- 1995 documentary about The Band featuring interviews with Rick Danko, Levon Helm and Garth Hudson, Eric Clapton, John Hammond, Emmylou Harris, George Harrison, Al Kooper, Carl Perkins, Phil Ramone, Todd Rundgren, Ringo Starr, and Bob Weir
The grace on display when Levon talks about Richard. Wow.
Levon had a very eloquent way with words and talking as much as he did with his singing voice. I could just sit listen to him talk
@@fabjen1961 brought tears to my eyes the beak such awesome talent
Man, Levon helm was one of a kind
The Last waltz was a great concert. Bitter sweet.
God I love Danko. God Bless that man. Levon too. What a group of talent they were. The Basement Tapes hit me like a ton of lead when I discovered it. I was an obsessive Dylan fan at the time, living among the banks of the Seine in Paris, when I picked up that album and was just floored. Sounded like a troupe of circus musicians or something. Never heard anything like it, even to this day.
I've been a fan of the BAND since I became a fan of BOB DYLAN.they were a fantastic "BAND" and I still love em' to this day.long live RICK DANKO,LEVON HELM and RICHARD MANUAL.
@@BDB78 they loved playing music it always showed , Robbie might have been a lil koocoo and wanted all the attention, this wheelsonfire the book excellent read
Nobody will ever forget The Band, the music or Richard. Loves!!
Manuel was always my favorite
The BAND. Will never die. classic music. Hey I'm 60 and turned many young people on classic music. God bless you all for the wonderful music
Absolutely I just turned 65 older than most won't be long ill be nothing but coast
My life has been insanity lately. The Band is getting me through.
I feel ya
Levon was perfect in Coal Miners Daughter. And let's not forget another perfect appearance in Shooter. He is a multi-talented man. I mean when they use your music in Easy Rider...and yeah, back then, they made me forget what was botherin me.
They touched my soul then and still do. Unique is an understatement!
If you can make people forget their trouble for just a little while, and remember you, you've done your job. The essense of The Band. Somehow, music, pro sports, acting, politics... It's all gone the wrong way. I lived and performed during the best period of music. Period. God bless these musical heroes.
So glad I came across this upload today. I sat and watched all episodes, thank you to big pinkerton for making this available to view. Shame about the copyright issues, as a fan of The Band I know what's up, but still well worth watching. RIP Levon, RIP Richard, RIP Rick. To quote lyrics of a song by Marc Cohn, "...I was lost, I was gone, listening to Levon, in another world, in another place."
The day I heard of Richard was so very sad. I was but 18, the date happens to also be my Sisters' Birthday so I always am reminded of the tragedy which befell Richard and ALL whose life he touched with the music he and the rest of The Band played for us all. And THANK YOU ALL for ALL of the music you guys did play for us. It`s such a bloody shame the record companies are involved in the making of records. I mean talk of Thieves and how discouraging it must have been and still seems to be so at the very near root of the entire business. Too bad we don`t get a second chance to stop and look over all the people who will or would be hurt by such an extreme action. He and the rest of The Band touched me close to my heart when I was very young, I THANK THEM ALL FOR THAT GIFT IN WHICH THEY SHARED WITH THE WORLD!!!!! THANK YOU Robbie, Garth so much!!! Your BEAUTIFUL music will live on FOREVER!!!!! Brad Rodgers, a fellow Canadian.🙂
Thanks a million for uploading this amazing documentary. I would love to find this gem on a laser-disc. I don't believe they ever reissued this on DVD (I could be wrong) so laser-disc might be the way to go. Without your uploads I wouldn't have known all of this existed...so thanks again.
What can you say the band of all bands everybody in that band was a star and the strongest link whoever put this together thank you from the bottom of my heart God bless the band peace love feathers and music forever
I’m glad somebody put this on TH-cam. Thanks, whoever you are 🙏
That closing song is awesome
What I find so bizarre about this documentary was not just the complete lack of participation by Robbie Robertson, but how his lack of participation was completely ignored by the people making the film.
