I got the Big Pink album in 68 and as Eric so eloquently said, "It changed my life"...now 54 years later here in the Virgin Islands with my own band, we still do "The Weight" in our set list...Classics are timeless. @@petersokol1603 Robbie did not give up money. He had all the writing credits of the songs and producer royalties. He wrote the lyrics mainly, but he did not arrange or organize the entire songs, but that didn't matter to him. He took sole credit for nearly every song by The Band. And he also had film royalties from Last Waltz, which was solely his idea, Levon and Rick really didn't wanna do it. When Garth had to declare Bankruptcy in the 80s, he sold his remaining shares in The Band to Robbie. SOLD THEM TO ROBBIE. A true brother would've helped him out. Especially Garth, the only one to not get into drugs and alcohol. But no, he bought the shares. So yeah, Robbie is suuuuuuuuuccccccchhhh a great brother. No

Funny how the Brits were so in love with American music, especially when the black influence of blues entered into rock. The British musicians derived their styles from Motown, blues, jazz, country, gospel and other American musical forms and then reflected them back with even greater success to the American audiences who already knew the originals. Think of the Rolling Stones, as well as Eric Clapton and the Beatles.

Sad part is there are no "neighbouring" rights in the U.S., the only country that only pays musicians for the work on a specific project and that's it.
ALL the members of the Band(songwriters excluded) would have received some extra scratch for what they contributed to that overall success.

Clapton saying "This is it, this is where music is supposed to have gone" is such a weird statement. "Supposed to" according to who or what? So many groups at the time were already pushing the envelope past old traditional roots music rehashes and doing something new and original. When prog rock came along a couple of years later it must have sent Eric into a tailspin.

No way. Don't buy Levon's line about the songs. Helping to arrange is not authorship. ROBBIE wrote the songs and he also guided a band of 3 junkies and Garth for years--before he gave it up. Can't blame him! As for $$, the three junkies put a ton of it up their noses and into their veins. They were beyond reckless.

Robbie the caretaker of 3 heroin addicts, they didn't show up for practice, several concerts had to be cancelled due to car crashes etc. Besides that, Robbie by the time of The Last Waltz, was married with 3 small children, he wanted to spend time with them. He was a hands on dad, and that combined with dealing with the addicts. writing the songs, and being the de facto leader left him totally exhausted. Having said that I love all of them (especially Robbie and Rick) they were very talented, and I'm of that generation so I get the drug use and am not being judgmental
