im one of those tourists who goes back to this part of Japan each time I visit. and i also grew up in a town that experience post earthquake damage for decades 🙋🏻. thank you for sharing these bits of your journey ❤
Hey I just wanted to say thank you for making videos about the things I like the most: cycling and Japan! Your videos are full of useful informations and editing is top notch. One of my dreams is to go from Cape Soya to Cape Sata by bike, I hope in the future you will share some more tips about bikepacking in Japan. PS: I'm a 7/11 type of guy 😁
wow thank you, that means so much! I hope you're able to do that ride one day, it sounds like it would be incredible. The Roads to Sata is one my husband's favorite books, if you haven't read it already. Its about walking instead of biking but you might like it! Thanks for your nice comment!
Just back in the US after two weeks in Japan, including a few days in Kanazawa and a visit to that exact spot with the little cave on the Amaharashi Coast in this video. It was such a beautiful time to visit. Before I left I watched your channel and was hoping to spot you on the road but alas YT will have to do. Thanks for all the great videos Annie! Looking forward to your future adventures to remind me of this wonderful part of the country. PS I’m also a fan of the Lawsons egg salad sandwich :)
Hi Jeff, what a small world! Very cool that you were just on the Amaharashi Coast too - such a great time of year to ride. Thanks for watching, and for the kind words. Wishing you lots of fun/beautiful bike rides in the future!
Great video Annie! I had no idea you had your own channel, TH-cam can be scary sometimes. Perhaps it is just because I watch so many cycling videos. Thanks again for being an excellent tour guide for us. Japan has so many cool things to see. I bet that train that went along the coast would have some amazing views.
Hi Kirk! The TH-cam algorithm is wild haha, thanks so much for watching and for the nice comment! I hope you guys had a safe trip back - hello to Stacy too! 😄
Great video! I really enjoyed your informative commentary. What a beautiful area and campsite. Those manhole covers are fantastic! Thanks for sharing. I always look forward to your cycling videos.
It's frightening to see so many buildings and roads now left at precarious angles and knowing the infrastructure costs it would take to return everything to normal. Those marks are going to stick around. The coastline is beautiful and I hope the area has a smooth recovery. Konbini wars: Definitely Lawson for me. Kaarage-Kun seasonal flavors are fun and they have a lot of sweets/bakery stuff we like - mini creampuffs, the cream and godiva choco roll cakes, and the three greatest cookie snack things OF ALL TIME: ピーナッツぎっしり, ミニチョコビスケット, ザク!サク!クランチチョコ. I could rotate through the three of those happily forever.
Me too, it will take time but luckily there is progress on repairs being made every day. And those are some great recommendations! I'll have to try those cookies - I have to say that when it comes to cookies the 7/11 big chocolate chip cookie is my favorite!
Living the dream Annie! Riding, camping, painting and trainspotting :P The weather looked fab. My favourite kombini action last year in JP was the late night, slightly merry, trips to the ice cream fridge for a lucky dip selection! Keep the video goodness coming!
definitely living the dream! It was a fun weekend - I am always finding my way to the convenience store ice cream section too haha. Thanks for watching!
AHHHH bikepacking! It's like a combination of my two favorite things ever, always wanted to try it out! I've never seen someone do it in Japan, so this was awesome. And this route was surprisingly beautiful as well, not in the "Kanazawa-way" like in the last video but just in its own way. It sort of itched that urge for childlike wonder and adventure. Also my god, the sunrise by the lakeside and then the beach with the rocks draped in wisteria flowers were gorgeous! I swear the sun just doesn't make those sorts of reddish hues here in the US. And thank you for doing the kind thing and moving the adorable little turtle off the road!
Haha you'd like bikepacking I think! Yeah Toyama Prefecture has a lot of beauty, and the coastline is especially nice - I'd like to try longer bikepacking trips too, but I think I need a smaller tent first lol. I didn't know world turtle day was a thing, what a funny coincidence!
