Greetings from Sydney, Australia! Excellent job you did on that saw. The customer is very lucky to have such a skilled technician work on their (very nice) 038 Super.
Best wishes from Upper Bavaria! I am currently trying to repair a Stihl 044, probably > 30 years old. The videos are so straightforward and really helpful.
Hi and Gday from sunny Queensland , Australia , thank you , i have been binging some your vids , very handy info , cos i just bought a new saw, so will have no fear if/when i need to fix it , cheers
Used to have a 038 super. Weighed about the same as a small truck but bulletproof and wood go all day and night. Back in the day when Stihl made quality machines.
Your 038 super starts way easier than my 038 super pro from 1988! This video is definitely going into my library for future reference. Thank you Erica.
It’s so great to see ladies doing what was traditionally man’s work and doing it well. That having been said it is even better to have a video that you can easily understand what is being done and why it is being done. For people like me, who are hearing deficient, not having to try and separate background noise like music, fans, vacuum cleaners to confuse my ears is a godsend! Thank you. I have subscribed.
I'm glad you could hear it well - I now make sure to turn the compressor and furnace off in the shop before doing any filming. The slightest noise in the background can sure ruin the audio. Thanks for being here!
Xlogger here, so I'm fairly well experienced on chainsaw maintenance and repairs. You are methodical, thorough, and could work on my firewood saws anytime.
Great old saw! I have an 038 MAG II. I have a copy of one made in China too. I have never even fueled it. They are heavy saws, and I am not getting any younger.
The two videos I've watched so far are the most informative I have seen on the Internet. Thank you! My Stihl 029 was hard to start from day one. Once running, it started fine, first pull. After about 12 years it became extremely difficult to start, and, if turned off, wouldn't start. I changed the tubing, filter and carb. Sort of back the way it was. Changed ignition module and it started in a couple pulls. Worked great one season. Now, is difficult to start again. This winter, I warmed it up on a heater before trying to start and that helped. There isn't a gap adjustment for the ignition/magneto - just two bolts without slots. I did my best to gap both ends. My next thing was going to be a carb adjustment. I assume it was a tank vent as you showed but I don't recall it. Will probably replace fuel filter, air filter and spark plug just to be sure. I don't have a hand pump, carb block but have gasket material -- will look into these items. I run the saw empty if it won't be used in a day or two. Great videos! I don't trust the local chain saw shop. They just want to sell new chains. I put the saw in and it didn't work any better than when I put it in. So, I reluctantly have to work on mine.
good video, and at 16:31 it's because this process discovers if you have reed valves (two stroke) or plain sprung valves (4 stroke), like a car engine, the reed valves operate in one direction, and this tests them to.
This is some really good info... I have this exact saw, new in 1984. It's been worked very hard for many years, and now has been relegated to occasional use. It is a really good saw, but has a few quirks... I'm confident it still has the original fuel tank vent, fuel line, and filter... Probably would be a good idea to maintenance them, being the saw is 40 years old now...
So I realized my 32 year old 036 wouldn’t run right occasionally . I finally found that my choke rod lever o the carb would drag on the back of the air filter. This was on more than one filter. I had to grind a tiny bit away on a couple spots with my Dremel and all was good. As far as I know these were original Stihl air filters. Passing this along to others that could run into this.
How have you become that skilled ? Some tech- school or learned by Stihl ? For how long have you worked with saw's ? I must say you are really Pro-skilled.... love how you explain every detail in repair-process. Thx for excellent videos. 👏👏👏👏👏
My 036 pro was giving me trouble like this for months and it turned out to be the little wire you mentioned with the cut that was shorting and grounding out, which is how the switch turns it off. I took it in to my Stihl guy who didn’t catch it first. A little piece of tape fixed it.
I started watching this channel a few weeks ago and quickly became a fan! I've seen maybe 10 videos, and I notice a very methodical and logical approach to diagnosing problems and complaints; always starting with basics and then addressing the various systems of the saws. Great explanations and the new camera to look into the cylinder is quite helpful! Erica's approach is intelligent, reassuring and confident. Thanks for your professionalism and calming manner! - Joe - Western MA, USA
You mean....I'm not the only one who struggles with those darn throttle (and choke) linkages on chainsaws? (The only things I dread about messing with chainsaws!). What a thorough and conscientious job you do! Great job! My first time viewing this channel, but I can safely say that you are the BEST!
Oh this channel is going to take off... Just hang in there. Been a good while since I've run across an even tone, straight forward presentation with knowledge and good best practices. 6.04K subscribers. I have another video in another tab. It already shows 6.05K subscribers... I am not surprised.
Thanks for showing how simple it is to do the crankcase test. I've never done that and I need to do it on a couple of my old saw and trimmer engines. Really like how the Stihl engines are designed. Getting to the fuel line and etc. on some of my engines of different brands are really not designed very well.
Beautiful saw, just don't make them like that any more. Good job on the diagnosis, I just picked up a MityVac that I used to check the seals on my Stihl 036. Enjoy your channel.
Merci beaucoup
