I Played Against LSV Going For Rank 1 | Duskmourn Draft | Mythic 28 | MTG Arena

- People seem to absolutely love Duskmourn as many of the top content creators are going for Rank 1 this month. This includes the great LSV, who is taking a break from getting carried by BK in cube drafts to play some Duskmourn. We had the absolute fortune of getting getting paired against him while he was Rank 2. Can we pull off the dream crush or will the Hall of Famer take us down?

so good! If I may paraphrase LSV from a few days ago "Paul Cheon is also going for mythic, there is a chance I will get paired against him, that will be a nice boost for my rating"
J U S T I C E
Hitting the Oculus on the first manifest was a main character moment. Rank 1 is your destiny!
Paul knowing you're playing there alone at your desk but still jumping up in joy at that Game 1 Oculus manifest was a vibe. Great draft man! And even better you ran into LSV haha!
Yeah it was an epic draft for sure
You, LSV and Nummy are the only limited content creators I watch, so its fun watching you all going for number 1.
I agree that this format is very fun, although I don't love the horror flavor and much preferred the cute Bloomburrow flavor, I can't deny the gameplay has been quality.
I also like Paul & LSV but would highly recommend Dafore as well. He's a beast.
Play Pokemon...the game's already been nerfed enough
@@brucesmith1544what
@@brucesmith1544 Pokemon is straight garbage.
Chord_of_calls and sierkovitz are so good!
My two favorite content creators battling for #1. Let's go!!!
Love the description "the great LSV, who is taking a break from getting carried by BK in cube drafts"
😂
Also managed to catch you streaming for the first time last weekend. Was really fun!
Glad you've been enjoying the content!
LSV is enjoying the format so much he *accidentally* ended up in rank #2
Nobody accidentally hits Rank 2. He's been playing a lot.
@@haumph Yeah I did hear him say on Limited resources he’s drafted 50 times and that was last week lol.
@@haumph Dig where the dopamine is rich. if he's picking up rank along the way, it could still be "accidental". But yeah. If he was serious about not reaching for rank 1 he'd be in the Bo3 queues instead of the people with busy lives queues
@@mesalikes Perhaps a better word would be "incidental"...and he is a person with a busy life, so I can't blame him for choosing bo1
Mr Beast should do a MTG TH-camr tournament with Lifesize Cards.
I was also really surprised that you didnt pick up the cryptid inspector p3p7, we were lacking creatures and that card seemed really good in your deck
he doesn't like cryptid inspector and I don't blame him
@@DiscardatRandomcard is good in his deck and solves his "no creatures" problem
@@DSR505 it would’ve been reasonable yeah
I was also surprised. I dont disagree that windbreaker > cryptid in the average UG deck, but 4x growing dread, ~10x total manifest count and only 7 creatures is not the average UG deck
@@DiscardatRandom crryptid inspector is pretty bad but windbreaker is basically wind drake in this deck and cryptid just gets your creature count to a point where growing dread will actually do something beyond be a flash grizzly bear
Haha that freaking thumbnail I love it.
My second match at the prerelease manifested Oculus game 1, and then game 2 manifested 2 of them, one off the other! It felt so unfair, but I can only imagine how giddy he was, glad you got to experience that crazy card.
I love that you've started this trend now where other content creators like LSV and Nummy are going after #1 as well. It also helps that this format is very fun!
Yeah no shot LSV plays this much if the format was bad
Nummy has been number 1 several times since Arena has instituted the ranking system.
Love this format and that all the TH-camrs are competing for #1!! Makes for exciting videos
Definitely!
Man, you made so many amazing plays. Great W's and what a treat seeing Oculus manifested, so freakin sweet. GGs!
Thanks a ton!
This is what we were waiting for!!! Heavyweight bout!
What a 6th turn on that game - just empty your hand full of good stuff, see what LSV can do about it.
hey Paul. At 1:02:08, was there a reason you took the 5 damage from the worm instead of just blocking and flipping the oculus up to eat the 5/5 worm with a 7/7 statline?
I thought it was a misplay and you forgot about growing dread, but even after flipping you seemed entirely unfaced by it
I’m not going to lie to you. I thought the wurm had death touch this entire time. Good callout.
@@haumph lol, i get you. For some reason I have a hard time remembering that wurm too. It's not even complicated but it feels like it does a lot.
@@haumph I was so confused when you spoke about waltz of rage on the 5/5 I was like "but the occulus would survive am I missing something or what ?" lmao
Damn you really did LSV dirty with that thumbnail 😆
The real win was knocking off LSV one spot in the journey to #1 mythic 😂 well played Paul!
Not a problem!
I love that the RNG gods waited so long into this draft, as though they knew, THEY KNEW, it had to be late in the video.
Living the manifest Abhorrent dream on the first rip! Thank you so I can experience this by proxy hahah. Great work as always Mr. Cheon! I'll be subscribing to your patreon here soon.
