Hey Paul, I was your last round opponent. I did indeed board the Fear of Lost Teeth in, good read! You just rolled into a terrible matchup on the draw. Great playing you, ggs!
Ggs!
I have to say this is such a refreshing interaction. Never any salt or disrespectful talk from Paul towards his opponents even with tilting luck. You guys both are an excellent example for how we should handle wins & losses.
“Week one of the format I would have slammed the cheerleader” -Paul Cheon 2024
Nice
Context is everything
"I really need an erection" Paul Cheon 2024
I immediately went to the comments when he said this. Well done
Reminds me of another quote earlier when he was just downgrading his assessment of the card: "I've gone down on the cheerleader significantly."
To think we live in a world where The Wandering Rescuer isn't a pack 1 pick 1.
she would be the better pick imo
I think he also should have picked up a baseball bat. It helps RW decks reach for the last bit of damage.
It's Def going to cut white from your left in pack 2
@@NUMSKUL_TXso would scavenger
@@DiscardatRandom probably less so since scavenger is for the enchantments deck and a more narrow build around. And rares have that X factor of gravity for people wanting to play them.
Enjoy watching your drafts because you are very focused and efficient. I tend to draft durdly greedy multicolor piles (to varying success), so it’s always nice to see these synergistic two color decks built to win w/ very little fluff
Glad you like them!
I would love to see a video about the draft review! I’ve been watching ever video of yours for a while now and was really rooting for you here! Good run!
No one expects the second swarmweaver
My condolences on a frustrating loss. Thanks for demonstrating that signature even keel.
thanks for sharing this! it’s a great learning experience for everyone who didn’t make day 2
Dear Mr. Cheon, I was really impressed by your composure in the last round. It looked very bleak, but you recognized the what can you do. Win or learn friend, win or learn.
first game is so burtal. Reminds me of the old days travelling a far distane to play a tournament just to get land screwed and drop out 0-2 after 1 hour being there :D
Literally every GP i ever went to.
I also have at most medium success with Boros and stopped drafting it. You are even more my hero!
Good stuff, Paul! Thanks for all the limited content!
My pleasure!
Solid run Paul all things considered. I really do not like Boros that much, you're winning mostly games where opponent does not have an early kill spell, is mana screwed or flooded, or just does not have efficient early plays (nothing new here I guess ^^). If they do and have a decent mid game you're done. Also feel midnight mayhem is almost paramount to a good Boros deck in this format. But you played the line and games really well, clearly that's what the draft gave you, and for me if we forget a blue white distant mishap that we will let fly away, you have been very much as clutch as you can be on these day 2 and overall these Arena Opens. Thanks and GL for future drafts and sustaining your high ranking 🙏
my condolences, my day 2 ended with rollercoaster, boilerbilges overlord and a few fobas in a defensive red green deck, sometimes you cant win. And I had a super good blue white deck with 4 rares and 12 uncommons :D:D
This is so heart-breaking to watch. I know UW and RW are the best archetypes right now, but I can’t seem to find success with them. Better luck on the next Arena Open. I lucked out on Draft1, but playing Boros on Draft2 didn’t pan out for me. I should’ve stayed w/ G/x multi-color I’m so used to drafting.
You re the best draft player i ever seen, love from México ❤️
My condolences Paul, I also went red/white and got eliminated day 2 draft 1. I honestly haven’t had success with the Boros in all my practicing of the format but unfortunately it was my only option with the cards dealt to me. I wish you luck next time! Thank you for all the content, I’m a huge fan and will continue to support you!
Thanks! Yes Boros is one of my worst archetypes despite it being a successful color pairing on 17 lands.
@haumph can you briefly explain why?
Also did boros, won two and then the shuffler got me with 8 mulligans in two games.
Match 2 Game 1: Sometimes we don't get to play magic :')
Your p1p1 was a gut punch man, I understand the reasoning but it hurt me physically to see you pass it
Yeah, I dont disagree that the scavenger is one of the best uncommons in the set, maybe the best. I dont know how you could compare it to the rescuer. Its a huge theat you can usually play for like 3 mana. It can protect your creatures, and usually just eats one of their attacking creatures. I'm struggling to understand the logic there
@@eddiot03yeah this guy isn't very good at magic lol don't even know why I keep clicking on his videos anymore
@@1st_editioni dont think he's a bad player, I've generally seen him make good decisions, and have good explanations, just this time I can't get behind. I've played the wanderer and played against it and it is just nuts
@@1st_editionrank 1 mythic bad at magic lol
Hes gotta be baiting right?@mopanda81
I think youre undervaluing Infernal Phantom. We have so many enchantments that it easily attacks as a 4/3 or 6/3 which is a 2-for-1 and seals out games where the opponent is low.
Card is a limited sleeper. A lot of ways to make this card nuts.
GG's Paul, I wish you had at least one Slumber, the card is also great in aggro, it's a two drop when they attack and they will attack.
