Mike I started reading Dune a couple of days ago and really love the writing style!So far I'm hooked to see what's happening and loving the journey, this is my first Sci Fi book I've read really, as I mainly stick to Fantasy & Horror, so glad I picked it up now before the movie is out.
Dune is the greatest sci fi novel of all time and my third favorite book of all time, number one being LOTR and number two Watership Down. It's a great time to be a Dune fan! I planned on it when i heard they were making a movie of it. Then I just put it off because I started reading other books. I still wanna read before the movie, maybe you’ll give me that push

Just finished Dune yesterday. Holy hell did I love it. To me it didn't really have the feeling of reading a story, it felt like reading a dramatisation of major historical events in our future. It had a scope and depth rarely seen (and felt) with fantastic characters and it was incredibly thought provoking. Totally a 5 star book.
I once had a mild panic attack quite unexpectedly while driving on a long trip. I recited the litany against fear out loud and I swear that's how I got through it. And this was years after reading Dune, it just came to me.

I just finished Children of Dune and I'm in the same boat my entire world view has changed as well. Its a beautiful book, with an incredible message. Highly recommend this read as well.
I personally don’t believe that since having power also means you have a responsibility and if someone isolated themself, they would lose it because isolated creates indifference and most people got power by understanding human emotions and yes some manipulated human emotions but they still have to understand.
@@Sleeping-Bill Being around politicians and CEO types most of my career. the author is correct. WHen you have massive amounts of power, you end up surrounding yourself with people to wield your power since you can't do it all. You may have one person handling one department, while someone else does another department. It's a case of how far removed you are from the people you impact. That's why you see this disconnect from a CEO vs a consumer or a politicians from the general public. You can trace it back to how many people are in between the public and the person in charge. At the top, they are quite isolated.
I read all the Dune books about 12 years ago. After struggling with the start of the first book, but persisting, it quickly became my favourite book ever. The scope is incredible.
yes. My first read of "Dune" was in '74 and i told friends "the first 100 pages are kinda hard to get through." Years later I re-read it and that dinner scene simply astounded me: tense, insightful, just brilliant writing. Like Mike said, each time i've read it, a new aspect becomes apparent to me. I'm starting it again....
I SO totally agree with you about the dinner scene. It's one of Herbert's most brilliant moments IMO. I read Dune when I was 12 or 13, and I remember being mesmerized by it. The way he wove all the individual motivations of his characters together so easily, and it's where the unusual ominiscient, head-hopping POV pays off. I still say that if you can write a really good dinner scene and make it interesting, you can write anything.
I read Dune like a year ago and I really liked it, the interesting thing is that the more time passes the more the story grows in my mind. I just find myself remembering the story and the philosophycal and ecological stuff and it gets better all the time, i want to reread it soon. Ps: I've got Dune Messiah next to my bed for months but i've only read the prologue, I'm afraid that it isn't as good but I trust you, Mike. I send my reguards from Colombia.
I'll chime in here. So first book builds Paul as a Messiah, although his last actions should (if you think about it) raise your hackles quite a lot. Second tears him down as a Messiah. And the Children of Dune concludes his story. You should NOT read Messiah without reading Children of Dune because that's unsatisfying as hell.
I read Dune when I was 16, for Reading class (Do they even have that anymore?) Literature class was my favorite class when in high school. We all LOVED this book and talked about it for months. (This was in 1982) When that first movie came out me and my best friends all went to see it and laughed our butts off through the whole thing. It was so stupid and NOT the Dune we knew, I am hoping this new movie gives the book the credit it is due. It will be so worth it. READ THIS. Awesome book for any age.
The trailer makes it very obvious it's not the Dune you want it to be, unless you had visions of tacticool nonsense back in 1982. This is sanitized Dune for a universal audience that loves Game of Thrones and Call of Duty.