Hahaha Paul’s reaction when he hit the Oculus
I wanted to comment yesterday that I'd seen LSV battling in mythic, that it'd only be a matter of time before you two clashed on the ladder and that I was excited for it to happen. I didn't expect it to happen so soon :p
Without spoiling anything, it was a great game to watch, too!
Hopefully you run into each other some more. We need a Cheon-Vargas WWE-style feud. :p
You're so good. Well animated, well explained. Just love it.
Thank you so much!
I think I played against LSV right after you because it was that day and he was #3 with a very similar boros deck. I got the win on 1 life with Central Elevator // Promising Stairs after a very clutch last few turns, I hope he uploads!
Main phase growing dread to hit bookworm was a sick play
Crazy win rate on 17 lands u and Lola are killing it this set!
Need to see a quad battle between Paul, LSV, Kenji and whoever Eken is for the ULTIMATE GALACTIC WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP
Eken is not doing as well as he'd normally do this format though. Lolaman is having a better run.
Paul I’m wishing you luck in the coming arena open!!! Unless I play against you… 😂
Thank you so much!
What a sweet deck again!!
Right?!
It's amazing how easy is to draft, but when I start drafting I just go 0-2 or 2-2 hahahahah, great video btw
Thanks!
LSV showed his hand!
I just finished watching your first match and had to come to the comments section. I'm considering not watching the rest of your matches, because I doubt they can compare to your first Oculus manifest. Entertaining content Mr. Cheon.
Yeah that first game is what dreams are made of.
Match 2 with Shrieker was pretty close.
haha that pack 3, your kingdom for a branchsnapper eh paul
Back to back quadruple signpost drafts? Luckkyyyy
Good stuff, lucky cheons
Cool. Thanks Paul.
You bet!
When titans clash.
I mean, I think Outlaws of Thunder Junction was the best set in ages. Hugely powerful and good themes, grindy swingy games, multicolor, etc.
Game 1, the opponent's Fear of Failed Test seemed to fail the test of stabilizing the board
What a sick deck! And what's better to get a trophy than beating your friend on the way, lol.
Just curious, would you rather get a trophy with this deck but lose to LSV, or beat LSV but falling short of a trophy? I mean, you can get trophy many times, but what's the probability of facing and beating LSV again on a recorded video? :P
Beating LSV >>> all
14:30 Not even giving Cryptid Inspector a thought after just talking about how we're creature light? Is the card that much worse than Windbreaker that we don't even want it as our 9th creature?
It's worse than windbreaker by a large margin yes
@haumph I'm surprised you're so low on it I've had huge success with it in decks that have multiple copy's of growing dread
I thought the same thing. It's definitely not great in the more late-game-oriented UG decks like this one, and a single creature wouldn't have necessarily changed the entire composition of the deck, but it did seem like an odd pick. The Windbreakers were pretty good during the draft though, even allowing him to miss lethal once! 😁
@@Trizjoe win rate very low. One of the worst in ug. High ceiling but low floor
@@haumph yeah I'd pass on it in most cases but it was right at home in this deck & it'd have taken over one of your matches in place of a windbreaker
haha nice! I played against LSV yesterday morning when he was at rank 3 and I was rank 37. He was playing a sick azorius deck though so I wonder if that was before or after the deck he was playing against you 🤔
havnt watched yet, but i hope one of them gives and early good game for tilt equity
lol first thing paul does is give the gg. so happy now.
Am I crazy to consider casting unable to scream on Norin ? I mean, before your opponents did glasswork trapped in the screen, your opponent could just attack with the gremlin and the twins and get value if you block. if both of you had nothing to play, your opponent could still create value with Norin and the board he had at this moment.
Same was literally my first thought there too! People really underrate Norin until they experience it
Yeah I lost to Norin so maybe I should have!
sunrun continues
wait, no playing during the world champs? does that mean youre doing coverage again??
It sure does! Me and Marshall are back!
@@haumph that's great news! 👏🏻
@@haumph OH YEAAAAAAA its gonna be a good world champs, things feel right again.
... this time, its personal,..
Being bezg88 I was not entertained by your insane curve in g1 lol
Cursed windbreaker over cryptid inspector in pack 3?
Yes
@@haumph I also questioned that. Seconds before you were talking about the lack of creatures. Both are 3 drops and the inspector has been good for me but it feels like streamers hate it. I disagree and feel like not knowing why its bad is why I'm Diamond and you're mythic...
My gut was also inspector there, with all those growing dread it would be a nice card to manifest
One does not simply walk into rank 2
2/3 over second windbreak u may have over looked. Great draft
Best video ever
hey paul do u think its possible to get 60fps videos?
Hey paul, did you know that the manifest beast can flip up any permanent, not just creatures. Just something to keep in mind, not sure it would have mattered.
Good callout!
1:11:30 I'd pick the Bookworm because you could turn it face up during LSV's next turn.
