I dont want to believe the "eat more, train less" piece... but you mentioned literally every symptoms that I've been feeling during my fat loss journey
This was so great to hear. I was training 6 days a week, 1hour sessions for years. Then got hit with terrible stress. My sleep and hormones got messed up. I haven’t lifted weights in months. It’s hard to see my body lose muscle. But it came to the point I stopped gaining muscle during my final sessions. So now I’m focusing on getting my hormones back in line. Managing my stress levels and going for long walks. It seems to be working. My thyroid levels have improved. My sleep has improved. I no longer wake and stay up at 1 am. Thank you for this.
I do the sams as of now, I'm 16 train 7 days for about an hour each day and have been for a few months now. I fall asleep and wake up to use the bathroom every night then go back to bed
For the longest time I was wondering why i was having these symptoms you both were talking about. Thank you so much for putting all of the information into a eloquent presentation. This is why you guys are my favourite fitness channel!!!
I don’t know anything about fitness. But I will be forever in debt to the fitness community for being the only community who listens and gives advice on adrenal fatigue to us normies. Very grateful and so much respect. Thank you
I needed this video… this is me right now. Outputting 1500 calories a day and only eating around 2000. I’m also a 6 foot 160 lb male. Now I know why I feel this way, and I know I need to cut back on exercise and increase calories. Thank you
I am 63, was certified in personal training, been doing it for over 30 years, vo2 max of 44. I lift and cycle and my job is very physical. I cut out dairy and reduced meat dramatically in 2017 because I got diagnosed with inflammation. Inflammation is gone since 2018. Now it is low blood platelets since March. This video I am quite sure is the answer. I have the sleeping problems, low libido, my cycling times have gone down and just a feeling of malaise. I burn between 4 to 5 thousand a day. And have been eating about 2500 calories a day. I am on holiday for two weeks now so I can reboot. I have looking for the answers, not to many people have gone into the details like your guest. Great video. 👍
WOW! I really really needed this! I watched this twice and everything makes sense. Have been guilty of overtraining, not eating enough and I'm definitely starting to feel the effects of that. Thank you for this video and for having Jason on to share this knowledge. Obvi I'm subscribing and also putting my stubbornness aside as I re-evaluating my current training and nutrition. Thank you for sharing real science in a world full of bs and also in a way that makes sense!
This happened to me. My routines became and more intense and my calories didn’t adjust accordingly, so my maintenance became 2000 calories at 184 lbs and I was working out 6 days a week. I didn’t know what was happening, so this wasn’t the best approach, but I lowered by 250 and did that until I got down to 15% bf. Once I did that I increased to fine maintenance and I had to keep increasing because my metabolism was returning. I’m currently 173 and am eating 2100 and increasing each time I lose. I want to be as heavy as I can at 15% bf. If I go over, I immediately drop down just a little to get back to 15% and then start the process over of increasing. I did make it to 2250 before but gained a little on my waist, so I started over. Right now I just know maintenance is somewhere between 2050 and 2250. I will keep doing this until my body settles in and I get my true maintenance. I sleep better, have better sex, am stronger, have a better metabolism and don’t have issues with my cortisol like before. My SHBG and free test were low, but they are slowly returning to normal. I am going to make sure this never happens again because it’s absolute hell to deal with, especially when you have no clue what’s going on. More is not better, so please do not kill yourself in the gym or you will pay for it. Do just enough to stimulate, not annihilate and then get your ass out of the gym and eat enough calories to rebuild.
@@absm5186 I can eat 2900 calories now at 175 lbs 10% bf @ 5’9. My advice: Make sure you have enough fat and carbs in your diet. 45% carbs, 30% fat, 25% protein is best for the most optimal testosterone levels. Make sure you’re always hydrated. Don’t save your water drinking for your workout, because you’ll end up drinking too much at once and pee out all your electrolytes. Maybe get a good electrolyte powder like Dr. Bergs. Don’t overtrain. 5 days per week max. Don’t do high volume. I never go over 12 sets for large upper body muscles or over 9 sets for smaller upper body muscles. Progressive overload is the most important thing. Slowly start to increase calories. I recommend adding 200 per day. If your waist starts getting fatter, go back down. Keep doing everything else right and then try to go back up again. If your body is telling you it’s hungry, listen to it. You’ll lose muscle if you don’t. Sleep 8 hrs and try to keep stress low.
