Street Legal Golf Cart's MAIDEN VOYAGE!

  • Our street legal golf cart build is now officially street legal, and it's time for it's first road test! We drive our 420cc golf cart over to Ike's work to pick up some parts, and only have a few minor speed bumps along the way. We have to service the 40 series torque converter, by taking it apart and cleaning it. Other than that, the golf cart is smooth and reliable!

An idea, could source a two speed transmission from @ratherbwelding , gear it for 25 mph and an "overdrive" gear. Should also cut some heat vents into the side or front so you don't recirculate hot air. Love the video!

To start with, the Caravelle is a Reanault Dauphine rebodied by Ghia in Italy (like a VW Karmann-Ghia).
Here in France the Caravelle is called Floride (obviously they changed the name for the US market). CARAVELLE is written on the front, which means it's got the big 1100cc from the R8 ^^
If it's got a single barrel carb: 55hp (S.A.E.) and if it's a two barrel weber: 57,5 hp ^^ The last version with 2 1/2 more hp is even called 1100S (S standing for "sport") !!!

golf course mechanic here, use 80-90W in that rear end. The bearings on your input shaft get lubrication from the gears carrying the oil up. we even run straight lucas if they get noisy. if you ever have to rebuild it they are all common numbered ball bearings you can get from any parts store.

Maybe add an extension to that muffler so the exhaust fumes dont build up under the bed.

The new one had the same issue so I broke it down and cleaned the insides with a wire wheel, and used CLP (gun cleaner / lubricant) after cleaning and lubing i only had an issue at around 40mph +

a good way to keep those torque converters from locking up is to lubricate it with some graphite powder, I have an old comet torque converter on my old gokart and it used to lock up all the time, but after some graphite power it stopped doing it. also dont use wet lubricants like grease or oil, cause like you guys said it attracts dirt and dust from the roads and will make it lock up more.

The Renault quoted from Hemmings website : Equipped with the 1,108cc, 57hp Sierra four-cylinder engine and a four-speed, fully-synchronized gearbox, the Caravelle was now capable of a top speed of 87 MPH. It also boasted a disc brake at all four corners. Renault’s advertising noted that the engine “can send you surging into the 60s in 19 seconds flat.” The car listed for $2,295 in the U.S., or $200 less than a Karmann Ghia convertible.
