!!! Use to have the 2wd version of that one. Glad i sold it before anything like that happened to it. I will say though, it was a great running quad.
I believe the previous owner took the Polaris for swim and he knew it but Joe your opinion of a Polaris should change it’s a beast 😂😂

How about cleaning before disassembly so debris doesn't get inside!

This engine has had a lot of water in it, and judging by all the rust inside the cases I'd suspect it has been in a flood and not cleaned out properly afterward. If it has been in a flood there will likely be major electrical issues in future. Just food for thought. Cheers!

2 questions:
You didn't do a second compression check once it "dried out", why? You usually do, not that it would have mattered.
Also, do you do the videos, in part, to figure out how to put stuff back together? You are really specific about where stuff goes and part numbers you found.
You do pump out videos (as someone else said), you must work constantly. Great values.
Joe, Im no fan of these things so tend to ignore videos that are not MX bikes but this time I thought I would watch it to see what you see in this tat, must say you buy some junk but you sure know your way round them, good luck sorting it

That’s the closest thing to Joe cleaning a engine he cleaned it while he was spraying soap bubbles doing the leak down. Lol J/K Joe I love your videos!

I know for a fact i would not have the patience anymore to buy a problem child bike, let alone multiples of them like you do, and to document the repairs on top of it, you have patience in ample amounts.

Joe I had a Polaris sportsman 500 that was just as bad as that scrambler they are a treat to work on.

You must have a massive collection of puller tools and specialty sockets. Do you think it was in a flood or sat in a pond over the winter, like it fell through the ice and was pulled out in the spring?

if this quad was mine i'd strip it right down and give it a really good clean (everything) before putting it back together , it looks like its just been riden to death with no TLC , btw great videos mt ,new subscriber here yav only just popped into my feed and I love my bike videos

I had a 4 wheeler come through that looked similar to this one. It had been in a flooded basement that sat flooded for a week.

If it’s a 2 stroke the leak will be in the bottom end crankshaft seals. The head gasket will only leak under pressure from ignition, not just. Cranking. Cheers. It also looks like that quad has been underwater in a flood.
Just before you said gasket or crack, I was thinking they probably did the old pepper or other temp stop leak trick to sell it. I know nothing about bikes, but was scammed on my first car with a blown head gasket that way. exact same behavior. would run fine, then blow smoke. once the stop leak was gone, the engine was gone. It was an expensive intro to car ownership; but, oddly probably saved me thousands of dollars over the years. Now I am super parnoid about head gaskets. 😆
The blowing out of the radiator is usually only with severe cases when using just cranking engine speed. Its after its running if u go to rev it and the coolant begins to overpressurize itll push out the top and when held constant the coolant will actually have like a volcanic effect and erupt quite violently as well as continue to worsen until u turn the vehicle off.

I think the water pump seal is done...also a blowed head gasket that would explain the low compression...could be rings too...

If I were you Joe, 🎉I'd go ahead and get the entire engine hot tanked. Putting this back together the way it looks would only be asking for more trouble in the future.