I honestly never thought what I'm dealing with right now is related to overtraining. I'm so glad this video was suggested to me and now everything makes sense!! I'm giving this channel a follow
Glad I found this information. Originally I starting a weight loss program on November 1, 2020 using dumb bells, stationary bike and yard work. I dropped 23 lbs in 14 weeks. I started having all of the exact same symptoms 4 weeks ago. I have 15 more pounds to lose. Time to change it up. Thank you
great info! my cortisol is through the roof right now... I just got back into the gym after 3-4 years, and went back in the gym on god mode. This was a bad decision as I was not giving my body enough time to heal from the workouts, and as a result my cortisol levels went up. I started taking extra rest days, and eating a bit more *I was eating 500-1000 below maintenance, but upped calorie intake* to hopefully curb the increase of cortisol/balance my hormones. For the first 4 weeks of getting back into the gym focus on nutrition/sleep/recovery as going all out will hurt your gains.... until body realizes that working out is the new normal again. Thanks for the great video.
I have been a fan of yours for a long time, I’m a crossfiter and a medical student and i have to say this podcast alone has been the single most valuable piece of advice I have heard in a long time. For my self and for many others.
I love your longer uploads. I feel that taking the time to explain in detail trumps the quickie videos that rule youtube. Thanks and keep up the informative topics.
I so wish I had come across this video sooner, but later's better than never as they say. For months now I've been falling asleep dead from exhaustion but waking up 3-4 times every night and end up waking up at 5-5:30 in the morning, anxious and tense... have breakfast, exercise a bit later and then feeling so tired all over again, even before 10 am. I feel sleepy, lethargic and unable to do much in the rest of my day or enjoy things I used to. I train 6 times per week, now I think I need to add one more rest day and maybe consult my nutritionist about adding a few extra calories to see if anything changes. Because I haven't been able to gain any more muscle even though I lift. Thank you so much for this video, hope it isn't too late for me and I can reverse the damage somehow. Exercise addiction is no joke, and I want to say to anyone who reads this: please don't feel guilty if you take one more rest day, listen to your body and it will reward you in return.
I found this video today and everything you describe is me. I've been researching adrenal fatigue and learned yesterday that having your left kidney removed instead of the right one for donation to my brother shuts down the adrenal gland on that side. It explains so much as the endocronlogist keep changing my thyroid meds and nothing improves. I have Hashimoto's, too. I used to work out hard on very little sleep for years and continued after the kidney operation and began to get chronic exaustion. I'm beginning to learn why now. :( Thanks for this video.
I'm an amateur boxer and I remember a few months during the first wave of covid I was prepping hard for the season however as soon as lockout came I was forced on to a short break, however during that short break my athleticism crashed immediately, my body refused to do a single pushup, or run at my previous capacity. However when I got into boxing that affect reversed immediately, I could run my previous time, do pushups, and regain my athleticism
WAIT- some one finally answered my question after ages! I’ve been yo-yo dieting for so many years and at the end of last year I crashed! Every single time I dieted, my adrenal fatigue would show up. I was sleeping poorly, thyroid issues, hair loss, muscle and joint pain, anxiety, depression, binge eating, slow metabolism basically ALL of the symptoms of Adrenal Fatigue/metabolic damage. Now, I’ve been reverse dieting and I gained fat. I’m currently over weight by 20-30 lbs. The thing that I wanted to say was that every time I cut calories too low (700 below maintenance) my heart starts palpitations because of what this guy talked about NERVE ADAPTATIONS.
This is such a great video on all levels. Covered so much information that is super relevant in todays mainstream fitness society. You guys have great camera presence, a lot of these types of sit down interviews end up having awkward moments and momentum shifts but you two killed it. Focused and relevant the whole way through. I wish i understood the importance of nutrition and hormones at an earlier age...the pillars of a healthy lifestyle regardless of fitness goals.
Thank you for this episode! 2 years in and I can't seem to push past my current plateau. This video is super informative with the clear signs to look out for...... now to figure out where to go from here to start fixing my system!
I wish I had seen this video before. This happened to me exactly the way they described when you go too low in calorie intake while working out hard. My sleep was so poor it lead me to depression and had to rely on SSRI pills to get back. Great content and thank you.
This makes me want to cry because I have been struggling with this exact issue for a few years. I was really into fasting and training really hard and then wondering why my sleep is so horrible.. I haven't been eating enough consistently, my training is often very intense, but short.. I would do a few sets of leg lunges in the morning, and even 14 hours later at night, not be able to sleep.. I know what I must do now
Omg I was so into fasting too last 2 years on and off I would not eat for 48 to 72 hours and then refeed.. I would lose 20lbs and gain back I actually did this for 2 years.. and im still at starting point. I started working out 5 to 6 days a week and got calories upto 1800 to 2000 a day. It's good I'm not losing weight just maintaining at the moment but obviously want to lose. Kind of stuck in the middle now 😬😬
This been me for a while. I'm a beast since I upped my calories and carbs. And my hair is growing faster, im finding myself having to shave more often.
