Polruan Castle / Blockhouse, Cornwall. Castles are Amazing, history, context, visiting tips
Built in the 15th century and only in use for its initial purpose for 60 years, one of the best preserved chain blockhouses in the country, Polruan Castle. Refortified in the English Civil War it is still here today on the River Fowey.
I think castles are amazing because they have survived for hundreds of years and often as in this case when their original purpose disappeared.
This castle or Blockhouse played a role in England’s defence strategy protecting an important harbour from raids by pirates and other nations.
This is Polruan Castle in Polruan, Cornwall, England.
This video will provide a brief history, context and visiting tips and also a little bit about the area. What was so important that it needed to be defended by at first two Blockhouses or castles and then a new castle. Please stay to the end for all the details.
I aim to visit and make short videos on many castles across the country in addition to my regular ones, so please like, subscribe and click the alert's bell for future releases.
Thank you for watching Eclectic Experience change seen through images.
Polruan Castle is located here in Polruan, Cornwall, on the other side of the River Fowey, (written FOWEY but pronounced Foy) Fowey itself and about 16 miles from Bodmin and Bodmin Moor.
On this map from Historic England, the red shaded area is the castle which is a Grade II* listed building, and more significantly a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
On this map we can also see Fowey Blockhouse also known as “Castle remains at harbour mouth” and closer to the river mouth St Catherine's Castle, which I will do a separate video on.
For context let's look at monarchs. This chart goes from the present King Charles III, all the way back to 1066 and William I, William the Conqueror.
This Castle or Blockhouse was built in response to a raid by the French in 1457 probably in the reign of Edward IV between 1461 and 1483.
St Catherine’s Castle, just down the river was built as part of Henry VIII's defence strategy after falling out with the Pope and divorcing Catherine of Aragon and this superseded the blockhouses until the English Civil War when it was fortified again in the reign of King Charles I - who was beheaded.
The Castle’s purpose was to protect the harbour and that of Fowey across the water and it did this by use of a chain strung between the blockhouses one on the Fowey side and this one.
According to Historic England chain towers are rare with only 5 remaining of which this one is the most complete and hardly altered.
There was a similar system used at Dartmouth Castle, which I have prepared a video on where I explain this in more detail, link at the end.
It is quite surprising that it was only in use for 60 years, became obsolete 500 years ago but is still here now in the 2020s albeit as a ruin.
Well part of the reason was the castle was refortified during the English Civil War when the Royalists seized the castle from the Parliamentarians to give them control over the shipping.

Thanks for this as I lived in Tadema Rd from the late 50s then into Stadium Rd for a couple of years. Primary school was Ashburnham Rd all off Lots Rd..played in bombed out warehouses fished in the creek and had a fight in is with some lads that had walked across the rail bridge from Battersea 😂 also played on sunken boats on the Thames where the embankment turned up towards the Kings Rd. Fantastic childhood 👍

The pedestrianisation is horrible. Very rarely go into town now, fosse park is much better. The city just looks dirty constantly, beggars and tramps everywhere, people stopping you asking if you have a minute to talk about your energy or broadband. The city council is pretty useless and really dont invest in making the city beautiful, preferring to make it dull and drab

A fantastic trip down memory lane. I lived near the top of Broomhill Road from 1982 to 2012. Spent far too much time in the bar at The Cricketers next door to the Common. :>) A few yards to the left of Lingfield's in Broomhill Road is the Old Forge Garage where I had my cars serviced and MOT'd. It's still there today. My son still resides in Orpington so I have seen most of the changes that have taken place over the ensuing decade.

I went to see Dead Poets Society in 1989 on its release. I was studying at the university in Leicester from 1988 to 1991 and then for my PGCE from 1992-1993. It is fascinating seeing the differences between 1989 and 2024. I hold Leicester in high regard. I have not been there for about twenty years. I know it is important to live in the moment but I am nostalgic for the eighties and would turn the clock back if I could, notwithstanding the fact that it was a tumultuous time politically and the Cold War was at its height. There are some beautiful buildings in Leicester. The people are friendly and down to earth, too. I have been thinking of going back to spend a couple of days there and I am sure I will before long.

The location you ringed on the map for Ocean Cruise Terminal is in fact the Town Quay - you’ll only catch ferries to Hythe (across Southampton Water) and the Isle of Wight from here. You need to go a bit further along Platform Road to get to the Ocean Terminal. Not sure if you can reach it via Dock Gate 5 on foot, or if you have to carry on further down the road to Dock Gate 4 (which is certainly the only way to access Ocean Terminal if you are arriving by car).

Thank you for the comment on the good quality. I have double checked and the 1989 photos were taken in November 1989. The photos are high quality scans of the negatives which is probably why they come across so well. Another check is what is showing at the Odeon, Roadhouse and the Dead Poets Society which were both released in 1989.
