  • The Zaku III Custom Twilight Axis Version is the odd stepchild of Neo Zeon's Zaku lineage. Coming to us in the High Grade Universal Century 1/144 line, this kit was a P-Bandai exclusive and featured an odd assortment of parts from both Zaku III kits. So come find out exactly what came in the box and whether or not it's a good alternative to its retail brothers!

    I love this kit and have paired it with the Tristan. I like the lore that Char did not push through with using this, as the Tristan was previously the Alex, which never made it to Amuro.
    They were the intended models for the two famous rivals.

    Little fun fact about this mobile suit and why it was painted in chars colors. In lore it was originally planned to be used by Char during his attack on the earth in the movie Gundam Chars Counter Attack. But since the Sazabi was completed in time for the attack he was never used by Char and instead put into storage.

    If this was a normal retail kit it would be sort of cool that you can mix and match pieces. But it always amazes me how low effort some of the P-Bandai kits feel. 15+ years later and they can't have the fuel tanks the right colour or give you a normal beam saber for a so called "premium" product? Once again I like your balanced take and that you don't just go on a rant. Makes for another enjoyable video!

      I bet the designers were only allowed to use what was already there, so they weren't even allowed to make a new beam saber handle for clear blades or even mold the whole runner in white for the tank (which PBandai MG kits totally do). This kit is bizarrely really expensive online nowz even though there's really nothing that isn't avaliable in retail kits...

    I'm honestly disgusted Bandai didn't even have the decency to swap out the beam toothpicks for actual effects.

    • @HobbyClubhouse
      @HobbyClubhouse  3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      They were dead-set on only reusing what the already-present molds could do and not a bit more :') I think if they had handles with holes in them and no blades, like some old kits strangely had, they would include some new clear beams

    Ah yes The Twilight Axis, like many others I was disappointed by the HG Tristan, but yeah it is what it is just need to accept that. Also interesting review of the Zaku III Twilight ver, not a lot of people reviewed it. So it is much appreciated

      I actually didn't mind the articulation of the Tristan much, knowing the age of the base kit, but wished the new parts were better made (that big white gun...)
      Real glad you ennoyed the review! I struggled a bit deciding to make it or not since I wasn't sure if anyone would want to see a mostly forgotten P-Bandai release from 2017. Glad I did

    Ahh Yes after seeing your previous review on the Zaku 3 I was actually thinking are you gonna review the Twilight Axis version if you could get your hands on it & boy was my wish answered! Yeah it’s design & articulation is outdated, But hey, at least it exists to please fans of Twilight Axis and includes weapons of the Geara Doga

      It's actually a bit hard to get this kit now since Bandai never released second rounds of it and mine was from the initial release (and had the luck of sitting around unbuilt till now). I think I kinda like this kit the other way around and enjoyed the animated fight that came because of this kit, which was actually nicely done, because the poor Unicorn one was barely on screen at all...

  • @colonelsanders82
    @colonelsanders82 ปีที่แล้ว

    I did buy this kit specifically because it comes with the Gears Doga guns. The Zaku III that appears in Unicorn wields one. And since the Zaku III hasn't seen some sort of update/revive/unicorn version like a number of other kits...
    As for the colors, well, the Char scheme is neat. I am not so hot on the glossy plastic, however, so I may end up painting it.

    Ooh cool, interesting! Didnt know this kit existed!

    • @HobbyClubhouse
      @HobbyClubhouse  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It was quite a while ago when it was sold on PBandai after all, and Bandai didn't sell second rounds of it, so it's a bit forgotten, though people can make one out of retail kits

    I honestly don't mind this kit's existence for the lone fact that you can use all of the grey bits to fix the weird blue on the OG custom without paint

    Although it's a bit of a cash grab, I think it's the best the zaku III has ever looked

    the options are nice but wow lol, would literally be better off learning how to customize an original hguc zaku III into this version than hunt this down and pay scalper prices.

    • @HobbyClubhouse
      @HobbyClubhouse  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It really is terrifying if you look up the price of this kit online, especially when it contains no unique parts. If you get two Zaku IIIs, you even actually get two complete MSes

    6:44 if it Bandai doesn't made it, the you have to scratch build it

  • @Adniwhack

    its interesting that this kit has an exact price of 2052 yen.....

    • @HobbyClubhouse
      @HobbyClubhouse  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bandai seems to calculate prices according to how much plastic is used (and sometimes add a bit more on top). This will haunt you every time you see unused parts or entire runners that are only for a few pieces... it's all trash that costs money

    • @Adniwhack
      @Adniwhack 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@HobbyClubhouse Yeah that is understandable. HG Shining break.

    • @Brawler_1337
      @Brawler_1337 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@HobbyClubhouse Depends. Sometimes those leftover parts are perfectly usable for customizing. The Astaroth Rinascimento is a perfect example of this. Other times, you’re going to have to put more effort in to kitbash with those parts.
      Regardless, I never throw away unused parts.

    The TA kits were all very low effort

    • @HobbyClubhouse
      @HobbyClubhouse  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I imagine the designers were told they were only allowed to use what's already made so Bandai could resell things without any extra costs

    • @Brawler_1337
      @Brawler_1337 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Twilight Axis was basically Bandai testing the waters for interest in late UC stuff that wasn’t Unicorn. They also used it to gauge interest in a HGUC Zeta Byarlant and a MG Jegan, both of which we later got.

    I just don't think the Zaku III looks good as a model kit
