I think the Ronco deserves the props for working as good as it has in its 60 years.

My issue is it might have never been uses. New stock canneasily keep up if irs never been used. Also laws changed
I think that the biggest "problem" with Ronco is that the blade is too big so it requires more slaps to get the same result as oxo or slapchop

I just bought an Oxo chopper. It's really well made but I'm having a hard time taking it apart-for cleaning. (a practice run) I'm hoping that once I get the hang of it, it'll be just fine.

Try turning outside of onion up before chopping, that way you are chopping through it first, the rest will chop the same.
I agree when you chop an onion you do not cut on the cut side you chop from the skin side.
I also remove the tough dried layers, and it looked kinda like he left some of the drier layers on, which are in and of themselves tougher to chop, regardless

@@HzFvr I still have my Chop O Amatic , in fact I think I have just about every product that Ron did a infomercial on ! It's too bad that they filed bankruptcy and were bought out ! Billy Mayes was never as good , maybe because he put to much stuff up his nose 😑
The good chef has the best one out!!! A little overpriced but it opens at every angle so you can properly clean it most of them do not open everywhere !!!!And start smelling like mold or have old food stuck in the upper portion!! We're the blades !!! Contract from !! As you slap it !! So yeh !!! The best one out of the three is the old one probably easiest to clean!! The Good chef one!! That is overpriced as hell is the best!!! One! I actually got mine from a yard sale for $0.50 cents !! Got lucky !!!But it's awesome thought I'd buy a second one but they're like $50 so yeh way over priced but awesome!!! So 50$ might actually be worth it!! I use it all the time !!! Anyways my thoughts and opinions!!!

An unknown fact is how much use has the Ronco had, even though it's 60+ years old. I'd go with the Oxo because I find their products superior as a rule. I also like the Pampered Chef chopper. Good review, thanks.
I have the Pampered Chef chopper and tbh, I prefer my clam shell chopper. I can dice half a small onion in one push and no tears. Also the clam shell has various chopper blade sizes to make uniform pieces for other uses.
What memories... The Chop O Matic was in my house. My mom used that for every meal she ever made. I even remember that box! Thanks for posting
In the year 2082, we shall revisit the Oxo to see if after 63 years, it can still compete like the Chop-o-matic did.
Everything made by Oxo is amazing quality. Especially for todays standards.
I have an Oxo can opener and the rubber outer handles detached from the metal main part. It still functions fine but the exposed metal doesn't look good and is rusty.

Obviously you need to put the onion skin side up. Also, the mere fact that the RonCo chopper's plastic is still solid after all this time is amazing, and makes it the winner in my opinion.

The ice test sealed the deal. OXO utensils are well made & durable. My go-to brand has never disappointed me yet. Fun review!
The Popeil Bros was Ron's dad Samuel Popeil's Company. Sam invented the chop-o-matic and veg-o-matic but Ron taped the demonstration for the chop-o-matic which started his infomercial career! Keep up the great videos!
The Oxo one's difference is the mechanism that turns the chopped stuff as you're chopping, which allows greater amount of chopped up goodness, so I'd go with that one. Awesome vid as always James thanks mate! Love seeing vintage gadgets tested!
The oxo "plunger" also had a greater surface area so I would imagine it is alot less fatiguing/painful to slap that for extended periods of time compared to the other smaller ones
oxo just proves that not everything has to be expensive to be good
The Oxo worked well, I think the edge scraper helped out a lot.
I think you should of showed disassembly and how easy each one was to clean. I know with the slap chop one of Vinces selling points was slap chop was easier to clean compared to others, curious if that's the case or not.
I have the oxo, completely disassemble for cleaning. I was wondering how the others cleaned up too.
My guess is it’s pretty easy because no one uses it. (Just joking hahaha)

My mom had a Chop-o-matic from the 70's that she used for over 20yrs, the blades never got dull.
The guy who works for oxo in inventing/ improving/ creating tools is actually on a youtube channel. Its really fun to watch him try kitchen gadgets and show the redesign process. You can see why oxo is so good because of the tests he puts the products through.
LOVE OXO products for their form, function, and durability! Have to give Ronco props for creating the original blade design that everyone else has duplicated!
Oxo seems nice and surprised 1956 one actually works so well. I got slap chop long ago and haven’t use anymore.

