Soul Fraud by Sigils - A Great Urban Fantasy!
Welcome back! Today we're looking at the Debt Collection series, by author Andrew Givler @GivReads (also known as the gamer, Sigils!) @sigils
This is an urban fantasy, similar in style and vibes to the Dresden Files. It’s light hearted, action heavy, and just a lot of fun.
I’d also consider this series almost G rated. Very family friendly. And yet, this is still a pretty adult series in terms of complexity. It has intricate mystery plots with very well executed twists at the end. There’s some very well thought out worldbuilding of secret Immortals and secret magics. And there’s just excellent comedy too. Check it out!

This is why I homeschool. I teach my kids to read, get them off the ground and flying, then let them loose on the bookshelves with relatively low input on their choices. My only requirement is they keep a log of their reading and rate the books.
Say no more, I’m reading it
Points of view...not point of views.
Honestly the parts in the series where i didnt like shallan was her not being assertive enough at all. its apart of her character and her struggle with her lies and insecurities which led to her creating persona’s to protect her and i understand that and after book 4 i really like it now. But at book 3 i dont think it was handled the best, for me it just made 2 shallow characters to take over most of shallans scenes so i didnt get to see more of shallan herself. When shallan was forefront like in book 2 before her personalities got fractured and in book 4 where those personalities (veil and radiant) actually interact with and help shallan i thought she was really good. I dont think casting the shallan criticizer’s as women haters who dont like when women speak is kinda lazy when my criticism’s of her is she wasn’t forefront enough when veil and radiant were created. But thats just my thoughts i havent really seen shallan haters at all so maybe your comment is valid. But i want more shallan, not veil or radiant, excited for book 5!

As a Christian, but didn't become one till I was adult, I truly appreciate your section on religion and your courteous way of sharing. Something I have found when I try to talk about books with some Christians, is they say, oh well I only read the Bible. It sounds very holier than thou answer, but come to tell they read maybe devotional or 10-20 minutes of Bible, and the rest of their time is spent else wise. But it often makes me feel bad to say I read my bible, but also read other books. Some of those books (often including fiction not even allegorical ones) drive me closer in my faith!
First time seeing your channel and I just wanted to say you're doing great. I'm no fan of these books and nevertheless I had no problem spending the 33 minutes with you talking about them. Greene is a goblin, and as an elf, I can't support their kind. (joking...or am I?)
24:32 As an American (from Colorado) after what happened earlier this November....this comment is absolutely (and appallingly) true.
So Lewis was heavily influenced by George MacDonald, I'm curious about your stance on some of MacDonald's writings?
My preteen read Gregor the Overland, and got me hooked. It was genuinely an enjoyable series. This was a very well thought and expressed review. My husband won't read them, but as I discuss these topics with him when we watch the movies he's quick to see how relevant it is to today.
Tiste Edur in 5, not Andii
i lost this video in the sea of my watch later playlist but finally got to it, and man, these books sound awesome!! i don't tend to enjoy romance stories - probably partly due to the internalized misogyny i'm still working through, partially because they usually are so heteronormative they're really frustrating (i'm trans, mostly gay, aromantic, and polyamorous, so hooo boy do i not have a typical relationship with... relationships, i suppose), and also romance just isn't a genre that moves me much - but it's really important to me to learn to respect books that other people enjoy, and honestly i'm so impressed by the list of representation you gave that i really might give this series a try. thank you, kit, genuinely <3
Totally disagree that fiction shouldn’t be used to make a point about an issue. To me that’s the whole purpose of fiction. It can make points in ways that non- fiction simply can’t.
Ok, you definitely got me interested. This sounds like a really cool series
Can anyone maybe recommend books similar to the poppy wars ??
@TehreemZainab-km5rj I'd say Thr Fifth Season, and Red Rising are very similar. Good quality writing, dark content, draws a lot from real world history, strong character writing. I do have videos on both if that helps.
@@cronkthebookguy yeah thank u ill be sure to check them out !
That was great thanks for the info! Gardens of the Moon has been on my shelf and will read the series one day. Was just curious why everyone says it’s difficult. Now I know. No exposition and that many POVs is gonna be tough but I look forward to the challenge !
@nickwhite4168 great attitude! You'll have an awesome time, I'm sure.
To be honest, after Wizard and Glass, the Dark Tower turned into complete waffle. Completely incoherent nonsense. He was on such a roll, then it went to shit. Including himself in the story was a bad mistake. It all became self serving rubbish. The story went in so many different directions. I like he brought Father Callahan back, but it was too hard to follow all the nonsense. He brought some sense and clarity back with The Wind through the Keyhole, but all that nonsense in between.... maybe thats when he was on drugs. Then of all the movies he walked out of was Transformers? Come on mate, what about half of your movies. His cameo in the new It was disgraceful. At least put in an effort. I grew up on Stephen King, but Stephen King has become a hack. Too much of a celebrity, no effort
Can you pls provide timestamps
One of CS Lewis' flaws as a writer from what I've noticed is that he has a hard time getting into the minds of his characters and truly thinking about how events will affect them. Outside of the "Problem of Susan", the biggest example of this is The Lion, Witch and the Wardrobe ending. In that, the kids end up back in the real world and they are perfectly fine like nothing happened. Like...What? How could they ever go back to normal? Imagine growing up to be an adult in another world where you were a ruler, and then being sent back to the real world to the same age you were before, being forced to go through puberty for a second time and knowing that no one would ever believe you. That would seriously mess someone up. None of that is brought up or even considered. That's part of the reason why so many modern isekai/portal fantasy stories like this don't have the protagonist go back to the real world at the end--because it would mess someone up and you can't just back to the way things were. There are plenty of other examples of this in the books. They also feel rather static and one dimensional. Fairytale protagonists are still affected by the plot and undergo some sort of change, even if it's super basic. I think the Disney movies did a better job of addressing that issue, but I still think CS Lewis should've just had the kids stay at the end and never go back to their world in the first place to nix the problem completely.
Hey ! Is the third one of the next trilogy out ?
I'm halfway through book 5, and the glossary has been vital to my understanding of my understanding of the series. I've also been taking notes since halfway through GotM on what I expect to not remember but be important, and going to the tor summaries when necessary. Also, reading it slowly has been helping alot. I normally read 50-100 pages of a fantasy novel a day, but malazan I have to read less because there's more per page to digest than the other fantasy I've read. I know it's an overused comparison, but Malazan feels like Sark Souls. And by that, I mean when you finally pickup on the plot twists, implications, and relationships between characters, it feels as rewarding as beating a boss you've been spending hours on in DS. They're both incredibly rewarding experiences if you have the patience and determination to develop the skill sets needed to overcome them.
I saw a battered copy of Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrel in a used bookshop, and a year later, I'm still annoyed that I didn't pick it up. My mum loves Jane Austen, so I hope I can introduce her to it via audiobook. It's definitely up near the top of my 'most want to read' list, and I'll check out the mini-series, too.
Like many people, I dropped off with reading for fun after university, because at that point I was just so relieved to not have to do it daily anymore. This year, one of my friends convinced me to read ACOTAR so that we could enjoy it together. I had such a good time reading it! Since then, I’ve been getting into Sanderson, re-reading ASOIAF, and have many other books lined up to try 😊 thank you for your videos, as they have been helping me decide what to read next!!
The Goku reference just earned you another half hour 😂.. from a private investor