So the youtube algorithm pointed your video to me and I'm glad it did. I really enjoyed watching you troubleshoot and diagnose the repairs on that 038. Very nice saws. I had a couple of those in the past. Also, if you notice there's a small hole right in front of the tank vent hose. The hole is for the end of the hose to go through so it stays out of the way of everything else under the filter cover. Ask me how I know!! Keep up the great work and I'll be subbing your channel❤❤❤❤
I love to see a mechanically minded woman work, as I am blessed to have married one 38 years ago. Your thorough diagnosis and repair should be inspiring to all other small engine mechanics. Keep up the good work sister! 😊
One thing I didn't hear mentioned is that the Stihl fuel lines are prone to rot if you use ethanol gas. They look pretty much normal to the naked eye but the rubber is honeycombed, which allows the carb to suck air as well as fuel, which leans out the mixture. I've worked on many "communal use" saws (meaning they were owned by a company with many employees who used the saws but didn't do anything to maintain them) that suffered from a rotted fuel line. The users would buy normal gas for the saws and then the lines would rot out. Make sure you use premium gas with no ethanol in these saws.
Excellent tutorial. Thank you. I am working on rebuilding 3 old Stihl 048 yet I cannot find any complete rebuild tutorials. a heavy saw yet great when going. more parts seem available in Canada so postage to Australia adds a bit to cost in doing them up.
Loved the video. I have a O38 AV Magnum 2, I purchased new in the mid-80's. Very little use on the saw due to a injury ( not related to the saw ). Am unable to find Stihl 40:1 oil. I ordered a 2.6 Oz bottle of STA-BIL 40:1/50:1 full synthetic. I did rebuild the Bing carburetor five years ago from sitting to long. The saw is basically new. I sure don't want to burn her up. You have a new subscriber. Keep up the good work.
It was great that you checked the crank case seals, but you never stated it was what you were checking......and a quick mention that some seals won't leak till the saw is hot would be helpful for those learning troubleshooting
What a great video. Like your style of video and the thorough explanation of what you are doing. Maybe you can also explain a bit why you do certain checks based on the symptoms. I think it is completely clear to you but I am a novice ;-). Keep up the good work! All the best from the Netherlands.
Good Job: A couple things... With enlightened customers, 1st thing we do is take the muffler off and check the screen. 2nd we take a digital closeup picture of the cylinder and piston. This covers us if the customer starts tweeking on the screws and runs it lean and burns it up. We print the picture and attach it to the repair order and save the picture for evidence if the saw comes back, this covers our butt. Working on the carb with it in your hand is asking for trouble. One of my mechanics ended up in the ER with a screwdriver stuck in his palm. What was bad was the dirty screwdriver embedding the dirt deep in his hand. He was out for weeks clearing up the infection. I don't wish that on anyone.
It looked like the had Stihl Moto Mix in the tank. Replacing fuel line and filter are two things that I do as a first choice. Fortunately problems.. I check gas tanks and fuel lines at 7 psi with my Mighty Vac. Echo tank vents make good replacements for Stihl tank vents. I also check tank vents at 7 psi.
nice video. not sure how you came into my feed. haven't watched chicanic in some time either. lots of 2vintage tho. will likely need to do some maintenance on my husqvarna 450 (455?) rancher this spring. not feeling intimidated too much. quick clean / inspec / plug / air filter / fuel filter.... thanks for the upload
Thanks excellent video. Have you ever noticed any choke issues with a 038 mag II? The choke on this series of saws seems to be sometimes a show stopper.
Hi! I have seen this many times. The choke is inside the air filter. I would recommend replacing the air filter with a new OEM from Stihl (I have seen these air filters aftermarket and they didn't operate properly). Sometimes you have to replace the air filter AND the control shaft, due to age and wear. Those two parts tend to go hand in hand. I hope this helps! :)
Hi! Thanks for being here! All the tools I use can be bought from a Stihl dealer. A saw can get fried (scored) several ways - wrong fuel mix, carburetor issues, plugged tank vent, cracked fuel line, cracked impulse line, leaking crank seals, torn intake boot, etc....the pressure/vac test I did on this saw ruled out many of these possibilities. Being that this saw is older (80's or 90's) I felt it was a good idea to perform some quick tests.
Very true! I wasn't clear enough in what I was saying. I was trying to explain all the points of entry that I had to seal up - not all the leaks I was looking for. I will be more clear during my next pressure / vac test.
You had a Bing diaphragm in stock? I am impressed! (40 plus year Stihl tech in WNY). Great video showing how it is really done. Other than the inlet lever adjustment, I felt they were one of the best carburetors/
The bottom bolts should be 6mm, as I remember. The top two are 5 mm, as I remember. I use a soapy water mix as a press fluid for rubber parts. Just Dawn and water.
I'm surprised that these spark arrestor screens are only in North America. I'm from Croatia and I have MS230 and MS311. MS230 from 2005 and MS311 bought last year. None of them have spark arrestor. Last year exhaust fell apart on 230 bought a new one and installed and it still doesn't have spark arrestor...

Yep every video a gem well presented, and clearly explained, excellent work....

It’s great to watch such a thorough saw repair

The saw started that quickly when it had no fuel in the lines yet! LOL! I learned a few things! Thanks! Great video.
Thanks for watching!

.well done. Were can a person get those stihl tools. How would saw get fried.
Air intake considerations also include head gasket and crank bearing seals!
