    In this game, in the cutscenes, the story. Kojima carefully crafts a wonderful cake. Its an incredible cake made with the best ingerients. Kojima then proceeds to tell you all the ingredients of his cake and shows you how he put it together. Then at the end of it all, Kojima takes out a spoon and he sits in front of you, looks you in the eye and eats that fucking cake for you.
    Finally when you can stand it no more, kojima winks and tells you the cake tasted good.

      Some people with artistic talent desperately need a No man. Someone who can objectively look at ideas and say "no" or "holy fuck no". Richard Williams is a man constantly portrayed in many animation schools as a man who's vision was never realized with Thief and the cobbler. Persistance of Vision is an eye opening documentary and I feel that while Kojima (hopefully) isn't as mean as Williams, I am sure there are similar. Kojima is still great but we Sony needs to hire that No person and we should be grateful for them.

      I was half an hour away from finishing it, and I still didn't because the frustration at that point made me delete the game. It's like Jim said, this game really is obsessed with itself, and no better point does that stand out then when all of your vehicles are completely useless and you have to spend hours going through the snow Terrain. Hours upon hours, not looking at a beautiful Lush environment, but going through snow storms and you can barely see anything. I actually stopped delivering packages because anything you do in the game has absolutely no connection with the story anyway. Cliff was interesting, everything about him should have been the game, not the boring delivery guy who trips over rocks even without any packages on him.

    • @118halospartan
      @118halospartan 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      shindean If you were that frustrated with the game then you should have stopped playing it way before you got to the ending, also the mountains aren’t there to be looked at but to be conquered, which is feasible if you know how to place Zip Lines. In other words... no matter how frustrating the game gets, you’re given ways to make it easier, if you take the time to figure out how to. Also how many times are we gonna play a game which stars a person like Cliff? Cliff’s character represents the “dead end” that most games and franchises have reached, simply because developers and publishers are too focused on mass appeal to make games that are different. But Sam, the “boring delivery man,” represents the future of what kind of stories games should tell. We’re always playing as superheroes, and it was refreshing to literally be put in the shoes of a normal person who’s just as vulnerable as I, and everyone else is.

      @@HarryS77 I keep thinking about it when people say that games should always be "fun". The gameplay was repetitive, boring, and downright unpleasant, but overall it was one of the most immersive and powerful experiences I ever had with a game. I wonder if Death Stranding is somehow similar.

    • @HarryS77
      @HarryS77 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@Derevirn I sort of agree. Looking at it as an immersive experience-rather than as a game-is probably the best way to think of it. Being a little boring must've been part of the point. It would be strange to make a "fun" game about being a bureaucrat.
      The game succeeds in making you, even momentarily, into a person who is forced to scrutinize people's age, gender presentation, life story-essentially, to view your fellow humans by default as liars, scoundrels, criminals, terrorists, which is exactly the mindset of the bureaucrat, someone who views every member of society as somehow suspicious, hostile and dishonest, and who must be made to conform to ever-changing, inscrutable rules that you have the power to enforce but not the discretion to rescind.
      The design of the game is pretty remarkable, I think, though again this may require appreciating the way the game intentionally fucks with you in order to put you in the mindset of this overworked, underpaid government employee. For instance, there are a bunch of upgrades you can buy that do basically nothing to help you. They're a waste of money, and if you purchase them, it's likely that you won't be able to afford heating, rent, medicine, transportation, etc. In other words, the best strategy is actually to not play the game like a game, in which you're expected to want to upgrade your character. In the fiction of the world, that means that being a "model employee," investing in your job, really does end up having negative repercussions for your life and the lives of your family.
      Or take the way that the tray for your stamps will slide out but never far enough to reach the document where it lands on your desk, which means that you have to take a few precious seconds to maneuver the passport or whatever underneath the stamp. Or how about the fact-it's been a while since I played-but I seem to remember that the tranq gun is right next to the lethal gun, so, in a moment of panic, it's easy to grab the wrong one and kill the nondescript silhouette whom you meant merely to incapacitate. Even the way that every character enters as a silhouette and leaves as a silhouette-as if already forgotten, featureless-informs your character as a bureaucrat. The "fun" of the game emerges not so much from the moment to moment experience-though the introduction of an underground revolutionary movement certainly helps to propel one from work day to work day-but in the examination of how these mechanics affect and effect the world.
      I tried watching some Death Stranding gameplay, and in the first hour there was maybe 10 minutes of actual gameplay. Papers, Please meets Shadow of the Colossus might've made for an excellent (Kojima) game, but I don't think this is it. I think Kojima is the sort of person who produces his best work (MGS1, Zone of Enders, MGS3, parts of MGS2) when he has conform to technical or storytelling limitations, e.g. the hardware of the PS1 negating 2 hour cutscenes or the fact that MGS3 riffs on and basically sticks to a pastiche of spy thrillers. Death Stranding LOOKS amazing though. I don't think I've seen facial capture/animation in a game look quite this good.

