I would say "video or it never happened". However, people were just that good at games back In the day and that's pretty awesome. So I jest in the opener.
Great video. This was one of the hardest games I completed. The arcade version didnt fuck around. For me, difficulty wise, Ghost N Goblins arcade took me around 11 hours to complete both required loops and this game took me around 25 hours. I never came across any brick walls in GNG but this game had a few bosses that I couldnt put a dent in for many hours. Considering its only a 30 minute game and has unlimited continues it was surprisingly dense.
I loved this game, I used to play it all the time at the mall. I still think the toughest end boss was Wolf Chief Shotgun. Very historically accurate with the old buildings and the Indian village.
An interesting piece of history from CAPCOM. I met this title thanks to the CAPCOM Generations Vol. 4 compilation on the original PlayStation. Because I grew up with that home console with other CAPCOM titles like Mega Man X5, Resident Evil 3, Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter, among others.
A childhood friend of mine had the Amstrad version and I thought it was the greatest game Ever and those Popcorn sound effects on the Spectrum..😄😄 Another great video my friend on one of my top 10 arcade games Ever.
I got my first job in 1986 at the age of 15 working as a telemarketer (crap job I know but the money was great at the time). It was in an office building located next to the Greyhound Bus station in my hometown. They had a Gun.Smoke cabinet in the bus station that I would go play on my breaks. The NES version also took up a fair amount of the Summer of '88 for me. I love this game and still play it sometimes on my favourite emulator. As of 2023 I still have not finished it. Great video, PatmanQC!
This will always be one of my favorite Capcom shmups. It had great music, neat controls with the five-way shooting plus the left+right spread shot I always forgot to use, and was just doggone hard as nails. The NES version is fantastic, too. Even the weird stylising of its name as "Gun.Smoke" seemed oddly cool to me. Gotta say, the edits for the German version are pretty darned cool -- especially the 7th boss, Goldsmith, pulling a _Westworld_ by exposing the robot insides of his face.
This was one of the first games I played when I was 5, with my then 17 year-old cousin. He died 6 years ago, but I will always be grateful as he showed me many of the greats from the NES, including Punch Out, Legend of Zelda 1 and 2, Double Dragon, Ninja Gaiden, Castlevania, etc.
What a coincidence! I have been listening to the old radio Gunsmoke shows on sirius xm and I remember playing this game as well. Thanks for sharing the history on this!

Ha, "Steer" clear of the Bull. ;) Also adding The Gun on PS2, as well as Sunset Riders too. This game, Gunsmoke, was very challenging. Commando was a lot of fun and easier to handle IMO vs the 3 buttons here. That's something about his hand breaking and using a red pen to draw. 10 stages, but I struggle to get past the first 2. Nice going, Patman!
On the NES, you could put in a code to make the cowboy shoot the direction you were facing. Turns out, the old control scheme was superior and made you want to switch back instantly.
This is one of gaming's true OG run n' gun games, and was one of my favorites from the period. I always loved the design of this game, as the western theme was just something that you never saw done well at the time. While Patman puts this in a category with Ghost n Goblins as far as difficulty goes, I would say this game is much harder. I've finished most versions of the G&G series, but Gunsmoke is on another level of hard AF. LOL
I concur, I spent too many summers at the arcades during my youth getting good at this game. One correction about the NES version wanted posters. Some of the shopkeepers on the stages also sell the wanted poster, so you dont have always just find it in the stage.
I love this game. It was in my local arcade in the U.K. back in the eighties. That was the only place I ever came across it so I don’t think it was very common. When I first came across Gun.Smoke in a Local Arcade... I really enjoyed it - But it did have an issue... It wasn't an OG Cabinet, obviously the arcade had only bought the board to save costs and installed it into a Spare Cabinet... ... So what was the issue? It was a TWO BUTTON CABINET!!! Good to see Gunsmoke kind of got a licensed game. Interesting that this gameplay ended up being incorporated into Back to the Future Part III for Amiga.
I remember playing the arcade version at a local gas station a lot when I was a kid, and mom getting the NES version as a birthday present for dad because he liked westerns in either 90 or 91. (I remember either being six years old at the time or being about to turn six years old at the time.)
My favorite arcade game ever. Pieced together a cabinet with all the artwork. Even custom bezel art. It looks and plays great. I have the us set 2 pcb. Which means wolf chief in round 3 and ninja in round 6. My high score is 2,042,100. Great game. Great review patman!
Ive noticed some GunSmoke cabinets have a different 3rd level after the knife-thrower boss. Some versions had the chief on the horse boss stage and others had the stage with the muscular boss who threw the boomerangs. Still an amazing game especially for 1985👍
Thanks, Patman! This is a game I’ve been looking forward to you covering for a long time! My local pizza place had the arcade version in the late 80s, although instead of a full standup cabinet they had it in a mini tabletop console at the bar. Oddly enough, the tabletop didn’t have the 3 buttons, it had one fire button and you aimed your shots 10, 12, or 2 o’clock with the joystick. So I never knew about those fancy firing angles you could do by pressing two buttons together until I played it on MAME years later. Anyway, I never got past stage 3 in the arcade but since I loved it anyway I asked for and got the NES version for Christmas in 1988. Eventually managed to beat it too, which I was very proud of. It was probably one of the hardest games that I ever owned.
Fun seeing Gun Fight at the beginning of the video. You reminded me that I need to win the lottery and pick up a Bally Astrocade, which had Gun Fight as a built in game.
Excellent!!! I always love your classic game reviews. I look forward to them. Has anyone ever heard of Jack The Giant Killer? It's obscure, but I loved it back in the day.
Still have my NES cartridge since childhood. The Indian Village level VGM still to me my favorite soundtrack which has that Bionic Commando vibe to it. Excellent video as usual Patman.
