Hydrangea Season in Japan! Cycling Slice of Life & Garden Bike Tour of Kanazawa 🚲🪻🍦 金沢でサイクリング
It’s June in Japan, which means it’s hydrangea season! I thought I would take you along on a little bike cruise around Kanazawa this morning to see Honkoji temple, known for its hydrangeas, as well as a park on Utatsuyama filled with iris flowers in bloom.
I’ll also show you where to get some soba ice cream, and take you to a bakery, because there’s nothing better than cruising around to get snacks by bike!

      it is a little hot and humid but not bad in early June. July and August will get very hot and humid though! I think bigger cities have a more brutal summer, but that's part of the reason why I was riding so early before the sun had been out too long.

    Japan is a relatively safe country, but I still worry about camping alone as a woman. If you are staying overnight, I recommend that you bring your husband with you.

    • @AnniewhereAndEverywhere
      @AnniewhereAndEverywhere 15 วันที่ผ่านมา

      thank you but I disagree. There are some places in any country where I wouldn't feel safe being alone, but I wouldn't say that it is unsafe to camp alone anywhere just because I am a woman. I just do my research ahead of time, bring proper supplies, let family know where I am, and maintain situational awareness. Often I feel that camping/biking/hiking alone is no less safe or risky than many things I do alone in daily life anyway

    How much does carrying all that stuff affect your speed and pace? I tried adding a few things to my bike as a test, and I was surprised how heavy everything feels! And not even enough weight for an overnight stay. But maybe it is because it is still early in the season for me.

    • @AnniewhereAndEverywhere
      @AnniewhereAndEverywhere หลายเดือนก่อน

      good question, it definitely makes the hills feel harder, and slows down the overall pace - but you can carry speed through the downhills much better since the bike is faster/heavier on the descents haha. Maybe look into whether you can re-balance where you are carrying the weight? For example, I would try to put heavier things closer to my bike and not at the end of my saddle bag where they could swing around or make things feel off balance. I think it will get easier as you get used to it though!

    AHHHH bikepacking! It's like a combination of my two favorite things ever, always wanted to try it out! I've never seen someone do it in Japan, so this was awesome. And this route was surprisingly beautiful as well, not in the "Kanazawa-way" like in the last video but just in its own way. It sort of itched that urge for childlike wonder and adventure. Also my god, the sunrise by the lakeside and then the beach with the rocks draped in wisteria flowers were gorgeous! I swear the sun just doesn't make those sorts of reddish hues here in the US. And thank you for doing the kind thing and moving the adorable little turtle off the road!

    Oh my god Kanazawa in spring feels like the quintessential Japan experience with its cherry roads and narrow traditional alleyways. I've been planning my family's entire Japan trip recently, which is fun but honestly super overwhelming, and I'm kinda regretting not including Kanazawa now haha. But there's just no way i could fit it in with just a week. Also now that I've begun researching cities and places in Japan now a lot of your videos are starting to geographically make sense to me which is very cool. And sry for being late to this video, finally finished with my AP exams!

    Just back in the US after two weeks in Japan, including a few days in Kanazawa and a visit to that exact spot with the little cave on the Amaharashi Coast in this video. It was such a beautiful time to visit. Before I left I watched your channel and was hoping to spot you on the road but alas YT will have to do. Thanks for all the great videos Annie! Looking forward to your future adventures to remind me of this wonderful part of the country. PS I’m also a fan of the Lawsons egg salad sandwich :)

      Hi Jeff, what a small world! Very cool that you were just on the Amaharashi Coast too - such a great time of year to ride. Thanks for watching, and for the kind words. Wishing you lots of fun/beautiful bike rides in the future!

    Great video Annie! I had no idea you had your own channel, TH-cam can be scary sometimes. Perhaps it is just because I watch so many cycling videos. Thanks again for being an excellent tour guide for us. Japan has so many cool things to see. I bet that train that went along the coast would have some amazing views.

    Lovely video, you have a nice style! Brought back memories of a bikepacking tour I did to and around the Noto Hanto many years ago (a 4 day trip from Matsumto, Nagano). It was my first bikepacking trip too!

      Thanks so much! And wow what an awesome route, I love Matsumoto and the Noto Peninsula is so beautiful! I bet that was a mega day getting over the mountains from Matsumoto to the peninsula haha. In case you're interested I also made some videos about our biking tour around Noto Hanto (th-cam.com/video/AtgQuM1PLaI/w-d-xo.htmlsi=ZaPz9l7eMzqqU4gx) and biking from Kanazawa to Matsumoto and back (th-cam.com/video/OOgtL6N20mY/w-d-xo.html). We didn't camp those times though!

      It's a 54cm and I'm 5 ft 8 inches - but if you're looking for a similar bike/are a similar height I would test ride if possible because your leg/inseam length can make a big difference too

    Right!? Lawson have the best coffee. That’s what I am telling to everyone, but nobody seems to care. (7-11 have the worst, imo)

      haha I agree that Lawson is the best! I don't really have a "least favorite" though, especially in the morning I'm happy to have any coffee😂☕

    I'm curious if you ever lock your bike. I've been here about 15 years and have never locked my bike, but I always feel a bit strange about it (especially with my road bike). It just seems like unnecessary weight. If I have to replace my bike every 15 years due to theft, probably I can live with that 🙂. If you do lock your bike I'd be curious what you are using for a lock. I'd also love to see a gear episode if you haven't done one already (I haven't had time to go through all your videos yet ;-) ). As always, great video! It's nice to see videos showing what I think are the best parts about living in Japan.

    • @AnniewhereAndEverywhere
      @AnniewhereAndEverywhere หลายเดือนก่อน

      Good question, I know what you mean haha - I don't usually lock my bike if I'm just going inside a store quickly or something. I do use a lock if I leave it somewhere overnight while on a trip, or if I'm in a crowded place. Its a pretty lightweight 3mm coil cable combination lock that fits in my front bar bag, but I really only bring it with me on multi day rides. Maybe I'll make a more gear focused video in the future! Thanks so much for watching!

      @@AnniewhereAndEverywhere Ah! That makes sense. I actually bring my bike bag on multi-day trips and put the bike in my room. Sometimes there isn't very much space left in the room afterwards :-) Loving the videos. Keep up the great work!

    That looked like a fun ride. Well done for camping. I always end up in business hotels on my long rides. Nothing beats a nice shower at the end of a day in the saddle. SevenEleven beef croquette. I'm kind of addicted to those. Great bike food!

      croquettes are so good!!! I wish there was a plain potato one though, maybe there is but I always see just the ones with meat