You played great my friend we will get them next open!! It’s great how you talk through your thought process great channel. I went 4 -3 twice in open day 1 😂
I appreciate that!
43:44 - I think that not attacking was correct. If you do attack and they block, you would use the trick. While trading 1 mana trick for a creature seems good, then that trick was your win condition, because giving flying was a promising route to victory.
Game 1 draws were unreal, like what even are the odds of that...
awesome games thank you paul.
No problem 👍
Awesome draft! I think I would have taken the friendly ghost over the 2nd ticket booth in pack 3. I've really liked the friendly ghost in RW. Pushes through a big attack the turn you play it and then chips in for 2 in the air to close out the game.
I think attack in the box also better than second ticket booth. With two of the make unblockable 2/2 it’s quite good. And ticket booth doesn’t have any synergy. Double strike pretty bad with a bunch of 2 power.
I recently drafted a deck with 4 broodspinners and 2 swarmweavers. Really easy to win that way!
Haha so true
Haha, just finished watching yesterday's video. Perfect timing 👌
Perfect!
I got wrecked by the Ride during my draft too, Paul. Fun times 🙄
You say to the last opponent "they deserve to get into the next draft". But actually they don't. They did absolutely nothing to deserve that. Just got blessed by RNJesus witn insane amount of luck, getting passed bombs after bombs after bombs. May be they were the only player on the table dratfting golgari.
That's why I hate Magic. It's just a random casino slot machine. That guy got a jackpot
Last OP was playin a damn constructed deck in limited 😭
Hey Paul, as always thanks for the content.
You have a nice attitude and it's really enjoyable.
Regarding your draft it seems you commited to early to White.
Probably could have been GR(b?)
My experience with Boros so far is that if I don't have multiple rares/premium uncommons or can go wide with mayhem etc., it doesn't have the staying power for the power level of this format.
The deck without bombs or going wide is just too easily defended with 1for1 trades.
I'm actually also not thaaaaaat big of a fan of Arabella...
Sure.. sometimes you have the draws where you can make it unblockable and it feels unbeatable.
But there are also games where it can only attack one time, drain and die afterwards.
At least for me, it's not a card to jump into Boros immediately.
The wanderer continues wandering for another day
She can wander into my deck any day. Plus lets take a moment to consider getting her second pick over an uncommon lol. Dude must have shit a brick.
if anything, I love watching these arena open drafts because the actual draft format portion is generally much higher end. Here, we see the packs really drying up after p5-6 instead of getting crazy stuff way too late like p9 percussionists, pack 1 signposts etc. Would love to see arena have a way to have ELO drafts, at least seperate maybe plat, or diamond and higher from the rest?
Bottom a Land? I'm screwed.
Bottom a non-Land? I flood.
Arena has no mouth and it must scream.
shuffler is fine. no clumping
Even if you think scavenger is better, by passing wanderer you basically guarantee that the person to your left will play white... I feel that the same is not true for passing scavenger due to rarity
People will take scavenger as well. Also I don’t care what I pass.
Also this is Day 2. You can safely assume all the drafters around the table don't care about rarity and understand the value and power level of the cards.
@@JakeGeeksOutI mean it’s not about rarity, it’s about what’s the best card and having a bomb rare like the wander would help close games and protect cards with hexproof
@@Tuturial464 responding to the OP comment on rarity. Anyway, I think P1P1 scavenger is correct still due to power and flexibility. But if midpack Paul knew he was Boros, Wanderer is better. At P1P1, there are simply too many likely future game situations and deck configurations where the Scavenger is just better especially at just a 1-drop.
@@JakeGeeksOutI still would have taken the wander and pivot if white is out. But what irks me is how the wander is just too good
Aww man, GGs. You played well. Going back tonreview the draft asnwell. See what i wouldve picked
Paul: "...and I'm not to close to the best players..."
You know, unless you look at Arena ranking, win percentage, career achievements, excitement for the game, manners...
An offering for the almighty algorithm.
There will be a next arena open on the same set? Or it will be in the next set?
LET'S GO!!!
Wild that we're in a format where P1P1 is a 1 mana uncommon over a mythic rare flash, convoke, hexproof doublestriker.
Statistically supported decision btw. Optimistic Scavenger tracks at a higher win % than The Wandering Rescuer.
I always see a lot if eye rolls at reanimation but its a strong archetype in duskmoutn if built well if you can get the triangle right
It just takes a lot more to put together. It can definitely be a good deck but you can low roll often and end up with a pretty bad deck.
Those land draws are the sole reason I have claim the MTG Arena is rigged, isn't MTG and will never be MTG. I got hosed over and over this morning drew 5 lands in a row multiple times, and even when I had one land left in my deck with 20 cards in library, still drew it. BS, rolling over and accepting it is part of the problem. Now that the rant is over, I really appreciate your content, always brightens my day when you got a new draft up! Cheers!