    • @Derevirn
      @Derevirn 5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@HarryS77 The dreadful routine in Papers, Please was obviously intentional, and contributed in the immersiveness of the game. I'm wondering whether Kojima tried something similar with the repetitive gameplay of DS, or it was simply the result of poor design choices. Regardless, I understand that some people dislike such games, and prefer something simple and fun to enjoy themselves. We should keep in mind though, that video games are a unique interactive storytelling medium, that should not be limited to providing disposable "digital toys".
      P.S. Thanks for taking the time to write such an elaborate and detailed comment.

      Except when did that happen to Lucas? People just didn't like the squeals. His story telling was brilliant but the use of CGI and his acting choice wasn't great and people didn't like it.
      But it was no different from the original which he had total control over apart from a smaller budget for the first one. He brought in different directors for ESB and ROTJ but he harassed those directors and was so controlling they fell out and even had a break down. That is the way these people ARE they love their works. Kojima has produced many games even predating MG and MGS sometimes things work sometimes they don't. I think more the problem is people who follow this that have to be so absolute and dramatic. It was an idea maybe in the larger scheme of things it didn't work out or wants what people wanted. It doesn't mean these people or done ot have gone wrong rather that that particular idea or model just isn't as good. Who knows what they will make in the future. What annoys these producers and directors more than anything is that their works have to be joined together and they are judged on what they did before not on what the product is.
      Any actor artists hates this and sometimes it causes them to give up all together because people can't judge something on what it is. It always had to mean something more. It's just rediclous.
      Next game he makes might be amazing everyone has bad moments.

    This game is so interesting to me for the launch of it alone, I've been playing it for about thirty hours and it's quickly becoming one of my favorites even though objectively I should hate the gameplay because it's fetch quests, but there's something about finding the best route and optimizing how I'll get there and etc. that draws me in. Recently unlocked zip lines and spent a few hours creating a system of zip lines that take me to every destination in the current area and I had fun doing it. This game is such a love it or hate it that it just baffles me how people could hate it but then in this video I somehow agree with everything Jim said while simultaneously disagreeing. Lots of busywork, lots of fetching, but I find myself loving this where I hated RDR2 and maybe that's because I'm not forced into an inaccurate and unfun gunfight every five minutes.

Finally, John Cleese had had enough and stopped all that by simply asking: "Is smoke funny?" Their director realised smoke wasn't funny, so didn't matter, and so got on with things. As someone who was once obsessed with realism, people should realise that players are not their avatars; we can experience excitement while they are going through tough times; it’s called vicarious entertainment. We play games to have fun; if it gets tedious, people stop playing; we choose to play the game whenever we want, even though the avatars experience things they cannot opt out of.

