Pro tip, if you use davinci resolve, grading s log 3 is as easy as dropping a color space transform into a node in the color page. Then create serial nodes before the CST to make contrast and brightness adjustments.

    Hi Matt,
I think the best thing to do to work at a wedding is to choose cinema4, this profile gives a lot of quality, it is more versatile and faster when using it, working with slog3 in this type of work may not work since with this profile you always need to manage the image within specific parameters that sometimes the light conditions do not allow, especially so that the image works well in post-production.

Love the video Matt, but as an FX6 user, I was a little disappointed to be led on considering you can't change the picture profile settings in the same way as all of these other cameras as they are all mirrorless cameras and have a different menu and different profiles to my FX6 :( thank you for creating this still though!

    • @whoismatt
      @whoismatt  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I know this video is old but one thing; 3:50 - you can get great color and no slog blotches and better noise on a7iii with slog3 if you change the color mode to 709 (IUT709). on gamma display assist it will look bad, but once you convert gama to 709 it will look amazing. you don't even need to convert the colors to 709. much less noise, much sharper image, much better colors on 8 bit sony cameras

  • @NeilSnapePhotography

As I am just getting into Sony world now with a A7RIIIa, I've watched your videos over and over again. I know it is not even close to the potential of a 7sIII yet I just tried with sLOG 3 set to (hope this is correct) found Gamma Cine4, as I was looking in Color Mode.. Popped it into Resolve, set the color management to yRGB color managed and set the clip to Sony Slog 3. That is so cool, after I just color corrected a bit with the waveform. Oh I overexposed 0.7 stops. Works so well!

Hello Matt, thanks for your video. However, I am afraid your recommandation is a wrong one. I bought a second hand Sony A7SM2 and I am checking how to best use it. If I follow your proposal to change the PP8 profile by moving to Gamma Cine4... well this simply change that profile from a Log profile to a classical profile. That's it. You can confirm this by the fact, on a Log profile, the minimum ISO level is 1600. Here if you change the Gamma profile to Cine 4, you have even access to ISO 100 showing you are no more in Log profile... What set the Log profile is the Gamma you choose, nothing else. PP8 is just a place to memorize your choice, not a place that fixes the Log profile for the camera.

Thanks for doing this Matt. What about extreme low light scenes where it isn't possible to over expose? I'm guessing slog 3 wouldn't be the best PP as dynamic range here isn't as important here as keeping noise out of the shadows? What would be the best PP settings to go with for this sort of situation?

the problem of cine4 is that you have very little room to adjust local light amount (balancing shadows and high lights with the right middle-contrast). Anyway is sad Sony don't provide firmware updates with cinetone to older cameras, it's only software

Hey Matt, I have a sony a7 iii, but I found that when using picture profiles the autofocus breaths a lot and struggles to lock on to a subject, etc. By shooring with the picture profile off the autopfacous is much better. This is obviusly a issue as you lose dinamic range. Have you also found this problem and if so any reccomendations?

I don't usually shoot with it because its seems still a cloudy subject, the ISO 640 and 12800, should I use only in does two options...I felt that I should use only when I would need a better dynamic range otherwise the normal just looks fine....yes all that will be nice to know from you :)

Is it normal that I need a fair amount of ND filtering to use PP8 outside? (F2.8 16mm)

Hi Matt, your videos have been extremely helpful and specific to the detail. really appreciate your work. May I ask, how can I set the settings for Slog3 on my older Sony RX10 IV? I do not see Cine4 in the options. Can I opt for something else? My camera version is updated to 2.0. Your guidance will be appreciated. Best wishes.

Thank you for this Matt! Really appreciate it. For sure do more in depth SLog3 and Cinetone videos! Two things, SLog3 became cumbersome to edit and use during darker reception shots even with good lighting. I also kept needing to adjust exposure constantly to get close to 2.0 MM and sometimes on the quick fly that meant using my shutter for exposure unfortunately. For Cinetone, I was sort of hoping this would be a great overall PP especially for more indoor, event settings. Id probably still grade it a bit, but was curious if it would be better than grading PP0 or even Cine4 (which is what I shoot everything with now). Thanks!

    Hi Matt
I'm using an A74 and an FX3 together, PP8 is no longer available on these bodies, have you done a work around video at all? Or have any suggestions?

Have you tried the ”Cine4” gamma with the ”S Cinetone” color? Better dynamic range with nice colours.

Another question if I may. How much adjustment do you do prior to applying your LUT. Should I apply it first then make changes? Change contrast before the LUT? Set white and black point first. I'm unsure how to get the most out of the LUT. Thanks. You're great

Hey! I usually apply the lut first then adjust from there :)

For night I think PP2 is the way to go. It looks fantastic with not a lot of grading to get it looking oh so good!!!
