Man, when you were 14 and KoRn first showed up and scared the everloving hell out you because you had NO IDEA what you were hearing...nothing else spoke to you quite like them.
This was amazing. Before they spent thousands of dollars on pedals (especially the Whammy to make those octave jumps), they used to create all kinds of crazy sounds with just their fingers and imagination. You did a great job exploring their technique. Regarding the groove and unusual palm muting, Munky and Head once said that everyone in the band was influenced to some degree by hip-hop, so they aimed to make the guitars sound like they were being played and chopped by a DJ on a turntable. Knowing that, it makes a lot of sense. It explains the sudden silences, rhythm changes, and jumps between low and high sounds, etc.

Love that tone. This is how a 7 string should sound. So many other TH-camrs make them sound like cotton wool dipped in gravy and it's just pure ear cancer. You can barely make out anything.

The first two Korn records were the beginning of the new era of metal music. You like them or not they are a huge part of heavy music that inspired and still inspire musicians to create music, from metalcore to the more extreme styles. Respect
Used to play nothing but Korn on my 7-string RG Ibanez. Hours and hours after school. Incessant. Had no idea how much my chops benefited from learning so much of these techniques early in my guitar playing life. Awesome video!

Another amazing video. Would love to see you talk about the guitar techniques of the following bands Trivium, Linkin Park, and Deftones. Both Trivium and Deftones is actually easy since a good number of their songs are played on seven string guitars, and Linkin Park is even more easy because their using six string. Would love to see you give all three of those bands some love. Keep up the great work Mike.
I've always said Korn is the most unique and original band to come out in the last 30 years and have such a massive impact on mainstream audiences. Korn, on the surface, looks like very straightforward stuff but to try to replicate it and have it sound like Korn yourself is deceivingly tough. Between all the effects they use and strange unorthodox chords and all the call-and-answer stuff Munky and Head do, not to mention in their meth years, they wrote some crazy fast power chord stuff like Dead Bodies Everywhere that is legitimately a hand cramper to try and replicate. They were also one of the first bands to really utilize the whammy pedal to not only have wild pitch shifting riffs but they also utilized the low octave harmonies that is a staple in modern metal. Korn was the first to do it all the way back on Untouchables. An album I still believe is the best sounding album ever made. The super low frequencies used to literally knock my headphones off my head back in the day because it was so bassy and sounded so good that you had to crank it and get that subwoofer rumble. Innovators even on the audio recording side, nobody ever recorded like that and still remains one of the best mixed and sounding metal records ever made. I have no problems in saying Korn is one of the hardest bands to cover and have it sound like Korn.

A 7 string video! I keep mine in standard and play a lot of Fear Factory and transpose Machine Head from drop B to B standard but also try to write stuff on it which usually ends up being kind of prog or groove metal. It's easily my favourite guitar (Jackson Dinky with fanned frets).
It's actually amazing how breathtakingly original Korn was in the late 90s. Life Is Peachy in particular is almost pure experimentation, it's probably the Korn album I go back to the most and I end up discovering some little detail I've never heard before. Rick Beato said it best: “Any rock genre up until nu metal was based on the blues… [Korn] was a real shift away from traditional rock, and in some ways is closer to 20th century classical music with its heavy use of chromaticism”.

Nothing sounded that groovy and heavy up to that point. I also wrote KoRn on the tape with Elmer's Glue and the backwards R. It was legit! 😆

@@TheArtofGuitar thats exciting.. i would love to see a cameo from the sitar-itar. (Samurai Guitarist has the same style sitar-itar, and his wife came up with calling it "the flying pig".. like a flying V, because turn it around, and look at the shape of the body, youll see it too... bahahah
Those "dissonance" chords i would just call triad octaves, since they would be an octave finger shape, with the added triad note. I think the guitarist called it the Mr. Bungle chord or something.
I think you mean "tritone". A triad is a set of three notes, usually stacked thirds. The tritone is called the diminished fifth. Those chords are called diminishes chords. If there's no third in there, then they'd probably be called "diminished 5" chords.
Head and Munky do a really good example of their techniques playing some parts on the Ibanez '7th Heaven' video... I believe it's on TH-cam - definitely worth a look. Mike how do you always have a guitar that matches the music in your videos. Id love to see your collection.
Not always. I’m trying to get a good Dimebag guitar. I used my friends for my DDarrell Artist Series. Guitar collection videos coming soon.
@@TheArtofGuitar cool. Can't wait
@@TheArtofGuitar thats exciting.. i would love to see a cameo from the sitar-itar. (Samurai Guitarist has the same style sitar-itar, and his wife came up with calling it "the flying pig".. like a flying V, because turn it around, and look at the shape of the body, youll see it too... bahahah
Very nice video! Finally someone who understands all the little detailes in their playstyle.
Do you mind sharing your effect chain and your settings?
No effects. Just plugged right into my ENGL Retro Tube 100 into a Marshall 4x12 1960's vintage cab.
@@TheArtofGuitar thats impressive! Thank you
Those "dissonance" chords i would just call triad octaves, since they would be an octave finger shape, with the added triad note. I think the guitarist called it the Mr. Bungle chord or something.
I think you mean "tritone". A triad is a set of three notes, usually stacked thirds. The tritone is called the diminished fifth. Those chords are called diminishes chords. If there's no third in there, then they'd probably be called "diminished 5" chords.
the black 7 string Ibanez with green pickups will always remind me of John petrucci's guitar in the Lie video 😊
This is such a great video!
Nice man, i think I need to add me a 7 string to my collection. 🤙
I think somebody went to the concert and left hyped up! Lol
I got you bruh. It was an amazing show! Ive been playing korn for last couple weeks.
No I made this before the concert. That being said I will be doing a review of the show. :)
@@TheArtofGuitar Do you have a video to setup the guitar to play Korn?
I tried to setup my 7-string and messed it up.
Gojira and KoRn were awesome at the 30 year tour
Amazing video, could you do a follow up video one day on the later albums ?
I have the same guitar. Love it!
Head and Munky do a really good example of their techniques playing some parts on the Ibanez '7th Heaven' video...
I believe it's on TH-cam - definitely worth a look.
The whole promo vid is rad I still have one of the original VHS tapes - I borrowed it from the local music store where I had lessons back in 2000
This is a great idea for a video series. I don't know if that's your style but looking at the "X tricks" for various guitarists/bands would be very cool to see.
I’ve had a series since 2016 called the Artist Series that does just that. :)
@@TheArtofGuitar Awesome, I'll check out your playlist now.
Thank u for this!!!🤘🏻🤘🏻
During the whole proggy segment you mentioned, i instantly thought of the middle of Predictable.
Nice guitar, looks like from type o negativ ( best band ever ).