Was he asked? None of us know the conversations that were had by all involved. Only they know. Another funny thing about the documentary is none of the members talked about drugs and drug addiction which was the real culprit to the dismantling of the Band in the first place. I’d drop to my knees in reverence to all of them for respect to their supreme musical talent, skill, artistry and abilities. Collectively they were all the best of the best and I’m sad we never got to see more of the magic they coulda created. I’m not taking sides one way or the other, I loved them all for their contributions to the musical world and still marvel at their exceptional and exquisite musical talents both as individuals and as a band.
Kinda tells ya what they thought about RR taking all the money and running! It’s no secret!
And RR was never welcome again. He was not the talent anyway. He just wrote some lyrics inspired by Levon, Richard and Rick.
Inspiration doesn't equal writing. @@jeffmitchell9863
@@jeffmitchell9863 Really do you know how many lyrics Robbie wrote, he was up writing in the morning, when the others, except Garth, was sleeping in because they had partied the night before. They all did drugs including Robbie, but Robbie and Garth stayed away from heroin. It is ridiculous to say Robbie had no talent, don't think you have done too much research. Robbie did the research, went to the library to read of on the Civil War and the expulsion of the Arcadian's, for Arcadian Driftwood. Your comment is very ignorant.
A most incredible VOICE that stands out in the universe..................
Levon the legend
THE Band. No one else could have pulled off that name.
They said the name just fit
They'd been displaying their top western world pop talent since the 1950s in Canada with Ronnie Hawkins as The Hawks, but most of us didn't even know they existed didn't until their last concert, The Last Waltz. Tragic. Every Band member should have been a multi millionaire.
They probably could have been if not for spending it on drugs and not knowing how to invest. Not unusual for musicians or other high profile people athletes, actors ect.
@@hannejeppesen1809 Maybe. I don't know their drug use history.
It is well documented, Robbie write about it in his book "Testimony" as does Barney Hoskyns who wrote the biograhpy of The Band. They all did drugs, but Levon, Richard and Rick got into heroin. @@DUCKSAREEVILLLLLLLL
@@hannejeppesen1809 So, Garth Hudson and Robertson were the least crazy? I would have guessed that.
Beautiful
Richard singing (THe shape I'm in)how prophetic.
Thank you soooo much for sharing these videos with us.
Greetings from over the big pond outa Germany. 👍🎶🥁☮🌍✌
Greatest band ever. Many of them succumbed to the cigarettes, alchohol and drugs. Plain truth. That's what killed them.
Great video 🤗🤗 Thank you for posting 🤗🤗
Noticed Levon never mentioned Robbie's name once.....
Robbie was the stepbrother in the BAND. He gave and took... but what he gave the others gave to his giving and lifted it.What Robbie took from others became his.
Notice how a brother stabs u in the back for $$, and then he never sees ur back again!!
@@jeffmitchell9863 False, later when Robbie did some solo albums, both Rick and Garth played with him. Levon was really the only one who was really bitter. Even though it was his own fault that he spend himself into bankruptcy.
Authentically beautiful!
I love the opening theme to the last waltz. 😊
These guys were the -go too guys...for the best artists of their time! I too would have loved Robbies input.,but the facts suggest the split was ..for him, irrevocable. Damn! So much shared history but after it finished l recall the guys backing Van Halen for his berlin wall concert...4 originals present...made me hopeful that good things from them might be forthcoming
Ricky Nelson's 'Garden Party' comes to mind. They don't want to hear your new stuff.
Thank you
Fantastic
LEVON'S GREAT COMEBACK about "The last waltz" and that being the "End of the Road" I Could NOT understaND < aT THE Top of our game, WE WERE HAVING a "going out of BIZ show" !! The BAND? Not so much of a BAND> Meanwhile the idea of "being part of the heartbreakers" Literally +KILLED Tom Petty.. The last tour, TP KNEW he had a crack in his hip, BUT WOULD NOT STOP" needing Pain killers, and at the end, the Hip was fully fractured. I've had two, and cannot imagine THE PAIN HE WENT THROUGH "For the Fans". AS ANY WEIGHT OF THAT FRACTURE IS A KNIFE OF PAIN.
