  • Putting a M.2 SSD in a good old IBM/Lenovo x3650 M1 and booting the server on it was something,, I though it would be cool. But only gave it, ah 40% -ish chance of actually working. But It did!! Awesome!

You literally have done everything that I’m currently doing with this and I’m just following along! Just installed a high speed nvme in one of the pci slots, and have already 60tb of sata data because of the 5015 raid card, as well a 1650 graphics card without power in the pci riser card with your cutting technique. This is now the perfect plex server!

If you are using a x3650 M1, be mind full of it´s power usage :-) it is a great server but also a bit power hungry.

I bought a Kingspec ssd once. 64gb sata. It worked at acceptable speed (close to hdd speeds) for a few months. After that performance went down to 150 kb/sec speeds. Never again!

There is an entire write-up on M.2 SSDs. there is two variants for storage: SATA III and PCIe. not all two-notch cards support PCIe, and are limited to PCIe x2 speeds. single-notch is PCIe only and can use the full speed of the X4 slot it can go into in an adapter. suggestively, see if the card works in the lower slot. you might be able to get it to work. some support both protocols.

      Hi Sudos
Thank You very much! I am toled that the CPU is way to old for the PCI-e versions. I am more or less just getting power from the PCI port.

for booting, yes. for using as a storage medium? nope. still, to do a test to see if it even will show up as a bootable device would be an interesting thing, since IBM's BIOS implementation on those machines does go away from norms, being a server and all. it *might* be able to see it as a bootable device, you never know.
I got stuck with an m.2 2280 double-notcher thinking it was a PCIe x2 AND SATA compatible card as some are, and got a passive adapter to try and make use of it as a storage drive, and to my dismay, it was only SATA in the end. there's also a good write-up on the intertubes somewhere about which brands/models use which standard for what, and that's generally how I found out aside from the big ol' SATA marking on the label I didn't bother to fully read. I just got excited that it was an m.2 SSD and oh wow it's all mine, but nope, still can't use it yet.

you should make a video on encryption and use of PCI-X Crypto Accelerator, no matter how much i read about this stuff, still hard to understand, and thanks for the M.2 explanation, I've read about 10 posts each of them was an essay, and nether one explained what distinct types there are, all of them said "you dont need the really fast one just get EVO" so thanks for explaining *_in one sentence_* that its SATA and NVMe, latter being the fastest, and connecting through an adapter or directly, and must be supported, or else it works over slower SATA protocol, thank you again

I wouldn't bother with the M.2 slot if the CPU and chipset don't support it. It's NVME and sadly, the M1 is awesome but this is too new for it. The best you can get is what you have already.
But could you run 2 SSDs in RAID 0 off the controller for boot redundancy?

I guess that NVME and S-ATA will work when both are equipped, as m.2 has a power Limit of arround 12.5 watts where as the PCIe Slot without additional Power is capable of providing upto 75 watts as it is in the PCIe Standard since Version 1.0

    • @MyPlayHouse

25W is defined for PCIe x1- x8 that is right...
      But
      should be enough anyways :

if you get an nvme drive with an OPROM the x3650 will boot off of it, look at the plextor m5e drives, they have an OPROM (and that's what I use on my old systems)... most NVMe drives sadly lack an oprom and won't boot old machines that lack NVMe support in the bios

I don't think you will see any advantage of using a NVME ssd using the PCI-E bus since you prolly have either version 1.0 or if you are lucky 2.0. Each lane on 1.0 is 250 MB/s and 2.0 is 500 MB/s per lane. most of those cards will only run 2x on PCIE so if its 1.0 it will be actually slower than SATA 3.0 and only a marginal gain on 2.0

from what i understand on older bios . a pcie . nvme adaptor would be recognized as secondary storage by the os. just no able to boot from it.
also your post strike curiosity in me and research nvme boot compatibility on older mb ( ie my z77). the community mod firmware to make the z68 z77 z87.

Hi Morten, I would like to know if 2850 M2 can get more Capacity on Gb from a SSD RAM DISK slot x8 upper than 4x 146Gb SAS having total 587.6Gb hard disk SAS. Thinking to make Raid from SSD and to boot Windows System.
Every slot x8 gets 4gbps, you have a lot experience of installing any type of SSD, however before buying anything I prefer to ask you.
Because if 3850 M2 it carry on being limited on 587.6Gb from RAID then I must thinking on an SSD no faster than 4GBps and no bigger than 587.6 HD SAS.
    1.-what do you recommend me??
I have a RAID 1, to be protect by clonning datas, but may be It is better to have RAID 0.

Hi Morten, inthe next link: lenovopress.com/sg247630.pdf page 127 describes next:
Depending on the level of RAID you want to configure, up to 584 GB of disk space can be used internally by using four 146 GB drives. Table 3-10 shows the supported disks
However If I decide to make bigger hard disk than 584 GB SAS from a SSD Ram Disk x8 slot, for example 2TB SSD Ram Disk x8 slot, It could be posible? or is it takes to do from M.2 SSD because de Intel Chip is lower than I6 or I7 and may be It does not recognice it ?
      My tarjet is the next:
To be able to boot from PCIe Card x8 SSD RAM DISK or to boot PCIe Card x8 SSD M.2 depend on if hardware is compatible chipset to do it and having Disk Drive bigger than by manufacturer 584 GB SAS from 4x 146 SAS. Then I could do configuration RAID drom PCIe Card x8 SSD Ram Disk a lot bigger than 584 Gb SAS. I do not know if the last choise its posible. I am learning from you.

I have installed it in "ML10 V2 Intel G3240 4GB No HDD" and it does not work after I installed VMware esxi 6.0.0. I will have to get an M.2 SATA SSD and plug it in to the second slot.

If I connect the sata cable will I be limited to 3Gb or 6Gb standard sata port speed?
Is it possible to connect only the M2 to the pcie board?
    Thanks

    Mort:
Always love your videos. Yes, I installed M2 NVMe boot drives in most of my computers now, and I am so happy. The costs are too much really for the Samsung NVMe drives, so I recently tried and liked the Intel 600p series. The write is SLOW but the read is FAST. And, they are cheaper than Samsung's NVMe drives. Actually, Samsung used to be CHEAP when I purchased them, but SEEMINGLY???, they have went up in price or maybe I just caught them at right time. So, I'm holding off until these NVMe come down, and I'm kindof doing like you. Just making it until costs come down. Again, love your video. You are about my favorite TH-camr. • @MyPlayHouse
      @MyPlayHouse  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi david yamil
No,, the SATA disk only gets power on this PCI-e card, and need to be connected to a SATA port to work.
The other M.2 NVME, gets both power and connection. so if you only use that, you do not need the cable.

If you are not to use NVME for bootup it will most likely work. There is even a trick to have NVME m.2 (the PCIe Link variant) boot up with older Nehlem based chipsets even from legacy Boot Mode (NVME needs UEFI to be bootable normally. What I heard it could be achived by Clover, but was not able to verify that by now. mrlithium.blogspot.de/2015/12/how-to-boot-nvme-ssd-from-legacy-bios.html).

In university they used to show us vmware player and i never searched so much about. before 2 years i wanted to do a small rendering cluster (but the only rendering cluster you showed was about 3dsmax ) If you have time to do a video with video rendering encoding using ffmeg. As i read i think ffmeg can do distributed encoding with segments from one video to speed up process.