I'm subscribing you guys thank you!!!! For making this video its needed because not everyone knows much about their bodies or how to figure it out certain things when it comes down to working out
If there are any adrenal issues, the only excercise recommended is walking. Later when adrenals are more recovered, a person might be able to do power walking, or strength training. Intense exercise, stresses the adrenals.
Sometimes, when life stress gets abnormally high, it can throw you into overtraining. Suddenly, your normal training load is too much. It's all about the hormones!
Wow, this makes so much sense I am a crossfit athlete and I definitely overtrain and I notice in the morning I eat and after 12 I am not hungry until 7 or 8 in the evening so I go without eating but lift and metcon 6 days a week so I know for a fact I am in this boat it has been difficult for me to eat and I am wondering how do I reboot my metabolism?
This is just PURE GOLD! It's embarrassing but im just eating about 1400 to 1500 strictly for 2 months. I go to the gym 7 days a week and just hammer it hard. This is my program. Mon - delts trap Tue - chest tri Wed - back bicep Thur - legs Fri - delts traps Sat - chest / strength day Sun back / deadlifts day Im a powerbuilder so incorporate very heavy sets each session. I have not taken a day off for almost 60 days straight. It's so boring at home and at work like the time goes so fuckin slow Lately i have been getting weaker. My 3 rep maxes went to 1 rep max. Everything is falling apart. Thank you so much for this video, i am sure im not the only one like this. I hope i can recover soon and not take a year. I will take a full 7 days off now
Take deloads if you're still facing this problem. Not working out at all for a couple weeks can put you at risk of injury. Also you may want to consider putting delts in with chest, and traps in with back. You can alternate what goes first to focus on both equally. Day A) OHP then bench, day B) Bench then OHP
How do I find someone like Jason Philips to help me with this kind of nutrition advice? Who or what should is search? Thank you thank you Great video! I learned so much!
You have to be clearer on 'too much aerobic work', I mean walking is aerobic exercise and walking is actually great recovery workout and stress relieving. You could easily walk an hour a day.
Trying to lose stubborn lower back and lower belly flab, the last bit, is having me skirting around this kind of area. I'm 5'10, 29 and trying to do this on 1800-2100 calories. I resistance train 6 days a week around 90-120 minutes and then do 45 minutes on the exercise bike and burn about 300-400 calories there, sometimes I'll go an hour and burn 600 something. It might sound like I'm doing too much, I mean it does, but I'm losing weight at a lb or two per week and have the energy to work out. It's just the side of it where I'll have 2 weeks running every so often where I feel sluggish and off the pace. I give myself a week off every 4 months (April around Easter, August and then the week of Christmas into New Year's) so info have time off, but I know I can't keep 6 days up all my life. Even though I'm young and the stuff I do is at home and not with super heavy weight (I do pull ups/chin ups with weighted sets, a lot of dips with and without weight, a lot of push ups and I am able to get two ok leg days in with the dumbbells I have and the bike all week hits them too) I still sometimes feel like it's too much for my body. As you brought up in the video, though, once you get in that mindset it's hard to convince yourself to relax a little when you need it. I have a huge appetite, so my diet is fine tuned to be as voluminous and as good on protein and nutrients as possible. I stick to it on average for 3 weeks running but sometimes, like tonight, I fall off on one day and easily fly past the 3000 calorie mark like it's nothing and I'm sat here feeling like I just ruined my week's work. Don't get me wrong, I still have a good 4 pack 😂 but the goal of getting the 'V' cut (especially on the sides where the stubborn lower back area is) feels like it always gets pushed away when I splurge one day like this. I like the saying "it's about what you eat each month, not what you eat today", so I do remind myself to relax and not beat myself up about it when it happens. It'll hurt seeing the scale a pound or two heavier on Monday morning though 😂.
Glad to hear it, my body couldn’t keep up with the work and deficit. Had all the symptoms, even now lol. I bumped up my caloric intake and let myself gain weight for a about 2 months while turning down the workouts to almost zero. Finally topped out around 250lbs, used to walk around at 215lbs but of course it was a flabby and weak compared to my 215lbs of a few years ago. Now I understand the importance of off weeks, reloads and rest days. Now, I’m starting a light caloric deficit and moderate cardio and lifting. One, down 3 lbs without over doing it.
Iv being going crazy making doctors visits. You guys have just nailed my journey. Any supplements you guys recommend? I’m male, was very muscly and now totally thin. Looking to join the gym again.
Valuable fucking info!! I train Muay Thai/MMA 5 days a week, few hours a night. Also adding weights again 3-4x a week. I’ve been smarter in my approach, but hearing early on set signs for burning out was very good to hear. I notice a lot of these symptoms at times but would always struggle to pinpoint where these issues stemmed from.