    I didn’t think I’d like this game. I bought it at about half price mostly to have the grounds to criticize it and stewed for a week about whether I should play the damn thing or return it to Best Buy while it’s still wrapped. On paper, it is very much making the most annoying aspects of games the focus and undercooking the parts everyone loves, but it isn’t boring, it isn’t meditative. On paper, it sounds like the gameplay loop is about taking an unbearable grind and making it tolerable, but it’s more comparable to conquering a wild frontier to expedite deliveries and minimize the risks to reap the most of what you sow. It Demands your focus literally every step of the way by turning the terrain and the conditions of the world into the most dangerous enemy in the game. B.T. encounters are terrifying, although I haven’t yet used any of the countermeasures you’re provided. It takes the dreaded fetch quest and imposes unique parameters that force you to modify the paths you set for yourself. All the while, you’re also taking advantage of the provisions of others and the landscape almost ends up feeling like a character in its own right with its own developments that occur with or without your own alterations. It really won’t appeal to everyone, but it has to be said: reviewers have done the gameplay a grave disservice. The challenge just comes from a much more unorthodox place.

    After they destroyed their civilization to grant his wish and build his tower he climbs to the top and jumps off hoping to fly to the star but instead falls to the ground and dies leaving what little there is left of the civilization to mourn and regret and wonder why they destroyed their society for him.

      That's subjective though. I agree the writing was really pretentious (to the point where that one line near the end made me stop playing for two weeks), but lots of people can look past that because it's a new experience. People really do find wandering through the middle of nowhere, always on alert to preempt attacks by mules, terrorists, BTs and even the environment itself.
      No matter what you do (short of Digital Homicide level trash), someone, somewhere will see the best in your game and find it fun.

    So I think all these guys who got the early review copy missed out on some of the better features of the game. Jim isnt wrong about a lot of what he said. But the more im playing the game, the more im seeing how the community molds the world, Literally. Jim touches on it with being able to use other players ladders and bridges and such. But because he played through quick and not for an extended period he probably missed out on how the more people play, the more the world feels traveled.
    Ive been playing since release day, and on that first day the world was treacherous and rocky and not a single clear path to the next settlement in sight. But each time i fire up the game im noticing a rocky field now has a path where the rocks have disapeared making it simple to navigate. Then the next time there will be a light dirt road in that path making walking faster and less likely to lose balance. Then later that day that path was now a well traveled hard dirt road making the path through the once inhospitable field a breeze to walk.
    The more people play, the more the terrain seems to be getting carved out into roads based on the most traveled paths people take, the community is slowly making the game easier and easier to play and traverse.

    • @TheGoondas87
      @TheGoondas87 5 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      @@matthewbrasel2737 Without spoiling too much, one of the main purposes of the game is connecting settlements to a network. Before an area is connected to a network its basically barren and untouched. So the first time you go through an area itll be like nobodies been there. Once connected to the network, other players structures and signs will be made available and appear for you.
      These things will however disappear over time due to a rain that degrades things. But if a particular structure is popular or useful, players can provide materials to repair it and keep it in place.
      And you cant make buildings. Its mostly just traversal items like ladders, climbing ropes and bridges.
      You eventually gain the tech to make a safe house, but even that is like a small metal platform that works like an elevator that takes you below ground, it isnt a blight on the landscape.

    • @TheGoondas87
      @TheGoondas87 5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@sharif47 Hardly, it doesnt need fixing. In Bethesda's case they were lazy and made a broken game. With Death Stranding, the challenging terrain is intentional with built in mechanics to make it easier in whatever way you see fit, all to give the players a sense of accomplishment for carving out roads and paths together.
      Theres a rocky hill between two settlements? You can take a long smooth path around it, gradually carving out a smooth dirt path to make the trip simple and traversable with vehicles. Or you can try and traverse over it, planning an efficient combination of ladders and climbing ropes to leave an easy to follow climbing path thats more challenging but will save you and others time.
      The general travelling was only difficult to begin with anyway. I wonder how far Jim got, because by the time I got to the second area I was able to run around with heavy loads with no problem. I only occasionally had to really focus on my balance when I was carrying towering loads weighing like 300KG and climbing over giant jagged rocks.

Credits before and after every mission, obnoxious base micromanaging which feels like the foundation of a cut-at-the-last-time monetizing 'feature' (included nevertheless in the online component), not even a goddamn 'jump' button for the goddamn rocky terrain, you have to be next to the thing you want to jump, wait for the prompt, then press 'E'.
