It was pretty obvious, he was going on a suicide mission so that he could either win the stage or lose yellow, which would’ve spared his team for pacing in the mountains. Think about it, attacking with 148km left to get into the breakaway and holding off the peloton to win in the Yellow Jersey. Sounds like something Merckx would've done in the early 70's lol, but if WVA had waited until the last two climbs of the day to put in an acceleration he definitely could've done the same thing he did on Stage 4. WVA’s efforts literally make no sense. People saying it was so he could lose the jersey so TJV wouldn’t have to defend it in the mountains makes no sense either: (1) WVA was literally out in front to try and extend his lead in the YJ and (2) he is not a contender for overall victory at all, so there would’ve been no obligation for them to defend it in the mountains. Instead, TJV put their TWO team leaders at risk by putting him out front where he spent all his energy, instead of using him to power them over the last couple of hills. That would’ve been far more effective. Seems TJV want to throw away this tour. Will wait to see if LR has the answer!

@@cua7180 'tossed away his champioship'. Nonsense. He was never going for yellow. All along he has been clear he is going for the green jersey. If Quinn Symonds had been a fitter cyclist with him they could have taken to the end and probably WVA would have gifted Symonds with the win and kept yellow for another day.
However the main impact of his joining the breakaway and then soloing from 30km to 11km was that JV did not have to pace all day and so rested and the other GC teams have to organise a chase and spend a lot of energy - as we see it was one of the fastest races on record indicating a very high average speed for the lead out guys towing along his JV teammates in the bunch. The other GC teams would have hoped to coast along much of today to conserve energy for tomorrow.
Then after he was caught at 11km to go he did the right thing by slipping right back through the peloton and coming in minutes behind Pog. Now he is definitely no longer a GC threat and will be allowed to join other breakaways and so mop up whatever intermediate sprint points are on offer on that stage and then drop back to the main group and ride with them as a domestique until the end plus if it is sprint finish contest that as well. It was smart tactics.

Pogi is BLOWING AWAY the accomplishments of the riders in the 90s when dooing was rampant so it makes you think. As I said I won't accuse unless there's PROOF but there's just NO WAY Pogi is SMASHING the output of Armstrong and others in the 90s if he's not doping.
