Probably the hardest album to get into in Pantera's catalog, but those who like it, like it a lot... As a whole, it's very dark and depressing, pissed off, yet introspective rather than the chest-beating, outward anger of previous albums. I think Phil's addiction, and turmoil within the band caused Phil to finally realise that most of his problems at that time were self inflicted. And while he was dumb as hell, almost dying on multiple occasions, and lost in the isolation of heroin, he seemed to learn more about himself, and grow up both lyrically and intellectually around this time. Most of it is stream of consciousness, and regularly contradicts itself, but such is the duality inside the mind of someone who both wants to get clean, while that same mind is trying to justify doing more- by cutting you away from people who don't agree with using, and telling you you're not worth being clean, and that you might as well keep going until you die, cuz no one will care either way. I've always found solace in that kind of lyricism, with the darkness, but some gallows humor peppered in, and yet having the duality of knowing that the distinctly different voices on the phone telling you to do these counterproductive things are coming from inside the house(to use a well-worn horror movie trope lol). Phil was both coming up with great stuff during this era, and unable to execute it as effectively as on other albums. The albums with Down were very similar in terms of subject matter and tone, but were seemingly more cohesive, as I think Phil struggled to be on the same wavelength as the Abbott Brothers, due to their hard drinking and rambunctiousness, and his wanting to be in a heroin hole by himself most of the time. They managed to pull it back together for Reinventing The Steel however, as that was a much more "classic" Pantera-sounding album, and was not nearly as dark and despondent as Trendkill. It still benefitted from the maturing he did during this one, and I think he still owes a debt of gratitude to this period for helping him grow as a person, and not see everything as black and white as he had previously. Reinventing was black and white in terms of "We're not one of these 'fake metal' bands", but also showed Phil being competent at lyrically acknowledging just how much grey was in all our lives for the first time. Too bad Reinventing was their last together, and things ended the way they did.
@@smokerman81 I can see that.. things like Good Friends and a Bottle of Pills aren't exactly universally accessible, but there are some bangers on there too.. basically the same as all their albums, as there's not one that doesn't have a seriously awesome song or 2 that's undeniable, even if you're not a Pantera fan.
‘uncomfortable pockets’ is exactly where they wanted you. The solo relieves us for a bit but like active addiction, we’re right back in it. Nice work, guys.
Love this song. I think it hits better in the context of the whole album listened through. At the end my brain always goes immediately into the drum intro of 13 steps.
Others have already mentioned this but this album was groundbreaking in so many ways. Pantera was always about attitude, agression, and (pardon the pun) domination over areas of life that needed to be dominated. This album showed that personal reflection and introspection had it's place in metal. Thank you for being open minded about this and giving it a chance. Subscribed!
Trendkill was a weird album, especially coming after Far Beyond Driven. The band was going through the beginning of the issues that would break them up, and Phil recorded his vocals in Louisiana away from the rest of the band. Phil seemed more like he was doing his Down stuff than what people were used to with Pantera.
To me Trendkill always felt like a cry for help, they were going to through a very tough phase during that period and they were telling us all about it through their music
You always know it's Pantera, whether you like it or not. And dog knows I struggle/d with some of their songs/albums. Still one of my all time favourite bands of ever. It probably helped seeing them live back in the day, to this day the best gigs of my life.
Hi from South Africa! Since Judson didn't much like Floods or 10's (the slower/softer tunes), throw him with Suicide Note Pt 2! The Great Southern Trendkill is my favourite Pantera album! Rock on gents!
Besides the good reviews, the most authentic thing about this channel is that If you ask anyone in this world, you have 2 friends, a Metalhead and a Pianist. Everyone will assume that the extravert and the guy with the jokes is the Metalhead. But here, the pianist is the one making the show, and Richards is rolling his eyes 😂
Ya'll should do En Minor's "On the Floor", the Revolver video in particular. Cool to see the evolution of Phil and that he's still kicking and putting out interesting music.
When Judson hits you with the “do I contradict myself? Very well then I contradict myself.” Keep it up, makes for interesting conversation! Loooove me some Linger.
Been a long time since ive heard this song, but the opening riffs are giving me Devin Townsend -Deadhead vibes...its cool to hear a song after a while and be able to pick out the music it later influenced.
I think what needs to be get here is the obscurity of the place from where this song comes from... and the dissonance of the sound reflects that for sure. I like it
This song is a vibe. I am not even a Pantera fan, but this one always spoke to me. The way this songs expresses struggle of living is not for everyone for sure 😂 its just heavy as a truck
I'd like to think I can predict how Judson might react to a back to back non-stop play through of Suicide Note Parts 1 & 2 from this album, specifically as it pertains to the vocals. I'm not talking lyrical content, just the tone and contrast to the melodies as he often breaks down for us (with a particular reference to Pantera).
Exzellent. Ihr seid großartig, ich freue mich immer, euch zu sehen. Würden sie eine reaktion auf EMPEROR abgeben? Vielen Dank und grüße aus Deutschland
Such a beautiful song to me, always good hearing people's thoughts on it. It's okay to be contradictory because it's normal to have conflicting thoughts, especially trying to encapsulate a song after hearing it once lol, and also, you can dislike something on one song and like the same sort of thing on another; some times it's more effective to you when presented in a certain way. So continue contradicting if you have to! It's part of the back and forth process of talking about subjective and often abstract things like art lol.
A lot to say about this one.. I got to see Pantera 4 times before Dime was murdered.. Once at Ozzfest 2000 Dime dumped a whole box of guitar picks on me, of which I collected 8 of them.. easily one of my all time faves.. Trendkill is my fave album by them, mostly because of Phil's outstanding screams throughout the album (except the 2 songs Judson has heard).. not bad songs but I think the rest of it is much better, it's Very Heavy and Phil's screams are just so intoxicating.. a little disappointed that Judsons not getting the full gist of one of the best albums ever.. Please keep trying!!
Speaking of thall, you should show him Mirar! Songs he might enjoy would probably be Franka. Maybe Rachma. They’re heavily influenced by classical music and these songs reference classical songs so it might be interesting to get Judson’s perspective. They are peak thall so some of their shit is hard to listen to but you can’t deny the musicianship and talent these guys have. Their main guitarist is a French classically and jazz trained guitarist as well so he really knows his shit, and I think Mirar is his solo project with guest appearances but I asked him and he said he programmed all the drums, sound design, mix, and obviously he plays all the guitars and programmed bass

Manowars warriors of the world is a GREAT introduction to power metal:)
I want to know how Judson feels about Phil's vocals on Shattered or Clash With Reality compared to this
Power Metal, Over And Out, Death Trap..
I read people saying this is the dumbest album in the history of metal. I dont know but this song is good. Is dark and heavy.
It's dark and feels heavier than some of the death metal songs I think cause of the really big spacing in the drums and how slow it drags out
Have you ever done a video on Down? NOLA is a absolute masterpiece
To hell with comments. Contradict yourself all you want. That's how people talk to each other. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Keep exploring, gents 🤘
