    This is by far the most helpful video (or post) I've seen on striper fishing (and salt fishing in general). I grew up inland and have been trying to break into saltwater on my own without anyone to teach me anything. I spend hours online studying, hours on the water doing the old "college try" and a lot of money. This saves me so much.... Seriously, the reason behind the setups alone is amazing.

      @@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS What action are you using for the Striper Stealth? Medium-Heavy seems to be the most popular. I'll be mostly using mackerel and bunker. (Def subscribing!)

    • @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS
      @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Justin Fehl These all have a slow action soft tip so you really can’t go wrong as far as hooking the fish with a circle hook. I Love The MH because I can use it for every size fish. I recommend it the most so they are always struggling to keep them in stock. If you rarely see fish over 20lbs the MED power is great, but if you rarely see fish less than 10lbs you’ll want something heavier

    • @mnefaces

      @@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS awesome. I bought 1 MH from a shop down in TN, west of Knoxville, but that was the last one. Can't find them anywhere. Do you have any other recommendations for this kind of rod? I live-line mackerel out of the mouth of the Merrimack River up here in MA. The only rod I can find in stores that has a slower action for circle hooks and live bait was an Ugly Stick Big Water, medium power, moderate action. Will that work? Any other recommendations?

Which is better suited for getting 4-6 oz down to open bottom quickly in current but beefy enough to muscle up large stripers? Does either one have a better free spool? Thanks.

    I have been using the Penn Spinfisher and Slammer reels for casting and some jigging. I have a couple Penn Slammer 7500 with 80 lb braid that I use for shark and tarpon. This Spring I wanted to get a couple more set-ups for shark and tarpon in case I got a reel ripped apart during my trip to Fl Keys. With talking to the guys at tackle shop, I tried the new Daiwa BG 6500 and like them. The BG holds about as much 80 lb braid as the Penn 7500 and it is smoother than the Penn. I fished with the BG reels exclusively while on the trip, caught a few tarpon in the 60-80lb range and several sharks with many of them 100lb+. The reels held up great. Planning on trying a couple BG 3000 for inshore fishing

But I am also going to check out the spinning reels you use. Since you been in the game for a long time. Would you any opinions on how I could or might be able to get better free spool out of my seigler sm. I can get a true free spool if i take the magnet completely out, but then makes it difficult to not birds nest. I'm throwing small live bait against hydroelectric dams in turbulent water. I say small live bait because our shad doesn't get that big where im at. Like 4inches is the best we got.

    Hey Mike! I Have a question about what reel would be the best for me. I fish off of a small dock in Connecticut where catching 30-60lb bass is possible. Lots of structure and no room for error once hooked into one of the larger sized fish as you can imagine. Im looking for a reel that can put a stop to a big fish around heavy structure. Forgot to mention I hook these fish by chunking Scup. Any recommendations for what accurate reel would be best in that scenario? Thanks for the help and love the videos! 😆

    • @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS

      Thanks brother!!! Definitely an Accurate Valiant. They make the only reels in the world with 2 drag systems. Plates and carbon washers on BOTH sides of the spool. Lots of reels have stopping power but twin drag has the SMOOTHEST stopping power because of the even squeeze on the spool versus pushing on one side. Valiant 400.

      We pretty much stick to Stripers simply because they can be caught so many different ways in so many different places in fresh and salt. From mountain lakes and rivers in Tennessee and Kentucky to muddy creeks in Virginia to the wide open ocean, sounds and bays. We have caught Stripers in 14 states on over 60 bodies of water, 12 months a year. They are truly an amazing fish. With that being said, we WILL be shooting some video on other species soon 😁.
      What would you like to see? Will probably do some Redfish next.

    Hi Mike, great video. Can you explain what you mean by top shot (is a leader by a different name?) Also, if I'm throwing plugs from shore (salt water) 6"-7" pencils and or a metal in the 2oz department is a whipier 8'a good option for distance? I'm currently using a 10'6" Penn 8000 combo and it's over sized for the job. Thanks!

