As a kid, I used to think Robocop from his appearance with some goofy old movie until when I was a little older and saw that scene. That was probably one of the most brutal things I’ve ever watched on television.
I'm 45. I think this came out when I was about 10? Oddly enough, I completely forgot about this scene, yet the dead body scene from Stand By Me has stuck in my head since I originally saw it. Probably bc it was more relatable to 10 yo me?
Whole movie is rough The whole point is a reaction to an unkind society that’s what the Director was getting at. Nobody benefits even RoboCop doesn’t benefit. He becomes a piece of property to a company and basically loses all human rights. Whole point of that movie is that criminals are a punishment for a failed society if you are getting criminals it’s because you’re a failure as a society

My parents bought me the RoboCop box set for Christmas when I was 5. Needless to say that part with the shotgun traumatized me. Still probably my favorite movie lmao

I always thought that him doing a weird "Ne Ne Ne Ne..." sound effects was like a foreshadowing or reference to how Murphy would become robotic and has a "computerized" sound effect for whenever his brain needs to focus and aim his gun at a specific target

"Benefit or a Hazard" is a reference to Bladerunner, while "Dyin' Ain't Much of a Livin'" is a reference to The Outlaw Josey Wales. Funnily enough you can accomplish both with That Gun or any 5.56mm Pistol, which is also a Bladerunner reference.

Robocop was a brutal movie. I still think this scene is chilling even in 2024. Just no remorse by the criminals in that scene.
