My brother and I discovered this is the game that started our obsession with Marvel. Specifically me with Cap and him with Iron Man. It was like a core memory being unlocked.
The four player arcade cabinet for this game is a monster. Trust me when you see it in person you do not notice the small characters because the sheer size of the cabinet overwhelms you. It's pretty fantastic
Hulk wasn’t considered an Avenger in those days. I mean, he left the team at the end of issue #3 (in the early ‘60s) and was more tied to the Defenders throughout the ‘70s and ‘80s. Hawkeye, meanwhile, was the leader of the West Coast branch of Avengers and had been with the Avengers since the mid-‘60s. Vision was so popular in the ‘70s that he alone was used as the corner box image for the Avengers comic book. And he had just gone through a major storyline (in West Coast Avengers) that saw him lose his humanity in favor of a more robotic personality. His costume change from green to white was a result of this change. So, yeah, these were arguably some of the most popular Avengers at the time. The only character that could compete with these four in terms of popularity would be Thor. And I guess they just couldn’t get Marvel’s permission to use him or thought he wouldn’t fit with the roster they had in mind (2 ground-based weapon users plus 2 flight-based energy blasters).
I can understand the logic of Spidey and Hulk since the pilot movies were probably popular back in Japan (the Hulk show is on Netflix Japan as of 2023) but the Avengers in 1991 comic book wise were in a major slump after Roger Stern left the book in '87. Cap had Mark Gruenwald in his 6th year writing him, Iron Man had John Byrne while Thor was in the dark Tom DeFalco times.
Fun fact. After filming was done for a Marvel scene, Chris Evens would send a group text to his co-stars "Assemble", whenever he was in the mood to go to a bar
Wow, I didn't know each hero had different stats including health. I usually picked Iron Man or Hawkeye. Discovered this game in a round table Pizza in the early 90s. My friend and I kept repeating the campy lines and laughing. My favorites are you "You will be the one eacaping!" and "you came here to die!" and Ultron saying "ask the police!". Great game and documentary as always!
Great job on this remade video! Definitely surprised to hear that Thor's rights were off the table even when this game was made, that wrecked his playable chances in so many later games, too. We don't even have released game like the Iron Man/XO crossover title to blame it on in poor Thor's case. Thanks for the fun look at an arcade fave!
I loved this game back in the day! I spent many a quarter as a kid and then got the Sega Genesis version for Christmas. I wasn't too into comics but I loved the Marvel Cartoons from the 90s and so this was certainly in my wheelhouse. Great video! You've made me want to go back and play this again. :)
It gets super repetitive after a while but it's still a favorite of mine. I dumped a ton of quarters in that machine back in the day. Great episode as usual.
This is still one of my favorite games. You left out the best lines though lol! When Mandarin says "see me power"! And when you ask Ultron, where's the laser and he replies "ask the police" lol
Love your content. I look forward to every video. Great stuff, as usual! 💪🏽💪🏽 happy new year to you and your family, Brother Love the, “Real Mandarin,” line 😂
My brother and I played this arcade cabinet at a hotel on a roadtrip one summer. Little did we know that would start an absolute obsession with Marvel. Cap was always my favorite and Iron Man was my bro's. This game is a banger of a beat em up.
This was at the Straw hat Pizza near me for several years and I loved it. This, Double Dragon and altered beast are the ones I remember best there. I was young enough that I thought altered beast was good lol
I always loved the hand-painted look of the backgrounds, and they hold up really well to this day-- gives the game a big Saturday-morning cartoon look. It's a shame the sprites are so small.
There actually were four Avengers animated series. The first series was made in 1966, the second series was made in 1999, the third series was made in 2010, and the fourth series was made in 2013. The two Disney series are actually the best of the four series.
This is one of my all time favorite games. Playing it as a kid in the 80’s was the best. The music and the speech just made it so memorable. I CAN’T MOVE!
There was an ad break right after you mentioned classic lines, which led me to believe one of the lines you grew up saying was, "My Lowe's rewards are here!"
Excellent video and update as always Patman. Hope you had a wonderful Christmas, New Year's and are doing well my good man, thanks again for all you do brother. 😎👍
This is one of my all time favorites. I'd ride my bike over to the leisure center in the middle of town with $5, get some quarters at the desk, and play this for an hour or two.
I remember being excited when the Genesis version came out. Arcades were drying up, and the only one left near me no longer had Captain America and the Avengers.
HAPPY NEW YEAR, PATMAN!!! 🥳🎉🎊!! Hope that you're feeling better, sir. I'm glad that you decided to do another, longer video on this game. As a huge comic book and video game nerd, this game blew my mind when it was released. It's still one of my favorite games to this day. In fact, I'm about to fire up the ol' Genesis and play it right now! 😃
A local department store had this cabinet (which would rotate with other classics like P.O.W) when I was a kid so it was always a point of discussion among my friends and I. I didn't know jack about the Avengers until like a decade later but we still had a ton of fun, especially loving the absurd voice lines.
That grim helicopter boss reminds me of the Penguin from the Batman Returns SuperNes game. Well-fought battles here, Patman! Thanks for covering all of the attacks/dashes and special moves and abilities in this classic brawler beat 'em up. Some fun ports to home systems too. I need to try to progress further in this game and complete it soon. Thanks Patman!
