I'll chime in here. So first book builds Paul as a Messiah, although his last actions should (if you think about it) raise your hackles quite a lot. Second tears him down as a Messiah. And the Children of Dune concludes his story. You should NOT read Messiah without reading Children of Dune because that's unsatisfying as hell.
This is my favourite book of all times. I started re-reading so I have everything fresh when the movie comes out. It literally changed my life when I first read it.
Finally, and I do mean finally (I am past 40 now) I have gotten around to reading 'Dune' thanks to this detailed review - A genuine thanks to you, Mike - Long may you read, and long may you run!
After finally getting to Dune, which has been on my TBR for a while, I’m starting it tonight. I’m just 16, which is the only reason I haven’t read it by now. Wish me luck.
I remember reading Dune for the first time when I was 17; it was when I was visiting my dad during the Christmas holidays of 2009 and I had just watched the David Lynch movie. I thought it was really campy but I wanted to read the book it was based on. So I went to the local library and lucky me, all six books were there, from Dune to Chapterhouse: Dune. I borrowed them all, locked myself in my room and just binged right through them, though I had to stop after reading Heretics of Dune, as I had completely burned myself out and the holidays were just about over. But it's such a great series; it pulled me in and didn't let me go. And just like you, I'm always picking up something new every time I reread them. Believe it or not, but God-Emperor of Dune is my favorite out of the whole series; to me, that's when everything comes together. I generally see the first three books as being one story, the first building Paul up as the Messiah, the second tearing him down, and the third concluding his story while beginning Leto II's story. To me, the last two books that seem rather superfluous. even though they're still a good read. Anyway, this was a great video and I'm super-excited for the upcoming movie.
Just finished the first novel. found your channel. ON TO THE NEXT ONES! This was my fathers favorite series, so happy to be finding the poetry and world building just as entertaining as he did!
I still maintain that God Emperor of Dune is the best single book out of the series. However, the Dune through Children of Dune arc is the best overall single story - and if you only read the first book you're seriously missing out: the later books totally change the meaning and import of the first. They really draw out the themed amazingly
I been watching some of your vids and I had to subscribe I just started reading dune today and am still at the beginning can’t wait to get more into it, and it seems some of my friends who are high schoolers just like me really like it so after hearing it was your favorite I had to start reading it keep up your cool content may the force be with you
Definitely reading this now. Read Lord of the Rings for the first time this year and loved it. Now I feel I have to read Dune as the foundation of Sci fi. Loved this video thanks!
Hi Mike. I'm a new subscriber to your channel, but a looooooooooong time fan of everything Dune (with the notable exception of the David Lynch film). I'm so thrilled with your video on this amazing work. I will confess that I came to this book series as a result of the Sci-Fi mini-series, so I found the density of Herbert's writing to be very daunting to 12 year old me. But since then I have read and re-read the Herbertian novels, as well as the entire expanse of pre-quel novels written by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson. Can't get enough, and would love to see more about this extended universe. I always enjoy discussions/content where people point out the impact Dune has had on broader Science Fiction.
Thank you for this. I’m a 36 year old sci-fi and horror geek. I own a bookstore and have an extensive home library...and never read Dune. I’ve always wanted to but felt the task extremely daunting. I think I need to finally buckle down and get to it.
Great video! I like to look at the sequels almost as their own stand alone stories. I read ‘Hunters’ and ‘Sandworms’ and didn’t think they were horrible, but I just didn’t care. I so wish Frank lived to write book 7 😞
I read Dune when I was 17. I loved it. I'm now 68. I haven't reread it because I was afraid my older, more cynical self wouldn't appreciate it like I did at 17. After seeing the movie and watching your review, it's now time for a re-read. Thanks for that.
Just picked up that cool orange version you have from a random English section of a bookstore in Madrid! So stoked to read it after hearing your thoughts.

