One of my favorite brushes with fame was meeting Levon.. I was so excited I reached out to shake his hand and I simply said “I love you Levon!”. He looked at me, shook my hand and said “I love you too man!” Seriously one of the coolest moments of my life.. I’ll never forget it!
I met him in 1989 on a movie set in SC. I was an extra and stand-in for the bartender in the movie that became Staying Together. I was a fan and probably acted like a goofball. He smiled and was very friendly and patient with my questions.
I delivered to The Woodstock General Store.....used to have pull a loaded hand truck up the stairs open the doors and pull it to the back stack and do it again. Couple regulars there every morning would always say good morning hold the door and just be helpful.if they could.... Found out one morning as his funeral procession went thru town the one gentleman was Levon Helm...he always helped me and said thank you to me....I never knew who he was...
When i was a kid i hung out watchin the local blacksmith, hung out at the local garages and hot rodders. Then i used to sit with the gunsmith guys just soaking it all up. Young people don"t know what their missing by having their noses stuck to a phone/computer/game screen. Our old knowlagable people are fading away.
When I saw the Shooter, I thought the scene with Levon and Mark was one of the best in the entire movie. Levon's talent and his natural ability coupled with his line delivery really made the scene work. I knew it was Levon when I saw it and he was awesome!
Steven Hulbert that scene, and the scene in the gun store with Robert Duvall. Levon and Duvall are a star studded lineup on it's own lol It took me until yesterday to learn the Duvall also played Tom Hagen, and Levon was the drummer of the band, which is astounding considering I know those two things very well, or so I thought. The more you know...
As a musician, Levon was an inspiration in my younger days. After his cancer, I thought we would all be left to his early recordings. But his true spirit allowed him to grace us with two additional records prior to his passing. When I heard he was cast in the Shooter with Mark, I was excited to see him in public. This scene was the best in the film in my opinion.
I was born just a few miles from where Levon was from ( Marvell, Arkansas ) area and we were purty dam proud of the man ! I was around him some and very much enjoyed his company, hurt a lot when he passed. I'm an old man now but still think about him now and then. 👍
I've heard this song many times, but SEEING the passion and delivery behind Levon's vocals brought a tear to my eye. R.I.P. Levon Helm...you are in Glory now!
One of the best scenes in movie history. Levon was an awesome actor and an incredible musician. He had to be extremely passionate about his work to go through the brutal chemo and radiation treatments for the type of cancer he had and then come back and do the things he did before he died. I have the same kind of cancer and there are no words that can describe the pain you experience in your throat. Levon was one cool and tough ol' dude!
If you have the same kind of throat cancer, I am saying a prayer for you. On TH-cam, check out 3 Sandi Rogg videos concerning her treatment. It might help you.
Not even his best acting job. His work in Coal Miner's Daughter made people think seriously about giving him an academy award. Not that I care about that award but his acting in that film was stellar and it was his first ever acting job.
Loved him as Ana actor and musician, The Weight is one of my favorite songs. He had such a great presence and one of the coolest voice ever, "Still got the shovel!" I love it. RIP Levon, you are sorely missed.
I’m 51 which makes me too young to have witnessed Helm or The Band in person, but one need only listen to truly understand the blessed nature of the gift The Band left behind. Played a greatest hits cd while I traveled and wore it to uselessness! Great video and keep alive the spirit of this American treasure, Levon Helm!
I've have listened the the Bands music sporadically for 50 years, never appreciated it until I saw the doc Once were brothers. Since then I have gained a new appreciation for their music and Band members
@wavygr yes it was an underrated movie! He was the blind man that tried to get Tommy Lee Jones to shoot him! He said I'd do it myself but I don't want to offend God! Great movie!
I grew up in Woodstock and knew Levon pretty well when I was a kid and would visit with him when I went back. The world misses him every day and so do I. Thanks for sharing this video.
I just found this and have to say thank you so much for posting this! Watched it 5 times over. Love him and loved him in the movie but had no idea it was him.
Thank you for sharing the video tribute. Apart from his excellent performance in The Shooter I did not know who this man was. But thanks to you I have been introduced to some sweet music from this talented man. RIP Levon Helm.