Lovely video, you have a nice style! Brought back memories of a bikepacking tour I did to and around the Noto Hanto many years ago (a 4 day trip from Matsumto, Nagano). It was my first bikepacking trip too!
Thanks so much! And wow what an awesome route, I love Matsumoto and the Noto Peninsula is so beautiful! I bet that was a mega day getting over the mountains from Matsumoto to the peninsula haha. In case you're interested I also made some videos about our biking tour around Noto Hanto (th-cam.com/video/AtgQuM1PLaI/w-d-xo.htmlsi=ZaPz9l7eMzqqU4gx) and biking from Kanazawa to Matsumoto and back (th-cam.com/video/OOgtL6N20mY/w-d-xo.html). We didn't camp those times though!
That looked like a fun ride. Well done for camping. I always end up in business hotels on my long rides. Nothing beats a nice shower at the end of a day in the saddle. SevenEleven beef croquette. I'm kind of addicted to those. Great bike food!
Amaharasi Coast is famous for the view of Tateyama over the Toyama Bay. I have ever been to Amaharasi Coast . Because I like climbing the mountain and riding a bicycle.
@@AnniewhereAndEverywhere just so you'd know, I've been binging your videos and I find it inspiring and now I'm planning to bring my bike from the Philippines to Japan and do a week long bikepacking trip :) thanks and keep up the good work!
@@kimdabsmd wow this made my day to hear! that is so cool - what part of Japan will you be bikepacking in? I hope you have a great time and would love to hear how it goes after your trip!
@ probably from osaka to kyoto to takayama as i really enjoyed the train going there. I’ll definitely make a video out of it and give you guys a shout out there 🫰
I'm curious if you ever lock your bike. I've been here about 15 years and have never locked my bike, but I always feel a bit strange about it (especially with my road bike). It just seems like unnecessary weight. If I have to replace my bike every 15 years due to theft, probably I can live with that 🙂. If you do lock your bike I'd be curious what you are using for a lock. I'd also love to see a gear episode if you haven't done one already (I haven't had time to go through all your videos yet ;-) ). As always, great video! It's nice to see videos showing what I think are the best parts about living in Japan.
Good question, I know what you mean haha - I don't usually lock my bike if I'm just going inside a store quickly or something. I do use a lock if I leave it somewhere overnight while on a trip, or if I'm in a crowded place. Its a pretty lightweight 3mm coil cable combination lock that fits in my front bar bag, but I really only bring it with me on multi day rides. Maybe I'll make a more gear focused video in the future! Thanks so much for watching!
@@AnniewhereAndEverywhere Ah! That makes sense. I actually bring my bike bag on multi-day trips and put the bike in my room. Sometimes there isn't very much space left in the room afterwards :-) Loving the videos. Keep up the great work!
How much does carrying all that stuff affect your speed and pace? I tried adding a few things to my bike as a test, and I was surprised how heavy everything feels! And not even enough weight for an overnight stay. But maybe it is because it is still early in the season for me.
good question, it definitely makes the hills feel harder, and slows down the overall pace - but you can carry speed through the downhills much better since the bike is faster/heavier on the descents haha. Maybe look into whether you can re-balance where you are carrying the weight? For example, I would try to put heavier things closer to my bike and not at the end of my saddle bag where they could swing around or make things feel off balance. I think it will get easier as you get used to it though!
It's a 54cm and I'm 5 ft 8 inches - but if you're looking for a similar bike/are a similar height I would test ride if possible because your leg/inseam length can make a big difference too

Right!? Lawson have the best coffee. That’s what I am telling to everyone, but nobody seems to care.
(7-11 have the worst, imo)
haha I agree that Lawson is the best! I don't really have a "least favorite" though, especially in the morning I'm happy to have any coffee😂☕
Living as you do in Ishikawa, have you read Ruth Steven's "Kanazawa - The Other Side of Japan" (1979)?

I haven't, I'll have to check that out!
