That Floods outro is probably my favourite guitar riff/solo ever and thats saying something. Its just so goddamn atmospheric.
Over the years I actually appreciated Trendkill as an album waaay more, so much so that if youd ask me on the right day, I would say its their best work. It for sure has the thickest and darkest atmosphere.

There's a 24h loop of this riff on youtube. Once I was feeling melancholic af and that outro came to my mind, I just played that loop and listened to this mastepierce for 3,5h straight without a single pause. And didnt get bored at all, just had to stop to finally do something instead of sitting and listening to a single riff over and over again lmao. Its otherworldy beautiful, one of my top favorites as well. Also, thats my favorite metal guitar solo ever

The first time I'd ever heard anything of this song was around 2010. I was about 15 or 16 and had spent the night at my buddy's house.
He had woken up before me and was practicing guitar. As I woke up that morning, he was playing the outro riff perfectly and I remember being so mesmerized by it. It was the first thing I heard upon waking and it was a ridiculously memorable thing.

Rex SOLOS the bbass under Dime's solo and it is incredible, just incredible
21:28 is what i came for. When that outro riff kicks in, you see his eyebrows raise. Man that ending gives me fucking chills and i have heard the song about 500 times. God damn that is a cool as riff. Melancholic, Beautiful, Awe inspiring, Lonely, Peaceful, Finality of a chapter ending, etc. I believe it was called Rita's Lullaby originalyl, and Dime recorded a multiple hour loop on cassette of him playing it so his gf Rita could drift off to sleep when he wasnt around, and she could feel like he's still there. FUCK that is beautiufl

I don't see many requests for *_Suicide Note 1 and 2_* unfortunately but in my opinion those two are the summa of Pantera's style and potential and giving the perfect idea of the reasons why Phil Anselmo's voice had the potential _{basically if only Phil didn't destroy his own voice so quickly along the years}_ to become among the best, if not the best, of all times. i’m 22 years old and recently giving this album a FULL listen was mind blowing. right after Far Beyond Driven debuts at #1, they decide to drop this BEAST that is a way heavier and darker direction. I’ve heard many things about this album but the fact that Phil (lead singer) stayed in New Orleans to record vocals because he was struggling with addiction and Dimebag had to go back and forth from Texas to piece the album together…there’s a different feel to this album, the dark and heavy things we all go through are almost FELT in these songs. especially in this one and 10’s, the guitar almost sounds like it’s crying with you

  • @aaronwilliams1503

If you hear that Phil is not singing in key it could be because at that time in Pantera history they were not getting along. Vinnie said that he wasn't happy with Phil's singing on Floods.

Yeah he's not saying die. He is saying Flood and they are using like a decaying delay effect. You can only hear the F sound the first time he say the word in the phrase. Then it delays with the first syllable cut off and so you then hear the "lood" part during first repeat and so on. and the last repeat before the phrase starts over it's pretty much just the "duh" sound. If any of that makes sense.

I'm only at 13:05 in and making this comment, but I'm kinda with RIchard on this one. I really like listening to this song, but I'm always really just waiting for the Heavy sections to drop. Maybe the Heavy Sections sound so good because we made it through this section where the vocals are really difficult. It kinda sounds like what it is. It sounds like a guy singing who is in pain and doing really heavy drugs. As a whole though the song is excellent when you're in the mood for it.

12:19 I believe at this point Pantera had almost split up, and they send Phill the music and he put on the vocals. If they had been in the same room I would think it could have been more in tune.

There are two types of music lovers. Those who get lost in the rules and keys and such. Then there are those like me who get lost in the lawlessness. That's the best part of Phils music style.

One of my favorites. There are a lot of 9th chord progressions in this song which isn’t easy on guitar. I just saw Pantera in Arlington, TX with Metallica last month. They didn’t play this one.

There is a deep windy sound before the kick in at the beginning of Cemetery Gates almost sounds like someone blowing on a mic but you can tell it was intentionally added. A lot of Rock and Metal band backs in then were using samples of sounds, movie scene vocals and other things along those lines.

Don't know if anyone has pointed this out, but not only was Phil heavily addicted to heroin at this point, but dime, Vinnie and rex recorded this record in Texas and they had to send the tracks to Phil in new Orleans where he recorded his vocals with Trent reznor in Trent's studio. They then had to send the vocals back to Texas, so the overall communication between both parties was very minimal. So I'm sure if the band didn't like alot of Phil's efforts, there wasn't much that could be done. But still my favorite record by them.

I couldnt wait for that album to drop. I went to K-Mart on my lunch break the day it came out haha. I also couldnt believe how heavy it was....Had no idea at the time of the trouble that was going on within the band.....\m/ J- ya picked up on the pinch harmonics right away. Dime was King at grabbing those and sending them through the Stratosphere haha. He used a Whammy pedal quite a bit too. \m/

One of, if not my absolute favorite Pantera song, and I really listen to it for the solo and outro. I can't even be bothered to argue with the contention that it's the 15th best guitar solo of all time. Seems about right to me, and it's almost entirely due to the phrasing. The structure, and symmetry it has are very satisfying.
