    Super Stihl 038 Magnum is a quality chainsaw I have a 24 inch bar on mine and a tungsten chain today. Purchased in 1995 and cutting still with it in 2019 Australian red gum and pine trees. I am on the land. A quality Stihl chain saw. I call it the big bastard. With care it keeps on going thanks to Stlihl quality and service with parts. Also I have a Stihl MS 170 that I call a little girlie screamer for little cuts. Stihl Magnum 038 is a tough piece of mechanics big on cutting only hard when to start on pulling to start... jarring on my old hands. Love Stihl. Keep on cutting...yea!
    Stihl is quality.
    Stihil 038 Magnum is a classic. I run it still:)

      Starting problems & kickback ......use race fuel 100, or 105 octane & 50:1 mix .Redline smokeless or Redline kart oil .
      Check & keep plug clean, gap correctly , only pull start with thick leather gloves . Or fit the newer Stihl absorption handle like on 088/ MS881 etc.
      My 038 MAG rarely kicks now.

      @@ianworcester4640 Thanks for you contribution will take note about the mixture and newer Stihl absorption handler. My 038 is always fully serviced and since 1995 going strong. Tomorrow, 3rd January 2023 more cutting. I know the unit well and I have thick leather gloves get the old girl going with my foot on the handle during prime and when she is warm no worries. My Stihl MS170 is always there for easy work! Cutting up old river red gums sheep yards with metal contamination a great job just look for wire, nails, staples etc. Great wood to burn as we are in winter now.

    Hi,
    I purchased this saw about 12 years ago from a farmer and showed little usage. I have only used it once about 6 years ago. Was cutting up some fire wood and the thing lost all its power - bogged out and began to smoke quite a bit. I fired it up last year, first time since the mentioned incidence, and it sounded ok however I notices when I put it down it was leaking fuel. I do what you suggested and see how it goes. Thanks for the reply SK.

    • @CloudfeatherRusticWorks
      @CloudfeatherRusticWorks 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Late reply but it likely has a gummed up carb from sitting for so long. Also, the fuel lines can deteriorate and start leaking. Mine actually started leaking from the seam in the handle. I cleaned it up really well, used some acetone to remove contaminates and JB welded the seam. No leaks since.

      There’s a slotted screw underneath the saw to adjust oil flow

    Why are you pulling the cord when you are turning the engine off? There is no need to do that...

    • @rickygarrett3786
      @rickygarrett3786 9 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      adynegrean as a matter of fact there is. it prevents the recoil mechanism from catching and damaging the recoil cogs

    • @christianbenfell2715
      @christianbenfell2715 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ricky Garrett I was told by my saw shop that because the pawls are on the recoil assembly and not the flywheel, this is pointless.
      For instance, a McCulloch has pawls on the flywheel that are driven by the recoil pulley. The manual states pulling the cord when turning off the saw will prevent damage.
      As far as I know, it doesn’t apply to Stihl.

    • @lucaslounsbury8515
      @lucaslounsbury8515 ปีที่แล้ว

      To be fair. Needs it or not it hurts nothing and is good practice for when you’re holding a saw that does benefit from it down the road.

  • @bespokefencing
    @bespokefencing 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Why pull the rope when you stop it?
    That's a German spec saw, not a McCulloch, it shouldn't go into reverse on shutdown!
    Or am I missing something?
    Interesting video though.