They used plates because there were very few working guns.
Thanks for making this video. I was struggling to put my feelings on this series into words but you did it perfectly
Great review! One thing I want to correct is that the character with a white streak in their hair more likely has internalized racism, which is shame or self-loathing centered on one’s race.
This series is one of the best. It is a must read. I will say it again - this series is a must read. I am 59 and luv it And my 20 year old kids luv it
I read so much Discworld in my teens before reading any other fantasy novels. It wasn't until LOTR came out in the cinema when I was at uni that I read other fantasy books. Terry Pratchett was a huge influence on my life and are entwined with my comming of age. His death was so hard that reading his final book had me cry in public. I took a massive break from Discworld after that. Now as a dad and more life experince rereading(via the great audiobooks they done recently) the books are hitting harder. TP is one of the greatest underated authors of all time. You come for the fantasy and comedy but you stay for the philosophy, wonderful writing and of course Death.
Don't forget that before the farm boy goes on his journey, he receives a magic sword that was used to kill off hundreds of the previous magic users.
Ooooh! That's brilliant! 😁😁😁
Great video. I’ve always been reading since I learned to read. But there were a few years that I wasn’t reading. Since bout this year I’ve been reading something consistently.
I remember picking up "shadow of a dark queen" in the airport as we were leaving to go on holiday when i was 15. Read that damn book like 4 times during those 2 weeks, and nowhere on the island had the next one and had to wait til we got home to acquire.
Your way of saying Dune is cool as fuck!
seeing as you said people should tackle other books or series first before The Wheel of Time, if they don't already have a good reading habit, what books would you recommend? I am planning to try reading LOTR again. although I never finished it when I was younger, I also think I was reading it at too young of an age, and was reading it because I loved the movies, so I was comparing them too much. Aside from LOTR tho, I'd love some recommendations, as The Wheel of Time sounds very interesting and so many booktubers absolutely love the series even with its cons that i've also heard about.
It depends on what you're into. But generally speaking, start with middle-grade books or YA. Don't worry that it's intended for younger readers. If you're out of practice, start with something easy. If you're a bit further along, try reading adult books that are 300-400 pages. Something small and manageable. Then once you've got some consistency and momentum behind you, tackle something big and chunky like WoT. LOTR is an amazing series, though it is a little long and very dense. Still, give it a try!
I've found anyone that loves LeGuin, is normally on the path :)
@@lawng6027 100% true. ❤️

Eagerly awaiting crescent city video. I'm curious of your thoughts on the "multiverse"
Would you consider GRRM’s Frey Pies an implication? Or are the implication you mention in this video less Easter eggish?
Wait there is a 5th book? I haven't read these in over a decade even though I find the characters pretty interestingly. Like a stupid kid I was I found myself skipping forward to sections where she featured. I reread them on a road trip about 7 years later and still liked them.
Never read wheel of time, and probably never will. Comparing something good with something of questionable merit is not a fair review.
