'60s Indy Kart Resto Pt. 2 | Sandblasting, Paint, Assembly!

  • We're restoring our 1960s go kart, the "Crue Cut Indy 500". Given that this vintage go kart is over 50 years old, the frame needed to be sandblasted to remove the rust, then painted with a rust encapsulator. We also clean up the fiberglass body, and reassemble the kart. We decide on a Predator 212 engine as a temporary power plant, but we want to eventually install a vintage, period correct engine on this Indy 500 go kart.

    i have a vintage briggs sold by sears and roebuck, circa late 1950s early 1960s, message me if you want details on it. i do believe i had it running on dribbled gas last summer. oil bath air filter is included, as is the glass bowl carb, and i think i have some parts somewhere to rebuild most of the carb too

  • @CarsandCameras
    @CarsandCameras  5 ปีที่แล้ว +107

    Since the conclusion of this video got cut short: basically we’re going to use a lightly modified 212 on this engine (sorry not sorry purists, they’re cheap and powerful) until we get more information/find a period correct engine to install. Next time we’ll finish up our engine mounts and do some massive one wheel burnouts. I’d really like to build a replica with a live axle, lots of power, updates brakes, etc but making a mold of a body would be quite expensive.

    • @sadelcol
      @sadelcol 5 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      I think you should do some updates to the cart itself. Making it a proper live axle and adding better brakes. You really could leave most of it alone and basically turn it into a restomod cart.

    • @pkuudsk9927
      @pkuudsk9927 5 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Actually not really a small mold like that would be about the cost of making 3 bodies .So if you make and sold 5 bodies then it would be free .
      That cart needs a 2 stroke motor 80-125 cc ,light weight for the frame and enough power . Old John Deer or a McCulloch

      I honestly think that is the way to go right now, the powerband and characteristics of a 2stroke is perfect for the body type, and if they keep it small cc it wont be too torquey = no twisting of the flimsy frame.

    Sandblasting is tedious work, but the right media makes a difference. See if you can run medium grit Garnet in your machine. I used it in my 60 horsepower vapor blaster and it cut right through rust and paint. Also, try putting down a plastic sheet to capture some of that debris. You may reuse it, or at least avoid leaving piles of sand in the yard.

    Hi, I worked at Crue Cut Mfg Co in Kansas City Missouri from about 1970 until 1980, first as an assembler and later as the assistant plant manager. I built several of these cars, but you are right in that few were built. We also built the T-10 Model T and several other small minicars. This company was founded in the early 1960s by Dale Gosser, after he purchased tooling from McDonough Power Equipment, predecessor of Snapper lawnmowers. We probably only built 2-3 of the Lotus's per month, compared to about 100 model Ts. About 1980, Gosser sold the company to Charles Sharp, his plant manager, and it was moved to Gardner, KS and became known as Sharp Minicars. Charile passed in Jan 2019. The original engine was a Tecumseh, first 3 hp then later 5 hp. I believe the model #'s were H30 and H50. To get them to fit in the allowed space, we removed the gas tank bracket, cut it, re-welded them with a modification, then remounted the tank. The brake problem you mentioned was of factory design and the way you showed it in the video is how it left the factory. The frames were simply painted with silver paint from aerosol spray cans. I am very surprised to see how good of condition this is in after the length of time. I believe we purchased the steering wheel from a company that was known as Azusa, somewhere in California. The bodies were fabricated locally using our master molds. There are no patents on the body style so go for it in making reproductions. FYI, I about this time started a small company building a 1932 Street Rod, mini-car production. I later sold this to Sharp Minicar. I have seen several of them on the internet and they may be still in production. They were a very cool, much heavier car built with square steel tubing and a fiberglas body. Maybe you can find one of those to restore! Let me know if you have any other questions - I can probably answer them.

    Back in the 60’s it was common to use 2 strokes in toys and utility and of course snow machines. OMC made a 1 cylinder 2 stroke air cooled just for that purpose, they used them in Cushman bikes and truckster’s it’s a taller but narrower motor that should fit you cart . I don’t have a single cylinder here but they are available and parts are still available through Sierra . Good luck

    POR...Paint Over Rust. That's good stuff. It's recommend to remove as much of the flaky surface rust as possible before applying so, the amount of sandblasting you did was about all that was needed. A remote mounted fuel tank would be the best option to use with one of your vintage engines. Adapt an appropriate replacement carb & pulse pump and it'll be fine.

    Por15 is not a paint per se. It’s a metal sealer/rust inhibitor. I’ve used it for years and I’ve found that it works much better if you also use their degreaser and metal prep. That does add time to the project though. It doesn’t hold up well to UV light either. It works great for fibreglassing too since it doesn’t rot. Enjoyed the video guys. Keep em coming.

    I think it looks better with the 212 predator engine protruding. And yes I remember seeing them in the local lawn mower shop window when I was a kid in the 1960's. Scruff brakes were typical of gocarts and minibikes of the vintage. The alternative at the time was a brake band that tightened on the circumference of the centrifugal clutch. Of which stun k to high heaven if you broke the drive chain.

  • @eyesauceelise1034

    As far as your brake linkage issue, I think if you look at the system, it's been flipped upside down. The paddles pressing back against the tires opposite the rotation is probably hard on the tread and the paddles. If you flip it over 180 degrees I bet the rod would tuck up inside the frame under the body and it would put the brace for the linkage up out of the way of bumps and tree roots. Just my two cents. Love the videos, Ike reminds me of all the shade tree mechanics and good 'ole boys I knew growing up in middle Tennessee. Keep up the great stuff guys.

Put a newer H70 on it and put the H60 on a 1951 David Bradley....that old garden tractor would throw dirt in the air if you opened it up plowing..Hehehe. Have you guys thought of leaving the "Stock" Brake Paddles, but converting to Disc/Drum brakes?...
    Just attach the brake cable to the "OEM" Arm and run with it!
    This way, it's STILL STOCK, and can easily be converted back!
    Rock On guys!

    POR 15 is meant to be a base coat, you must paint over it with a good quality paint (Rust-Oleum) in order to keep the UV Ray's from breaking it down. ( The only thing that will break it down).it will break down and fade , ...learned my lesson.
    That engine you pulled off is a Tecumseh HMSK80 8 hp snowblower engine. Great engine!! Find a good running replacement.

    Try dual external brake linkage rails out board of the chassis for safety, dont be aftaid to do a little metal fab, it could always be returned to 'vintage' if wanted. The current setup looks almost like an afterthought . Bravo on the resto !

    trick that works is using sandbox sand and a screen door I'm sure you can put two and two together. Did a resto on 63 Impala using the sandbox sand on the frame and it did a real great job on the frame before painting

    You guys should really top-coat the POR-15. They recommend that, and for years I was like "Bah, I don't need to do that." and then UV turned all the black parts a weird yellow-brownish and I figured I probably should. Just some advice to keep it looking decent for as long as possible.

    POR15 is a rust reformer and it is designed to stick to rust so there really wasn't a need to sand blast it unless you just wanted it to be smoother

    Great stuff. You might find your stopping distance to be increased dramatically with the Preditor engine. If you are only temporarily using the engine you might consider temporarily adding better brakes.

  • @andrewbottrell1048

    Fix the brakes. Vintage motor. Take your time.
    Seems pointless to put a predator on it if the brakes won’t stop it.
    Might just be me but those brakes look like they belong in the garbage and I would rather watch you build an old engine to put on it.
    Is the chassis even safe enough to be run at high speeds?

      Randall Zrubek I agree but it is hard to believe that brake setup is original. It looks cobbled in like the engine replacement was.
