Did you use the 4k setting? It seems that is where you get that SSL magic out of the unit. What a killer interface for the price. I’m gonna get one. The SSL plugins are really good too to add to the arsenal.

Yes, it can be done with half the money invested in the interface, leaving money for some microphones (which definitely drives the total cost up). 😉 I totally agree with this video on how the importance of what’s really involved on making a great sounding track. In this day and age, the interface and DAW/outboard gear is the less limiting factor in the whole process. While good external gear is fun, looks good and might impart a specific tone, anyone who believes that it is really needed to have a professional sounding recording is only showing that other skills are lacking (not gear). DAW’s and plug-ins today go way beyond what many of the greatest recordings of all time really were able to do, and I have no doubt that the same musicians and sound engineers that are able to pull out great sounding records in a pro studio, would still be able to get pro sounding results with many prosumer gear. The most expensive guitar or piano in the world won’t sound good in the hands of anyone who can’t play it, and the same applies to microphones and interfaces. That’s why “working” hard to increase the level of skills in every part of the process is still the best investment, leaving the GAS (as fun as it is) in a secondary role. I mean this in the context of this kind of musical genres, since recording a full piece orchestra will certainly have very different requirements on so many levels.

I wonder how close you could get to this result just using the tascam model 2400.... I much prefer knobs and faders to a mouse or control surface. It feels more immediate and familiar to me. And yes, I'm getting old..... I do have to say it sounds great though. No argument from me on the results, for sure!

Noob here. Why use the Franklin switcher instead of a patch bay?

I didn't know the track but recognise the style. I listened to your remake and loved the sound of each instrument and what a singer! I then listened to the original track on TH-cam. The first thing that hit me witht the original was a predominance of mid frequencies to the mix, an accentuation of 300-850hz across the mix. Also noticeable was a lot of compression especially on electric guitars and what seemed more reverb, making a kind of sheen across the parts. This gave it a kind of glue and a vibe that was missing from your mix. I wonder if the vibe would have been different if you had learned and rehearsed the song as a band and recorded it as such? There is of course the fact that you only know this song from hearing it. When you write a song, as the song is 'born' there is often an excitement in hearing the song for the first time, especially when you record it, hence many studio recordings never better the initial demo. It would be interesting to know the history of the original recording because there is definitely a vibe that is hard to put your finger on, that makes it so engaging to the listener. Great idea BTW and I thoroughly enjoyed the whole film.

I dont believe SSL would dumb down the quality of this piece of equipment because of the PRICE POINT, after all they do have a reputation to uphold....kudos to them for making gear with affordability in mind for people like myself who run home studios and can't part with a kidney to buy GEAR

The End result sounded great. Just curious what you did in the production parts of the song. Drums...Production Used...same with the other instruments. Just going over the Mix and how you produced this song, that would be helpful to many of us recording Dudes...lol. Cheers.
