In the Street Fighter games, Zangief is a good guy. He was a villain in "Street Fighter: The Movie" and describes himself as a bad guy in the movie "Wreck-It Ralph". In any canon Street Fighter game he's on the hero side and quite friendly...when he's not hurting you...and sometimes when he is.
Yeah, he's also likely to be inspired by a guy called Victor Zangiev (pronounced Zang-Ee-Ev. Not certain if it's a spelling mistake due to someone not being sure how the name was spelled after hearing it spoken, or if it's for avoiding lawsuits for unauthorised use of his image. Kind of like how Mike from SF1 isn't the boxer from the sequel, even though M.Bison could easily be Mike Bison, causing them to swap the names around internationally and call him Balrog) Zangiev was a wrestler from the Soviet Union who was signed to New Japan Pro Wrestling in 1989. The thing to remember about depictions of the Soviet Union is that not every country was as hostile to them as the US. Japan would have had a complicated relationship with them, being on opposing sides in the war, but given the damage done by the refusal of the military to admit defeat (which would have prevented the nukes from being dropped on them and would have saved a lot of people from dying unnecessarily) and the imposed US occupation of the country making significant changes to their cultural norms and work lives there was a very significant amount of communist sympathy within the Japanese population. (the whole thing about Japanese companies utterly dominating the lives of the employees to the point where they never see their families, feel shamed for taking a holiday and collapse dead in their mid 30s after doing 6 months of 15 hour days. All brought over by an American Banker named Joseph Dodge, who was an advisor to General MacArthur. MacArthur had previously overseen work to protect the right for workers to form unions, granted the unions the permission to go on strike during a national dispute, had put into law that working conditions required that the health and wellbeing of the employees to be protected, so that they could live a decent standard of life. Looking into MacArthur himself I can see that he was born into a military family where his father was an officer, with him also being groomed for a leadership role. I don't think it would be sensible to try and infer his political opinions from his upbringing and actions during occupation. When it comes down to it he was there to help Japan recover stability enough for US corporate interests to turn it into a cheap source of labour and goods. As a military man he likely was just focusing on what would actually make it possible for the country to rebuild and would reduce the resistance to occupation. One could argue that the laws preceding the arrival of Dodge were a clever tactic: if the occupation didn't improve workers' rights then they would never gain legitimacy or favour with the largest part of the population. With unions being legally recognized, and the rolling out of new workplace protections, their energies are going to be put towards holding their employers to account)
That one fight between him and Blanka where Blanka grabs ahold of Zangief from behind at the end, chomps down on his neck and starts frying him with electricity was a badass fight... i wanted to see Zangief and him fight more. I never get tired of tornado driving people into the ground in the game lol.
I still remember buying the NES version at Toys R Us. The moment I saw the T-Rex on the back of the box, my mind was made up. It's one of the NES classics that I most regret never being able to beat.
The ending isn’t much to write home about. Just a black screen that says “Congratulations the end”. The Famicom version had cutscenes and a story that were removed due to being based on religion.
Both of these were cheap as heck! Nintendo hard black box type stuff. The Legend of Cage was slightly more forgiving w the 'multiple ending' playthrough

Karnov could certainly benefit from a modern remake or sequel, if only to make use of the shoulder buttons on a modern controller for cycling through items. 😉 Also, when Karnov was made to look more Asian in later appearances, it gave me the impression that he was meant to be a Mongolian-Russian.
6:55 That golden statue man looks suspiciously like the Starman enemy from Mother 2 (Earthbound). I wonder if this enemy in Karnov was the inspiration for Starman?
I only knew Karnov from the NES title. Clicked on your vid because I couldn't believe someone could talk about Karnov for that long. Enjoyed your delivery though. Great vid.
I always wish they would have done other sequels to the first one. I remember playing it back in the '80s and not knowing what the hell is going on but I liked it. Never saw it in the arcade very often but when I did I tried to play it. Cool video, man.
