There was a time that I scoffed at the idea that "online education" would one day make colleges obsolete. But this channel really makes me think that is the future. Lessons like these are 100 times more useful and valuable than anything I learned in a formal class. Plus, I can rewatch parts if I don't follow the first time. I can pause it to write things down. These are so good.
wardm4 totally agree with you. misa really makes sure that she clarifies what she means. she gives multiple examples and addresses many of the questions i have in my head- most of the time in school i have to raise my hand to have it answered. you can really tell that misa cares about her viewers.
The fact that textbooks wait so long to teach you explanatory particles, and then completely neglect to explain how they're used practically in conversation is absurd to me. Understanding how these particles are used in casual Japanese allowed my listening skills to improve in a week more than they had in the last two months. You'll hear の、んだ、んだけど just as much as ね、よ、and other sentence ending particles when you listen to spoken Japanese. This should be one of the first things you ever learn, not tucked away in a footnote. It was after I had a decent understanding of these particles that I began to lose all faith in the practicality of textbooks. Thanks for the explanation Misa, it's not only extremely clear but will be extremely helpful for so many students out there!

I must say that this video is the first time in years of learning Japanese that I heard someone makes a clear connection between the particle used in かわいいの？ and the particle used in かわいいんだ. This is eye opening indeed.

んだ is one of the phrases that I always have a difficulty using in actual speech. I never felt I understood the context enough to use it until now. Your explanation was better than my textbook was. You have such great lesson! You are the closest think to my Japanese for Everyone book that I used when I formally studied in college. Your ability to explain Japanese grammar like an English text book would is so awesome. I instantly became a fan because of that.

Omg I'm so surprised at the first slang expression you talked about because there is one that is almost the same in Italian! When we hear a new/weird word, sometimes we go: "Cos'è? Se magna?" = "What's that? Do you eat it?" 😂 Crazy how languages can be so different but so similar!
Studying for N3 right now and it's kinda infuriating that these widely used grammar patterns aren't explained in most JLPT material found online. You explained it in a really straight forward way and I finally understand why so many sentences end using んです、なのです or なんです Thank you so much!

the most amazing discovery in this lesson was the fact that we use the same idiom in Serbian for when we don't know about something that's just mentioned. Much like in Japanese, instead of "whaaa" we say "Јел се то маже на хлеб?" meaning "do you spread that on bread?" and I think it's beautiful

This has to be among the best series of language lessons in any language anywhere. Consider supporting Misa on Patreon, even if you never listen to the premium lessons. BTW, I think the use of "n da" to express that you are drawing a conclusion on the basis of evidence has a correlate in English, namely "must". As in "Misa must like pink," or "Oh, you must've heard that in one of Misa's Japanese Ammo lessons." Native English speakers all say this naturally. I think this way of using the term "must" is nowadays much more common than its traditional normative usage as in "You absolutely must see Fleabag."
I really like how you utilize the usage of your visual aids with color coded kanas.. It really makes the sentence easier to to read and translate.. Also the amount of explanation you do especially when there are alot of nuances or similarities wether it is small or big is highly appreciated.. We do the same in Dutch! When someone says a foreign word we say: "Wat is dat? Kun je dat eten?" which translates to: "What is that? Are you able to eat it?"

in filipino it's the same. "ano yan? nakakain ba yan?" which translates to "what is that? is that edible?"

Yeah, also in French, if you want to sound dumb, you can ask : "Est-ce que ça se mange ?" ("can it be eaten?")
also in spanish, when we don't know a word we often say "¿qué es eso? ¿se come?" which means "whtat's that? can it be eaten?

i love that you mention how these grammar points would translate into not only talking irl but also talking online :) a lot of the time i found myself wondering if i needed to add this grammar to make my sentences sound more natural and it was really confusing. it was one of the grammar points i always worried about in class but this video is the first time i feel like i might be able to understand it :)
