That was a lucky find, they are a really lovely species, and the larva are often seen wandering around at Garden Centres I find, probably due to the masses of Willowherb that usually grows in the strips between the planting beds, I remember the first moth I saw, (many years ago now), I could not believe that any wild UK moth could have such incredible colours, but the larva is also an thing of beauty, and in different colour forms, thanks for posting this Joel ! Im keeping 4 of them in a jar to show my children the process of caterpillar to moth but i think im more excited than them 😂 I cant believe how fast they eat, ive cleared a small patch of 6 large willowherbs just feeding them over the last 9 days! Theyre getting quite big now so i expect theyll be pupating soon 😁

I watched the collaboration video from the Middle sized garden and now I'm here. 2021 was the year that we bought our first home. It is also the first year of being a gardener. In late summer there were some neighbours from behind our street working on their trees and shrubs. There by they disturbed a hawk moth catepillar. It found it's way into my back garden with a newly planted border since spring. Before this the entire back garden was filled with tiles and no plants at all. I read they liked leaflitter as well, so I immediatly put some oak leaves down to make it feel more at home. This autumn I'm planning to increase the flower border and I will plant a fuchsia in there for sure. I felled so honoured when that caterpillar chose my garden, my goal is a cottage style garden suitable for all kinds of wildlife. A safe heaven, while neighbouring gardens are far from natural and inviting❤

Hi Titia - great to see you here and I hope you find the channel helpful with your newly improved wildlife garden. So good to hear about the hawkmoth, they certainly will appreciate the fuschias :) If you check the channel you will see neighbouring gardens featured in my videos and how barren and lifeless they are - I do hope the way people garden keeps changing to consider the wildlife so desperately in need, these gardens provide so much more entertainment, and are not dead spaces in winter either. Keep me updated about your progress! Thank you so much for your support, I have lots of videos to upload shortly, it's just finding the time! Best wishes to you and yours - Joel

I don't have the space for a meadow wildflower lawn, but I can add some small strips between the plants and walkway. I have a video of the eliphant hawk moth catepillar somewhere on my channel, in case your curious🙂🐛

Hi Marion :) So sorry for the delayed response, I've been away throughout September undertaking client meadow cuts, hence the lack of videos etc. But that's made me think that Lewis Carroll was no doubt "inspired" by a hawk-moth of some sort, due to the size - I think it's mentioned in the book that the caterpillar is 3 inches long... although this particular one was pretty big :) Hope you and yours are doing well - best wishes as always - Joel

We have them every year in my garden and the moth appears in my greenhouse each year just as the rosebay willow herb comes to flower. This year I though I had missed the moth as she takes around 12 hours to dry out but one night as we sat with the door open in the evening something extremely quick flew past my eyes and near my ear as of to say I'm here and then landed on the back of the chair. They are part of the humming bird moth family so extremely rare to see them or feel them in flight we was so lucky as we are each year. We left the door open and was gone after 4am 💚🙏💚

Hi there :) You can definitely encourage more by planting night-scented flowers such as honeysuckle, they lay their eggs on rosebay willowherb, bedstraws and fuschias. Best of luck with encouraging more - it's a good thing you are doing :) Best wishes, Joel

I just found one on the concrete in my back yard. There is a very skinny self set willowherb nearby which I think he probably fell from, but I have no other plants in the garden. He was very dry when I found him out in the sun so I have put him in a tub with some damp compost and some of the leaves and flowers. He seems a bit dopey at the moment. Anything else I can do?

@@janebennett910 Poor thing! The heat has been terrible for so many creatures of late. I know it might sound like a task but do you have any willow-herb growing close-by? Thing is you'd need a pretty constant supply. To be able to tell his "age" and how long he has left as a caterpillar you might find this website helpful, it will hopefully indicate his age and whether he's slowing down to be able to find somewhere to pupate...

Hello over there! So sorry for the delay in responding, been away throughout September undertaking meadow cuts, maintenance etc across the country. So sorry to hear about the monarch caterpillars, they haven't gone off to pupate have they? I did find this out: Monarch caterpillars usually move away from the milkweed plant they were eating when they are ready to pupate, or form their chrysalis. Chrysalises are found on a variety of different plants and structures within the habitat, like benches, windowsills, and other nearby plants or bushes - I wonder if this is what they have done? :) Let me know when you get hummingbirds, I'll be very envious - hope you and yours are doing well - best wishes as always - Joel

@@WildYourGardenWithJoelAshton I hope that's the case with my cats but I don't think they were quite big enough to pupate?? I have lots of blue jays so I think they might? have gotten them. I only have a pair of Hummers that come to my feeder (they're gone now for the Winter) but I LOVE them!!! Trying to put out more plants to attract them. Take care... :)