It’s funny how you mention how age affects it. I first tried to read this book as a junior in high school and I couldn’t get past the second chapter. I’m very much an action person and fantasy books are a struggle for me. But starting it a couple days ago and getting about a quarter of the way through the book, it’s already changed my outlook on life. The first chapter alone and the “fear is mind killer” speech is already permanently in my head. As a high schooler I was just confused, but now I’m in college and it’s like a whole new book. Realistically, it’s only been a couple years since my first attempt but now that I’m around the same age as Paul, I suddenly feel like I understand him a lot better.
Yeah, this one was strange for me. I'm 12 and staying up into the AM hours reading, knocking off WoT and Stormlight books every two or so days. And they're massive, thousand pages books with more than ten volumes in the series. I understood everything fine and thoroughly enjoy things like this. But I tried Dune, and the first chapter was okay, but then the second was just crap, in my opinion. I don't really know whether to continue or not....

I’m someone who has read Dune and loved it, but I haven’t read the rest of the series (yet). I love the LOTR and Dune comparison in terms of impact on the genre - well said!
This is my favourite book of all times. I started re-reading so I have everything fresh when the movie comes out. It literally changed my life when I first read it.
I remember reading Dune for the first time when I was 17; it was when I was visiting my dad during the Christmas holidays of 2009 and I had just watched the David Lynch movie. I thought it was really campy but I wanted to read the book it was based on. So I went to the local library and lucky me, all six books were there, from Dune to Chapterhouse: Dune. I borrowed them all, locked myself in my room and just binged right through them, though I had to stop after reading Heretics of Dune, as I had completely burned myself out and the holidays were just about over. But it's such a great series; it pulled me in and didn't let me go. And just like you, I'm always picking up something new every time I reread them. Believe it or not, but God-Emperor of Dune is my favorite out of the whole series; to me, that's when everything comes together. I generally see the first three books as being one story, the first building Paul up as the Messiah, the second tearing him down, and the third concluding his story while beginning Leto II's story. To me, the last two books that seem rather superfluous. even though they're still a good read. Anyway, this was a great video and I'm super-excited for the upcoming movie.
I still maintain that God Emperor of Dune is the best single book out of the series. However, the Dune through Children of Dune arc is the best overall single story - and if you only read the first book you're seriously missing out: the later books totally change the meaning and import of the first. They really draw out the themed amazingly
Hi Mike. I'm a new subscriber to your channel, but a looooooooooong time fan of everything Dune (with the notable exception of the David Lynch film). I'm so thrilled with your video on this amazing work. I will confess that I came to this book series as a result of the Sci-Fi mini-series, so I found the density of Herbert's writing to be very daunting to 12 year old me. But since then I have read and re-read the Herbertian novels, as well as the entire expanse of pre-quel novels written by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson. Can't get enough, and would love to see more about this extended universe. I always enjoy discussions/content where people point out the impact Dune has had on broader Science Fiction.