The scene in Shooter where he says "still got the shovel" referring to buryin the real Kennedy assassins in west Texas was a real holy shit moment in that movie for me. Most people I know didn't realize what he meant by that. RIP Levon. One the great underrated actors in film.
Thanks for the history lesson his part was one of the best parts of the movie. It's an old man who's smarter than lot's of folks give him credit for. Knows a criminal would not come to his house asking questions. A true criminal would not even give him the time of day. One hell of an actor as so many have said he nail the part and one of the best parts if not the best part. What a man.
Met Mr. Helm at Bethel Performing Arts Center he had just finished a photo shoot. But still had time to shake our hands and sign an autograph. That was about 20 years ago. I'm still in awe.
God bless you always Rich. I watched this three times in a row. It got better each time seemed to me. I still find it hard to believe he's gone and it's been over 3 years. The world is definitely a far lesser place now without him in it. I survived my fight with cancer (2/3 of my colon along with a Stage 3-C tumor was removed in 2010 followed by 6 months of Chemo treatments. One each week.) I only wish he had too. Thanks for posting this.
Donald TittleJr Donald, having known Levon personally and watched with my own eyes his thoughts on being diagnosed with cancer. It was 1998, he got very hoarse and could not talk, a couple of weeks went by and it was not getting any better, they put a camera through his nose and found the cancer. The doctors advised a layrngectomy he did not want that, his first remarks were he always considered himself the drummer so loosing his voice was not a huge deal but he wanted to live and continue to play music. He went through 28 rounds of Chemo. His voice was a whisper or raspy sound but slowly it came back to about 80%. He did continue to play the drums the entire time he was getting treatment and after he returned home from having the tumor cut out. He went on the make 3 albums, and won three Grammy Awards for all three albums, and also presented a lifetime achievement award from all of his years in the band. Robbie Robertson screwed Levon and other band members out of tons of money in the song writing credits. Most all of the songs the band played/recorded were songs that Levon told of his child hood. I have nothing against Canadians, but how could a Canadian (Robbie Robertson) even think of any type of songs that are clearly about the south. Robbie showed up as Levon was in his last few days of his life, the cancer came back, the man that screwed Levon out of probably millions of dollars that was due Levon, that cad showed up, what for, Levon has hated him for years. I do think Levon was an amazing drummer, fine mandolin player, and a fair guitar player, I thank God for the extended chance for people to thank Levon, pay tribute to him and show their love to him. Check out the newer songs, they are amazing in their own right, If you want to make a purchase to help his family go to levonhelm.com and I would suggest getting the videography Aint in it for my health, and Ramble at the Ryman, two amazing performances.
Bravo, thank you so much for sharing. Levon brought so much power and mystery to that scene. Now that I know the amazing man behind it only makes it better.
Levon Helm is/was one of my favorite human beings, With appreciation, I must point out that "The Last Waltz "was made by Scorcese in 1976. It was Thanksgiving and the final concert for "The Band." It was filmed live at one of the West Coast halls owned by Fillmore. Musical guests covered a broad spectrum but were mostly "the greats" in their genre`. Helm was the real glue of the group, with Robbie Robertson as the frontman, playing lead guitar, Other members, every one crucial to their unique sound, were, Rick Danko, Richard Manuel and Garth Hudson. Bass, keyboards, and cut-down Hammond B-3 with Leslies and reeds, respectively.
I actually looked up this amazing scene to learn who this actor was because his little character role is a true work of art. This is what ever actor would aspire to achieve. And the singing too is incredible. He was a very special man, and rhat was apparent even in his last days to someone who had never seen his work. This tribute to Levon Helm is well deserved.
Thank you. Thank you for taking me on a solid journey. Loved every second of this. I have not seen this level of quality of content in ages. It has everything, and I get some new music I didn't even know was available. Thanks again.
Levon Helm is a National Treasure as far as I'm concerned. I loved the tribute Rich Mullinax. You covered most everything in his movie roll parts except in Coal Miners Daughter & The Right Stuff. Did you know the great classic song "Levon" written & sang by the fabulous Elton John was named after Levon Helm? R.I.P. Levon.