Great video! I read this book when I was 23 after studying Arabic in undergrad. There's a lot of Mideastern cultural influence in the names of things and the cultures Frank Herbert crafted. The book was incredible. I binged it in a week, which is fast for me. It's stuck with me to this day (I'm in my thirties now) and I really need to reread it before the film comes out. I agree with your take on it. The book's influence cannot be overstated. It's some of the best quality science fiction ever and, I would say, the best science fiction book of all time. Thank you for your thoughts, Mike. I enjoyed the video very much!
I finally picked this up. I haven't read it since my 20's and I'm forgot a lot of the story. Iam a quarter of the way through it and it's bring back so many memories. Im glad you finally did this video.
I dont even read fantasy that much (mainly crime/thriller and non-fiction), but your videos are so great, that i watch them whenever they cross my youtube-frontpage. Keep it up, Mike, I really appreciate it. Greetings from Germany!
That was great Mike. I have read Dune when it was first published (showing my age!) but did not really get into it the way my family and friends did. Might be convinced to have another go now. I love your enthusiasm.
In my own mini-version of the efforts of the Missionaria Protectiva, I've started promoting Dune (the initial book, the Frank Herbert hexology and now Villeneuve's film) to younger people who - unsurprisingly - don't know much about what is effectively a baby boomer cult property. (I'm one myself and speak the truth here...) How I like to describe Dune is as something that nevertheless has a lot to offer today's rising generations. At its heart, it's a cautionary tale of dark politics, dark ideological and religious manipulation and ecological change, woven around a young person who acquires the ability to see the future, is horrified by what he sees, and struggles to change it. To say more would be to get into spoilers, but suffice it to say there are many echoes of Classical Greek myth in the story - the legacy of the descendents of Atreus (i.e. the Atreides!), the myth of Cassandra and many others.
"The power attracts the corruptible." That's good stuff. What a great video, Mike! I also read this in high school, got partway through and dropkicked it and I have never even CONSIDERED picking it up again, even as the book club I'm in are all saying they're planning on reading it before the movie. But after watching this video and hearing about political movements and chapter-long dinner parties where it's just machinations, I'm actually seriously thinking about picking this book up. Thanks for sharing your feelings about this book with us!
I too read Dune the first time at around 15, more so to plug gaps and answer questions I had after watching Lynch's Dune. It was fun and immersive, but its real impact was when I revisited it at 18, and it truly blew my mind. I absorbed the next 5 books in quick succession. I had another Dune renaissance in university, when I returned to the first book (again!), when I was 20. More new insight, especially the part about never trusting leaders (which timed very well with my university years). Found myself re-reading it every year, for the next 5 years, always taking from it something new. Dune is truly among the greatest books I've ever experienced, and I'm all the more enriched and enhanced by it, not unlike ingesting the spice melange (LOL). For first timers reading it, I envy you. Hope you will enjoy and benefit from it like I did. And, hello from Malaysia. Ya Hya Chouhada.
I bought Dune today! I loved the 1st movie. But I won’t start the book until I see part 2 😂 I have a theory that has never let me down: see the screen media first, then read. Because the book is always better…so I don’t get as mad at an adaptation if I see it visually first. Then I can genuinely enjoy both 😂
You got me convinced now! Dune has been on my shelf forever, but back in high school and college I could never get past the first page, it just wasn’t the right time for me. Now that I’m so much more into sci-fi fantasy I can’t wait to try it out.