I LOVED this game when it first came out - I played it every chance I had, and I got the Sega Genesis cartridge for Christmas in 1992. There was also a Spider-Man arcade game at the Round Table Pizza at my local mall. Both games were so much fun. I won't be able to add this without sounding like a jerk, but the sky cycles Cap and Hawkeye used in the game debuted in the first issue of the Hawkeye miniseries from 1983, and were designed & built by a one-off character named Jorge Latham who worked with Hawkeye at Cross Tech. I'm cringing for both of us right now, don't worry.
I always played Vision when i played this game, due to his defensive ability. Cap raises his shield, Hawkeye blocks with his bow, Iron Man creates a small force-field but these only protect from one direction. Vision turns intangible, so he's protected from all directions.
I definitely don't mind these revised videos and as you mentioned, there's usually newly discovered information that's always good to share. For some reason I never saw this game in the arcades and even though I saw it at rental shops for Genesis and Super, I dunno if it was the box art or what but it never grabbed my attention as a kid. Over the years a lot of people recommended the Arcade version. But, as hard as it is to imagine now with how many games work with MAME, although this was dumped for a long time it just didn't work in MAME for a while until 2009 or 2010. After going from indifference as a kid to anticipation as an adult, when I finally played it in 2011 I thought it was just okay. It felt more flash and flare than solid beat em up gameplay imo but still worth checking out if you're an Avengers fan and worth the experience as a retro Arcade enthusiast for sure just from the abundance of speech and animation alone. 😎
Some people do not like me going back even though I'm not just redoing the audio I'm rebuilding the video from scratch. And adding a lot of extra content as well.I actually have this running on Mame a lot further back I would say probably 2000 to 2003
I have fond memories of renting this many times on the Genesis and playing with family and friends co-op. Some of the dialogue in the game is absolutely hilarious and I find myself randomly repeating it from time to time 😂
One of my favourite games was the Spiderman game that i completed at an arcade where you paid $5 and played everything quarter free. But i really loved captain America and the avengers on genesis. I never got to play that one on arcade. I worked at a video store and recommended Captain America and the avengers frequently. I miss those days.
We had the 2P version of this at our local Aladdin's Castle in the mall. I would, more often than not, drop a half-weeks allowance into it - as long as I got to play as Vision. What a great game.
It's cheesy fun as brings the whole comic book to life in an enjoyable arcade game. I put plenty of quarters into this game back in the day. I've played thru a couple times in more recent history on MAME as I been setting up arcade 1ups to play more games after I mod them. I live in the chicagoland area for anyone looking for assistance with that kinda of thing as I do for fun on the side while I hold down my regular job.
I remember, must have been in '93, me and a buddy drove almost 50 miles to the nearest Toys 'R' Us. He got a Sega CD system and I got this and Shining in the Darkness. Still play it every few years. SEEEEE MY POOOOWAH!
Loved this one in the arcade. I was so disappointed when I rented the SNES game from Blockbuster. I still think the sprites in the SEGA Spider-man game were too big. It was cool how they scaled out for the building climbing parts.
Can say good video here and also could look into the Konami arcade game Aliens or any games dealing with Alien or Alien 3 along with other titles like Lucky and Wild, SEGA's Gunblade NY and LA Machine Guns or look up this arcade title that also had a port on a system that seemed way ahead of it's time the Turbografx-16 along with it's handheld the TurboExpress Ninja Spirits along with a review on those systems if you haven't already it's Japanese name is the PC Engine and much slim than this anyway really look into those Pat.
Totally awesome. Great memories. I think you forgot to call attention to the defense moves the characters have. Cap uses his shield. I think vision phases to allow attacks to pass thru him. Iron man generates an energy shield. Don’t remember Hawkeyes move. Wasp had some tactical use when she appeared.
Played a lot of the NES version but certain levels it forces you to be Hawkeye & his arrows in that game is like those Atari single line shooters! Looks so tiny compared to Captain Americas big Shield being thrown at the baddies! That game would of been a lot better if it was just Captain America! Our arcade had the Avengers in The Galactic Storm & i put in a lot of quarters into that game back in 1996! This video was awesome thanks for sharing!
This game and X Men were rreasons why I liked Wal Mart. I had no idea what the superstores sold becaue I never made it out of the area where the games were located lol
I love that you take your old videos and think "I can do that better" and redo the episode.
Appreciate the effort you put in!
I try to do better and better with every video I make!
This game is the reason I became obsessed with Captain America when I was nine
Me too!
Very cool
My brother and I discovered this is the game that started our obsession with Marvel. Specifically me with Cap and him with Iron Man. It was like a core memory being unlocked.
Red Skull's laugh in this game cracks me up. I'd play it just to hear his ridiculous chuckle.
It's a classic, that's why a put it at the start of the videoSmiling
The four player arcade cabinet for this game is a monster. Trust me when you see it in person you do not notice the small characters because the sheer size of the cabinet overwhelms you. It's pretty fantastic
I have played it multiple times a person and yes it is massive. In comparison to games like final fight they are small