According to Gus Dudgeon, Bernie Taupin, who wrote the lyrics for Levon, was inspired by The Band’s co-founder, drummer, and singer Levon Helm to name the title character after him. The Band was apparently John’s and Taupin’s favorite group in those days. However, in 2013, Bernie Taupin said that the song is unrelated to Levon Helm.
When I saw the Shooter I had no idea that the drummer for The Band was the same as the actor in the movie. I had the 8-track "Big Pink" when it came out, and listened to it till it fell apart. Oddly enough, over all the years of listening to The Band music, I had never seen pictures of any of the members, and I still haven't seen the movie "The Last Waltz". So, I was amazed when I learned (only last year) that Levon Helm was the actor in the Shooter.
Love that voice he should have been a college proffeser i could listen to him talk for hours . Hes got that southern twang in his voice . Hay Jack' got a stick of Behmens ? pay you back later , fare enough !
Just plain awesome! I love Levon with that big voice of his. The Band and their music is part of my life. Music can bring back memories. I am thankful for that.
Thank you for this vid. I saw Levon, right after "electric dirt" was finished. He was a good man with a huge heart! R.I.P Levon,,, you gave so much, yet asked for little. I miss you my friend!
Saw The Band in 1986 at a great small club in Providence RI called Lupo's Heatbreak Hotel. Stood right in front of Rick Danko. Got Levon to sign my shirt. Have it framed in my man cave. Richard Manuel killed himself 2 weeks later. Still saddens me today
Timeless. Nothing in any other music genre today comes close. Listening to this music keeps me grounded, not in the past, but allows me to ignore most of the stuff out there.
I own 'Shooter' and his brief appearance is truly a highlight for me despite my 51 year old brain being completely oblivious of his background which this channel has done a wonderful job of providing for us who know the value of a talented artist. Too few and too far apart those special individuals are these days. Thank u sir for enlightening me. I shall now seek out more clips of this diamond in our rough!!
I got to see Levon play one of his last shows in September of 2011, he died the following April. Even though he was ill, he was a true professional and gave an amazing show. RIP Levon ❤
Rich thank you for throwing in the "Last Waltz" footage. I was 17 when the film was made, into punk, but friends made me listen to the Band. Have to say it gives me goosebumps to hear this song today.
I had to work to see thru the leakage of my eyes. "See the man with Stage Fright....." For a kid from Wyoming, The Band was a godsend, Levon Helm was like a God in the late 70's. Happy to say he still is!
Man, rewatching Shooter brought me here. Levon MADE that movie, that is the most mentor character in the whole film. I BELIEVED he buried them boys from the grassy knoll... Scared the piss out if me cos I BELIEVE he STILL GOT THE SHOVEL. What a swan song to be remembered in. I'ma buy this DVD. RIP good Sir. 😎
@Damon McGeachy I had to look at cops of the Right Stuff to see who he played. He was Chuck Yeager's buddy who was always "loaning him a stick of Beaman's gum."
What an awesome story you contributed here. Shooter is one of my favs and the scene with Levon talking with whalberg was one of the memorable scenes. I knew briefly of Levon Helm as a singer but didnt realize the depth of talent he had. What a great story he played out for others to enjoy. I now have a new found knowledge for this man. Thanks for connecting the dots for me!
Holy shit!! I would have never known this. I've been haunted in a way by that song for decades. HE was the Band to me!!And I loved him in the Shooter. I would never in a million years have made the connection that that was the same man unless I stumbled across this video. What a great story and a talented person. Thanks for the video!
His Last Waltz performance on this song is considered one of the best live rock vocals in history.
One of my favorite brushes with fame was meeting Levon.. I was so excited I reached out to shake his hand and I simply said “I love you Levon!”. He looked at me, shook my hand and said “I love you too man!” Seriously one of the coolest moments of my life.. I’ll never forget it!

Had this happen with Mavis staples recently!
"Still got the shovel." Best line ever delivered.
I don't care what folks say; he was the best part of that movie! He stole every moment in those scenes.
Yes he did!
"They also said that artificial sweeteners are safe. WMDs were in Iraq and Anna Nicole married for love", the best scene of the whole film.