Great video! I read this book when I was 23 after studying Arabic in undergrad. There's a lot of Mideastern cultural influence in the names of things and the cultures Frank Herbert crafted. The book was incredible. I binged it in a week, which is fast for me. It's stuck with me to this day (I'm in my thirties now) and I really need to reread it before the film comes out. I agree with your take on it. The book's influence cannot be overstated. It's some of the best quality science fiction ever and, I would say, the best science fiction book of all time. I also read this in high school, got partway through and dropkicked it and I have never even CONSIDERED picking it up again, even as the book club I'm in are all saying they're planning on reading it before the movie. But after watching this video and hearing about political movements and chapter-long dinner parties where it's just machinations, I'm actually seriously thinking about picking this book up. Due to your videos, I went out and blindly bought all six of the original Dune Chronicles. My God, man... What have you exposed me to? Easily up there with The Dark Tower and The Vampire Chronicles as my favorite fantasy series yet. I love your work and your tastes. I read Dune when I was 17. I loved it. I'm now 68. I haven't reread it because I was afraid my older, more cynical self wouldn't appreciate it like I did at 17. After seeing the movie and watching your review, it's now time for a re-read. Thanks for that.
I too read Dune the first time at around 15, more so to plug gaps and answer questions I had after watching Lynch's Dune. It was fun and immersive, but its real impact was when I revisited it at 18, and it truly blew my mind. I absorbed the next 5 books in quick succession. I had another Dune renaissance in university, when I returned to the first book (again!), when I was 20. More new insight, especially the part about never trusting leaders (which timed very well with my university years). Found myself re-reading it every year, for the next 5 years, always taking from it something new. Dune is truly among the greatest books I've ever experienced, and I'm all the more enriched and enhanced by it, not unlike ingesting the spice melange (LOL). For first timers reading it, I envy you. Hope you will enjoy and benefit from it like I did. And, hello from Malaysia. Ya Hya Chouhada.
Kudos for the video, man! I really appreciate you opening up at the end. I read this book around this time of year a couple of years ago. I was so impressed, I couldn't stop talking about it to my friends. It is so laden with themes, atmosphere and language, it's just unbelievable. I'm definitely in for a reread and for the sequels as well, and will most probably be occasionally coming back to it till my last days.
These are my favorite videos from you.... I don't actually care if the books have mass appeal, I actually think these videos give me a good idea if I should read or pass on a book. I bought Dune today! I loved the 1st movie. But I won’t start the book until I see part 2 😂 I have a theory that has never let me down: see the screen media first, then read. Because the book is always better…so I don’t get as mad at an adaptation if I see it visually first. Then I can genuinely enjoy both 😂
I finally picked this up. I haven't read it since my 20's and I'm forgot a lot of the story. Iam a quarter of the way through it and it's bring back so many memories. Im glad you finally did this video.
Great video! I like to look at the sequels almost as their own stand alone stories. I read ‘Hunters’ and ‘Sandworms’ and didn’t think they were horrible, but I just didn’t care. I so wish Frank lived to write book 7 😞
You got me convinced now! Dune has been on my shelf forever, but back in high school and college I could never get past the first page, it just wasn’t the right time for me. Now that I’m so much more into sci-fi fantasy I can’t wait to try it out.

i'm 30, started reading a couple years ago but was so hard to get thru it. I even bought the new book version but still couldnt get into it. But after seeing the incredible movie, i am motivated finally.
This is the best non-spoiler "Dune" review that I've either read online or seen on TH-cam, and I've read and seen a bunch of them. In fact, this is one of the very best non-spoiler reviews that I've ever seen for any sci-fi novel ever. Mike is the first reviewer that I've seen who didn't just trot out all of the old talking points that always get mentioned regarding why this book has had such an enormous amount of influence on subsequent novels. To me, whenever I've seen other reviewers do it, it's like listening to someone read whatever's been posted about "Blood on the Tracks" on the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame website, or whatever's posted on the American Film Institute Top 100 Films website about "Casablanca." Other reviewers just seem like they're going through the motions and saying, "well, it has all of this influence, so we're obligated to genuflect in front of it." Mike's the first reviewer that I've seen to sit down and to spell out what it means to him personally - which is why this is such a great review. Best of all, he points out that the entire notion of being obligated to genuflect in front of anything is antithetical to whole point of the novel, which is making me really want to sit down and read it for the first time. Whenever I hear other TH-camr's that I like mention "Dune," I've always groaned out loud and wanted to fast-forward in the video to the next book they discuss, but I'll never do that again. I've now subbed to Mike's channel, and am looking forward to hearing more of what he has to say.