Sounds like they experienced their own "Garden Party" with their fans!
Jericho was one of the best recorder by the Band great songs. but Ive been a fan since big pink and a dylan fan since 62 so Im alitttle biased. freat people too...
Such a sad story for this beautiful band . I think that doing the last waltz was a pretty big mistake overall because after that it became just " boring ", like they were booked to play the same tune over and over with nothing new or few new song which were mainly covers and so they just became an old band surviving. Even if i think the problem due to the publishing and song writting credit was real, robbertson pointed a good point tellin that none of them were writing anything significant except him, because they did not do anything after he left and god damn how talented they were ... Such a waste! Alcohol and drugs are a pain . sad stuff
The band that made Jericho was not The Band, but what the hell.
Fantastic! Anyone know the title of the last (playout) song that Levon is jamming?
The song Steppin' Up in Class was written by Jimmy McCracklin and Don Robey and was first released by Jimmy McCracklin in 1965.
@@hairyhoudini5565 Thanks man, I look forward to looking it up and listening to other versions.
I believe Garth hudson still living
Yup‰
What about Robbie?
Donald Duck Dunn on Bass!!
Robbie pretended to sing but he sucked at it and his mic was never on, LOL!
Robbie wrote the songs, played great guitar, great storyteller, and to this female of that generation incredible good looking and full of charisma. So what if he couldn't sing.
@@hannejeppesen1809 Meh.
Coal miners daughter.
One my all time favorite bands truly amazing, I truly fascinated by them , Robbie Roberson good musician but he killed the band any fan needs to Reed this wheels on fire Roberson wasn't the main song writer levon helm was , and levon lived the band the beak committed suicide over the band going to break up it was Robison who wanted to call it quits the record company's convinced the band let the cute guitar player be the front and everything you'll be successful, and it was over then , Jericho was the beginning of the end kinda Roberson sold out I love his solo work but the band was everyone Roberson ruined it , rip levon Rick and the beak (Richard) I was 13 years old I wanted to be levon helm Muhammad Ali George Harrison Eric Clapton, yea I ended up junkie nothing glamorous there happy new year all 2023 in a few hours , cheers 🥂 God bless thank you the 60s and 70s for the greatest decade I experienced! Music is phenomenal
Levon never wrote a song after the Band broke up. Robbie was the writer. Levon was great but not a songwriter. Wheels on Fire is Levon's book so it's his (very bitter) version of events. Even with that he never claimed to be the "main songwriter" as you put it.
Perhaps writer and writer/arranger and more terms can be added today. Sad the way the contracts were written those days.
Wheels on Fire is Levon's account, of course he will make it favorable to him. It is well documented that Levon did not write the songs, it he wrote one or two, or co wrote he was properly credited. It you want a balanced view read Barney Hoskyns biograhpy of The Band "Across the great divide". He is critical of Robbie, but fair, and he points out everyone's shortcomings.
Robbie did not kill The Band, drugs killed The Band. Robbie got to a point where he was exhausted from being the caretaker, 3 members were doing heroin, besided that Robbie by mid 1974 was married with 3 small children, he wanted more time with his family. He had been touring since he was 16. His son wrote on Robbie his Facebook page when Robbie turned 75, how happy he and his sisters were to have their dad back.
YOUNGINS- YOU HAVE SEEN AN ENTIRE BAND , CALLED "THE BAND" WIPED OUT (my guess) from CIGARETTES- twenty years short. If any was a BOOZER THAT WOULD NOT HELP> Twenty XTRA years CUT OFF!! You cheat youRSELF< FANS AND LOVEONES>
never thought they were that good
🤡
You must be teh only one.
Was so blessed to live a cple hours north of woodstock. Miss those rambles
