Cherry 038 Mag - My Carburetor Adjustment Method

    It seems that there are many methods of carb adjustment styles out there. Some even with the cylinder cover off and air filter not correctly secured.
    The saw needs to be fully assembled - as if you were going to actually be using it - to properly set the low and high speed circuits.
    I do not have a 32" bar hanging on this 038 as it would be used to fell timber with because we are at the shop. The idea/method is exactly the same though.
    I have been adjusting the carburetors on my work saws this way since in the early 80's this way. They run a little on the rich side utilizing this style. I have never lost a cylinder assembly due to seizure until the purposeful melt down on my 346 doing some R&D work a couple of weeks ago.
    I am currently available for port work. If you are interested in some custom saw modifications, please shoot me an email.

    I run a woodsported 038 Magnum with a 30 inch SugiHara bar and a Oregon full skip chain, here in Germany. It cuts like hell. There are not so many ported saws in Germany, I only know one guy here who's doing that like u do in Amerika. Great skills, great jobs and very helpfull.

    I have an 038 magnum and I absolutely love it. Mine doesn’t have the av though. It is pretty cool to see a video about one from you! I am extremely impressed with your knowledge and skills when it comes to chainsaws! Other than a small amount of firewood and cleaning fence lines I don’t have a ton of use for a chainsaw but watching you makes me really wish I did! Thanks for the extremely informative videos, I always look forward to the next one!

    Hi thanks for your help before.I'm after more advice.I notice when I take air filter of the 038magnum there are alot of fines sawdust around the carberetor throat and a touch inside.Im not sure if the touch inside is because it falls of the air filter when I take it of for it just sits at the entrance and I cant see any done the throat.But nevertheless there is a heap of dust around the entrance.I notice on some ipl there is a plate that goes on the carb then on others there isnt.Mine didnt have it and out of the 4 038magnums i have they dont either.Is this a fault as in common for the 038mag to get so much sawdust around the back of the carburetor? the air filter looks to me that it does indeed match up mate up to the flatt surface of the carb so im not sure whats going on.

    Hey man, I’m a climber/cutter an my plan for when I get hurt or old is to be a saw Mechanic. I’ve been setting my low jet by ear listing for “sweet “spot while the saw idles an I turn the low jet pin. I guess what I’m trying to ask is their a better method for setting the low jet ? Or something more precise? My saws run well an part of that is thanks to your content. I want them to run perfect

      Tyler hi.
      Belated -
      This video explains with the engine sound what has worked for me in multiple decades.
      There should not be a bunch of the standard 2-cycle da ding ding going on as the saw comes off high idle.
      Conversely, it should not stammer off idle when getting up to speed.
      There is no way for me to run or hear your equipment to offer a suggestion.
      I thought that was is shown here encompasses a good base line for the viewers.
      Thanks for watching.

    Hi Iv been watching your video's for a few years now thanks for putting them up great work and information. I am trying to diagnose a few 038magnums wondering if you could help? When testing fuel tank,fuel vent.on a stihl 038 magnum should the vaccum test on the fuel tank slowly come down? also what about when you put pressure in the tank should it hold or slowly go down? I have 3 038magnums and each one is reading differently. One saw wont hold pressure or vacuum cannot pump it up at all. The other saw holds pressure constant and leaks down with vacuum slowly.Then the other saw on pressure is slowly goes from 7.5psi down and the same with vaccum.Would love to to a video of testing old 2grub screw tank vents.Or if no time for a video advice from yourself with som much skill and knowlege would be fantastic.Thanks.

    • @hotsaws101
      @hotsaws101  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      rabbitatethefox hi.
      Yes, on the slowly down.
      Your going to get different readings if the vents are not all the same age and run time. Might just get slightly different reads anyway.
      I put a brand new one in that was bad one time.
      You want leakdown under vacuum to happen. Otherwise the saw/s will act as if there is an air leak after a bit of operation.
      They should not really bleed out under low pressure. The down and dirty method is to completely fill the tank and set the saw out in the sun. It shouldn't leak fuel, from anywhere. If you watch it and it does leak fuel, usually that helps to find the source.
      There is either a hole somewhere or the vent has malfunctioned if the one won't hold some vacuum and no pressure. Assuming that the needle in the carb is doing it's job here..
      It's going to leakdown super quick if there is a perforation in the line, the vent is clapped out or the tank has a small hole.
      Good luck deciphering.
      Thanks for watching.

    I have been working on my 038 Mag ii and it seems the Bing carb isn't adjusting properly. At WOT, she ramps way up after a few seconds, while not in the wood; so I release throttle. This happens throughout the range of the HI needle adjustment... I've not experienced this on any other saws before.
    I settled on about 1 3/8 turn open on both needles, but she bogs down/power loss about mid-cut on a16" log.
    Previous owner ran ethanol fuel, fwiw, and I ran Seafoam through cylinder and carb to clean things up.
    Ideas?

    • @hotsaws101
      @hotsaws101  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      cameronb76 hi.
      Belated -
      Surely you have figured it out by now.
      If not, it sounds like your carb has an issue or two.
      It is really hard to "tell over the phone" exactly how your saw behaves.
      I would be installing a new carb kit and making sure it was well sealed upon installation.
      It that doesn't work, better get a pressure & vacuum check.
      Best of luck.
      Thanks for watching.

    Mr jack. My ol man has this same exact saw he's almost 70 n has a hard time getting it started and wanted a decomp valve put in it and I was wondering where would you put one if you had a customer request one on that specific saw?