I recall only encountering this cab in one place when new and it wasn't there long so I never got much time on it. I have put many hours into the NES and various compilations though.

SO much more fun than Commando! More immediate, faster, less frustration from Commandos hit-and-miss 10 / 2 o'clock shooting. Perhaps the Western theme wasn't so cool at the time. Great video as always Patman, thank you!
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries I'm going to suspend my statement here, there seems to be no mention of it online, though I swear I remember playing it, and being amazed how close it was to the arcade, though the floppy was constantly being accessed and it would jerk and pause at times because of it. My first good western game was actually Bank Panic. The game's a true classic. But Sunsetriders takes a close second. Gunsmoke sort of reminded me of 1942's gameplay.
Pretty good and tough game. The first time I think I saw it was a co-worker had the actual arcade machine in his house back in '97. I didn't get very far and it was quite tough. lol And wow quite a history and I didn't realize that the TV show Gunsmoke ran 20 years. I do remember watching it as a kid though. And hey speaking of Capcom. How about doing a video on Speed Rumbler? I feel that game is super underrated and is a fun arcade game!
I enjoy your work thoroughly and even check out most of the games that I didn't have the pleasure/displeasure of playing in the arcades. Something about your voice and presentation is wholesome yet aimed at an older audience. If you need any suggestions for future games to dig into, I'd love to learn more about Carnevil or better yet, the Time Crisis series. Both of those ones made my arcade visits memorable and seeing them now causes a flood of nostalgia to hit me like a Sharknado. Keep up the great work and keep em comin'!
That's nice of you to say. Those two are on my long list of games to get to so I will cover them at some point. Glad you enjoyed the content so much. Thank you
A little correction on a term early on when describing enemies. I also had this discussion with one of my players as we are in the wildwest and he uses a rifle. The term "Sniper" wasn't truly coined and or used till after WWI. It was used in Britain at the time while hunters went Snipe Hunting (I fowl or something along those lines). Now using the Term "Sharp Shooter" would of been more prevalent and it does have a better ring to it.
That's interesting info but considering the official story line refers to them as snipers then that's what I'm going to have to go with. I guess it goes along with ninjas in the middle of the wild wild West back in 1849.
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries silly ninja. Their always getting into trouble. Well it has been known that not only Chinese migrated or were transported into America, but also Japanese. There have been several Ronin (I don't know numbers), and there could have possibly been Members of various Ninja clams as well. Ahhhhh not played this for years. Thanks for the nudge and your usual quality deep dive. Respect.
Thank you so much, and thanks for watching
Got this game on my 6th bday and I’ll always remember it being the best game I got that day only because I couldn’t figure out how to play Goonies II lol
LOL
Good work Sir thank you
So nice of you, Thanks
Another awesome game I spent quarters on. Thanks Patman!!
Glad you enjoyed it
SO much more fun than Commando! More immediate, faster, less frustration from Commandos hit-and-miss 10 / 2 o'clock shooting. Perhaps the Western theme wasn't so cool at the time. Great video as always Patman, thank you!
One of the hardest games I have ever played to be honest. Thanks
The arcade version and the nes version of Gun.Smoke are both brilliant and I will play both of them. 😀👍🎮🤠
Excellent, have fun my friend
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries ok.😀👍🎮🤠
Love your humor !
Thank you kindly
Great, except you missed the Amiga version, which was almost arcade-perfect!
There was no Amiga version
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries I'm going to suspend my statement here, there seems to be no mention of it online, though I swear I remember playing it, and being amazed how close it was to the arcade, though the floppy was constantly being accessed and it would jerk and pause at times because of it. Strange!
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries Got it now! It was a clone called 'Wanted', and I think someone modified the title screen to actually call it 'Gunsmoke' on my pirated copy. There is video of it here. th-cam.com/video/5gjMyGPykA0/w-d-xo.html
Sorry for the confusion!
@@exidy-yt yes! I remember this for the Amiga! Great intro music, played like the arcade, but no music while you played, just sounds. Just saw that vid from the link. Brought back memories.
@@exidy-yt What's funny is wanted on the Amiga is a ripoff of Gunsmoke which was inspired by the TV show. What's funny about it is the title screen shows the title character of the rifleman Which was another big TV show in the 1950s. Yes, I am full of uses videogame facts :-)
You are a legend my man!
I adore gunsmoke on the NES :D
Trojan would be a nice video too. Huge nostalgia value for me.
Love how they couldn’t resist putting a ninja in the Western game.
LOL I agree
I just did a rendition of the NES title screen and storyline for Dwelling of Duels! Talk about irony haha
Capcom actually called it Red Dead Revolver. The advert was in the first copies of Devil May Cry 2.
Thanks for the info
My first good western game was actually Bank Panic. The game's a true classic. But Sunsetriders takes a close second. Gunsmoke sort of reminded me of 1942's gameplay.
That's because it was designed by the same person :-)
Boot Hill was another game i played in the Arcades years ago.
You and me both my friend
Gun Fight, Shooting Trainer, Mad Dog McCree, Sunset Riders, Sheriff/Bandido
The Big Bear in Reynoldsberg Ohio had this in there lobby in till the late 90s.
Wild Gunman was not only a Nintendo Sprites Graphics game and was a Live Action Video game? They did not have Laserdisc games back in the 70s.
Yes, if you look carefully at the video I had shown you can see the name wild gunmAn On the cabinet
This channel is awesome 😊
Thank you for another great video 🙌
Glad you enjoyed it! Thank you
Pretty good and tough game.
Thank you
The game is actually on the Capcom Arcade Stadium 2nd. You can get it for $1.99
A little correction on a term early on when describing enemies.
But describing real ninjas compared to Hollywood ninjas is another story all together.
