  • I usually recommend this IBM x3650 M1 to one two people every week. So I might as well make a vidoe telling you all about why.
    Link to servers and parts : amzn.to/29ezyzl
    But Ebay.??? is often a better bet.

    Supermicro servers support load reduced memory that can be as dense as 32GB per module. Load reduced means it uses half the power as a normal memory module.

      Hi Jasminder Bangar
      Thank You very much! RDIMM are faster then LRDIMM. right now you can get 32GB in both RDIMM and LRDIMM. if you want 64GB or 128GB blocks only LRDIMM are available.

    Of course dd-wrt uses very little memory, it was initially made for home routers, which are embedded devices and usually don't have much RAM.

    10Gbit has been VERY uncommon until about 2015 where prices have come down a bit for switches and a lot for adapters, seeing the Intel X540-T2 for as low as 160€. I happen to use 10Gbit because I work with large PSD files where it makes a difference if it takes 1 or 4 seconds to open.

      Yes they are terribly expensive. If you diehard need it (like myself for transferring huge amounts of RAW images from my MacBook), you are best off with 2 port NICs in a "token ring" configuration, eliminating the need for a switch.

    If you run a Quad Opteron 6380 you can run 1TB of RAM and you still get three or 4 PCI-E slots to add on GPU. Search on Ebay "Quad Opteron 6380." A Quad can run a total of 64 threads and has 32 real cores.

    Excellent video. After looking at your videos I made a good decision to start building my rack. Currently I have 15 dell Optiplex 755 and hp 5700 pcs as servers. After getting them and upgrading those machines I found out that the cost is very similar to getting IBM or HP severs that are far more reliable and more expandable. Using VMware to maximize the resource I will also have a saving on the electric bill.

    Thank you for this explanation, Morten. They are really cheap these days in the US. Now, too, the x3650 M3's can be had for about $300 including shipping with dual processors and 48 GB of RAM with no hard drives. The M4's however, are still pretty expensive in most cases being close to $1,000. These servers can still do a great deal and are much more effective and robust in my opinion than the other popular server, the Dell PowerEdge 1950 or 2950.

I got this one from eBay (Dell CS24-NV7 Cloud Server 12-Core 1.80GHz AMD 2419 with 64gb ram for $120 without shipping) it is also good for beginners the only bad thing is it doesn't run bare metal that's why it is not pretty cheap and people don't buy it. It is extremely good for Hyper V bare metal as it I was running it on there. Maybe I will make some video on it and share you with it. Also I just wanted to verify with you how much power consumption does the IBM M3 server that you consume?? Is it equal to HP DL380 Gen7??

    What's the reason this can only run 2TB hard drives? I mean, even the old PATA could handle drives up to 128PB (or about 131,072TB), so SATA would certainly be able to address the same sizes? And as for file systems, they have been able to handle these sizes for a long time! The old ext3 could do 16TB, and ext3 will go up to 1 Exabyte! So why only 6x2TB hard drives, and not something like 6x8TB? I mean, after all, if you're running 48GB of RAM and 2x4 3.4GHz CPUs? (Not regarding the question what it's being used for, like large corporate databases or something like that?)

    I don't really see why you'd want a loud server with a dismal performance per watt ratio that needs its own infrastructure to be efficient in what it was actually build for.
    The thing will cost you a minimum of 500 euros to run here per year on energy costs alone and with the added acquisition price of the unit, extra memory, storage and infrastructure, you'll be looking at a price where you can easily get something that runs cooler and uses less power while still providing performance and storage that is perfectly fine for a home server.
    The TCO of these things is to absurd to even consider using them in any scenario.

    • @MyPlayHouse

      I get asked 10 times a week, what I'd recommend, and this is an awesome server, I have managed over 100 of them, and never had to call one in sick, disks die Yes! but on 8-9 year this keeps going. Two faster Xeon E5450's in it and it is as fast as a new $300 single CPU, Yes it's power hungry. I have 12 of them my self.