Thanks for this review. I feel like it might be like my experience with Gone With the Wind, I read it at 15, 35 & 54. Each time I had a COMPLETELY different experience and message from it. I’m excited to read it! Thanks again! ✌🏼

This is the best non-spoiler "Dune" review that I've either read online or seen on TH-cam, and I've read and seen a bunch of them. In fact, this is one of the very best non-spoiler reviews that I've ever seen for any sci-fi novel ever. Mike is the first reviewer that I've seen who didn't just trot out all of the old talking points that always get mentioned regarding why this book has had such an enormous amount of influence on subsequent novels. To me, whenever I've seen other reviewers do it, it's like listening to someone read whatever's been posted about "Blood on the Tracks" on the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame website, or whatever's posted on the American Film Institute Top 100 Films website about "Casablanca." Other reviewers just seem like they're going through the motions and saying, "well, it has all of this influence, so we're obligated to genuflect in front of it." Mike's the first reviewer that I've seen to sit down and to spell out what it means to him personally - which is why this is such a great review. Best of all, he points out that the entire notion of being obligated to genuflect in front of anything is antithetical to whole point of the novel, which is making me really want to sit down and read it for the first time. Whenever I hear other TH-camr's that I like mention "Dune," I've always groaned out loud and wanted to fast-forward in the video to the next book they discuss, but I'll never do that again. I've now subbed to Mike's channel, and am looking forward to hearing more of what he has to say.
I always felt like Dune was basically a fantasy novel based in a science fiction setting. It's a brilliant blending of the two genres, taking many of the best elements from each and combining them to make something wholly unique.
It's also long been my favorite book. Also read it quite young, inspired by the Lynch film release. Loved it (though at least half of it went over my head). Have revisited it time and again over the years, and am now listening to the audiobook version with my oldest son (15), who's very intrigued by the trailer. Hoping this will finally lead to Dune being widely recognized by the public at large for the sci-fi masterpiece it is...
Nice video. A neat part in the history of Dune was that even though it had been published as serials in Analog pulp magazine, no publisher wanted to release it as a novel. Only Chilton was willing to give it a chance. Yes, the publisher of car/truck repair manuals was the first publisher of the Dune novel.
because of you, Mike, I become really obsessed with the Dune universe, and I bought all the books about Dune..yes, including Brian Herbert's books as well.
Kudos for the video, man! I really appreciate you opening up at the end. I read this book around this time of year a couple of years ago. I was so impressed, I couldn't stop talking about it to my friends. It is so laden with themes, atmosphere and language, it's just unbelievable. I'm definitely in for a reread and for the sequels as well, and will most probably be occasionally coming back to it till my last days.
A really nice review, thanks. As for the sequels, I would say that the God Emperor is mandatory, not because it is my favorite book, which it is, but because it is the stone that concludes what came earlier (the golden path and what was the sacrifice that one had to make because another one couldn't) and really introduces what's to come (that sadly won't be ended as Frank Herbert died).
Actually bought the physical book because of your trailer reaction. Thanks again for being so honest about what this book meant to you when you were going through a tough time. It’s how I felt about The Great Gatsby.

You started out with my favourite quote from the whole series. Thank you
My pleasure!
After finally getting to Dune, which has been on my TBR for a while, I’m starting it tonight. I’m just 16, which is the only reason I haven’t read it by now. Wish me luck.
I completely agree with the comment on the dinner party. So far, that’s been super inspiring
God Emperor was my least favorite on my first read. But it’s my favorite now. So good!
New to the channel and not really a Dune enthusiast but greatly respect your review and the impact the book had on you.
Just ordered this book can’t wait! Never saw the movie and have no idea what it’s about so I eagerly await being able to read it soon :)
“Power attracts the corruptible” - definitely one of my favourite quotes from the series
Just re-watched this gem...definitely a top 3 videos on your entire channel, still. Fire.
Thanks! It was important to me to do this one right.
Happy to help!
Welcome!
Thank you for this. I’m a 36 year old sci-fi and horror geek. I own a bookstore and have an extensive home library...and never read Dune. I’ve always wanted to but felt the task extremely daunting. I think I need to finally buckle down and get to it.
This is a well done video without any real spoilers, I appreciate it. Super excited to dive into these books.
Ok you convinced me. I have taken dune on and off my TBR for 16 years. I’m gonna buy it next week and read it!!! I’m so excited... and nervous
Yes!