I got the middle one brand new from goodwill a few months ago. I love it.
Yes I have used the one from the 50s as my mother had one with a red top and the little cutting board. Which both sold quickly at the estate sale of her house about 5yrs ago now. In fact all her 40s/50s kitchen items were the first things grabbed by people. I only remember walnuts being chopped with the chopper, but even a kid could do it.
The oxo seems to be more consistent overall, so it's got my vote
Looks like the oxo spins the food which helps I don't know for sure, but that's what it looks like.
I wouldn't really call oxo affordable, they are a mid tier price and quality and some of their stuff is 'over engineered' to justify the prices, like a $15 bottle brush. They make good products but nowhere near professional level or for daily use, but also far more expensive than a basic cheap option like a dollar store oven mitt vs oxo's $15 one, they arent the same, but for simple baking the dollar store one will last years.
Insane how much I assumed the oxo was just a poser and wouldn’t work, but I think it was the obvious best.
Hey James. I think you completely missed a MAJOR feature of the Slap Chop.... Its ability to open up, like a butterfly, to clean it. I noticed you didn't mention cleaning at all, for any of the models. I would appreciate any follow up, and thanks for your videos, and keep up the great work!
I think this video was more to show how good they are at chopping.

I think the oxo should be the recommended. It consistanly remained either the best or equal.
For me, it's all about how easy specialty gadgets are to clean and compare it to cleaning the alternative. In this case, a knife. A knife would win not only in ease of cleaning but also storage space.
This was a cool comparison and I liked seeing the evolution of the product over the years. Definitely, the little things have improved.

Omg.. i was watching the slap chop infomercial and then wanted to know if it was any good, so I watched this video and never knew about the Chop-o-Matic. I wanted to know if Ron Popeil was still alive and turns out, he died yesterday..! May he rest in peace.❤

The chopomatic is at a disadvantage because it has a larger cutting chamber with more widely spaced blades. If the chopomatic was filled as much as the smaller choppers were with the test items it would have chopped as finely. It can chop bigger items or more of the smaller items. It was a well deserved win . Very interesting video.
I watched this twice, so amazing. In a kitchen with very little electricity, this appeals to me no end. My sister watched it and got me an early Christmas present, the Oxo chopper!
We had a Chop-O-Matic when I was a little girl, and I thought it was the most amazing thing ever. I'm glad there are new versions of it

I totally got a vintage food chopper from the 50s from my grandma. I never used it though so I took it to Goodwill.
My favorite feature on the OXO is that rotation function that turns the food as you chop it, so the blades don't hit the same way every time.
Love the comparison with the older stuff.

I’m an 80’s kid. My mom purchased everything second hand or just got hand me downs. We had that exact Ronco chopper. I used it as a kid to save myself the torture of cutting onions.
I used to be obsessed with Ron Popeil’s products when I use to stay up late and watch infomercials on the weekends lol. I never knew he was old enough to be around way back in the 50’s. Great products

We had an original chop-o-matic. My Dad loved any kind of gadget. We had many of Ron Popeil's stuff. Dad even had the pocket fisherman, that he used! Worked great!
when I was a kid in the 70's, we had one of those 1956 Ronco choppers, it worked as well after 20 years of use as it did new.
The onions may not have been easy on your eyes but you are definitely easy on my eyes. 😀
The oxo is definitely the best while the chop o matic did great the oxo finely chopped up the ingredients better not to mention The improvements to the cup.

Which was easiest to use? The OXO looks great after the first few slaps, and usually best at the end, plus it seems like covering the spring might be a nicer design for your hands (less chance of pinching your skin)
I grew up in the 80s and we had one of these choppers ( don't know the brand), and it was basically an X shaped set of blades with a top like the Ron chopper from 1956, only the top screwed onto a glass Mason jar type bottom. It was great, and we used it mainly for onions so we wouldn't cry or smell like onion.

