    I had trouble with overtraining and I had to switch my mindset and realize that sometimes being disciplined with your training means knowing when to take a rest day.

      Well said. People start to think no that discipline always means pushing harder. Sometimes you have to train smarter instead.

    I overtrained about ten years ago, while operating at a severe calorie deficit. I did lose 90 pounds but I ended up getting very sick with two serious autoimmune disorders. I had to go on a chemotherapy drug, which caused weight gain. I had so much arthritis in my hips, I could barely walk up stairs. My homeostasis was all messed up. I was cold all the time.
    I am finally back to working out but my focus is on resistance training 1-2 days a week, with alternating with yin yoga. I walk a mile or two on non lifting days. I also make it a priority to get 8 hours of sleep. My overtraining was extreme and mostly cardio driven, but I now listen to my body, even if it means skipping or postponing a workout.

    Definitely agree with this, especially the whole “I’ve pushed through a tired day before and felt great so I’ll just go to the gym”. I often get in my head that if I don’t go and obliterate myself that I just don’t want it enough and I’ll lose my gains.
    The truth is the best gains I’ve seen is when I’ve modified intensity and actually listened to my body. I like training full body and there’s been times I’ve smashed it for 3 days in a row and felt great, and times where I’ve went hard one day and had to take it easy for 4 days afterwards. The funny thing is we don’t see gains in the short term but over the long term there is a huge difference, like when I look back to this time last year and my chest press has increased 30+kg.
    The rest and workout are equally just as important. Sometimes I just need to listen to my body a little closer rather than the blanket statement of go hard everyday 🤣
    You can literally feel when you’re ready to crank again

    I really have to watch how much I excersize. I am aborist, and it can be quite intense some times. At most I do 3 days a week with low volume training. Does wonders for my body when I rest and pay attention to my body and work out accordingly.... Full body low volume has saved me alot of time and my strength is increasing.

    • @MisterNiggles
      @MisterNiggles ปีที่แล้ว

      I am an arborist also, I’ve worked out consistently for years. Recently for nearly 2 months I pushed it up to 6x a week lifting, and this in combination with tree work pushed me over the edge into true overtraining. Getting sick constantly, insomnia, irritability. On week two of rest/recovery right now

  • @jhumble7045

    I went through this for the first time yesterday. I didnt feel like my usual but told myself to go and train anyway. However half way through my workout I felt really sick in my chest, stomach and especially in my head. It was horrible and I am something who can handle intensity. My nervous system was fried. It was really really bad like I was going to collapse. I will never ignore this again, I now believe overtraining and ignoring proper recovery is dangerous. I'm 46 so my age probably added to the exhaustion.

    Gauging training load for strength training is harder. We have all these fitness watches that do great jobs with that with cardio exercise, but strength training has yet to receive alot of attention in this area on these devices.
    What is an appropriate volume or training load is going to be different for everybody, too. Many people have unrealistic fitness goals and this can complicate recognizing overtraining.

    I fell into the trap of training hard multiple days in a row because my legs feel weak after I train them, which is really quite stupid, they're weak because they're tired but I feel like I should work on them harder because they feel weak, which just leads to tension and the need for a full week off.

    • @banderas2000
      @banderas2000 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      i do the same. i train hard a few days. but then only take like 1 rest day. i think i'll get out of the habit if i take 3x days off. but i will try that. and i do agree with oh my arms or legs are weak i should train them harder. i FEEL IF i don't go hard or get that burn that im not really working out.

    I'm experiencing mental health issues and i suspect its due to overtraining. I've definitely plateaued and also having sleep issues. Ive increased calories and decided to rest and the result of that is utter exhaustion. Now im thinking the exhaustion is my body forcing me to take a rest.When i was lifting heavy with intensity i wasn't exhausted, more wired, flight and fight mode. That's a week now and I'm still exhausted but not as bad at first. Just doing 10 sets now heavy 5 times a week. Wondering if that's still too much and need complete rest?