I got down to 1500 to 1700 calories a day carnivore diet and I lost 20 pounds but now I stopped losing weight and I’m holding a lot of water, and I’m exercising now. So I need to raise my calorie intake by a lot and get my metabolism back to working
Have you read Tom. Brady's book TB 12 Method? He tasks about training with pliability. Now I have just begun reading this book. But I have a feeling it will look a lot like your MAPS performance and prime.
Eli Avgi less stress, more food for recovery to get positive hormone response. Need to fix hormones, try adding 20% of your total calories and a little less stressors or working out.
I was really big on powerlifting. Over training for years. On heavy lifting days i would get so amped up i couldn't even sleep at night. Feel like I was on drugs. Fried central nervous system. Feeling like a zombie all year long
It sounds like you are describing me when you talk about this adrenal issue. Before, I somehow thought these symptoms had something to do with a chemical imbalance
This is fantastic information that I've never heard before. I believe the cursing and "dudes" detract from the message and the speaker's authority as an expert. The speaker would benefit from eliminating these.
I dont want to believe the "eat more, train less" piece... but you mentioned literally every symptoms that I've been feeling during my fat loss journey

Thank you!
This should be getting a lot more views
You guys saved my life , For real! Thank you 🙏
I swear - best fitness channel on the internet.
This has been eye opening for me. Thank you.
If there are any adrenal issues, the only excercise recommended is walking. Later when adrenals are more recovered, a person might be able to do power walking, or strength training. Intense exercise, stresses the adrenals.
Great Podcast, recovery is just as important as your workouts.
Thank you so much for putting this up! I feel a bunch more prepared to help a prospective client with this adaptation ❤️
Great content and straight to the facts! Thank you guys!!!
Thanks for the video… brought me a lot of clarity.
Top interview! Thanks for sharing!
Loving these videos!! 💯 you guys are by far my favorite in the podcast and TH-cam world 💕
I’m so glad I found this one ❤
One of your very best- I only hope that those at risk will get this superbly presented important info. Thanks !
This video is on the money talking about this issue.
This is just PURE GOLD! It's embarrassing but im just eating about 1400 to 1500 strictly for 2 months. I go to the gym 7 days a week and just hammer it hard.
This is my program.
Mon - delts trap
Tue - chest tri
Wed - back bicep
Thur - legs
Fri - delts traps
Sat - chest / strength day
Sun back / deadlifts day
Im a powerbuilder so incorporate very heavy sets each session.
I have not taken a day off for almost 60 days straight. It's so boring at home and at work like the time goes so fuckin slow
Lately i have been getting weaker.
Taking Cortisol Manager and L-Theanine at night, brings down cortisol levels in order to be able to sleep.
How do I find someone like Jason Philips to help me with this kind of nutrition advice? Who or what should is search? Thank you thank you
Great video! I learned so much!
This video was amazing, I found it so relevant. Asking ALL the right questions and answers.
Great information! One of the best videos I have seen
I know so many people, who freezes despite normal room temperature.
Me and couple younger colleagues have no problems.
For anyone with a slow metabolism, ginger is a good herb. Add some to your breakfast.
great talk, very insightful
What about extended fasting? Studies have shown it raises BMI and speed up metabolism.
Great info; thank you guys!!
Awesome video Sal!
Priceless information. Thanks heaps guys
Squatting everyday for a month straight destroyed me for over 2 years. Constant fatigue.
Thanks, I really enjoy your content!
Wow just wow, mindpump is spitting gospel
Great video. Mentally I dont like it, but I need to eat more to recover better. Needs over wants!
Love it! Great work guys, these information need to be repeated again and again to the world. A lot of people will benefit from this.
I got down to 1500 to 1700 calories a day carnivore diet and I lost 20 pounds but now I stopped losing weight and I’m holding a lot of water, and I’m exercising now. So I need to raise my calorie intake by a lot and get my metabolism back to working
Fantastic breakdown!
2 more videos with Jason dropping this week...stay tuned!
Great information--thanks !
Great video
Have you read Tom. Brady's book TB 12 Method? He tasks about training with pliability. Now I have just begun reading this book. But I have a feeling it will look a lot like your MAPS performance and prime.
please gointo more depth on this, its literally the problem ive been facing for the past 6 months
Thanks for info. Hope my wife listens now
This is fantastic information that I've never heard before. I believe the cursing and "dudes" detract from the message and the speaker's authority as an expert. The speaker would benefit from eliminating these.
Thanks so much
I needed this. Ty
The body keeps the score. Great info. I like the swearing. Makes this shit more relatable.

I recommend a step tracker and doing ur best to eat back calories from exercise
Wish I could like this video more than once