I noticed in the Chop o Matic infomercial that Ron moved the chopper as he was hitting it. I wonder if Vince was doing that in the Slap Chop commercial, but less noticeably and if that would improve the results for the Chop o Matic and Slap Chop.
I'm 31 and my mother had "The Chop-o-Matic" back when I was growing up. It was a great tool. Great for making coleslaw and fun for kids to help in the kitchen. I'd honestly come to the same conclusion as you did, I might give a slight edge to the oxo, but I'm not a fan of the smaller cutting area.
You should have flipped how you positioned the onion. Your results would have been better

I have the slap chopper and it came with a glass jar. It still works great for having for about 10 years.
I had the updated Chop-O-Matic like 15 years ago when I bought the Popeil mandolin and would use it every once in awhile. Once I got really good with a cleaver and proper chef knife though I stopped using gadgets. I inherited my cleaver from my grandma who inherited it from her dad who was a cook, it's an old bamboo handled Chinese style cleaver. Thing is still sharp as hell even though it's like 120 years old, I just have to give it a few passes on the sharpening stone and de-rust it every once in awhile.
I have a Pampered Chef chopper, similar in design to the 2nd one, but from the mid-1980s. It works well and is all clear and the base screws into the top piece. The top piece opens in haf and is very easy to clean. Its been in use for 35 years and shows no sign of blade wear or plastic breakage, and it was free, given to us by my wife's aunt!
We had on of those chop-a-matics way back when I was kid, used it often and it worked well especially on family Taco night (tip:put your onion on its side so the thicker outside layer gets hit by the blade first) it worked great for many years. If I cooked more I'd get the OXO

I still have the 1956 chopper and use it. It was my Mom’s. I do not use it much but it still does the job. My Mom used it mostly to chop up pecans - which we had 5 pecan trees in our yard - to make her delicious pecan pies.
I still have a 50's vegematic, works very well. I was around 9 years old when my mother bought it. I have been using it myself for 15 years.
Oh yes, I'm old and my folks had the Chop-O-Matic. Worked great when you have to cut up stuff for a family of six kids, lol! Pre-food processor days too. I even found one at a garage sale after I got married and used it for many years. I finally went to just a knife because I got tired of having to wash it, that was a pain to do. Now I drag out my food processor as the slapping kills my hand. I even have three different sizes of food processors as they are just too handy.

I have not used one of them, but I have two later models similar to the chop-o-matic(but with cups) and they just sit in the cupboard.
Well, that was cool as heck! That old chopper was just one year older than I am. And I don’t like onion chopping either. 😂 I love this new trend where you find these vintage gadgets to test against the newer versions! You are wonderful!

It’s amusing that the first demo for the oldest one was crushing ice-that cocktail hour was pretty important in the day. LOL.
Now I can see why my dad got himself the OXO Chopper a few year before my 21st birthday and my birthday is 9/30/1994. He really like to use it with hot peppers.
I have a Chop-O-Matic that my Mom bought new in 1956. The plastic knob broke about 60 years ago and my Dad replaced it with an small style solid brass doorknob. It still works great! The problem you are having is because you are not hitting it hard enough. Hit it hard enough to cut all the way through something!

My dad got one of those Chop-O-Matics when he was in college for the first time in the fifties, he used that thing until the day he died. Damn thing is almost 70 years old and still working fine. Somehow I doubt the Slap Chop or the Food Chopper will be in the same shape in 70 years...

My mom had a Chop-o-Matic forever. It lasted at least 20 years of hard regular use before it finally broke. And we would have gone right out and bought another one, but by that time, they were no longer made.
One major oversight in this test is that that Chop-o-Matic from 1956 probably has seen a lot of use and its blade isn't nearly as sharp as it was when it was new. The other two look like they have a lot less miles on them. I bet that Chop-o-Matic with a sharp blade would have been amazing.

My house had a chop-o-matic type manual chopper, but it was a different brand sold at fairs. This chopper dated from the 60's, and was still in use until around 2000 when it got dropped, and broke. lol Great product, remember using it often before we got our Cuisinart.

Should have added a "cleaning" test. In the commericals, the biggest improvement that was touted over the existing choppers is how much easier that slap chop is to clean.
The Gemco one is what my mom has. She got it as a Christmas gift from her job in the early 1980s. The blades on it move and it makes a nice slaw and will chop nuts into a powder if you don't watch. I think Gemco is somehow related to Corelle.
I’ve had a Pampered Chef chopper for at least 10 years, and it’s still working, however, it’s my second one. Tried chopping a few ice cubes with the first one, and that trashed the blades. Tip: Cut onion in half and place cut side down.

Would be great if you can compare lots of food choppers/cutters to see what's the best. Maybe some categories to compare, ease to use, uniformity in end result, ability to clean, size it takes in your kitchen, etc.