  • @1d1hamby
    @1d1hamby 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    So I'm on information overload. This modified saw without a small bar and chain gets leaned out more after you put the small bar and chain on? This you do to raise the rpms to around 15k? So does this mean it runs richer with a small bar and chain than with a 32"? Or does it not get leaned out more to run at 15k when you put the larger bar and chain on?

    • @hotsaws101
      @hotsaws101  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      d hamby hi. The chain has a parasitic drag component that pulls the engine down as compared to without a bar & chain. If you are looking to have a saw run at "x" rpm with a the b & c then it will actually run at a higher rpm without the drag of the chain.
      The "richer or leaner" concept is a direct result of the operator input and carburetor tuning. You tune the saw for the atmospheric conditions and with the bar & chain installed, ready to work. If the saw was set up initially to pull a 42 and you then switched to a 32 then it most likely will need a high speed needle adjustment. This is a direct result of the parasitic drag (or lack thereof with less drivers) associated with the chain.
      The saw will run at a higher rpm with a short bar if it was tuned originally with a long bar. It may or may not be to lean at that point. When going from a short to long bar, the opposite is true.
      I probably did not get it out in the most concise way in the video, sorry.
      Hope this additional info helps.

    • @hotsaws101
      @hotsaws101  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      d hamby hi. Having a slight burble or miss at high idle, with the bar & chain installed and ready to cut, is how I tune a working saw. I don't look for the max rpms through the to lean point.
      Two different states of tune will have the same saw running at different rpms at high idle. It's about having a slight miss, then the saw will run well and hold up - if the operator takes care of their part.
      Thanks.

    • @1d1hamby
      @1d1hamby 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      hotsaws101, That's a good point not to hit the lean point, a lot of damage can happen very quickly. You just sneak up on a rpm that you know works well for that saw? Slight burble with the chain out of the wood and no burble when cutting? Plus keeping an eye on plug and screen colors. Kind of the way I've been doing it. Need a new tach though, mine seems too inconsistent.

    • @hotsaws101
      @hotsaws101  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      d hamby - Usually they will have a slight miss in the cut as well when you back off on the feed a little. Back in the day, with my 084s, 394s, 288s, 045s, etc,. etc. you could relieve some of the pressure on the feed and they "wood" burble a fuzz with the throttle wide open. Never roached a topend (some mechanical DNFs ) when tuned that way.

    From the information I've gathered it seems to be the amount of fuel being burned that needs to be addressed and not so much the rpms? Is this true in your experience or is there different cases for each saw? What are your thoughts on the decision making process?

    • @hotsaws101
      @hotsaws101  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      d hamby hi. I am curious to see where that information is coming from?
      The second question was looked at in your other post from the same day further down in this thread.
      If the saw is tuned right for the atmospheric conditions & chain, the chain is sharp, the stops are set correctly, the plug doesn't have a worn electrode, and the air filter is clean then the saw (cutting) will be about as efficient as one could expect.
      I tune a work saw to have a slight burgle (miss) at high idle.

      Brett hi. Are you talking about a stock saw? It would depend on a few factors. Need some more information.
      Thanks for watching.

      Dirk hi. It's a Pulse. Had I for awhile. You might consider a web search. Both Stihl and Husqvarna have a good one available through the shop. Thanks for watching.

      Appalachian Stihlhunter ll, We,,, I build "sleepers" purposefully. Especially if a customer wants an unassuming animal of a saw to beat up on the mouthy "brother-in-law", father-in-law, etc. etc. With that, this saw is seen handling a 461 with ease in another video on this channel. Guess you missed that one....

    I would recommend against revving a saw WOT without bar and chain.

    • @hotsaws101
      @hotsaws101  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      SNELLERIZED GARAGE - Again, who is the "I" exactly? I mean really, let's just get it out in the open.
      Also again, this a demonstration on carb tuning. It doesn't hurt a saw to have a few wide open throttle blasts without a bar and chain as long as the carb is fat on the high - which it was here. This was already addressed in the other post you made - which it sure would have been tidy to continue the saga there..... Since it seems like there will be an interchange or two in this process.

      SNELLERIZED GARAGE - Nope. But you definitely have a thing or two to hide. Unfortunate.

  • @SNELLERIZED
    @SNELLERIZED 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Why are you running this saw WOT without a B&C? BTW, I'd like to see a 038 running 15,500 with a 32" bar.

    • @hotsaws101
      @hotsaws101  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      SNELLERIZED GARAGE - Because there is no need and my bench doesn't have a curf taken out of it... This was for demonstration on carb tuning. This method will work with any length of bar or sans a bar - and the high speed needle will be in a little different position for all of them. I also stated that it is done, "barred up", when a guy is out in the wild blue yonder getting ready to saw on something.
      I had mentioned (although not as concise as it should have been) ~ 7:00 in the video that the end result would be a little higher if a guy tunes it with out a bar & chain and then bars the saw up.
      In all actuality, without a bar and chain to get the same rpms on a saw the high speed needle will be out further (more fat) than with a bar & chain mounted because there is parasitic drag from the chain in the bar groove, drivers contacting the sprocket in the nose, weight of the chain itself, the bearings that the sprocket rotate on, etc. that has to be compensated for. This requires that the high speed needle has be adjusted in further (more lean) to get the engine to spin the same rpm number as the saw will without a bar & chain.
      That will be addressed in a later video.
      Garage. Do you have some kind of a shop of something?
      Thanks for watching.
