Hi Heath, That's a good video on why to use certain equipment. Rod size, line rating, power and action all have a range of use for certain types of fishing. I remember when didn't know what rod to buy and how to chose one. You just saved a lot of fishermen from purchasing the wrong rods and reels. Thank you for sharing your experiences. Hi Heath, We are all fine and I hope your family are well. The "when and why" is what made your video so important. Any rod can catch a fish but the right rod can help you catch more fish and fight the fish properly. The action of the lure, the correct line test, the ability to fight the fish all depend on the rod. The most important function of the reel is the drag. The reel has to be in balance with the rod and line. You did a great job of explaining the relationship between the rod, reel and line. That was really important in selecting the right tackle. Hi Heath, another informative helpful episode. Seems like you are quite comfortable with not using the heavier pound test for most of your fishing. I think having a 30 lb braid with a good length of mono leader might be a good happy medium for trolling and jigging a medium size spinning reel. A lot of people have mislead me into putting 65 lb braid on my spinning reel but it gives you much less line capacity and most of the fish are not 65 lbs

The concept I go by, is the thinner the line, the less drag through the water you get, which gives you a more vertical presentation. I go heavy braid, 80 lb test, on my planer trolling set up. but the jigging I try to keep it light. Plus, like you said, the capacity limitations. Awesome video. I noticed that you just have braid on the slow jig rod and planer rod, why is that? Thanks

My slow pitch rod has braid on it, because mono has to much elasticity to make a jig react properly under the pressure of water. All jigging is done with braid. The planer rod has braid because it makes the planer react and troll more properly than mono... mono stretches out and can actually break under the pressure that a planer puts on it, however, you can use mono to troll a planer. A planer is more easily set when using mono, but that's the only positive aspect. Hope this helps. Thanks again for everything. Tight lines & take care ;)
Just picked up a 7ft h penn fierce 3 rod and reel combo do you think this is good for deep sea fishing ? Rock fish, yellow tail, Snappers, sculpin?

The Fierce spinning series is definitely some great equipment that can take a good beating. Many charter boat captains in my area rely on Penn Fierce spinners. I would say you are in good hands with your selection. On the reel there should be a line selection guide, personally I would go with the lightest line possible for that more stealthy natural looking approach. Congrats on the new setup. Hope this helps. what spinning rod could you recommend for light bottom fishing. I grew up using a spinning reel and have zero knowledge on conventionals. something durable and budget friendly would be nice.
My favorite is a Penn spinfisher 5500... it is sold as a combo rod & reel at bass pro.
Great video Heath, I was hoping for some advice for someone just starting to gear up with a conventional reel to hopefully bottom fish for grouper and troll for kings. Any suggestions? Would you choose a two speed reel? I can't afford the $700 reels. Maybe a used one but if you can suggest something out there it would be great. Can you also suggest a good rod for trolling kings that I can use a bridle system? Thank you!
Check out the Penn squall series... both affordable and durable enough for planer trolling and dropping down for grouper. I stay away from.2 speed reels, just another thing to break.

Not sure how deep you're trying to go... but here's my favorite set up. It's in the video too.
Reel:
Penn spin fisher 5500
Rod:

I greatly appreciate it. I would assume approximately 30’ft. to 40’ft. I recently went on a charter trip and a few people brought their own gear using spinning reels. I know they were running 20 something pound test line. I just didn’t ask what type rod and reel they were using. However, the ones who brought their own gear slayed it as they were casting away from the boat vs using conventional and simply dropping over the boat.
I fished from drift boats for years. You don't really have to cast out. Best advice I can give is to constantly let out line... don't stopping letting out line until the fish strikes and yanks the line out from your hand. Then slam the bail shut to set the hook. Don't yank back. Let the mono Stretch and do it's job. That combo set up I told you is perfect for what you're trying to do. 12 lb test main line with 20 lb fluorocarbon leader...good luck

What size line do I use when I go deep sea fishing off a charter boat
Thanks a million for watching and asking a great question. I fished on drift boats for years, and your answer depends on what rod & reel setup you are using. For example, if you are using a small snapper spinner, like a Penn Spinfisher 5500, you'll want to go with 12 lb test monofilament main line and 20 lb test fluorocarbon leader. If you're using a bigger spinner, like a Penn Spinfisher 8500, you'll want to go with 20 lb test monofilament main line and again you can use 20 lb test fluorocarbon leader, or if you are sketched out about the light leader, you can up it to 40 lb test. Lastly, if you are using a small conventional reel like an Accurate, Avet, or Penn LT, I would go with 20 lb test monofilament main line, and 20 lb test Fluorocarbon leader, again you can up that leader to 40 if you want. Personally, I go with the lightest leader possible to give the most natural stealthy presentation. You'll want to avoid using braid on a drift boat. If you get in a tangle, which happens sometimes on drift boats, and you are using braid, the mates won't be able to untangle it and they will cut it. Using mono and getting tangled up, the mates are usually pretty good and quick at clearing it out. Hope this helps. Good luck out there. Tight lines & take care ;)

So I’m going out fishing off the coast for the first time and I have a bunch of freshwater rods designed for big catfish and stripers and I was wondering if that would work fine or should I get specific saltwater gear?