      @Diggnuts 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My PlayHouse
      I did not ask anything, I gave an opinion that you failed to respond to.
      It is economically unsound to run these servers as a home setup. It is ecologically unsound to run these servers at all.
      There is a reason why data centers dump these hunks of garbage like this and there is a reason why home use is more suited for a low powered NAS solution.
      Advising people to get this old junk without a proper outline what you could use these for apart from some hoarding fetish is unfounded and perhaps unethical.
      "Servers" are a tool for a job.. if you don't understand the job, then you don't understand the server.

    • @MrLamrod174
      @MrLamrod174 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Diggnuts I think you are missing the point. These would be ideally suited to a home lab, as he states in his opening statement. I.E. For educational purposes.
      A traditional NAS would not be able to run a virtualization hypervisor and therefore be limited in its functionality.
      Additionally, Morten is an enthusiast and given the content of his channel; I would expect the majority of his viewers to be of the same persuasion.

      Also this model uses far less power the M1 of the IBM. As compared to the "HP DL380 G5 vs the G6's, the G5 uses gross amounts of power vs the 2 G6's both use the same amount of power running vs 1 G5. Also something to keep in mine.

      Yes, and I think getting a server that uses DDR3 RAM will be cheaper to expand and indicates a much lower power draw. Also, it might be worthwhile to pay more for models with L Xeons to reduce the power consumption as not everyone is able to use alternative energy like Morten. 10th generation Dells (D210->D710) are also supposed to be quite good price/performance wise.

    I do not use enterprise grade server
    I use my own built from mixed grade parts
    Main Logic Board: Asus SaberTooth 990FX R2.0
    CPU: AMD Phenom II X6 1100T, North Bridge / Memory Controller at 2.6GHz, Hyper Transport at 2.6GHz
    RAM: 64GB, 4x 16GB DDR3 PC3-12800 1600MHz
    LSI MegaRAID MR SAS9261-8i (it may be IBM M5015, but I am not sure) with Battery Backup - this drives RAID6 over 6x 4TB Seagate Constellation ES.3 SAS2 HDDs
    nVidia Quadro NVS290 - PCIe x1 graphics - I tun out of slots
    Intel I340-T4 - this "server" works as bridging router too
    LSI SAS9201-8i - same as SAS9211-8i, but purpose built for IBM - IBM M1015, if I am not wrong - it drives 6 2TB SATA HDDs, which work as RAID6 over BTRFS - this is just temporary solution as temporary BackUP
    Chelsio S320-CC2 - 10GbE, RoCE, iWARP, iSCSI Converged Network Adapter
    I use Xen for Virtual Machines, but I would back down to KVM, as it is much more convenient and I do not suffer from losing any capabilities (I am using KVM on 2 TestBeds now)
    I am planing to remove SATA HDDs as soon as possible and remove LSI SAS9201-8i
    this would make space for adapter card for NCME and M.2 SSD.
    Both will be used for booting
    BackUp of whole booting area will be on RAID6 anyway

    I think too many people took this advice. I went to price a 3650 M1 and can't find one.
    I'm probably better off just putting the money into the DL380 G6 I just got anyway. It has no hdd, only 16Gb ram, I want different processors, and it only has one 460W power supply.
    Now that I think about it he said one of the IBMs HAD to have the second power supply with two processors, does anyone know if this holds true for an HP DL380 G6?

    • @MyPlayHouse

      The x3650 M1 is at least one generation of processors older then the HP DL380 G6,, the x3650 M2 are same generation. Intel Xeon 5500 and 5600 series.

      Hi
      Yes it an okay price,,, it not fantastic,, The Intel Xeon X3430 is a :
      Clockspeed: 2.4 GHz
      Turbo Speed: 2.8 GHz
      No of Cores: 4
      Max TDP: 95 W
      Which benchmarks at 3373 - this is kind of slow-ish The Xeon's i recomend in this video,, the E5450 is around 4310 and it fits two.
      Try and install VM-ware ESXi 6.0,, if it can't run that, straight out of the box,, I'd pass it on to the next lucky dude :-) and try again.