Mike's Book Reviews already on your recommendation alone I’ve started red rising, faithful and the fallen, first law and now dune! Damn I love your channel :)
Thanks!
That was great Mike. I have read Dune when it was first published (showing my age!) but did not really get into it the way my family and friends did. Might be convinced to have another go now. I love your enthusiasm.
Hope you enjoy it on a second reading.
In my own mini-version of the efforts of the Missionaria Protectiva, I've started promoting Dune (the initial book, the Frank Herbert hexology and now Villeneuve's film) to younger people who - unsurprisingly - don't know much about what is effectively a baby boomer cult property. (I'm one myself and speak the truth here...)
How I like to describe Dune is as something that nevertheless has a lot to offer today's rising generations.
I hope you will, I'd love to hear your thoughts on it.
@@mikesbookreviews Well, I just bought the book. I guess we'll see now!
Awesome story. Thank you for sharing.
I hope you dig it!
LOVING that intro as always!
Thank you.
Thanks for this review. I feel like it might be like my experience with Gone With the Wind, I read it at 15, 35 & 54. Each time I had a COMPLETELY different experience and message from it. I’m excited to read it! Thanks again! ✌🏼
My pleasure!
I'm already reading it as per your recommendation 👍
On a side note I've also read Jurassic Park and it was AMAZING - have more Michael Crichton on my TBR now so thank you!
Seriously the movie didn’t do some of the best parts. Also I liked the sequel even more, but couldn’t stand the second movie.
Michael Crichton has so many great books about so many different topics. Just so many amazing reads.
@@katieamarsh I've bought the second book but wanted to get Dune out of the way first! I wasnt ever majorly into the films so didnt know if I'd enjoy the book but yeah... its great!
Good WYSR!
Excellent book, still reread every two or three years :)
That intro alone was enough to kick it wayyyy up on my tbr :D I get it, with more philosophical books it's always tricky if someone would like it or not. Many concepts depend on where that person is in life, from an philosophical standpoint. But I think I have been there for a while now. So now I'm ready to give this book a chance. Right after finishing Jurassic Park :)
Crichton is always an acceptable absence.
I use the litany in my work as a Mental Health Nurse all the time. I teach it to so many patients.
So awesome to hear.
The litany of fear is my mantra rather than a prayer.
I’ve just finished it! I’m amazed! Just loved everything!
So happy to hear that.
Mike's Book Reviews now I’ve just finished Dune Messiah and OMG I’m crazy about everything! It’s just perfect! 🥳
I'm 31 and I just read Dune for the first time and absolutely loved it
These are my favorite videos from you.... I don't actually care if the books have mass appeal, I actually think these videos give me a good idea if I should read or pass on a book. I think your passion for the book is the most important thing with this vid series because that passion gets me hyped to read!
Mike, read this (Yes, "The Trilogy", which was all that was published at that time!) and I had a similar transformative experience. Thanks for sharing your experience of Frank Herbert's DUNE.
Always happy to share this story.
Sold! Between you and Content Lit's book lists my TBR Scifi list is breaking records.
Due to your videos, I went out and blindly bought all six of the original Dune Chronicles. My God, man... What have you exposed me to? Easily up there with The Dark Tower and The Vampire Chronicles as my favorite fantasy series yet. I love your work and your tastes. Mega thanks for convincing me to look into Dune and finding my new favorite world to escape to.
Never stop being a bookworm inspiration to me.
These are the comments I live for. Dune isn't going to work for everyone, but those it clicks for it REALLY clicks for.
@@mikesbookreviews given certain things that have happened to me, this novel hits kind of hard. Lol
It was very moving hearing you talk about what the book has meant for you.
After watching part 1, I really want to read the book. I want more detail of the world and don't want to wait for part 2 lol.
I have ordered a bunch a books for my birthday this month. Dune being one of them. Looking forward to read it!