The 0/4 doesn't tap for two different colors of mana.
@1:0158 Obviously we probably should have flipped the eye in our own turn but once we've made that mistake, is there a reason we don't ambush their wurm in combat? We'd be a 7/7 and they're tapped out. Is there a single mana post-combat effect we're playing around?
Windbreaker over cryptid inspector???
Just a casual 5 percent difference in win rate. I also wanted to live the dream with my 1gg 3/3 and give it wings
The game vs LSV brought back memories of the Team Draft Super League 😢
Game one was a smackdown, a god draw. Not fun being OP, which is somewhat of a feature with modern sets.
No way.
played him the other day he was too cool to say hello back
Probably wasn't paying attention.
Manifest deck with no creatures seems so bad. Would have definitely taken some cryptic inspectors and malevolent chandelier
Yeah I really wish my deck performed better in this set.
The lack of creatures def made this deck extremely scary to watch. I kept wincing each time one of your key creatures got removed knowing full well you didn't have much else.
Still got there!
I thought you would’ve flipped that oculus in game 1 right after you manifested it. Because the Zealout adds two mana to flip a card.
Cant help but be a little jealous of your deck , open great mythic into uncommon mythic into wide open lane perfect for both first 2 picks into 2 more insane rare /mythic opens pack 2 and pack 3... this is not how my drafts go lmao
The perfect storm
No consideration for Cryptid Inspector Pack 1 Pick 3? I find that card does work in Simic decks
Is there a link to LSV if he was recording his perspective of the game?
I think he was just playing for fun
Why not taking inspector over the second windbreaker?
Paul, be honnest with us and with yourself : what do you enjoy most, winning an Arena Open, or winning against LSV ?
Arena open
Wouldn't it have made sense to get your deck to 42-43 cards? With so much manifest dread I would've considered it I think
Lower chance to draw bombs. I don’t think it’s crazy though
I think Cryptid over 2nd Cursed Windbreaker would have been better even though its usually a worse card. You had at the time 3x Growing Dreads so upping creature count seems really important
I actually think defiled crypt might be better in GB than WB, what with say its name and under the skin and cathartic parting, etc
Why where you afraid of waltz of rage at 1:06:25? 😅
It would kill almost all your creatures, but opponent wouldn't draw any cards off it and it would leave your oculus in play
14:30 I'm surprised you took the second windbreaker over the Cryptid Inspector. You were just talking about lacking creatures and payoffs for all your manifest.
P3P7 When you already have 3x growing dread and a lack of real creature to exploit the trigger you insta picked the second Cursed windbreaker over a Cryptid inspector; while i do agree in a vacuum the equip is better don't you think you could have used one more creature (and incidentally a second manifest payoff)?
where are you checking the win rate of individual cards during draft?
17lands.com
57:39 why not surveil with room before you play Growing Dread so you could see if any usefull creature comming??
I prefer to surveil to make sure I draw a good action spell on the following turn.
At 1:02:06 there's literally no reason not to block with your Oculus and flip it?? Did you just forget that you'd get 2 counters turning it into a 7/7? They're tapped out and you just get to eat the Wurm for free.
I thought it had deathtouch for some reason. Big mistake on my part but now I know! good callout
How is the Shrieker not the slam dunk pick for Pack 1? It is a "remove now or lose the game" threat at 3 mana. What more do you want out of a card?!
I know an opponent can simply remove it 1-for-1, but it's not like you're spending 5 or 6 mana on it. (And there are some good ways to protect it in this set.)
I was pretty dead set on taking the card but my job is to also explain my picks and discuss other options. The Mirth is an absolute powerhouse in Rakdos, which is one of the stronger color combinations in the set. Ultimately I went with the Shrieker so stop yelling at me!
@@haumph Haha. Sorry, Paul! I meant that to be more playful than mad. Your draft content is the best and I am super excited that you're going to be on LR!
Do you plan on playing paper events Paul?
I do not. My paper Competitive play days are largely behind me.
@@haumphyeah but like, are coming to fnm or nah?
Heard that. I've seen you play before, and was hoping to see one last run.
you get passed better stuff in mythic than i do in gold... =(
Its all the same and balances out. I opened really well in this draft though
How do you have so much gold and gems??
I win a lot
Grow that dread bro.
It is a fun set to draft, but UW/BU are a little too strong, IMO. But, yes, miles better than MHIII to draft.
I feel like this format already in a few videos you've burned yourself by manually tapping!
I've also burned myself by autotapping as well!
@@haumph yeah, but that's not unusual for anyone playing on arena!
I don't understand this format. Every draft I go 0-3.
How is this guy ranked top 50 wtf
Rank 3 now. Get good
@@haumph with misplays like that? i'm pretty sure you made a misplay in every single game. but sure, get good.
(L)
that fucking boros deck, wow
this format is so much fun, even though it's sometimes like idiots running around with h-bombs but it has some rewarding and cool gameplay
