    Excellent as always Tinman. Good pointers to watch out for. Vintage saws do take more time as it is hard to source parts. People who have parts tend to not want to give them up as they know they are unatanium (like you always say) or they gouge you for the part. I think it's the coolest thing to revive these old saws. The quality and craftsmanship put into the vintage models is what makes them unique and special. In todays world of fast food products and assembly line items you just don't get the nostalgia like the old stuff. Same with cars, truck, bikes, fridges, wood stoves and on and on. It will be a shame when these items are all in the land fill. People now days just don't appreciate history and vintage stuff until it's all restored and shiny then they want it for nothing, most don't appreciate it or the work that went into it to get it there. But it is what it is. Thanks for sharing TC Tinman Mahalo 🤙🤙🤙

    I tried using Tygon on snowmobile impulse hoses. It worked until the engine heated up and it started collapsing and expanding instead of pulsing the pump. 5-10 miles.

    So helpfull. Im rebuilding my Ms381 in South Africa and your 038 series has been brilliant. You often refer to yourself as a "Jack of all trades and a master of non". I think the original saying applies to you better. "A jack of all trades is a master of none, but oftentimes better than a master of one" cheers and thanks again.

Thanks for all the tips, I cut, split 12-cords per year with my 562. Hang in there brother and thanks for your time! 👍

    Using mine for bucking. It’s made in Brazil, no idea how old. I like your idea of putting a grommet in the tank with plain old fuel line through vs proprietary lines. I’m going to pop apart my air filter, I bet that spring is weak. Great video!

    Hi Tinnman!!😀😀
    The one's made in Brazil are newer.
    The 028 farm boss and 028 super also have the same type of a choke on them. I have never had a problem with them not working properly. Except for one time a spring broke on one. Between my dad and I have had at least ten 028's and 038's over the years. They were probably my favorite saws back in the day when they were new. Then they came out with the 044 and I fell in love with them. I'm still running ms460s and actually have bought a Farmertec huztl 388 just so I have one again. It's been a good saw so far.
    Take care my friend!!😀😀👍👍💚💚

    I have the older one with the metal tank. Love it!!!!
    I run it stock, with a 20 inch bar and standard chain. And yes, the air filter can be a weak spot, but mine works fine. Just worried because mine is of the older OEM filters that is just made of wire mesh, I clean it after every use.

  • @LeifDjurfeldt

    And yes, the 038 is still made in brazil, but has evolved to the 382.
    Now the standard model is a 72cc saw, just like the old magnum.
    Lovely saws the 382!!

    Iv noticed on a few 038mags fines find their way into the carb. Iv used grease with success.I'm wondering Tinman after you have used the saw and when its ready for a filter clean if you could have a look down the carburetor and see if theirs any fines?Perhaps its just been the way I tighten up the filter or I'm missing a plate.

    I have an acquaintance who, was on the crew who restored log structures in Yellowstone NP. He had been working everyday with saws. For 42 years. then he got complacent and dang near cut his leg off. As it was, the wound damned near killed him for bleeding. Moral to the story is PAY ATTENTION at all times. Stop these idiotic starting methods. if you don't NEED bar and chain for the "thing" you are working on, Take the bar and chain OFF

  • @neilcurtis2741
    @neilcurtis2741 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    My 038 the lever wouldn’t engage the choke properly it would just bind up. It was missing that metal piece behind it and needed that shim out to connect right. Also had a tillotson hk on it but ended up ordering a new oem bing carb for it the tilly wouldn’t run good for whatever reason

    Yea man, spot on w regards to air filter/choke pos. would b a better saw if ya could use the profilter w separate choke blade. we used to have our AV as a backup to the backup when we did fire wood. backup was an old Mac 850 w a cyl score so big one would think we were spraying for skeeters. 38av was min on torque at 9800ft and temper mental on ultra sharp "blades". not enough torque for 2ft curls on aspen. prob better at flat lander alt.

  • @edwingroening5087
    @edwingroening5087 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Haha I stretched the spring a little for the choke to work better, only to find out it choked itself at high rpm😅 bad deal, so I replaced the spring from an 026 air filter and pull more on a cold start.

  • @yxzify

    Great video! How about cutting off the middle part of the old fuel line that seals against the housing and build a grommet out of it, that allows that your yellow hose to pass through, so you may use this one as makeshift-fuel line 🤔
    I‘d cut the middle part out and open up the hole - most probably with a sharp drill… a socket in the right size may help to hold the grommet in place during a drilling attempt.

    I currently have 4 running 038s - 2 x 038 Supers I fully rebuilt and a magnum I fully rebuilt plus an original 038 Super with metal rear handle. Stay clear of aftermarket air filters on them. Every one I have tried had mal-formed choke butterflys that wouldnt seal properly or crap springs. Swapping over an original Stihl butterfly works well (if you happen to still have it.... Stihl clutches are getting hard to come by for these saws so gather up any used spares you can find.

    • @alexpearson8481
      @alexpearson8481 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks great advise. I have just one 038, immaculate condition. Prob only has 15 - 20 hours. You have me concerned with the clutches, does Stihl still list them? Any idea how many hours a clutch on these will last? (I use my saws so little may never have to worry - but I’m a perfectionist and may ramp up down the road)

      All the 038 hard parts are available, because the ms380 and 381 are very similar to the 038, and was only recently discontinued as a production saw, in which the 382 replaced it.

    Great video as always. I have the exact same saw, and I haven’t had it for very long and I had to replace the handle but I just cannot get for the life of me on the black tube back into the handle that goes into the cylinder. So if somebody could link me to a good video of somebody, putting it back on, I live out in the country so I’d rather not go into town to get it fixed.

  • @shaner67

    Tinmaaaaan, strange irony with your video today. I built a 038 magnum Brazilian model a couple months back. New piston, rings seals and an aftermarket fuel tank/handle. a scuff on the intake and opened the exhaust a couple degrees to 99°. Finally put it in the wood last weekend and had trouble getting it started so a wee splash of fuel and away it went. Had an issue with the re start and now know where to look to the aftermarket air filter. The choke didn't feel right off the bat so the info you provided makes perfect sense and the timing is impeccable.. Thank you for all the tips and tricks as always my Canadian brother.. All the best to you and the Mrs n baby.. SLANT'E

    I would think stihl could make a little more money if they weren't so against selling parts through anyplace other than stihl dealers. I do have to appreciate a company that is so supportive of their dealers but c'mon, after they discontinue or replace a specific model IMO they should allow their parts to be more easily available!

      My 038 is a little bit older. The markings are different, the tag says "038AV Magnum II Electronic Quickstop". The manual that came with it has a copyright date of 1985. It's made in West Germany and Germany was reunited in late 1990. So I'm going with 1985-90 on my saw, until I look up the serial number that is.