Just recently picked up Dune and placed it on my stack of TBR. I read on your Goodreads review that modern readers may not like this book. I fall under that category of a modern reader due to my love of Crichton novels. When i read i take notes on the book. I know I’m going to need a notebook just for Dune, also This copy contains a glossary of terms which i know will help. Many concepts depend on where that person is in life, from an philosophical standpoint. But I think I have been there for a while now. So now I'm ready to give this book a chance. Right after finishing Jurassic Park :)
Two things have convinced me to get a copy and try Dune - your enthusiasm and love for it and the new trailer. I watched the '84 movie when I was in my teens as my Dad was a fan of the books and the film but I was so utterly confused and lost I thought if the book was anything like that I wasn't going to bother. So I've ordered a copy (while watching this video in fact) and will give it a go after all these years!

Okay, I'm currently 23 as of writing this, I read the book after I saw Denis Villeneuve's Part One (currently my favourite film of all time) and not only did I read it and not want to stop, but I fell in love with it. I can see how some may not enjoy it, but I ate it up. And I plan to read the rest of the books after watching Part Two. And I can comfortably call it one of my favourite books of all time, up there with the likes of Crichton's Jurassic Park. My personal favourite scenes/sequences from the book are the banquet, Feyd Rautha's gladiatorial game and the final assault on Arrakeen. What a brilliant book.
I'm finishing up Heretic's of Dune ATM. When I'm finished Chapterhouse I'll be going back and do it all again. This is the first book series that has actually changed my way of thinking in everyday life. I was unsure whether it would go downhill after God Emperor, but Heretics is off the chain! So gutted Herbert didn't get to finish the last book! Couldn't remember when you said you last did a re read of the last 2 books but I see more in common between the original and Heretics than any other. You should give it another shot!

Mike - I am 60% of the way through the book now and can totally see how, as a young man, the lessons of the book especially regarding the response to fear, would have a profound and lasting impact. I would say I experienced something similar when reading Jane Eyre at the age of 11, and she stands up and declares that no matter their age, gender, class, wealth, strength, or position in life - they are equal in the eyes of god (I know many younger readers and Booktubers who hate the book and fail to see how ground breaking that was at the time it was published). I have also been struck by certain similarities with ASOIAF...especially Frank Herbert's willingness to bump off characters (it's that GRRM vibe that no one is safe). Thanks for the heads up about the sequels- I had been wondering if I needed to read them or whether the first book can be read as a stand alone, so that was helpful.
New reader here. I was excited for Denis Villenueve's new project called Dune, I had no idea what it was, but I love the director's work. It didn't take too much research to find out what the book was and what I was missing out on. I procrastinated a bit, but while at the bookstore, there it was, and I bought it. And just wow, what an absolute amazing read. I really loved it and plan to continue the series (and stop at Frank's final book. I don't have any interest in reading the other books that his son and the other guy wrote). And I have faith that Denis Villenueve will do the book justice!
Nice video. A neat part in the history of Dune was that even though it had been published as serials in Analog pulp magazine, no publisher wanted to release it as a novel. Only Chilton was willing to give it a chance. Yes, the publisher of car/truck repair manuals was the first publisher of the Dune novel.
It's also long been my favorite book. Also read it quite young, inspired by the Lynch film release. Loved it (though at least half of it went over my head). Have revisited it time and again over the years, and am now listening to the audiobook version with my oldest son (15), who's very intrigued by the trailer. Hoping this will finally lead to Dune being widely recognized by the public at large for the sci-fi masterpiece it is...

Really enjoyed this video as it mirrored a lot of similar thoughts I have with Dune I read the first as a teenager and found it difficult Then on my first tour of Afghanistan it was the best way to enjoy the stories about conflicts, both political and social

You may have one person handling one department, while someone else does another department. It's a case of how far removed you are from the people you impact. That's why you see this disconnect from a CEO vs a consumer or a politicians from the general public. You can trace it back to how many people are in between the public and the person in charge. At the top, they are quite isolated.