I remember playing this game as a kid on the nes over my neighbor's house nd we couldn't beat it pass the 3rd stage lol thanks u for taking the time to make this 🎉
The NES version of Karnov was one of those games I always wanted to play back in the day but never did since I didn't know anyone that owned it and the Hogan's Video near me never had it available to rent. For a relatively early NES release it's not a bad game. I never did play the arcade version or any of the home computer ports so thank you for this video!
Beat this game on the good ol NES! It was a tough playthrough, but a lot of fun! I remember keeping the game paused for sleep and school because it took me a couple days to get through it. LOL... Those were the days back in the 80s. 😊
Only one of the arcades in my town (we had at most 3 at one time) had this game and only for a brief period so I never got very far in it. Had to spread my quarters around on other games as well.
Bought the ZX Spectrum version of this, back in the day, and really liked it. It's a shame that the original arcade version hasn't shown up in the Arcade Archives series, or Data East's own equivalent series. There was even a "Data East Arcade Classics" compilation back on the Wii, with 15 games, but Karnov was a no-show in that as well. Nice to see the fella getting some love here, at least :)
I always like to think of Karnov as Mongolian or Kazakh. He’s got a russian name but looks asian most of the time. That’s the best conclusion I could come to.
I actually remember renting this game back in the day, I think I was 8 at the time and I remember looking at it but I wasn't sure but some other games were rented out that I wanted so I was stuck with Karnov. I didn't like it at first but the game grew on me that I actually went to Toys r Us and bought the game a few weeks later.

I always wish they would have done other sequels to the first one. I remember playing it back in the '80s and not knowing what the hell is going on but I liked it. Never saw it in the arcade very often but when I did I tried to play it. Cool video, man.
Thanks a lot
I enjoyed the old NES version back in the day, but I really liked the graphics of the arcade version. Reminded me a bit of Rastan's style.
Yes, they are indeed similar
Enjoyed playing both arcade & NES. It’s always funny beating him on Bad Dudes & Fighting History.
Absolutely
I’ve never heard of this game but it don’t matter. It’s Patman so it’s gonna be a good video. Bet!
I remember playing this game as a kid on the nes over my neighbor's house nd we couldn't beat it pass the 3rd stage lol thanks u for taking the time to make this 🎉
Absolutely, thanks for watching
The NES version of Karnov was one of those games I always wanted to play back in the day but never did since I didn't know anyone that owned it and the Hogan's Video near me never had it available to rent. For a relatively early NES release it's not a bad game. I never did play the arcade version or any of the home computer ports so thank you for this video!
I remember the ending to Karnov for the NES. All you get is the words "The End". They might as well put the words "F**k You" in their place.
You also fought Michael Jackson knockoffs
And the oscar underground.
Yes, I mentioned that in the video
Beat this game on the good ol NES!
It was a tough playthrough, but a lot of fun!
I remember keeping the game paused for sleep and school because it took me a couple days to get through it. LOL...
Those were the days back in the 80s. 😊
Only one of the arcades in my town (we had at most 3 at one time) had this game and only for a brief period so I never got very far in it. Had to spread my quarters around on other games as well.
LOL you and me both
17:04 That, sir, is the Minibosses's version of the Wizards and Warriors theme!
Nice, I missed that
I was going to mention that myself. Always nice to hear them in a video.
It's amazing how popular the character has become considering a proper follow-up was never produced
Another of Data East's quirky unique games!
Indeed :-)
my god :-) this was my first game i own ,sadly it was a tiger video game 😀
omg!! KARNOV!!!
whats next? Rastan Saga? my favorite arcade of all time!
Already covered it
Thanks from Panama city Beach, FL
Excellent, greetings from Illinois
Them dang high school crabs!!
LOL, glad someone got the joke :-)
I believe that he is one of the boss fights in Bad Dudes. Which is made by the same company
Yes I mentioned that in the video.
I always like to think of Karnov as Mongolian or Kazakh. He’s got a russian name but looks asian most of the time. That’s the best conclusion I could come to.
Could be
I actually remember renting this game back in the day, I think I was 8 at the time and I remember looking at it but I wasn't sure but some other games were rented out that I wanted so I was stuck with Karnov. I didn't like it at first but the game grew on me that I actually went to Toys r Us and bought the game a few weeks later.
