Good memories of this game. P.O.W. was in my local fish and chips shop in the late 80's, it was a SNK machine that also had Prehistoric Isle on it. Myself and some friends would play them games often.
We put a lot of ten pence coins in that arcade machine.
The chip shop would often have a new machine at least every 6 months.. Players choice, Neo Geo and many others.
    Good nostalgic memories.

"P.O.W.", "Renegade", and "Double Dragon II" were on my perpetual rental list at the ol' mom and pop in the town where I spent the first 10 years of my life.
I had the pleasure of playing the P.O.W. arcade game exactly ONCE... and I was left with this feeling, like "man, why can't my NES make the game look and sound this good?"... Double Dragon II left me with a similar feeling.
The experience honestly made me avoid the arcade for quite some time. I didn't want to ruin my opinion of the games I either owned or rented by playing the FAR superior arcade versions.
I got over that when "Mortal Kombat" first hit the arcade!
    Great stuff as usual, Pat!

It’s a shame that SNK never gave P.O.W. a sequel on the Neo Geo. Especially considering how many other early franchises got them.

  • @Eff_One

I always wanted SNK to someday announce that the player characters in P.O.W. - Prisoners Of War were, in fact the Ikari Warriors. It would make sense if they were the same characters.
I used to love this game when I was a kid. I'll always remember the local video rental shop just down the street from where I lived had a machine that took a lot of my money. The bottom left of the CRT screen was discoloured on this particular machine. Interesting that I remember so clearly such a mundane detail, but there you go.

I use to play the arcade version of P.O.W - Prisoners of War at this old Pizzeria in the middle of the woods back in the very early 90's. Seriously, while I was in my family car with my parents driving, we would always enter an area where it was nothing but WOODS (trees, trees and more trees. Sometimes deer and a beer if we got lucky). This Pizzeria would be in the middle of the woods and the building wasn't in the best shape, the workers looked like they were former convicts, but the pizza was MAGNIFICENT (New York style pizza in the middle of the woods. It's like a bunch of pizza making criminals left New York City and went to hide out in the woods in the middle of nowhere and they made the BEST pizza ever). Anyway, they always had a perfectly working P.O.W - Prisoners of War arcade machine in that Pizzeria and I would get tons of quarters from my family (and sometimes FREE quarters from the Pizza makers at the place, they were very nice people) and I would play that game over and over and over. It's one of my favorite childhood memories from the 1990's. I have no clue what happened to that pizzeria and P.O.W arcade machine after the 90's ended, but I was very happy when SNK released a modern 40th anniversary collection that has the arcade version of P.O.W -Prisoners of War on it.

This was one of those titles I was in love with as a kid. The local department store had a rotating selection of arcade machines and this was one of them (Captain America and the Avengers being the other that immediately comes to mind). As a result would rent the NES title a fair bit and got pretty decent at it as well. Also not mentioned but a neat little bonus, the NES version is also included on the SNK 40th Anniversary Collection, they did that for most every title so it really is the complete package.

P.O.W. is far from my favorite SNK or even SNK 40th Anniversary Collection game (I like Vanguard way more than anyone that only started playing it a couple of years ago probably should). But P.O.W. also isn't a bad game. Especially considering it released before Final Fight changed the beat 'em up genre.
It is pretty tough. I never quite got the hang of dealing with the knife guys. And I would say the stages, like many of SNK's early stuff, were just too long. I think SNK's games with long but few stages would have been much better off being broken into smaller ones.
This review has me wanting to fire up the ol' Steam and play a few games of P.O.W. and maybe a few other early SNK arcade titles. Excellent work.

Oh yes, this is another great classic! Another of the cool ones from SNK no less. In my opinion the gameplay is similar to Street Smart! You need to take care in attacking your opponent and moving away just before being counterattacked.
Here's a little hint: Listen carefully to the sound effects from P.O.W and Street Smart as your opponent goes flying after being hit by a power move; they are very similar and both made by SNK. 😉

Patman, you wouldn't shatner in your pants in a crowded elevator would you? 💩 All of SNK war games are legends that I've played in elementary school💪 great video as customary.

Absolutely love POW. unlike the awful street smart, which is a guilty pleasure- its actually really good!
Its an interesting time with these snk games, as they are not neogeo and dedicated boards. Nerdy as hell, but that sorta stuff fascinates me.

Holy crap Patman!!!! You just helped a decades long mystery of mine. I knew i played a game with these scenes!!!! I swear i thought of this game years ago, but i wasn't sure if i had actually played it on the NES when i was a kid. I thought it was just a false memory or a fever dream. .... it was cool to see you mention Guerilla war. That and Iron tank were 2 of my favorites back then.

What makes the game interesting is that it is "Rocket Tag Gameplay" in a beat-'em-up -- pretty much everyone including YOU die in only a few hits. And with weapons, most are one-hit-kills.

The game runs on the same hardware as "Street Smart" and "Ikari III - The Rescue". Sound effects are even the same. It would make sense if the guys in this game are actually the Ikari Warriors; Ralf Jones and Clark Still. I've always had this theory that it's actually them, even though SNK has never confirmed it. Anyone else with me?

"Snake" not because of Metal Gear, rather Metal Gear's Snake is inspired by Snake Plissken from Kurt Russel's "Escape from New York."
This is likely the case here as it was a hugely popular "American" movie character around that time. A good amount of japanese manga, anime and game characters that were "tough Americans" were named Snake in the late 1980s due to that film.

I just noticed something, though: the punching and defeated enemy sound effects, are the same as in a fighting game called "Street Smart".

It's so funny to me how many of the enemies that come at you are unarmed. Imagine this prisoner escapes and murders literally hundreds of your peer soldiers many with his bare hands and then they tell you to just go out and stop him and don't even give you a sharp stick. 😅 Like fighting a Gorilla on meth with a machine gun.