yes. My first read of "Dune" was in '74 and i told friends "the first 100 pages are kinda hard to get through."
Years later I re-read it and that dinner scene simply astounded me: tense, insightful, just brilliant writing.
Like Mike said, each time i've read it, a new aspect becomes apparent to me. I'm starting it again....
I SO totally agree with you about the dinner scene. It's one of Herbert's most brilliant moments IMO. I read Dune when I was 12 or 13, and I remember being mesmerized by it. The way he wove all the individual motivations of his characters together so easily, and it's where the unusual ominiscient, head-hopping POV pays off. I still say that if you can write a really good dinner scene and make it interesting, you can write anything.
I've read Dune 28 times. (Starting as a teenager and going up to last year.) I find something new every time.
I read Dune like a year ago and I really liked it, the interesting thing is that the more time passes the more the story grows in my mind. I just find myself remembering the story and the philosophycal and ecological stuff and it gets better all the time, i want to reread it soon. Ps: I've got Dune Messiah next to my bed for months but i've only read the prologue, I'm afraid that it isn't as good but I trust you, Mike. I send my reguards from Colombia.

I'll chime in here. So first book builds Paul as a Messiah, although his last actions should (if you think about it) raise your hackles quite a lot. Second tears him down as a Messiah. And the Children of Dune concludes his story. You should NOT read Messiah without reading Children of Dune because that's unsatisfying as hell.
I read Dune when I was 16, for Reading class (Do they even have that anymore?) Literature class was my favorite class when in high school. We all LOVED this book and talked about it for months. (This was in 1982) When that first movie came out me and my best friends all went to see it and laughed our butts off through the whole thing. It was so stupid and NOT the Dune we knew, I am hoping this new movie gives the book the credit it is due. It will be so worth it. READ THIS. Awesome book for any age.

The trailer makes it very obvious it's not the Dune you want it to be, unless you had visions of tacticool nonsense back in 1982. This is sanitized Dune for a universal audience that loves Game of Thrones and Call of Duty.

It’s funny how you mention how age affects it. I first tried to read this book as a junior in high school and I couldn’t get past the second chapter. I’m very much an action person and fantasy books are a struggle for me. But starting it a couple days ago and getting about a quarter of the way through the book, it’s already changed my outlook on life. The first chapter alone and the “fear is mind killer” speech is already permanently in my head. As a high schooler I was just confused, but now I’m in college and it’s like a whole new book. Realistically, it’s only been a couple years since my first attempt but now that I’m around the same age as Paul, I suddenly feel like I understand him a lot better.
Yeah, this one was strange for me. I'm 12 and staying up into the AM hours reading, knocking off WoT and Stormlight books every two or so days. And they're massive, thousand pages books with more than ten volumes in the series. I understood everything fine and thoroughly enjoy things like this. But I tried Dune, and the first chapter was okay, but then the second was just crap, in my opinion. I don't really know whether to continue or not....

This is my favourite book of all times. I started re-reading so I have everything fresh when the movie comes out. It literally changed my life when I first read it.
I remember reading Dune for the first time when I was 17; it was when I was visiting my dad during the Christmas holidays of 2009 and I had just watched the David Lynch movie. I thought it was really campy but I wanted to read the book it was based on. So I went to the local library and lucky me, all six books were there, from Dune to Chapterhouse: Dune. I borrowed them all, locked myself in my room and just binged right through them, though I had to stop after reading Heretics of Dune, as I had completely burned myself out and the holidays were just about over.
But it's such a great series; it pulled me in and didn't let me go. And just like you, I'm always picking up something new every time I reread them. Believe it or not, but God-Emperor of Dune is my favorite out of the whole series; to me, that's when everything comes together. I generally see the first three books as being one story, the first building Paul up as the Messiah, the second tearing him down, and the third concluding his story while beginning Leto II's story. To me, the last two books that seem rather superfluous. even though they're still a good read.
Anyway, this was a great video and I'm super-excited for the upcoming movie.
God Emperor was my least favorite on my first read. But it’s my favorite now. So good!
I still maintain that God Emperor of Dune is the best single book out of the series. However, the Dune through Children of Dune arc is the best overall single story - and if you only read the first book you're seriously missing out: the later books totally change the meaning and import of the first. They really draw out the themed amazingly
Hi Mike. I'm a new subscriber to your channel, but a looooooooooong time fan of everything Dune (with the notable exception of the David Lynch film). I'm so thrilled with your video on this amazing work. I will confess that I came to this book series as a result of the Sci-Fi mini-series, so I found the density of Herbert's writing to be very daunting to 12 year old me. But since then I have read and re-read the Herbertian novels, as well as the entire expanse of pre-quel novels written by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson. Can't get enough, and would love to see more about this extended universe. I always enjoy discussions/content where people point out the impact Dune has had on broader Science Fiction.

