  • How the Highstreet has changed in the 40 years up to 2022.
In 1982 I was very concerned about the number of old buildings disappearing in the town so I photographed Orpington high street to create a record
I have gone back at regular intervals ever since to photograph and then in 2022, the year of the platinum jubilee, video
So what has changed between 1982 and 2022?
I will be preparing a series of videos showing how the high street has changed over these 40 years. Although the pictures are from Orpington the changes were mirrored in many towns across the country
The pictures are used to highlight the many changes in the street scene over the last 40 years
This video shows the changes around the Orpington War memorial and Cenotaph; the 2 Village Halls, the old carpark and Tescos and a detailed look at 4 shop fronts.
It also looks at the old adverts on Billboards in 1982 and changes in road / path layout. It highlights how street furniture has changed
Please subscribe to get updates as I release them

I love this, do you have ones for(how the Highstreet changed) like this in other parts of Kent like: Dartford, Bexleyheath,/Welling, Swanley, Maidstone etc....
Will look through the rest if your videos now!
I'm also from Kent right between Dartford/Bexleyheath 😃
My grandad who is 94 lives in Orpington in St Paul's Cray and has lived there all his life!

Thank you, glad you enjoyed it! I am afraid I don't have any other Highstreet videos other than Orpington at present. I do have in the pipeline other places in Kent close to Orpington such as Chislehurst and St Mary Cray. 94 that is amazing! The area must have changed so much during your Grandad's lifetime!

@@eclecticexperience1 You're welcome, no worries just thought I would ask!
But yea def do some more ones near Orpington Town as you said: Chislehurst/St Mary Cray!
Yea, it def has indeed changed so much during that time apart from a few bits.
So could you also do some other ones in Kent then like the other Kent towns of Dartford, Crayford, Bexleyheath, Welling, Swanley, Sevenoaks, Maidstone etc....??
      Are you from Orpington??

    Another great video!
I worked in Lorimer's, it was there for years but I didn't see it in these shots. It was situated near the bus stop.
    Great memories.

07:00 Ooops. The Heineken bill-board is spelled 'Heneken'. I wonder who the printers were.

I just watched this again and was really fascinated with the story of the manor house. Very cool the original gatehouse archway still exists behind boots.
We are such an ancient nation.

Yes remember Orpington well as it was where I grew up and remember before the Walnuts was even built and also where the New Village hall is was Dr Grants derelict house that stood there for years that became a playground for us as kids.

A classic interwar shopping parade that has seen tremendous change over time. Great video. More towns would benefit from this analysis.

At 13 we moved to the St Pauls Cray estate. I knew Orpington well. I worked at the WW1 hospital later on. There was a massive field for the Nuns opposite. Wonderful fresh sunny days with dreamy memories etched in my mind.

Orpington isn't distinguishable in its shop quality or noise anymore from places deeper in South London.
The recently rejected tower block scheme to replace some of The Walnut's shops should have finally killed it. It should again, should it or a similar sceme eventually be accepted.
The lauded High Street sceme incorporating large loading bays improved matters, but the road surface, especially near the central roundabout, is now very trenchy, and bumpy.
Buildings in a style of no particular cultural heritage, such as the new Village Hall; Tesco's; the abomination of the mountainous shoe box flats in the old police station area, (consuming the thousands of gallons of water people are asked to use carefully, because supposedly it should no longer be taken for granted:); and mongrel infills, (like the materials, since they can't be thought a style), consolidated to form the building now where The Edinburgh Wool Mill was, increase the perception of suffering from cultural anaemia whilst living in Anywhereland. Suppassed only by, a few miles away, Condor House, in Biggin Hill. Here's hoping that ! Condor's 'last flight' is the latest one.

I dont suppose you have more images of the demolition site of the old car park at tesco? A friend thinks the back end car park of tesco is the old car park. Thanks

Thanks, I just tried to copy a picture in here but it did not work. I have a picture of Tesco under construction and the whole site had been cleared, so it doesn't look like any of the old car park was retained.
