Why the Tour de France is so brutal

    The Tour de France is the most prominent cycling race in the world. It’s now in its 109th edition and it’s being called the ‘Highest in History’ because there are more climbs than ever before. This is important because the climbs are where the race is won and lost. The best riders rely on their teammates to get them through the long, flat, and hilly stages, before they take on the mountain stages on their own. These are the hardest and most brutal stages of the race - but they are exactly what makes the Tour de France famous.

    Clarification: In our discussion of the 2010 race, our video neglected to mention that Alberto Contador was later stripped of the title because he had tested positive for using a performance-enhancing drug.

Also it would help (perhaps in a follow-up video) to mention the green, polka-dot, and white jersey competitions; the all-time greats like Merckx, Hinault, Bartali (for his sporting and humanitarian achievements), etc.; the basics of breakaways and sprints; the existence of the Giro, Vuelta, monuments and classics; the women's peloton and equities there...

      @manoncamous8698 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Not necesseraly because a heavier cyclist also has more muscle (since these guys are basically pure muscle), and more muscle also means it's easier to fight gravity
      So there should be an optimum weight above which more muscle does not help you fight gravity anymore but just slows you down.

    • @EgelundB
      @EgelundB 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@manoncamous8698 Obviously, tho that will still not make them able to keep up with the light climbers. It also very much comes down to what type of muscle fibers you train/are genetically gifted. Whereas if you’re a small light guy, you’d probably go towards being a climber rather than a sprinter, and work on longer smoother efforts, instead of shorter, sprint type efforts. People who don't follow cycling often ask me why, in clips of the TDF, the riders "aren't trying to pass." This video offers a good explanation of why: road cycling isn't about going all-out all the time, but rather about picking your battles and saving your energy for the crucial moments. This is why teams are so important. And it's also why a road race unfolds so differently from a mountain bike or cyclo-cross race. In those subdisciplines, the speeds are much lower, and wind resistance is less important. So they unfold more like a running race in which the competitors gradually drift apart based on strength.

      There is such a formula though. Several in fact, they just didn't show it in the video.
      - Be a much better climber than anyone else. Have your team dictate a very high tempo in the mountain stages and attack only when everybody lost all of their domestiques.
      - Be a "merely" very good climber but much better time trialist than comparable climbers. Don't care about the attacks, just do a constant tempo on the climbs then destroy them in the TT.

    300 watts is WAY low on the front. 400 w is more accurate to go 45 km/h, depending on body position.

      Using the equipment they use, ~300W seems somewhat accurate.

      300 w is accurate, holding 400 watts for so long is very hard

      If it's tailwind, they need to produce around 250w to go around 45 km/h. On headwind and crosswind it's another story

      @@jmfwarmi No one is taking pulls for the whole stage. 30 seconds to a few minutes at 400-450. Sure it averages out to 300 but a lot of that is sitting in the peloton.

    Contador gave that stage to schleck as it made no difference to his overall lead and perhaps helped him solidify his lead over other competitors aside from schleck. He didn’t contest the finish as you saw.