I thought the very same thing. It is one of my favorites! Levon was amazing!!.,
"Just when you think you've learned it all; you find that you know nothing at all"
Great story!
So true I didn't even know he was a drummer in a band until I just watched this and I just came from another scene in the movie shooter. Incredible.
When i was a kid i hung out watchin the local blacksmith, hung out at the local garages and hot rodders. Then i used to sit with the gunsmith guys just soaking it all up.

Amen brother!
Coalminers Daughter, The Right Stuff, The Last Waltz, Shooter, or a jukebox in a dive bar on the Bowery, Levon is everywhere. A national treasure!
RIP
Levon played Ridley in the Right Stuff
Levon Helm, one of the greatest singers in rock history, and he did it all while playing drums, a notoriously difficult feat in and of itself.
No…it’s not difficult…easier to sing as a drummer than it is on guitar…bass…keyboards…violin…grow up.
In his book he said it was laughter that brought back his voice, someone we could learn from. Great Man.

I won't say good-bye to Levon, just fare thee well.
I met him years ago, one of the highlights of my life....have always loved him and The Band
without question you are correct, their music has touched and is ingrained in generations.
Thanks for posting this. I loved him in The Shooter, but I never knew he was such an accomplished musician.
Engage TransCorp your missing out , watch THE LAST WALTZ
Still Missin' You Levon
Thank you for this vid. I saw Levon, right after "electric dirt" was finished. He was a good man with a huge heart! R.I.P Levon,,, you gave so much, yet asked for little. I miss you my friend!
Saw The Band in 1986 at a great small club in Providence RI called Lupo's Heatbreak Hotel. Stood right in front of Rick Danko. Got Levon to sign my shirt. Have it framed in my man cave. Richard Manuel killed himself 2 weeks later. Still saddens me today
Me to a grown up in the wrong generation such great talent thank you sir
Thank you for sharing this clip. It took me 7 or 8 times watching “The Shooter” before I realized it was Levon....and I was looking for him!
drummer singer actor gifted man
beboploo And wise, kind heart!!
Timeless. Nothing in any other music genre today comes close. Listening to this music keeps me grounded, not in the past, but allows me to ignore most of the stuff out there.
Thanks for sharing--Loved the Band--Music from Big Pink!!!
Lucky are those see him alive. The very best artist ever!!! Immortal will be forever.......
Atanas G. double door in Charlotte..with his Daughter.. Aweee!
I got to see him, Garth, and Ricky when they toured with Ringo and the all star band in 1989.
NICE!
I got to see Levon play one of his last shows in September of 2011, he died the following April. Even though he was ill, he was a true professional and gave an amazing show. RIP Levon ❤
Well done Rich. The Last Waltz was amazing. RIP Levon
Rich thank you for throwing in the "Last Waltz" footage. I was 17 when the film was made, into punk, but friends made me listen to the Band. Have to say it gives me goosebumps to hear this song today.
RIP Levon, Richard Manuel and Rick Danko.
Thank you for posting!
I had to work to see thru the leakage of my eyes. "See the man with Stage Fright....." For a kid from Wyoming, The Band was a godsend, Levon Helm was like a God in the late 70's. Happy to say he still is!
Thanks for sharing. This was a real treat for me as I really liked The Band.
Love his part in Shooter. One of my favorites. Just watched it yesterday
RIP. Thank you for making our lives better with your music
Wow so interesting, one of my all time favorite songs ever.
This by far is the best TH-cam video I've ever seen. Thank you.
I never knew this about him. This is so neat.
I remember that scene but at the time I didn't realize it was Levon.
A poet and author of gentlemen, all around example of humanity.
Holy shit!! I would have never known this. I've been haunted in a way by that song for decades. HE was the Band to me!!And I loved him in the Shooter. I would never in a million years have made the connection that that was the same man unless I stumbled across this video. What a great story and a talented person. Thanks for the video!
The pride of Elaine Arkansas and a Southern Icon.
Love that man Bless him and Shooter was one of my favorite alone with Four Brothers
This is one of my Favorite You Tube Videos to watch...
