    I 100% believe the concept of analog in with great preamps, compressors, eq's, etc. I really feel if you get a great take on the way in (the most important part in my opinion) you can 100% mix and master in the box with phenomenal results. That studio setup you have now is just awesome!

    I am using a similar setup with a lot of 500 series but something (I think) is not right, why using two insert points for the hardware (you'll convert twice and twice delay compensation) ?
    Why not using your patchbay and wire the units through it ? so that way it's just one insert point, DA & AD once, delay compensation once...
    The only positive point is the recall, you don't have to write the patchbay wiring.

    I love outboard and hybrid set ups but now digital is getting so good it's almost indistinguishable between analog and digital. A lot of guys are going all ITB. Jeez even basic usb interfaces are sounding legit these days. Preamps IMO are very subtle. Sick set up though. I'm getting rid of more outboard gear then ever latley. Nice to just not have to mess with patches or inserts etc. even some of those tape emulations are getting scary close. Interesting time to be in this game. 5-10 grand can get you a legit sounding rig now. With drums the room is what I'd spend the most on. Rooms make the most difference.

    So when you do a real time “bounce” of the mix, does that capture the HW inserts as well or do you have to print the mix by re-routing the whole thing to another stereo track before bouncing? I have a similar work flow, but routing everything out to a summing mixer… so I have to print it all coming back in on another stereo track, which can get a little tricky with monitoring/PT Master Fader, etc….

    I am trying to figure out how your hardware is wired.. is all of your HW units dedicated to ProTools inserts? Are you using a patchbay to flip those inserts or are the hardware units hardwired to dedicated interface inputs?

    • @polymathism7598

      Most times it’s in a patchbay so it can be routed during tracking and for inserts during mixing. If they are hardwired to an interface you lose flexibility during tracking.

    Great video! Any concerns about phase issues with hybrid mixing? Have you ever thought about a summing mixer? • @itsstudiotime

      Not since switching to this interface. If the interface you're using doesn't have automatic delay compensation you can not only introduce phase but weird latency issues. I used to have the Burl B32. I may get something down the line - but for now things are good!

    • @Fastvoice

      As it is mostly analog I bet that you get less latency than with some digital plugins. You only have to deal with D/A and A/D conversion which is usually not an issue.

  • @alaronthemix

    Andrew: You think this sounds as good as your 68 Series Trident mix? Not even close, IMHO.

    • @itsstudiotime

      Well, it’s not a mix- it’s a few things soloed from an unfinished production after a day of tracking. The mix you’re referring to was tracked exclusively with preamps not on the console - mixed 100% in the box - and then simply routed through the desk. So yes a finished production and finished mixed - routed through summing would certainly sound better than some raw tracks in solo mode.

    • @zdogg8

      @@itsstudiotime You said you actually PREFERRED the 68 preamps to some of your in-house favorites, - you did a "for the camera" r sonic head-to-head, when you made that declaration. You may be correct on apples vs. non apples, but the sonic signature is not as robust here, that's what I'm hearing, not that the sound is bad.

    • @Fastvoice