    Morten, I found your channel through Brian/Brainiac75, and I subscribed instantly, this looks like really good content!
    However, I'd like to ask you for what reason do you have so many servers in your house? What do you use them for? I mean, I've got my own little home server, but it mainly runs an instance of OwnCloud for backing up my phone and sharing data with friends and family, however it runs on an old IBM Thinkpad X61s sub-notebook computer, and the big advantage is that it uses only 15 Watts of power! So it's really cheap, and with running Debian Linux on it, I could even run a small website on it, like a Wordpress blog or whatever (after all, OwnCloud is also just a website of sorts). But I've never imagined that one could have the need of so many servers at home, I mean that's not just one, it's at least two racks full of servers. What do you do with them? If you have a video explaining that, I'd greatly appreciate a link to it - or if you can answer in a comment, I'd love to read about it as well. All the best greetings to you from Berlin, Germany!

    Great informal video. Think or well I hope I answered some questions for you. I think the 1 question of pfsense on vmware may not be a bad idea or other VM based firewall solutions. I'd like too see it. Keep the server video's coming. Thanks.
    I have tested pfsense on real hardware total waste of a box as it uses nill ram and nill hhd space out of the box, once you start adding extra stuff to it then you start hitting up hhds caching space and the ram starts to add up.

      Depends on your situation. Personally, I hate running Pfsense in a VM because generally I try to turn off as much as possible at the end of the day. I also don't want to have to rely on that VM to get internet for the rest of the house.

    If you're here in the states and looking on eBay. try narrowing your search to your local area. If you're near a major city you might find shops local that re-sell these. There are at least two within 20 minutes of my work (Richardson Tx) that buy and resell server and desktop pc hardware from corporate liquidations, datacenter upgrades, decoms, etc. That will save you a LOT of money if you can go pick it up locally.

    Actually Windows Server 2016 comes with Storage Spaces direct which for data safety is much more awesome than ESXI and the licensing costs are much cheaper. VMWare sucks you in with the free hypervisor but the advanced features are way more expensive compared to windows server 2016. Also with hyper-v you don't have to know linux, which is what ESXI is based on. The Hypervisor version of Server 2016 is free to install on bare metal, and you can do clustering with it out of the box. Server 2016 also supports shielded VMs and Secure VMs if you really want to isolate VMs from the Host and other VMs. For Datacenter edition you can get full licenses for about $20USD. Storage Spaces direct supports tiering of storage media types so you can have M.2 drives, then SSDs, then Spinners, and storage spaces uses the fastest possible storage as caching. You can also build in redundancy on a software level as well while avoiding the pitfalls of raid.

    • @MyPlayHouse
      @MyPlayHouse  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Jasminder Bangar
      You are right about some of this,, But if you think a legal Microsoft lic. for Server 2016 datacenter is $20,, that is not the case. : www.microsoft.com/en-us/cloud-platform/windows-server-pricing.
      $6155 and with that you get the right to use it on 16 cores,, so it your server has 32 cores,, well you need two DC lic. and you will need "CALs are required for every user or device accessing a server".
      There is a free Hyper-V that you can install,, it does not include any lic. to install any Microsoft servers, so if you want to keep it free you will need to install free operating systems,, like linux.
      Thank you for watching! :-)

    Is there a real advantage to use a ten year old 19" format power hog server for home lab use over a newer system other than one can play with old iLo, IDrac or IBM's kvm versions?
    Especially when run 24/7 I'd suggest a more modern system like some HP Microserver, Levnovo's Thinkserver 140 or Dell's PowerEdge T20.
    They use way less power and produce less noise.
    I've got an older HP Microserver with 8 GB RAM (capable of running ESXx, now on Debian) and a shiny new Supermicro system with a Xeon-D 1541 (compare this to the E5450 :) w/ 64 GB (128 GB max) running ESX6. Both systems pull together with all stuff around (UPS, Switches, etc.) about 85W from the socket..
    Ofc' the Xeon-D system is a little overkill just to run 10-20 VMs - but it hast enough power to transcode video, is really silent and has a high WAF (woman acceptance factor)..