You ever played draft in person? Same theory
i think the only big absent in this deck was some scorching dragonfire
Trapped in the screen could have at least have given him spot on removal. And a nice bomb rare.
So sad not making draft 2! The last opponents deck was so crazy that was the most dreamy deck ive seen in the open so far!
10:08 - You need *WHAT* ?!
LOL
Omg the day 2 draft, and I'm first
Absolutely understand the P1P1 there. Wanderer was double white. And Scavenger was a better pick in the sense that it had the most power and flexibility. A deck can certainly overload itself with good low drops, but picking a 5 drop (yes I know it has convoke), is a bit more rough.
Context is definitely important here. I have no doubt that if Wanderer was passed pick 5 and Paul already knew he was Boros. He would slam dunk that over Scavenger.
GG
There was a small blue splash and a more mid range boros deck but what do i kknow hehe
Tempting me to sign up for Patreon to see Daddy Haumph tilt off
You should
Gotta ask- why do you and LSV value to monkey so high? In red black I understand. In any other pair of colors its just ok at best.
You just passed the wanderer. Personally I would have taken it, especially for a Boros deck
I think the scavenger is just a better card full stop.
@@haumphyou also send the next player a bomb and signaled them white is probably going to be open
@@Tuturial464 It''d be even worse if he took it and let the other cheap drop go.
@@alp2ccc138yeah but there were other cheap drops.
@@Tuturial464 Yeah but it's a double white card, it's not on par with a Ghostly , and both cards sends signals.
Draft 1 went 4-0 with no rare gruul deck splashing 3 midnight mayhems
Draft 2 cashed in 500$ with gruul coz why not 😂
I will slam optimistic scavenger p1 over almost anything except the real bombs (overlords etc.). Have trophied both times I've played green white now purely on the strength of the white uncommons. Definitely better than the wanderer, which is just pretty good in my opinion.
I hate RW in this format, always get that helpless feeling you had throughout. 17lands data is not representative of top level play. I managed to get to $2K without putting a white card in my deck. Both my decks (BGU and RU) had great defensive speed. Was hoping to see RW but instead faced in sequence UW, BG, BW, UR, GW, BGW, BUW, BU, BR. Awesome format with all the variety.
Master says streamers should never play Boros
You are better than me at this even though I 7-0 qualified =). That said- wumperer is a better pick than op scavenger and windbreaker is a better pick than percussionist by a lot. I will admit that the aggro deck in this format is powerful, but wtf.
You don’t sound like you believe that I’m better than you.
@@haumph You are.
"That's cheerleader versus a playmate ... hmmm". Tough choice, I admit. :)))
I think boros is better in bo1
With all the rooms that you keep opening, I have no idea why you weren't playing that soul rager. You would have had a 44 in almost all of your games had you just drawn it. Otherwise, great stuff is always.
10:08
Rigged. All lands
No way did you just say Murder isn’t even that good.
I did
Black is considered the weakest color in this set, especially with only two good commons and considered a support color
@@Tuturial464 Okay. Fair. In a vacuum I never consider Murder to be bad is what I meant to say.
@@WemfsI know, I’m just stating black isn’t a good color to play in this set,
Went 2:2 after 2:0 happens
I actually don't hate splashing baseball bat in a red white agro shell.
And how are you going to get it without a terramorphic expanse and adding a forest is slowing it down
I think that's a bad idea.
Typically by picking up a few dual color lands. The green white lands don't get up until the end. The format is slow enough that I think its worth it, and the cost of it is minimal during a whole game. Also helps that the few times I have had it I've gotten passed late green white rare land which is just a plains with benefits. That makes it an easy choice.
@Tuturial464 you also seem be forgetting the common lands can come in untapped and with an agro deck it's fairly easy to hit the threshold by turn 3-4
@@JohnGarner-d7iand you would slow down the deck. Boros is aggro and having too many tapped lands won’t help, plus you would miss the red white cards
I feel boros needs to be so good to win a draft. and ur draft was a pile , besides 2 arabelas was quite mediocre
Yeah not entirely sure what I was supposed to be. I rewatched the draft and I guess ur was an option but tough spot regardless. We still had some good close games minus the block constructed deck I played in the last round.
@@haumph I think BR might've also been an option considering that black tends to be underdrafted in this set. It's easy for me to say that after seeing what wheeled in pack 3, but I think there was a line as soon as pack 1 for someone who prefers to avoid WR : Ticket Booth p1p5 to get deeper into red; speculative Let's Play a Game or BR land p1p6; Innocuous Rat p1p7; Conductive Machete p1p8; and some filler black cards on the wheel.
Not sure if the deck would've ended up being better though. Besides, you had no real reason to pivot off of WR in pack 1, and the two Arabellas early pack 2 pretty much sealed the deal.
Anyways, love the videos! They are both fun and highly informative. I just won my first 2000 $ in the Open this weekend thanks to you and all the other great limited content creators out there. :)
@David-k4d8b he's missed out on premium removal and bomb rares.
