    Disco Elysium is one of the best roleplaying games you could hope to experience, provided you're looking for something savagely dark, political, and introspective.
    It's a game all about being a cop - a superstar cop, a bigoted cop, a cop of the apocalypse, a communist cop - whatever cop you decide to be based on the wealth of options that open up to you.
    Bearing a brutal wit and a deep, contemplative story about depression, addiction, societal struggles, and everything in between, Disco Elysium is one of the most fascinating games you can play this year.

    • @destroyerbreaker7394
      @destroyerbreaker7394 4 ปีที่แล้ว +60

      They are essentially your own party aside from Kim(or one character if things go a certain way) and if you raise that stat too much, they start talking more and more, actually being able to distract you or make you look insane.
      They also don't...always give good advice but it isn't always obvious, for example, at one point you meet a character that your stats like so damn much they act like there is no way this character is a suspect or has anything to hide, when said character has quite a bit of interesting stuff, though at least in that certain case, one of your stats will go ahead and warn you there may be a clear bias going on and tries to warn you, but this doesn't always happen, sometimes they really just trick you and don't warn you.
      So yeah, don't always listen to your stats, and try to avoid always putting stat points unless you want your character to look like an insane weirdo, had unspent skill points at the end of the playthrough precisely because of this, unlike many RPG's, putting too much points CAN hurt you in the end, unless you don't mind your character being so weird others find you too annoying or insane to work/talk to.

    • @GmodPlusWoW

    This truly is a "once in a blue moon" kind of game. There should exist a variety of games, I'm ok with this game not being for everyone, because that just means it can focus much more on its strengths and I appreciate that immensely.

    Jim, you may be happy to know that ZA/UM, the developer, has announced that they have a lot of content planned for this IP. It's based on a pen and paper role-playing setting that they developed over more than a decade (12 years, I think).
    The lead dev also has a novel in this universe that he plans to have translated to English. Given the relative lack of typos and grammatical errors, I'd love to see the same people translate that book.

Do they have to find some excuse, some reason to why the character isn't white or straight? What about forced "whiteness" then.

  • @petersanders9455
    @petersanders9455 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    I finished this game yesterday, and I played as my usual "first playthrough" archetype in any RPG game, which would be Neutral Good, with a tendence to Lawful. I ended up mix-maxing more often than not when coming to the stats, but the experience was golden. Then I decided to change it around, and I've started a Chaotic Evil run right away, in what I like to call the "Cop of Apocalypse" playthrough. In the first ten minutes, I conned a bar manager of all the money I owed him, I punched a 14 year-old in the face and tried to shoot a homophobic little girl in the chest, but I was too drunk to aim properly and ended up missing her instead - if you kill her, the game ends as you are stripped of your job. Right after that, I crushed the windpipe of a race suprematist and I resigned after the head of a Union bullied me, dying as a homeless man who would throw his own feces to passer-bies.
    The game rewards the way you build your character. In my first playthrough, my Empathy stat was my main one, and it always tried to lend me a hand whenever a person was suffering. A girl on the other side of the phone is on the verge of breaking down in tears? Empathy tells you to stop pushing your line of questioning, and instead try to reason with her, relate to her. The same scene as the Apocalypse Cop? My Half-Light - explained as the stat that increases how physically threatening you are and how harsh you are on people - actually tells me to ask her out, grab a cup of coffee, she's totally into me, and as soon as she refuses, he gives me the option to let her know that I'm a God. The same voice, Half-Light, as soon as I encounter an annoying character, starts telling me to "kill him, nobody would know".
    Now, the game is not perfect; it unfortunately lacks a tapestry ending which would have been extremely fitting and the ending - the "I solved the case" ending - feels a bit rushed and unsatisying. However, when a game has so much depth and rewards your different builds in such a drastic way... This game is great. It's incredible, and unique, and it deserves your time, as well as your money

    So I am brought back here in sadness as one of the most genuinely artistic piece of expression made using the gaming medium becomes PRODUCT.
    The original creators have been forced out of their own company, which is now hiring a 'Monitisation Specialist'. All of which feels like the sort of thing that Disco Elysium would have mocked. The fanbase has of course reacted very poorly to seeing something this creative and unique becoming just another BRAND.
    I know Jim already knows all that, but I still come here to think about what an absolute shame that is.
    It also does show Jim's point on how the money people come in, take the beautiful things the creatives made, then squeeze them for every penny they can while leaving the creatives to rot. This industry badly needs to be reformed.

      @@jammer5475 It's a long story, but imo it's a group of chronically single men that blame women for their lack of sex. Instead of just.. being single. It comes with its own ideology and belief systems. Incels tend to be alt-right as well. It's incredibly toxic. There's a crap ton more to it but I hope this helps.

    I still have no idea why I didn't watch this video when it came out, But when Jim did that video on positive content, I realisd I had not and filed it away to remember to watch at some point.
    So, yeah, you sold me on this enough Jim to put it on my Wishlist. (Apparently, it must have come up in my queue at some point and I didn't look to hard at it, since it was apparently tagged as "ignore.") Seeing the actual gameplay reminded me a lot of Planescape: Torment (one of my top three games of all times), so worth, one feels, a look.

    I absolutely loved my time with Disco Elysium, its probably my favorite game I played this year. The way it draws you into this absolutely hopeless world, the painful scenarios it puts you into, where it can feel like there is no correct way to go about something, or that there is something more that you are missing but you have no clue what, and the amazing dialogue and characters which all seem unique and fully thought through in their own respects, truly make Disco Elysium a great game. That being said, there are a few story related issues which I came across (that I won't go further into, obvs) throughout my play through, and in a game which is all about the story, these issues held back what could have been one of the greatest games of all time. Instead, Disco Elysium is merely one of the best games this year.