    • @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS
      @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks brother!! Yep, a top shot is really just another name for a leader, but it’s typically a lot longer and attached with a knot and not a swivel. I will vary lengths from 10 feet to 100 feet but usually 30 feet max. The softer the rod the less casting distance you will get, everything is a compromise 😁😁. I like an 8’ rod.

  • @Stonehorn
    @Stonehorn ปีที่แล้ว

    Im partial to my tranx on my st croix muskie rod. I have about a dozen different rods for different purposes, but for swimbait, the tranx/muskie rod is my go to. But i have multiple Accurate’s, including two Fury’s, a valiant, and a boss extreme, as well as a host of Penns for the clients who hire me, as many/most don’t bring rods.
    But for smooth casting/retrieval, even with giant Stripers, the Tranx just works.
    I agree with not going gor high gear versions though. Save that for faster fish. The striper is powerful, but not fast like Mahi or yellowfin

    Hey Mike. I want to purchase the fury. But I'm not sure should I get the narrow. I have been watching lots of your videos and I noticed some of your fishing partners are pretty big guys. Is there a reason why you go with the stealth. And do you find it those guys have problems with big hands with the stealth real. Or should I just get the regular and not the stealth.

  • @petebodnar8165
    @petebodnar8165 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey Mike, Awesome Video! Quick question. You, and many others talk about soft tip rods constantly (for stripers to not feel that tension etc.). I downline on lanier with a 1.5 ounce weight tied to about a 5ft floro leader with a shad or herring, would they not just feel the 1.5 ounce weight before feeling the soft tip rod? Im deciding on the ML or MH striper rod. Ive caught a few stripers on the ML and just got the MHs that I was going to try out. TIA for the info!

    • @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS
      @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS  ปีที่แล้ว

      Excellent question!! Yes, they will feel the lead eventually if the fish swims upward, especially, but I feel that the heat of the attack and the Stripers coming up from below and heading back downwards, the soft rod gives the fish an extra second or 2 to turn the baited circle hook down it’s throat right before the fish can feel any strong resistance. I hope that makes sense brother.
      Thanks for your support as always!!!

  • @magicdragon375
    @magicdragon375 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great video. Best one out there for this information. Are the fast actions on the striper stealth rods too forgiving when trolling? Will the tip be bent over when trolling and if so how much bend is acceptable?

    • @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS
      @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good question. While at trolling speed I want to see the tip flex throughout speed changes , direction changes, and I want to see it react to the action of the bait trolled. For instance, while I troll Bunker spoons I want to see the tip bounce, if I troll big lipped plugs I want to see the wobble in the tip. If the rod just bends clean to the backbone 90% of the time I need a heavier rod. If it’s so heavy that a decent fish doesn’t take it to the backbone I need to go lighter. Those are my personal preferences. I would certainly rather be a little too light than too heavy. A big fish can put a lot of stress when it first smacks that bait at 3mph and then turns completely around. I want a good shock absorber when that happens, it’s even more important if you’re using braid. Also. Keep in mind, the rod can be bent all the way down to the midway point on composite rods like the Striper Stealth and STILL have good tip action. Hope this help. 👍👍

      Fins and Finds The 500 will hold a lot of line, way more than I ever need. I like the 400 regular because they cast better than the 500. If you’re not casting and don’t mind the extra weight of the 500 you can go with either.

      The SS rods are really designed for live and cut bait, that’s why the tips are super soft. The newer rods have indestructible tips that are even softer. Although they aren’t trolling rods I have pulled Mojo rigs on them plenty of times so I wouldn’t worry about them holding up. They will definitely bend like crazy though. 😁. Hey buddy what’s you opinion on barometric pressure and fishing. I’ll start off saying that when I was young we just used corn or worms for bluegill/sunfish and you can catch them usually all day without fail. Anyway as I got older and fished for ‘big’ bass lol! everyone said they play off the barometer and almost always falling is when you will catch. Now I know tidal waters play with different variables greatly but what is your opinion on barometric pressure and fishing? I’ve never seen a true correlation in this and never seen anyone talk about it on their channel in regards to low/high/falling/rising pressure. I’d appreciate any info you have!