Had it on Sega.... AND LOVE IT. 🥰
Had it on sega and snes. The genesis version was over all a better game.
Yeah but the ports sucked!
"YOU will be the one ESCAPING!"
I can't lose!
"America Still Needs Your Help."
I could totally see Drax saying something like that!
@DrownedInExile I like the way you think. 😆
Fun fact. After filming was done for a Marvel scene, Chris Evens would send a group text to his co-stars "Assemble", whenever he was in the mood to go to a bar

So far so good, thanks
Wow, I didn't know each hero had different stats including health. I usually picked Iron Man or Hawkeye. Discovered this game in a round table Pizza in the early 90s. My friend and I kept repeating the campy lines and laughing. My favorites are you "You will be the one eacaping!" and "you came here to die!" and Ultron saying "ask the police!". Great game and documentary as always!
You sometimes must ask yourself "why should it go so well?"
LOL the dialogue is fantastic. Thanks
LOL
I WAS OBSESSED WITH THIS AND THE SPIDER-MAN ARCADE GAME
Especially as I was a comic book nerd
Fun fact: the characters in Galactic Storm are voiced Jon St. John (Duke Nukem) and Lani Minella (VG voiceover direction pioneer).
You rock Pat. Loved this game back in the day. Praying for your health sir 🙏
Thank you, I appreciate your kind words.
Absolutely, I'm glad you enjoyed it. Thanks
The arcade version and the Sega genesis version of Captain America and the avengers are both excellent. 😀👍🎮
I agree 100%
I loved the port on the Genesis. Especially the music on sega. I actually liked it better than the arcade.
"You can't escape!" "YOU WILL BE THE ONE ESCAPING!"
LOL I can't lose
My friends and I *loved* this game. Another banger, Patman! Great revisit!
I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Took me a while to learn that you could make the wasp shoot forward
I loved this game back in the day! I spent many a quarter as a kid and then got the Sega Genesis version for Christmas. I wasn't too into comics but I loved the Marvel Cartoons from the 90s and so this was certainly in my wheelhouse. Great video! You've made me want to go back and play this again. :)
They meet some great cartoons back in the 90s that's for sure. Thanks
Even if it was an older video I still enjoyed it and had watched it a few times.
There were a lot of great lines I didn't add
This channel is my comfy corner of nostalgia.
Love your content. I look forward to every video. Great stuff, as usual! 💪🏽💪🏽 happy new year to you and your family, Brother