Hi Mike! Just subscribed to your channel recently and I am so happy watching your videos. I finished reading Dune for the first time and I loved it. I think it was the right time for me to do it. Will continue reading the rest of the series.
Wonderful!
i'm 30, started reading a couple years ago but was so hard to get thru it. I even bought the new book version but still couldnt get into it. But after seeing the incredible movie, i am motivated finally.
Hope it clicks this time!
I was wating for this one. Really excited to see this
This is the best non-spoiler "Dune" review that I've either read online or seen on TH-cam, and I've read and seen a bunch of them.
So glad you enjoyed it!
What a fantastic, passionate and brilliant review. Thanks Mike
Thank you for another great video! I’ve read Dune twice and now you’ve inspired me to want to read it again.
Looking forward to this. Your honest passion for Dune is what got me subbed to begin with
I read God Emperor of Dune when I was 26. It's my favorite of the series. I love the conversations Leto has with everyone.
Just started a few days ago! Can't wait for this video!
I just started part 3 of the book and I’ve been so entranced by its story.
Just bought the Great Dune Trilogy in hardcover today,
Looking forward to the journey of reading these.
because of you, Mike, I become really obsessed with the Dune universe, and I bought all the books about Dune..yes, including Brian Herbert's books as well.
Dune is next on my tbr thanks to your reaction! And I'm not even a sci-fi fan:) thanks for this Mike!
Excellent. I hope you enjoy!
People didn't like the dinner party? I was on the edge of my seat during that. strange.
Best Why you Should Read ever! Reading this one soon. Love ur work.
Wow, thank you! Hope you enjoy the book.
I've been waiting for this video since the day I first discovered your channel.
Hope you enjoyed it!
I just ordered a copy and it should be here in a couple days. Looking forward to finally reading Dune, I've heard so many good things about it.
Excellent!
I think the series gets better and better. I've nearly finished Heretics of Dune. Should be starting Chapter House in a couple of days
...and it's gonna be the last book of Dune series that got better. Ever :(
Actually bought the physical book because of your trailer reaction. Thanks again for being so honest about what this book meant to you when you were going through a tough time. It’s how I felt about The Great Gatsby.
I watched the movie that came out a few years back. Loved it. Decided to read Dune. I'm almost done. I think I love it. But it really helps to have people like you who are really excited about it to confirm why this is so good. Thank you!!
So glad you're enjoying the book!
I enjoyed this far more than I expected to enjoy any book review, and thank you so much for your thoughts.
ayye that dinner party was great !! lol
Those are the facts.
I'm about 50 pages in...im enjoying it...there is a bit that seems to go over my head but i think I'm getting most of it..i think its a book that comes with more understanding with multiple reads? Idk but i like it so far 😊
Thanks for this! I'm at about the 55% mark and finding it easier to read. Dune has been on my TBR for years. Finally tackling it to get ready for the movie. Glad I did. Love the channel dude!
I've just started Dune and half way through. Takes a bit to get going but when it does, its such a page turner. Can't wait to finish it.
I am rereading it after more than 20 years. It is so fantastically good. It thought me a lot, so I completely comprehend the influence it had on you. I hope many more are getting the same experience.
"Don't live in an echo chamber. Think for yourself." Well said. This is a principle I've followed my entire life, but I didn't learn it from Dune. I haven't actually read the book, but plan to someday. Thanks for the video.
I ordered the entire series boxset and also the deluxe edition of book 1. Can’t wait to read this man.
Enjoy the ride!
I just read the dinner party chapter and I was hooked following it all! Can't wait to keep reading and see what happens next!
Just started reading it brother! I'm hooked. Purchased multiple editions and the new graphic novel part 1. Stoked!
Just reading this now. Honestly you and 1 other booktuber are the only ones I watch. You are positive. I feel its so trendy to be negative about books on TH-cam now.
I like to believe in "be the change you want to see." So I'll always try to be positive on these things. Hope you enjoy the book!