Great video! I read this book when I was 23 after studying Arabic in undergrad. There's a lot of Mideastern cultural influence in the names of things and the cultures Frank Herbert crafted. The book was incredible. I binged it in a week, which is fast for me. It's stuck with me to this day (I'm in my thirties now) and I really need to reread it before the film comes out. I agree with your take on it. The book's influence cannot be overstated. It's some of the best quality science fiction ever and, I would say, the best science fiction book of all time. I too read Dune the first time at around 15, more so to plug gaps and answer questions I had after watching Lynch's Dune. It was fun and immersive, but its real impact was when I revisited it at 18, and it truly blew my mind. I absorbed the next 5 books in quick succession. I had another Dune renaissance in university, when I returned to the first book (again!), when I was 20. More new insight, especially the part about never trusting leaders (which timed very well with my university years). Found myself re-reading it every year, for the next 5 years, always taking from it something new. Dune is truly among the greatest books I've ever experienced, and I'm all the more enriched and enhanced by it, not unlike ingesting the spice melange (LOL). For first timers reading it, I envy you. Hope you will enjoy and benefit from it like I did. And, hello from Malaysia. Ya Hya Chouhada.

Kudos for the video, man! I really appreciate you opening up at the end. I read this book around this time of year a couple of years ago. I was so impressed, I couldn't stop talking about it to my friends. It is so laden with themes, atmosphere and language, it's just unbelievable. I'm definitely in for a reread and for the sequels as well, and will most probably be occasionally coming back to it till my last days.

I bought Dune today! I loved the 1st movie. But I won’t start the book until I see part 2 😂 I have a theory that has never let me down: see the screen media first, then read. Because the book is always better…so I don’t get as mad at an adaptation if I see it visually first. Then I can genuinely enjoy both 😂

Great video! I like to look at the sequels almost as their own stand alone stories. I read ‘Hunters’ and ‘Sandworms’ and didn’t think they were horrible, but I just didn’t care.

This is the best non-spoiler "Dune" review that I've either read online or seen on TH-cam, and I've read and seen a bunch of them. In fact, this is one of the very best non-spoiler reviews that I've ever seen for any sci-fi novel ever. Mike is the first reviewer that I've seen who didn't just trot out all of the old talking points that always get mentioned regarding why this book has had such an enormous amount of influence on subsequent novels. To me, whenever I've seen other reviewers do it, it's like listening to someone read whatever's been posted about "Blood on the Tracks" on the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame website, or whatever's posted on the American Film Institute Top 100 Films website about "Casablanca." Other reviewers just seem like they're going through the motions and saying, "well, it has all of this influence, so we're obligated to genuflect in front of it." Mike's the first reviewer that I've seen to sit down and to spell out what it means to him personally - which is why this is such a great review. Best of all, he points out that the entire notion of being obligated to genuflect in front of anything is antithetical to whole point of the novel, which is making me really want to sit down and read it for the first time. Whenever I hear other TH-camr's that I like mention "Dune," I've always groaned out loud and wanted to fast-forward in the video to the next book they discuss, but I'll never do that again. I've now subbed to Mike's channel, and am looking forward to hearing more of what he has to say.

