    I think it's caused by the left cylinder being so close to that area. hen it gets hot and then cools down, it pulls away from the sump cover. There is a new, higher torque for the bolts. It is 325 lb-in. I'm going to also use Permatex spray sealer, or Right Stuff.

    I believe Briggs did update that sump gasket with a heavier one now. I don't know if it has a new part number.

    This is really interesting and useful information as we have one of these engines to look at soon, thanks. Sorry for being late to watch you videos we have had some distractions recently.

    That's good to know. Odd problem, I wonder if the crankcase is creating a vacuum and pulling the gasket in?

      That's probably what's happening. Good to hear from you sir

      That is what came to mind. To keep it from happening again , I would apply high tach permatex , a thick film and let it set up then apply the new gasket. To use just a coat of oil may allow it to suck in again , also there sould be a breather to equalize pressure, just thinking out loud. Thank you guys. (Pcv. or..ncv , negative pressure.)
      Interesting..

    Have you ever tried Permatex spray sealant as an easy fix for the sump gasket leak?

    • @davessmallenginerevival2847
      @davessmallenginerevival2847  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No. Might be worth a shot but sure it would work

      Excellent idea, even if it's just a temporary fix to get through the season.

  • @donf3739

    I wonder if that Carquest filter might be more restrictive than the B&S filter, and be causing a greater-than-normal vacuum in the crankcase.
    I've been using Frams for a few years and have encountered a leak in that area, although I haven't found it yet. I did replace the dipstick tube seal, but there is still a leak somewhere.

    • @davessmallenginerevival2847
      @davessmallenginerevival2847  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      No that's not why. I've seen this a few times before all with different filters. I will say that myself have been using car quest filters for years on my own equipment and never had an issue. Fram is the worst possible filter you could use if you look at the studies

      My 26hp V twin leaks. Hard to see where it comes from but this is my guess. Nice to see what's going on with the gasket. Any upgraded gaskets out there?

    • @davessmallenginerevival2847
      @davessmallenginerevival2847  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @toddsb07 not that I know of. Can't remember if I said in the video or not but I also use a little gasket sealer called the right stuff, it's kind of expensive but it works very well. I have another one in the shop to do now

    • @donf3739

    Working on a 23 hp, sump separates about 3/8" then stops and will not come off the crank. Any ideas? Seems to be alot of play in the crank as the crank moves with the sump.

      @@davessmallenginerevival2847 haha! All good buddy! Yes. Everything is off that needs to come off from what I’ve seen in numerous videos. The sump separates from the block but then stops like something is hung up inside. The engine was leaking pretty bad around the sump then started leaking around the crank seal. I don’t know if something happened internally that maybe galled up the hole the crank comes out or what but the damn thing won’t come away from the block but about 1/2” then its stuck. Idk if it’s normal for the crank to move that far with the sump unbolted or not but the crank shaft moves freely to the point the sump will no longer budge. I didn’t check the end play before unbolting the sump but the end play seems excessive. I’ve wrenched on a lot of stuff but don’t know much about these motors and I’m striking out online. I appreciate the input! 🍻