I wouldn't go reinventing the wheel until you're completely committed to it then you can hone in on what type of fishing you like to do and focus more on getting gear specified for those specific tactics. Thanks a million for watching and asking some great questions. Personally I've done quite a bit of fishing from drift boats in my life. When I would fish from them I would bring a couple of different setups. The first would be a 12 to 20 lb class spinning reel. Then I would bring two setups of the 15 to 30 lb class. One would be a spinning rig and the other one would be a conventional setup. All three of these are what you can use to let out line as the boat drifts away from its initial spot and get you into the hook up and place enough shock absorbency on the fish for when it strikes and starts at the initial run. All three of these setups are in the video that you're watching and asking the questions about. They are the Penn spinfisher 5500. The Penn spinfisher 8500.… And Penn international 12H. I live a few minutes from ocean and a lot of rock was going to swim out or paddle out drop a line with a few hooks and leave over night. Maybe not your thing but what are your thoughts?
What do you think of the Newell reels?
Haven't used them... so I couldn't give a true answer. They have the classic old school look to them and the star drag is nice. So I would say if you're into them, go for it.
Please help me and tell me what I need for Florida shark fishing what lb line and top shot I'm thinking a rod with a adjustable but and a 50 wide reel dont know what kind eveyone tells me diferent I'm confused
So I'm not really a shark angler. However I have caught them. A 50 is good.. I'd stick with Penn or Shimano. You can go with 85 lb braid or 100 lb mono main line. Use a 300 lb mono leader. Then I'd say use at least 270 lb multi strand cable with a 12-0 circle hook. The rod needs to be something beefy. 80 to 100 lb class. Hope this helps

This episode was really meant to showcase the setups that I most often use during the bi-weekly episodes that I upload. Regardless, Shimano has developed thier reels over the past several decades, and they have a great product. I'm a fairly budget minded angler, as I am by no means wealthy, so I can't say I would purchase a Stella new. But, I can profess that when it comes to fishing and purchasing gear... You are making an investment, and you do get what you pay for. So, I would say, for anyone considering a Stella, if you like it and it's in your price range, go for it. Hope this helps. @@SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing Yes, I heard about them as big as a boat per divers....If I catch one I'll have my .22 pistol and hammer them in the head if I get him to shore...I'll pay the fine for firing inside the city limits...if needed, but no way I'll try to pull him onto the bank...the liine will snap...I think I'll go to Bass Pro tomorrow and look around...see what catches my eye....thanks for the response...I wonder whats in the Mississippi river...I have no idea...that damn river is about 1 mile wide...I'm not joking...I-40 river bridge...I've driven over it many times...it's quite scary...dull brown water...
@@dennispfeifer7788 we’ve caught big cats on trot line and hoop nets before around 100#… never ate them, just cut them loose. For one thing, I’ve never had the desire to try and skin and filet those monsters, nor would the meat be worth the effort anyway. They taste best in the 2 to 5 pound range anyway. Another thing is consider how old they have to be to get that big…. I don’t have the right to kill one imho.
Does your choice of line Hold up in the Northeast, say Maine. Nova Scotia, or maybe even Green Land or the Bering Strait ??? I'm not commenting I'm asking because I've been Labeled Epicurious...
Let me start by answering your question. FIshing line works regardless of where or conditions, such as temperature. It's what you're fishing for that matters, not where you are fishing. Next, I'm not quite sure you're using the word epicurious properly. Thanks for watching. Tight lines ;)

Can king fish cut leader?
Thanks a million for watching and asking a great question. Yes kingfish can cut your leader, especially if it's mono. Your best bet against a cut off is wire leader... even then, sometimes they hit it just right and it kinks and snaps. Regardless, you need a little something to fight against those razor like teeth. Can anyone recommend an American made rod for conventional off shore catches like tuna and marlin? Anything below 6 foot would be good. I have a buddy in Korea who basically wants to boast to his Korean buddies that he has an American made one. I did speak with St Croix but they said their deepwater rods are made in Mexico. All depends on what you're going for. Average cost of a Penn International and rod is about $800 - $1000.... Yes it's pricey, but the gear will last forever. I've had my set ups since the 1980's

Why would you use lighter lb braid with a heavier lb flourocarbon leader. Should be the other way around. It will still break at 12 pounds either way, but you will have a thinner, less visible leader. With the benefit of not having to tie another leader on if it breaks. because your leader will break at the lure rather than your leader not
Thanks a million watching and asking a good question. Your point of line breaking, has to do with drag, if your drag is set properly and your knots are tied correctly, the line breaking should not happen, unless it has been knicked or has some damage somewhere. Monofilament or fluorocarbon used as a leader on top of braid serves 2 purposes. First, it is meant to absorb the shock when a fish hits. It will strecth and retract (like a rubber band) to assist in setting the hook and not yank the hook out of the fishes' mouth. Next, it is meant to be a form of loss prevention. Most fish have teeth that is like grit on sandpaper. This will slowly chaffe through your line, thus compromising it and result in a cutoff. Using a heavier leader, protects against this process should the fish engulf the whole bait/lure and start to gnaw on the line while being retrieved. Line pound test has nothing to do with the size fish, it has to do with the rating and capacity your rod & reel are designed for. When you go to boat the fish, it's a judgement call, whether to use a net, gaff or just pull on the leader and yank the fish up and over the gunwhale. This is also where the heavier class leader helps loss prevention, is right at the boat. Hope this helps. Thanks again for your support of the channel. I truly appreciate it. Thanks a million for watching and asking every question. On my lighter gear I use a 12lb main line with a 20 lb fluorocarbon leader you are correct. I've never really had a problem with this line combination. Line pound test to me is not about how big the fish is but about how you apply drag to your settings and play the fish. Also for my lighter 15 to 30 lb class trolling gear my main line is 20 lb test. Again this is great line to use for those lighter setups monofilament is all about the elasticity and the retraction that happens when a fish strikes. the line will stretch and then when it retracts it pulls the hook back towards you which is what helps set the hook.