My brother and I played this arcade cabinet at a hotel on a roadtrip one summer. Little did we know that would start an absolute obsession with Marvel. Cap was always my favorite and Iron Man was my bro's. This game is a banger of a beat em up.
LOL that's great
This was at the Straw hat Pizza near me for several years and I loved it. This, Double Dragon and altered beast are the ones I remember best there. I was young enough that I thought altered beast was good lol
Altered beast is a guilty pleasure of mind to this day. Rise from your grave
@Jeremycook_, so, THAT is what happened after Monkey D. Luffy, and his friends, found their treasure on the Grand Line, huh?
"America STILL needs your help!"
LOL I should have mentiooned that one

The ones I use to this day is
YOU CANT ESCAPE!
-- YOU WILL BE THE ONE ESCAPING!
So nonsensical, I loved it immediately
There are so many unintentionally funny lines. "I can't lose" is probably my favorite
"choppy choppy" 😂 I wasn't expecting a Kai En Tai reference well done sir
LOL I'm glad somebody got that reference
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries no pee pee.

Thanks, will do!
I think about this game alot me and my cousins were obsessed and we'd play it all the time. I can hear every sound effect in my mind.
LOL you and me both
My POPS got this game for the GENESIS, I freaking loved it and still own it,to this day I still say "SEE MY PAWAH!"
LOL so many classic lines
This was a fun video to watch. I remember as a kid being so pumped when I first discovered the 4 player arcade Avengers game.
Great, I'm glad you enjoyed it
I absolutely loved this and Spider-Man, but 4 player X-Men was my jam!!!

Thanks for watching
Love having you back my friend , and happy New Year to you and yours
Thanks for watching! Happy New Year to you, too!
Very happy to see you back at it full steam
Keep up the good work
Thanks for the support!
Another banger Patman. Well done👍
Thanks buddy
I love the "Sega Genesis" version, it has some of my all-time favorite music! Great video!
I agree, it's one of the best versions
Love your videos. You have a genuine passion for gaming.
Great video as usual Patman! Wishing you a happy and healthy new year and looking forward to watching you in 2025
Thanks my friend, the same to you
I was given the Genesis version as a kid, and I absolutely loved it! I would usually play as Captain America, and my brother picked Iron Man.
It turned out really good on the Genesis

Great to see the content coming! This game was freaking awesome with friends!
Yes it was!
One of my favorite arcade games of the early 90s!
One of mine as well
Omg man, this takes me back to being a kid and spending every quarter I had on this game. Was at Roses in Somerset, Ky. Best moments of my life 😢
Excellent, I've been through Kentucky a few times
As a long time Marvel fan. I played this game so much from seeing all the characters from Whirlwind to the Growing Man. I could never get enough of
Definitely up for Version 2.0, the Special Edition or the Directors Cut of any of your old stuff.
Keep it coming!
Thanks so much. Some people don't like it but considering how crappy my old equipment was and how lackluster my research skills were….
Crazy to think that once upon a time, Iron Man was not the most popular Avenger.
Excellent video and update as always Patman. Hope you had a wonderful Christmas, New Year's and are doing well my good man, thanks again for all you do brother. 😎👍
You're the best! Happy New Year

@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries That’s great to hear, brutha, and thank you! Take care of yourself, sir. "See my powah!!"
A local department store had this cabinet (which would rotate with other classics like P.O.W) when I was a kid so it was always a point of discussion among my friends and I. Kudos! For the update! Love the content.
I thought you had covered this game before, love the updated take!

That grim helicopter boss reminds me of the Penguin from the Batman Returns SuperNes game. Well-fought battles here, Patman! I can see the similarities too. Thanks
I remember playing this as a kid, Hills department store had a snack bar and arcade games right when you walked in the door. I miss the good old days
Hulk smash Atari.😂
Just like the snack bars at Kmart :-)
I always played Vision when i played this game, due to his defensive ability. Cap raises his shield, Hawkeye blocks with his bow, Iron Man creates a small force-field but these only protect from one direction. Vision turns intangible, so he's protected from all directions.
I should have mentioned the blocking, thanks
Vision also looks incredibly badass, picking up barrels and enemies alike one-handed!