    • @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS
      @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good question. I absolutely believe in the affect of pressure on feeding reactions. I was a Trout guide when I was a kid. Deep water lakes. In the summer, some afternoons after 4pm the fishing would completely shut off, when it did, I could tell you a storm was coming like clockwork. My customers would roll their eyes and we would get off the lake and the sky would go dark an hour later. This was way before the internet and smart phones. Stripers behave a lot like those Trout. Steadily falling barometer has been money for me. 👍👍

    Hey Mike, awesome video as always! My dad, uncle, and I are researching boat rods and reels to get for our family boat. We are interested in left handed reels and want to buy 4 of the same size for fluke jigging and then 4 of the same size for drifting eels. Through our research, we have narrowed it down to Accurate, Seigler, and Avet - of course I know your opinion on Accurate's after watching this video and own a couple avets so I already have my own opinion on them, but do you have an opinion on the Seigler reels? Seigler interests us because of their lifelong guarantee and warranty. On another note, what size striper stealth do you think is appropriate for drifting eels in Montauk - maybe medium heavy or heavy?

    • @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS
      @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      For the rods I love the Striper Stealth MH
      My only complaint about Seigler is the lack of bearings in the knobs. I’m not sure about their anti reverse systems, but I’m guessing they are similar to Avet so it’s a basic dawg and Pawl. Accurate use real Anti-reverse bearings to there is zero back play. That’s a huge upgrade.

    Hi Mike, I'd love to see a video showing how you guys set your lever drags and how you use them during a fight. do you ever find you have to use the lever to lessen the drag during a fight? Or, do you ever have to go beyond the strike setting for more drag? I'm looking to switch from star drags to lever because I cannot find a star drag that will function to my liking. I've used diawa sealines, Okuma coldwaters, and Penn star drags and they all do the same thing: when I set my drag so it pays out at the backbone, I can not reel the line - nothing happens when I turn the handle. I have to tighten down the star drag ALOT before it'll reel line. I'm hoping lever drags won't do that. Thanks for all the videos!

    • @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS
      @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS  ปีที่แล้ว

      That issue will be the same for a lever drag. You are probably using high speed reels. You can’t eliminate that 100% when using lighter drag settings, but lower geared reels make a big difference. We only use low geared reels unless we are jigging. You can also use higher drag settings, but you would then need stiffer rods and that comes at a cost, and I would not recommend that. You will have to pump and take to get line in. That is totally normal with lighter tackle. If you ever watch Wicked Tuna you will see them grabbing the line with their hand to pull line to the reel. That is because the line won’t come in if they simply cranked. They can’t pump the rod because it’s in the rod holder. 2 speed reels have extremely low gears on the slow speed 3:1, they almost eliminate the need to pump altogether. To answer your question, we almost never have to loosen the drag, but often have to tighten it. I set the reel up so the lever is in the strike position at the drag I want for fighting the fish. Then I put it in the rod holder and back the drag off by about 20% so you can get the rod out of the rod holder fast under a full load. Then we will tighten it by moving it back up to the “strike” stop. Hope this helps.

      @@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS I am blown away by how quick you answered that comment. That's so cool. I've been trying to pay more attention to how you guys battle the fish in the videos and it doesn't seem like you have to pump and take all that much on your levers. I'm thinking you might be using heavier drag than I do which would allow the reel to work nicely. I'll be sure to shop a lower gear ratio lever drag to help with this issue. Thank you!

