Seeing them and listening to them live reminded me of Steinbeck and Faulkner. The breath and depth of thought and feeling and Americana. Incredible. Feel terrible for young people today. This period of music early-mid 60’s through mid 70’s. There have been fantastic musicians after. But this time- Just special.

Funny you should mention that. Robbie, who wrote majority of the songs, dropped out of high school to play with Ronnie Hawkins. However, he continued to educate himself, and he read a lot, he mentions Faulkner as one of his favorite, and he wrote that he and Levon had a double date for a movie, they had picked a black and white movie, thinking it would be really boring, and the could make out instead. As he wrote the movie was The Grapes of Wrath, nothing could compete with Steinbecks epic story and Fonda's acting.

I had the pleasure of meeting Jim weider and attending many of his concerts. He trusted le to hold his 52 telecaster while he took naps. As great as a guitarist as he is nothing is better than the weight with the original band members.

I read Levon's book This wheels on fire ,when it first was published . He quite clearly states in it that the ' fued ' between him and Robbie was overblown to suit ' the book boys ?' We will never know the exact truth to the financial side of The Band ...will we ?