Just recently picked up Dune and placed it on my stack of TBR. I read on your Goodreads review that modern readers may not like this book. I fall under that category of a modern reader due to my love of Crichton novels. When i read i take notes on the book. I know I’m going to need a notebook just for Dune, also This copy contains a glossary of terms which i know will help. I am looking forward and a little scared of this amazing journey of which Dune looks to take me on. Sorry for the long ramble. Happy reading!!!! :) :)

That intro alone was enough to kick it wayyyy up on my tbr :D I get it, with more philosophical books it's always tricky if someone would like it or not. Many concepts depend on where that person is in life, from an philosophical standpoint. But I think I have been there for a while now. So now I'm ready to give this book a chance. Right after finishing Jurassic Park :)

Two things have convinced me to get a copy and try Dune - your enthusiasm and love for it and the new trailer. I watched the '84 movie when I was in my teens as my Dad was a fan of the books and the film but I was so utterly confused and lost I thought if the book was anything like that I wasn't going to bother. Great discussion. A beautiful story about what Dune meant to you. I love your enthusiasm. I am planning to read this summer of 2021 and I am totally pumped now. I actually read this many years ago and enjoyed it....I am hoping I enjoy it even more this time.
Okay, I'm currently 23 as of writing this, I read the book after I saw Denis Villeneuve's Part One (currently my favourite film of all time) and not only did I read it and not want to stop, but I fell in love with it. I can see how some may not enjoy it, but I ate it up. And I plan to read the rest of the books after watching Part Two. And I can comfortably call it one of my favourite books of all time, up there with the likes of Crichton's Jurassic Park.
My personal favourite scenes/sequences from the book are the banquet, Feyd Rautha's gladiatorial game and the final assault on Arrakeen. What a brilliant book.
I'm finishing up Heretic's of Dune ATM. When I'm finished Chapterhouse I'll be going back and do it all again. This is the first book series that has actually changed my way of thinking in everyday life. I was unsure whether it would go downhill after God Emperor, but Heretics is off the chain! So gutted Herbert didn't get to finish the last book!
Couldn't remember when you said you last did a re read of the last 2 books but I see more in common between the original and Heretics than any other. You should give it another shot!

Mike - I am 60% of the way through the book now and can totally see how, as a young man, the lessons of the book especially regarding the response to fear, would have a profound and lasting impact. I would say I experienced something similar when reading Jane Eyre at the age of 11, and she stands up and declares that no matter their age, gender, class, wealth, strength, or position in life - they are equal in the eyes of god (I know many younger readers and Booktubers who hate the book and fail to see how ground breaking that was at the time it was published).
I have also been struck by certain similarities with ASOIAF...especially Frank Herbert's willingness to bump off characters (it's that GRRM vibe that no one is safe).
Thanks for the heads up about the sequels- I had been wondering if I needed to read them or whether the first book can be read as a stand alone, so that was helpful.
I think we all have that one story that really changes the way you look at everything.
New reader here. I was excited for Denis Villenueve's new project called Dune, I had no idea what it was, but I love the director's work. It didn't take too much research to find out what the book was and what I was missing out on. I procrastinated a bit, but while at the bookstore, there it was, and I bought it. And just wow, what an absolute amazing read. I really loved it and plan to continue the series (and stop at Frank's final book. I don't have any interest in reading the other books that his son and the other guy wrote). And I have faith that Denis Villenueve will do the book justice!

Nice video. A neat part in the history of Dune was that even though it had been published as serials in Analog pulp magazine, no publisher wanted to release it as a novel. Only Chilton was willing to give it a chance. Yes, the publisher of car/truck repair manuals was the first publisher of the Dune novel.
It's also long been my favorite book. Also read it quite young, inspired by the Lynch film release. Loved it (though at least half of it went over my head). Have revisited it time and again over the years, and am now listening to the audiobook version with my oldest son (15), who's very intrigued by the trailer. Hoping this will finally lead to Dune being widely recognized by the public at large for the sci-fi masterpiece it is...
