Mark Flanigan honestly? I love this song and many of the live performances found on youtube, for me this is by far the worst of them all. just looks and sounds a mess!
He hit the “Mars” note so well and so strong!! There is a conversation going on over on the TH-cam video for this song in its original official video. It’s a terribly difficult note to hit and warble. He did it well as a younger person and he did a great job here when he was considerably older. He always sang well! I heard him sing with a hoarse voice once but that can happen to anyone. Great voice even though he often said he didn’t have a great voice. He had quite an admirable range.
I saw a few times when his voice was tired sounding. The Glass Spider tour especially he sounded hoarse. His voice was always strong but I've never heard him sounding better live than in 2002 when he'd packed in the smoking.
@@Alianger I prefer the higher A# as it suited his Ziggy style..this is more akin to his later 'David Live' era and his ch ch ch changing from his ambiguous days to his safer Volvo performances..?
@@antoniopalmero4063 did people know in advance that he would be there , or was it a spontaneous happening cause he was on his way to Cornwall, and because he was skint decided that he had better get some work to buy fuel to get to Cornwall?

In the concert footage for 'Christiane F', filmed by Ulrich Edel at New York's Hurrah nightclub October 1980, Bowie is sporting the same look apropos James Dean.
I just watched a G.E. Smith interview the other day where he spoke of his relationship with Bowie and then playing with him on the very last Tonight show with Johnny Carson.
For me the best version of this live by a long way. Sounds far from the original but captures all its power. Love this band. Shame they didn't all tour together. The drumming is fucking outstanding!
I first heard CHANGES when it came out in'71 and he's been my favorite muscian ever since. His ability to keep re-inventing his sound is staggering. IMOO the most talented artist is music history. I hope he has another album in the works.
There is life on Mars after hearing that incredible performance coz I can still hear his voice reverberating back from that planet through time and space forever like a residual Echo
His voice was hauntingly clear :(. It's eerie now how I hear it, and you're left with what you remember. You know what I mean, you hear it because it's so clear, and then, you know you're not gonna hear it again.
There is another live version sang so beautifully on Anna Apreleva’s TH-cam with a simple piano accompaniment with Mike Garson. He hits the Mars note there too. Very good to see as many versions as we can. Thank you.
I was so excited he was going to be on Carson. I saw it in tv guide. I was 14 then. I did notice though at the time he wore a duplicate outfit of James Dean in Rebel Without A Cause. What a cool touch by Bowie.
The JC show was the previous month on 3rd September. The mimed Station To Station for CF movie was filmed at the Hurrah Club, New York in October 1980. Directly after filming the Christane F. sequence, DB carried on using the exact same set for his 'Fashion' promo video
@Sincopare The next song in the set was Ashes to Ashes and Johnny Carson had announced it was a space theme , one old and one new to bring the set together. I hope this explains it, the full set is on youtube if you look,be well and happy
Best video and audio quality I've seen uploaded of this performance. Can we have the entire two-song set of both "Life On Mars" and "Ashes To Ashes" in one clip, at this quality? That would be awesome! Thanks :D
+Gem G Yes, I know that. My clip was sourced from a 'best of' Carson anniversary special where they replayed clips from the past...and for whatever reason, they chose not to include Ashes to Ashes.
His voice, HIS VOICE...
Right!? RIGHT!?
Yesssssss
Now kids, THAT's how you sing it live!

1980 - he's so young, but just think of all the amazing music he had already written at that point - I mean, genius level stuff, over and over!
@ say 40 years young and it's young, easy
Fernando Graça no man, he was turning mid 30s here
@ No, he was 33.
@@TinyDancer250 Still, 33 is hella young considering he still worked in his 60s. And yes, before 33 he had already reached genius level.
@@elgatocapibara Correct.
So charismatic, so iconic, so brilliant. My hero for nearly 50 years now.
Never could take him or understand him, got it all after his death. How weird.
Something special here. You could her the vibrato echoing off the sound stage. He was amazing.
His voice didnt change much over the years, it was his style of singing that changed and also his personas
His voice change lots over his career

I checked this now and he takes it down from A# to F# I think (not that he hasn't hit as high or higher notes since), but it does sound great.

James Dean meets Ziggy Stardust
We'll never see this kind of brilliance again. It's not just the beauty of Bowie, it was the right time. Now they're both gone.
Yes and we were alive when he was
What a shame that Scary Monsters never got the tour it deserved. Judging from this performance it would have been something very special.
Agreed! Really sad.. It could have been one of his greatest Tours.
True.
oh my God his James Dean outfit and crooner voice and gorgeous song, I cannot even -- thanks for uploading, it's beautiful
This voice is just too much to be true. RIP
A must-see for David's fans.
Seen thousands of his videos and this is one of the finest.
this is my favourite live version of life on Mars
He's such a gift to the world...
3:13 natural vibrato and great resonance. 😍
great version, Bowie's charming bass and GE Smith's inspiring guitar sound🎉
R.I.P. Starman..... so missed tonight.
Such a amazing artist. His voice touch me deeply.
amazing drum sound .. also those ARP strings give me the chills
+fernando perdomo yes! those flompy drums and arp strings! so dated but in a great way!
One his best performances of this song hands down.. So much energy, passion and emotion put forth by Ziggy... R.I.P.
You're not dead, you've just decided it was time to lift off. Have a safe trip back home Dave...say hi to Elvis for me
Amazing version of one of my favorite songs !
He is singing great as usual , and the band Rocks !
Excellent comment .... hope my YT Bowie songs makes him smile from far far away.
Wonderfully raw live performance, I watched him live in a small pub in Dorset , etched in my memories for ever.

I'm 17 and David Bowie was my childhood favourite
One of my fave versions of this song...looked for it for YEARS...remember staying up as a kid just to watch it...BOWIE'S ON!!!!
G.E Smith after he left Hall and Oats to lead the NBC band. Very young here. He killed with Hall and Oats live!
Always a great performer and class act till the end. R.I.P David Bowie.

what a voice
1980 - great year for Bowie.
Check out his move at 2:47, referencing Johnny Carson's monologue closing. Genius.
but much more gay-like lol

thanks, I've had an mp3 since long but never saw the actual performance. The way he ends the chorus with "aa-ha-haars" always cracks me up.