    • @MyPlayHouse
      @MyPlayHouse  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      IF you find any Rack mountable servers, which is compatible with WAF (woman acceptance factor) do tell.

    I'm running 2 IBM x3650 m2s that I got for an absolute bargain ($340 AUD delivered for both with X5570 CPUS and 96gb ram each!) with proxmox and really happy with them. Might be worth recommending this server too if it comes up cheap (except as a NAS) :)

      Hi
      I recommend all the x3650's But the M1 is just the cheapest way into servers,, and it can really do a lot.
      I have made a extra switch in VMWARE where the internet connection goes in and only pfsense are connected and is routing out the other network port.
      Thank you for Watching! :-)

      @starbridgecentre 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the reply. Just a note that pfsense may have higher cpu usage than ideal if you're using virtualised network drivers instead of pci pass through, it does on my m2 and seems to be a common problem. May be different in VMWARE, i'm using KVM through Proxmox.

    Personally I would recommend 16GB there, 2x4 on each CPU because most server motherboards do not work at all with single channel (quite honestly they haven't been designed for little RAM, they are designed to be fully equipped).

    IDK about over in Europe, but here in the US you can get some r710/x3650 m3 tier servers for between $100-$200 depending on the condition.
    But sadly it seems that the r720/m4 servers are $600-$1000. Which is a HUGE jump in price for not THAT much more performance.
    Some year hopefully the haswell servers will be down in the $200-$300 range, so I can get something that will be a bit lighter on my power bill.

    And how much power does one rack with 15 servers use ?

    • @MyPlayHouse
      @MyPlayHouse  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi
      I do not have power backup,, I do not run anything that important. We have a very stable power grid. We lose power twice a year,, in average. and 15 minutes is as fare as I can remember, the max time.
      A server uses somewhere between 100 and 300W,,, check out my F.A.Q. under the "about" tab.

      Well it all depends where in the world you live guess like me your power bill is high even when you turn on a light in your house. Certain AMD CPU's will not run Vmware. If your planning on trying there low low watt CPU's I've tried. My one HP server I have built from the ground up from spare parts I added 2 Xeon L5500 series CPU's these are low watt models something to look into if your worried about the power bill, also like Morten said make sure you use high Dimm's 4/8/16 DIMM's. 1/2GB now a days not worth the hassle. 24GB ECC server kit may run you 50 US.

      The Intel Xeon 5400 series does not fit in there,,, 5600 series does.
      You can run 1000 servers, but they share those CPU´s, and RAM, so you would also need a lot of RAM.

    Thank you for that info. I was thinking about buying this server but there are 2 issues with it for me:
    mentioned power consumption and (more important) the noise. Running that "home server" in the same room where I'm working whole day is not an option :-/
    But as I saw on your's videos what cool stuff you can do with virtualization I've build a N3150-ITX (passive cooling) server with 16GB or DDR3 ram and it runs Win2008R2 with MSSQL and 4 linux machines with some web dev. Currently, with one HDD it uses about 35W max. Of course, CPU does have basic VT-x and EPT, only one Gigabit eth port, but I think it's nice machine for start. I've also tried to install ESIX 6.0 but there were some issues so I've ended with Proxmox and it just works fine.
    Maybe some day I will have own playhouse ;)

    • @chrislowe8085

      really nothing. just make sure you have hyperthreading enabled in your bios, some older bios "DELL" have HT disabled. As Morten said get an old ssd for the boot drive for vmware. My "HP DL380 G6's" have an sd card slot on the motherboard which has vmware on it. A UPS is also recommanded.
