Like George, I am also an interpreter. I will attempt to intepret his cough. So, when George says at 27:53 that book 5 may be releasing in October of 2019, he means 2020 at the earliest. 😛

25:39 I was FASCINATED when I found out about the word ググる. (To Google!)
A native English word getting borrowed, coincidentally sounding like a verb, then turned into a verb by making the last syllable functional, thereby creating its new Japanese conjugations. ググる、ググった、ググらない、ググらなかった and everything else in between.
And of course we can't forget about its polite conjugations: ググります、ググりました、ググりません、ググりませんでした
    これをググっていた時に、興味深い情報で「脳が震える!」と思っていた!
I'm not too much of a fan of all of the language borrowing that happens in Japanese, but this is just innovative as hell.

I wonder if you thought about doing a similar video about 'わけ’?
I hear it a lot in drama and in I've got a feeling all those different expressions mean something a little different...
Like ○○わけじゃない、○○わけには行けませ(or行きません?)、○○わけがないよ! - that one is usually more expressive I think. And sometimes it's just used when talking about others, as if it could mean their intentions? Just thought about it when watching this video, but it's been bugging me for a bit now 🙈
In any case, really good lesson as usual! Always a pleasure to see you both (those videos are somehow a lot more funny and real)

George, I had a request. Could you make a video for "safety net words"? What I mean is like safe go-to words and phrases when you can't think of a word. Like "this thing" instead of "this (Noun)". Same with verbs. A "can do" verb for when you can't think of the verb you mean. Thanks!

The difference between dictionary form + bakari and te form + bakari was hard to understand at first.
For anyone confused, this is the difference:
Dictionary form + bakari means, the only thing you do is that verb; its used to emphasize that this ONE thing is more or less the only thing being done.
Whereas te form + bakari is describing something that is happening on a continual basis; its always happening or happening very frequently.
    Example:
    あの2人はけんかするばかりだ。
All they do is fight. Its trying to convey an idea that the only thing they really do is fight.
    あの2人はけんかしてばかりだ。
They are always fighting. It does not imply in any way that fighting is the ONLY thing they do. But they are fighting on a regular basis, very often or always.
    Example:
    “(Persons name)はたべるばかりじゃん!”
    All you do is eat!
    Or
    All they do is eat!
    “(Persons name)はたべてばかりじゃん!”
    You’re always eating!
    Or
    That person is always eating!
Its almost the same thing; just a different emphasis.
Notes: i have also heard japanese people shorten ばかり to ばっか and ばか when speaking informally.
Also, some teachers teach てばかり as てばかりいる。
I dont know if there is a difference or if its just another way of saying it.

    京アニの放火事件でお亡くなりになった方々のご冥福を祈るばかりです。
6:58 I think, When you use 鳴く(なく), 声(こえ) is a better word than 音(おと). Even if the sound came from insects.
There is a little subtle different nuance between 音 and 声.
Commonly 声 is used for only some kind of insects (like cicada, cricket). So perhaps I use 音 without 鳴く when hear sounds from the other kinds of insects.
I'm sorry I don't have clearly reference points to categorize insects sounds.
    Thanks.

    • @japanesefromzero
      @japanesefromzero  5 ปีที่แล้ว

Poor Kanako.... she made that sentence.

    • @Yamippon
      @Yamippon 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I was thinking about that too.
I think insects are better with 音
Birds would be better with 声 (in that case 鳴き声 rather than 鳴く声)
When I first read it out, I said “Ne” instead of “Oto”, but “Ne” is actually not wrong.
You could totally say “Nakune” and I personally think it’ll make a word in between “声&音”
Just because “Ne” sounds prettier than “Oto”😄

I'm not used to George looking so professional.
This is probably (most def.) not the place to ask, but what ever happened to his Chinese studies: after about six months of studying Chinese
he should be able to write book one.