      That’s awesome brother!! I love hearing that! You can absolutely get reels that behave like mine for that price. The Accurate Fury is around $250, get the LOW gear reels. The lower gear gives you lots of power so you don’t have to pump the rod nearly as much even with lighter drag settings. The low gear is the trick. Out of curiosity I asked dozens of people what gear reels they use and 100% use high gear reels, that’s why you have to pump the rod. The extra heavy would not be good for what you want to do, the extra stiffness would make fish drop the baits too soon because they feel the rod. The MH are by far my favorite for everything from freshwater down line 10lb fish to the 50-60lbers in the salt. They are perfect. I know Catch the Fever has been out of them but they’re on the way and should be available in 9 days. Definitely worth the weight.

      I use low gear in all single speed reels. Way more powerful. Don’t need to pump to take line. The Valiants are incredible, but to be honest, we would still catch every fish with the Fury. The Valiants have the same amount of bearings and same materials as the Fury. They are way lighter due to the comical design without losing strength and have twin drag. Drag in both sides of the spool. You really won’t see a performance difference between the Fury and the Valiant until you are catching Tuna in the 50lb plus range. I can cast a 3/8 oz bait with 80lb braid on a reel that only weighs 10 oz. It would take a much larger and heavy surf cast size spinning reel to do that, and it still wouldn’t cast as far. I would go with the Fury unless you like the switch for free spool. You get a little more cast control with the Tern, but that Fury is a beast. I love lever drag. Unfortunately I don’t know the names of any two piece rods, but for live and cut bait you need a composite rod like S glass. The softer the tip the better. Graphite with fast tips are bad news unless casting artificials. Go with a slow action. Hope this helps! 👍👍

      Mike Smedley thanks! I’m going to try my best I can to get the stealth. Most likely will fit in the minivan.

    any budget conventional reels that cast far for under 100$

    • @Stonehorn
      @Stonehorn ปีที่แล้ว

      You do you, you get what you pay for, and 100$ reels have tons of draw backs, the biggest being they don’t llast in the salt.

      I experiment all the time with less expensive stuff because I’d like to be able to recommend affordable alternatives to the highest end gear I use. I tried a Kast King CRIXUS bait caster for around $50. They sent me a few reels to try. That reel did well. I’m posting a complete video soon. It’s not a reel that you will use for 20 years, but for $50 I don’t see why it won’t catch fish for a bunch of seasons.

    I didn’t want to leave this comment on a new video. Didn’t want the world to know 😂 . head to eBay and type in “(4) Accurate tern 500 Reel” yep 4 used one time bid is at $535 he also has 3 terms for sale. With braid. Didn’t know if you needed some more reels...

    I paid $225 for my Seigler. Is the Accurate a better option?

      Yes. 😁😁

      The Accurate Valiants are their best reels, very light. Very powerful. Very reliable. Highest quality bearings and twin drag. The only reels bin the world with twin drag. The Fury is around the same price as the Seigler. The Seiglers I looked at had aluminum knobs with NO bearings at all in them. I think that’s a mistake. Accurate aluminum knobs have two bearings in them. The same bearings they use in satellites that don’t need maintenance. I’ve been beating the life out of them since 2005. They are heavy weight champs brother.

    Btw avet uses dual drags in it's raptors

    • @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS
      @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Avet uses a single drag system with an additional disc in the Raptor. They call it a double “disc” drag. Lots of reel companies do something similar. Accurate actually has 2 complete and separate drag systems, one on either side of the spool.

    Ok Bronx boy here please explain "casting a country mile"

    • @travispratt6327
      @travispratt6327 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Maine boy here, a country mile just means an exaggerated mile. I always thought of it as a mile through woods and tough terrain is a hell of a lot “longer” than a mile down a paved road, so a country mile is just a long ways.

    • @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS
      @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      In the NC country everything is far away. Just wide open Tobacco farms. A few miles down the road can end up being 10 miles in reality.

    Simply put, if you're after a huge fish, you need a conventional reel. The torque will save your day. If you're after small fish where torque is not needed as much you can get away with a spinning combo. Stripers can get pretty hefty so conventional is a must. I'm an astronaut. How do I know as much about fishing???🤔

    • @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS
      @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree, but also add that even medium sized fish can use the advantages where structure is tight and you need stopping power.
